Cannes Post Mortem & Crtitics Poll #3/The Master to Venice?/The Hunt/Les Miz Teaser

Good Morning!

Summer blogging begins in earnest today as MTFB/FAC begins its 6 times a week posting schedule.  The serious countdown to the 39th Telluride Film Festival begins today.  Three months from today (Aug. 31) the festival opens...as always, I can't wait.

CANNES POST MORTEM AND THIRD CRITIC'S POLL

Cannes #65 is in the books with Michel Haneke's "Amour" taking the top prize.  I started the fest thinking that six films were the most likely for repeating in Colorado: "Amour", "Beyond the Hills", "Rust and Bone", "Reality", "On the Road"' and "Cosmopolis".  At the end of the festival, I feel as strongly, maybe even more strongly, that we'll see "Amour", "Hills" and "Rust".  "Reality" seems like a 50/50 proposition and I think that "Road" and "Cosmopolis" may have lost some steam for Telluride.

I think"Holy Motors", "The Hunt", You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet", "Like Someone in Love", and "Mud" may have put themselves into some Telluride conversations.  In addition, I have some suspicions that non-competition films "No" and "The Sapphires" will make it into the Telluride program.

Also, CriticWire at IndieWire posted a third critic's poll of Cannes films here:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/criticwire/criticwire-at-cannes-the-top-films-and-performances-poll?page=1#

"Amour" and "Holy Motors" were at the top mirroring the critical response measured by Screen Daily and Ioncinema.

THE MASTER AND VENICE

In the midst of announcements from the new director of the Venice Film Festival, Alberto Barbera, this week came his claim that Venice would probably program Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master".  PT Anderson fan site Cigarettes and RedVines reported the story here:

http://cigsandredvines.blogspot.com/2012/05/master-could-be-headed-to-venice-film.html

As we have noted in this space previously, double booking Venice and Telluride does happen...but it's fairly rare.  "Shame" and "A Dangerous Method" did it last year...so it doesn't kill chances that we'll see the film in Colorado but it probably reduces the odds some.

Of course, Barbera could just be expressing wishful thinking.  He also mentioned new films from Malick and DePalma as "likely candidates".  Which isn't exactly a flat out statement that he's got those films programmed.

And, further, I almost always approach this guessing game with the assumption that previous Telluride guests had a really pleasant experience and prefer to return.  I believe Anderson enjoyed his time in Telluride in 2007 when he was in town for the Daniel Day-Lewis tribute and the presentation of 20 minutes of "There Will Be Blood".

I often kick myself  that I didn't take the opportunity to introduce myself when I sat the row behind him later that weekend as we caught Noah Baumbach's "Margot at the Wedding".  But he seemed to be enjoying the experience.

So, I'm not giving up hope just yet.  I've always thought "The Master" was a long shot for Telluride...but I'd love to be wrong.

THE HUNT

Magnolia Pictures has grabbed the U.S. rights to Thomas Vintenberg's "The Hunt" which won its lead Mads Mikkelsen the Best Actor prize at Cannes last week.  The Hollywood Reporter has the story here:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/magnolia-picks-up-cannes-winner-the-hunt-330909

"The Hunt's" success at Cannes has raised its Telluride profile.

LES MISERABLES TEASER

Les Miz's chance of bowing at Telluride: about 3% ( director Tom Hooper's "King's Speech" was in T-ride in 2010 and production company Working Title had "Catch a Fire" showed as a sneak in 2006).  Nevertheless, it has its first teaser out and I couldn't resist re-linking it from The Hollywood Reporter:

CRITICAL RECEPTION

Both Ioncinema and Screen Daily spent a good deal of time compiling the collective critical response to the 22 films that were in competition in Cannes. The top 6 from the Ioncinema group:

1) Amour

2) Holy Motors

3) Beyond the Hills

4) Rust and Bone

4) You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet

4) Mud

Just on the Ioncinema cusp were: In the Fog and Moonrise Kingdom

Here's the link to the complete chart:

http://www.ioncinema.com/news/cannes-critics-panel-hanekes-amour-should-beat-caraxs-holy-motors

From Screen Daily the top six were:

1) Amour and Beyond the Hills

3) Rust and Bone, The Hunt, Killing Them Softly, In the Fog

Close on the Screen Daily chart: The Angel’s Share and Mud.

Here's the link to The Screen Daily Chart:

http://www.screendaily.com/journals/2012/05/26/k/j/v/Cannes-jury-grid_Day-12.pdf

When the charts are combined…here’s the critical top ten from Cannes

1) Amour

2) Beyond the Hills

3) Mud

4) In the Fog

5) You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet

6) Holy Motors and The Hunt

8) Moonrise Kingdom

9) The Angels Share

10) Killing Them Softly

Next: Rust and Bone

So what does all this mean for Telluride in 3 months?

Bank on seeing “Amour” and “Beyond the Hills”.

If “Rust and Bone” had won any prize at all, I’d also include it on the “bank on it” list…though I still think it’s highly likely.

“Reality”, which had lost some Telluride steam because of fairly weak critical reception over the last week…actually ended the festival back in the possible/probable category because of its Grand Prix win.

Two other T-ride probables that I think suffered some this past fortnight: “Cosmopolis” and “On the Road”.

Getting a boost for Telluride consideration among the competition films: “Mud”, “Holy Motors”, “The Hunt” “The Angel’s Share” and “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet”.

The two out of competition films that caught my eye with some (a lot of) Telluride potential were “The Sapphires” and “No”.

I’m still unconvinced that Carlos Reygadas “Post Tenebras Lux” will end up in Telluride despite its win for Direction.

Now, I spend the next 3 months ferreting out which of these actually is going to end up in Telluride on Labor Day and the other films that will join them.

BACK TO A DAILY

Michael’s Telluride Film Blog returns as a daily blog on Thursday (except for Sundays) and will run Daily until the 39th Telluride Film Festival comes to an end. Join me in my obsession!

Good Morning!

CANNES REVIEWS

The 65th Cannes Film Festival rolls on in its own way as a try out for Telluride #39 films.  I have tagged 6 competition films that seem like they'll certainly get a look from the TFF crew: "Rust and Bone", "Reality", "Cosmopolis", "Amour", "Beyond the Hills" and "On the Road".  That isn't to say that other Cannes offerings in the competition category and Un Certain Regard category aren't also possibilities.  Further, these six films aren't locked into Telluride either.  Consequently, I am happy to link blog followers to reviews as they are coming out of Cannes with regards to these 6 films as well as others that seem to have some Telluride potential.  Therefore...

AND THE COMBINED RESPONSE

Again this year Ioncinema is posting a critical consensus of the festival.  Posted here is after 5 days:
http://www.ioncinema.com/news/cannes-critics-panel-day-5-michael-hanekes-love

Halfway through the Festival and "Amur" leads the pack (substantailly).

1) Amour
2) Beyond the Hills
3) Rust and Bone
4) Moonrise Kingdom
5) The Hunt

Averages and positions can change as not all of the critics have weighed in as yet and, of course, there is still half the festival to go.  That being said, the top three listed above all look good for Telluride.

HYDE PARK ON HUDSON

Not at Cannes, but definitely on my Telluride radar is Roger Michell's "Hyde Park on Hudson" featuring Bill Murray as FDR and Laura Linney as his neighbor (and more).  This week saw the release of the first trailer for the film.  Here are multiple links from a variety of sources:

Cannes Out of the Gate/The Master Teases

Good Morning!

CANNES OUT OF THE GATE

The 65th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is off and running as it opened yesterday with the premiere of Wes Anderson's "Moonlight Kingdom" a film that is in the Cannes competition but will open long before Labor Day...

Among Cannes news that impacts films that have a shot at TFF #9:

Critic's got a preview of Jacques Audiard's "Rust and Bone" and some reviews from folks that we customarily cite are in and posted below.  Generally the early word from these friends of Telluride is positive to very positive.  Check them out.

The Playlist:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/cannes-review-jacques-audiards-rust-bone-marion-cotillard-matthias-schoenaerts-20120517

Rope of Silicon:

Anne Thompson/Thompson on Hollywood:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/cannes-audiards-anti-romance-rust-bone-showcases-cotillard

MEANWHILE...

As it did last year, Ioncinema has created a critic's panel that they will collate for a collective reaction to the competition films that are playing in Cannes and, as I did last year, I will make sure to keep you posted and provide links so that we can all handicap the Palme D'Or chances of all 22 films.  Last year, this service was invaluable in highlighting films that became Telluride possibilities.  I expect that to be true again this year.  Take a look at this Ioncinema post that introduce this year's critic's panel:

http://www.ioncinema.com/news/live-from-cannes-2012-introducing-our-cannes-critics-panel

ALSO...

Admittedly, "Rust and Bone" is one film I am very, very interested in and which I believe has about a 75% chance (now) of playing Telluride.  Another Cannes #65 film I am stoked about is Michael Haneke's "Amour".  It has an English subtitled trailer out this week and I have linked it here from Rope of Silicon:

http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/cannes-2012-english-subtitled-trailer-for-michael-hanekes-amour/

THE MASTER TEASES

And finally, this year's Great White Whale of obsession (for me anyway), Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" has continued to titillate and tease.  This week a tweet from PTA himself to PTA fan site Cigarettes and Red Vines with a slice of film negative from the film;

http://cigsandredvines.blogspot.com/2012/05/exclusive-65mm-filmstrip-reveals-first.html?m=1

And also word from the same source that someone other than PTA has eyeballed at least some of the film and found it good:

http://cigsandredvines.blogspot.com/2012/05/pta-joins-robert-downey-sr-in.html

Man, Harvey Weinstein, Tom Luddy, Gary Meyer and Julie Huntsinger...let's get together on this and premiere this film in Telluride in September...

That is all.

Raising the Curtain on Cannes

Good Morning!

The 65th Cannes Film Festival is now just days away from bowing and I expect it to be a full fledged audition for 6-10 films that will eventually end up in the Telluride fest on Labor Day weekend.  As you might expect, with the opening fast approaching the pace of the P.R. for the Cannes films has picked up.  That's what we take advantage of in today's post...

RAISING THE CURTAIN ON CANNES

We've got fresh grist for our mill for the following:

Jake Howell at Movie City News takes a fairly in depth look at two Cannes competition contenders.  Walter Salles "On the Road" (TFF #39 chances 50%) and Ken Loach's "The Angel's Share" (TFF #39 chances 30%).

FROM THE "NOT CANNES OR EVEN TELLURIDE, BUT INTRIGUING DEPARTMENT"

We have a trailer for Ben Affleck's "Argo" that looks very interesting.  It's chances for Telluride are virtually non-existent.  But I thought I' get you to the trailer via Hit Fix:

And it's not even a film...really...but looks soooo cool.  We'll have the opportunity, if we're in a city that it runs in, to see a filmed version of the Danny Boyle (Telluride fave with "Slumdog Millionaire" and "127 Hours") directed stage version of Frankenstein.  The Playlist links to the commercial teaser:

Cannes: More to Come/Penn in Cannes/MCN #2/More from Harvey?/R & B Pics/Caesar/Passes

Good Morning!

Lots of this and that from around the Cinema world today as we hit the ten day mark in our countdown to the 65th Cannes Film Festival and its function (from my perspective) as a precursor for some films that will be in Telluride starting with...

CANNES: MORE TO COME

As expected, Cannes head man Thierry Fremaux has let slip the the lineup is not 100% complete.  Peter DeBruge posted this Fremaux tweet this week:

Cannes topper confirms there are 2 or 3 more pics. RT : Oui un film demain - et un ou d'autres plus tard.

And, as a matter of fact, I believe that they've already added a new documentary.  With ten days left, it's very possible that other offerings will be added...or that there could be other movement.  Remember that last year, "The Artist" was moved into the competition category at the very last minute.
PENN IN CANNES

What Cannes is probably NOT going to add is "Gangster Squad".  There had been some speculation that we could see "Gangster" as rumors flew this week that Sean Penn would be appearing in France for some reason.  Well, it seems that reason is Haitian relief not the Reuben Fleischer film.  See this via Entertainment Weekly:

MCN #2

Meanwhile, Movie City News continues its profiles of Cannes competition films in the second part of its series and this edition focuses on Michael Haneke's "Amour" and Alain Renais' "You Haven't Seen Anything Yet".  I think the Haneke is a virtual certainty for Telluride and that the Renais has also got a least a chance at being in TFF #39.

Here's that post:

MORE FROM HARVEY?

Not long ago we reported that The Weinstein Company had signed on to distribute "Populaire" which made it at least a consideration for TFF.  Now comes word this week that TWC has added another film to its stable for possible 2012 release and that is the directorial debut of screen legend and double Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman.  The film is entitled "Quartet" and you can read about it here via The Hollywood Reporter:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/harvey-weinstein-dustin-hoffman-quartet-movie-debut-320350

Also look at its IMDb page here:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1441951/

Which begs the question...how many if any of TWC's projects will we see in Telluride?  It was 2 last year: "The Artist" and "Butter".  "The King's Speech" in 2010 and "The Road" on 2009.  The TWC list is full for the end of 2012: "The Master", "The Silver Linings Playbook", "Django Unchained", "Song for Marion", "Killing Them Softly", "The Grandmasters" (though I doubt that it's ready) plus the two mentioned above.  I assume that "Lawless" is off the table with because of its announced Aug. 31 release date. Frankly, "Song for Marion" is the film I feel most strongly about being at TFF #39.

RUST AND BONE PICS

More stills from what is shaping up to be one of my most anticipated titles that I am feeling like will make the journey from the Croisette to the San Juans and that is Jacques Audiard's "Rust and Bone".  I am on record already that I think Marion Cotillard is likely to be Oscar nominated for the film...write it down...you read it here first...

Here's the link to the new pics from The Playlist:

CAESAR

A film that I think has some Telluride potential and that is NOT on the Cannes playlist but has still been well received in other film festival competitions (especially Berlin) is "Caesar Must Die".  It centers on a jailhouse production of Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar.  Well, the film had another good week last week as reported by The Hollywood Reporter:

PASSES

And finally, word is that passes are selling like hotcakes for TFF #39...you might want to shake a leg and get yours lined up soon...

Cannes-Other Thoughts/Usual Suspects/MCN Overview

Good Morning!

CANNES-OTHER THOUGHTS

The 65th Cannes Film Festival launches in two weeks and admittedly I have been focused on a half dozen films that are in the lineup that I believe have the greatest chance (at least at this point) of being in Telluride over the Labor Day weekend.  That's not to say that there aren't other TFF #39 possibilities in the Cannes mix.  Today, I'll take a look at some that also could make their way across the Atlantic to the San Juans.

LOW LIFE (OR THE UNTITLED JAMES GRAY PROJECT)

This film stars Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Renner and Joaquin Phoenix and although Gray has never made the trip to Telluride has always seemed like a film maker who could.

Look at this story from Just Jared:

MUD

Jeff Nichols had a breakout at Sundance last year with "Take Shelter" and this is his follow up.  Again, since he's been making noise (as has Lee Daniels with Precious and who is also at Cannes with "The Paperboy") this could be a possible.  Check this story from The Playlist:
