What will  we add for 2019?

MORE FROM RENEE ZELLWEGER

Rupert Goold's Judy opened this past weekend to middling reviews except in the case of Renee Zellweger's performance in the role of the icon Judy Garland.  Since its bow in Telluride, Zellweger has become the established front runner (along with Marriage Story's Scarlett Johannson) to earn a Best Actress Oscar nomination and win the gold man in early February.

Zellweger continued to be highlighted through the end of the past week with profiles and interviews in a number of outlets.  I linked several of those last Wednesday/Thursday and am adding a couple of more of them today:

From Variety

Indiewire

PORTRAIT IS NOT FRANCE'S CHOICE

France announced its choice of film for consideration for the Best International Feature (formerly the Foreign Language Film category) for this year's Oscars and it was not Celine Sciamma's TFF featured Portrait of a Lady on Fire.  In what was thought to be a very tough decision, the French instead chose Ladj Ly's Les Miserable.  Alice Wincour's Proxima was also said to have received serious consideration.

Portrait was the recipient of the Best Screenplay award at Cannes whereas Les Miserables was a Jury Prize winner for that fest.

Complete details of the decision are covered in this story by Zack Sharf linked from Indiewire.

MOTHERLESS OPENS ROME

We also found out over the weekend that Edward Norton's Motherless Brooklyn has been chosen to open the Rome Film Festival.  That fest takes off on Oct. 17th.

The complete Rome Film Fest lineup is set to be revealed on Friday.

I have included this link to the announcement for Motherless Brooklyn from The Hollywood Reporter.

That's today's MTFB.  More on Thursday.

A Day Early...

A DAY EARLY

You may have noticed that I published a post yesterday...That was a mistake.  I accidentally punched the button for what would have been today's regularly scheduled post.  So...today's actual post is here to tell you to take a look at what I posted yesterday.  It's fairly informative.

I'll be back on Monday...unless I screw this up again...

THE BEST OF THE FESTS...

The Film Stage, much like a number of other outlets, has put together a list of films they regard as the best that emerged over the runs of the Telluride, Venice and Toronto festivals.

In their estimation that list included the following films from TFF #46:

Marriage Story
Uncut Gems
Waves.

The article also includes letter grades for a number of other films that played across the three fests including:

Portrait of a Lady on Fire- A
A Hidden Life A-
Pain and Glory A-
Parasite A-
Varda by Agnes A-
The Climb B+
Diego Maradona B+
Family Romance LLC B+
Ford v. Ferrari B+
The Report B
Motherless Brooklyn C-

In addition to that article, Indiewire posted its own unique look at other aspects of the films that have been part of the film fest triumvirate with this article that focuses on their take of the best craft work in those films.  Among the films and tech work cited are these from TFF #46:

Parasite: Production Design
Portrait of a Lady on Fire: Cinematography
Marriage Story: Film Editing
Uncut Gems: Sound Mixing
Ford v. Ferrari: General

That's today's MTFB.  I'll have more on Thursday including a look at my first Oscar predictions for directing and the supporting acting categories.

MOST VIEWED OF TFF #46

Another metric of buzz and popularity that I just started looking at last year is the number of respondents to my Peoples poll that went to each film.  By that measure, Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story won the day.  Here are the top ten for this year expressed for each film as a percentage of the total number of respondents.

1) Marriage Story 71.43%
2) Motherless Brooklyn 58.57%
3) Uncut Gems 57.14%
4) Ford v. Ferrari 55.71%
5) Parasite 52.86%
6) Judy 50.00%
6) Waves 50.00%
8) The Report 48.57%
9) Lyrebird 47.14%
10) The Two Popes 44.29 %

METACRITIC AFTER TELLURIDE, VENICE AND TORONTO

Metacritic, the aggregate critic website, posted yesterday the composite critical ratings for several of the films that played at one of the triumvirate of film festivals just concluded.  I took the opportunity to cull those aggregate ratings for films that played at Telluride and here's what they reported:

1) Marriage Story 95 (actually, the top aggregate score for any film on the list from any of the three fests)
2) Uncut Gems 88
3) The Two Popes 83
4) Waves 81
5) The Kingmaker 77
6) First Cow 76
7) The Aeronauts 73
8) Ford v. Ferrari 71
9) Judy and The Assistant 65
11) Motherless Brooklyn 62

My guess as to the absence of films such as Parasite, The Report, Pain and Glory and others is that they were likely excluded having screened earlier at either Cannes or Sundance.

The complete article from Metacritic is linked here.

That's the MTFB for this Thursday.  More here on Monday.  Have a great weekend!

The Composite Telluride / TFF Oscar History Part Four / Ford v. Ferrari New Trailer / Toronto Awards JoJo

Monday says Hello...

THE COMPOSITE TELLURIDE

Regular readers of this space know that The Composite Telluride is the melding of the ratings of The People and The Professionals.  My thought when I began putting composites together was that it might give an even more complete overview of the reactions, in a general sense, of the attendees to each year's festival

Each table shows the films, in order of best composite,  that were shared by both The People and The Pros with their composite rating in parentheses and their two respective ranked positions in brackets.

Though I didn't originally do a composite Telluride in 2012, I have gone back and created that over the weekend.

2012

1) Argo (9.25) [2/2]
2) Stories We Tell (9.10) [3/1]
3) The Attack (8.70) [5/3]

5) The Sapphires (8.36) [4/8]
6) Frances Ha (8.27) [5/9]
7) Amour (7.67) [10/6]
8) Rust and Bone (7.65) [7/16]
9) Baraka (7.50) [10/10]
10) The Iceman 7.41 [8/17]
11) No (6.61) [12/21]
12) The Gatekeepers (6.58) [14/18]
13) Hyde Park on Hudson (6.33) [14/20]
14) At Any Price (5.83) [9/24]
15) Everyday (4.88) [15/25]

2013

1) 12 Years a Slave (9.25) [1/2]
2) Tim's Vermeer (8.97) [4/1]
3) Gravity (8.75) [3/3]

TRAILERS AND SUCH FROM TFF #46 FILMS

Since last Thursday's post we have seen the emergence of a trailer as well as a behind-the-scene featurette and a clip from TFF #46 films.  Here they are:

TRAILER FOR WAVES

FEATURETTE FOR JUDY

CLIP FROM BILLIE

The word is that we can also expect a new trailer for Ford v. Ferrari very soon.

RE-THINKING THIS PROJECT

Now that TFF #46 is in the rear view...

This year's experience at TFF was different for a variety of reasons not the least of which was the decision by the Festival to deny my annual request to be accredited as a journalist.  I had been granted that status for eight years running and it became particularly useful in 2017 and 2018 as my pass status changed from the Patron Pass that had been a gift from former students who also hosted us in Telluride.

As you all know, that Patron Pass was a Golden Ticket.  When that situation changed in 2017 (and, in fairness, I had known that would be the case for a number of years) the journalist credential became very important.  It doesn't afford quite the same ease of access as a Patron Pass but it gets close.

I don't know why the request was denied but I have a couple of pretty good guesses.  At the top of the list are posts that may not have been well received by the fest folks.  And, of course, I have no doubt that the fest does not care for the central organizing principle of the blog...sussing out the possible films that will make the lineup before they're announced each year.

The festival explained in the email that denied the press credential that I was welcome to apply for the journalist accreditation again next year, but there is no guarantee that I get approved.  And I fully understand and acknowledge that the fest has every right to accredit who gets the credential and who doesn't.  I get that.

Further, I get how whiny this sounds.  Privileged and whiny.  For the vast majority of folks who attend with the Festival, Acme or Cinephile passes or who stand by in the individual ticket sales lines...this must seem, and understandably so, like just so much unearned grumpiness.

Yea...I get that too.

And yet, the whining continues...

I did eight films this year.  My average has been 11.

Other considerations...

As all of you know...Festival level passes are pricey (and required for anyone requesting journalist status) and lodging in Telluride is, let's say... a challenge both in terms of cost and availability.  Many of you know that my real gig is teaching at a public high school in Oklahoma...so you probably have a reasonable notion of my annual income.

Then there's the time and miles.  It's a lot.

I will say that it is heartening to speak to readers on line and around town.  I honestly don't know how many people read the thing but it seems like a bunch.  I also am pleased at the number of times one of the journalists (you know, the accredited ones) that come into town to cover the fest pass along the value that they place on the blog via email, Twitter or in person at the fest.  I have often wondered at what level, if any, the blog gets read by Guests of the fest.  I know that it happens at least a little bit because of a couple of past experiences.

As I've said on a number of occasions, when I first started this thing, I really didn't know if anyone would ever read it and, even if they did, whether anyone would take it seriously.

I just know that I felt untethered and lost last week and I'm not sure what I do to change that between now and next Labor Day or, more accurately, between now and when passes go on sale.

I have heard and seen in print this effort described as a "passion project" and it has been but the passion took a hit this year and I'm not sure where that lands me over the next few months.

Bottom line...maybe nothing changes...maybe it all changes.  At this point it's all up in the air (Jason Reitman/George Clooney TFF #36 reference).

Thanks for letting me ramble.

That's today's MTFB.  More to come on Thursday including THE PEOPLE'S TELLURIDE. Your deadline to rate TFF #46 films is tomorrow evening!

Keep Those Ratings Coming / TFF Oscar Project Part One / Diego Maradona Trailer / Full Disclosure

Thursday...still exhausted...

KEEP THOSE RATINGS COMING

First of all a big thanks to all of you who have already sent me your ratings of the films that you saw in Telluride last weekend.  The numbers have been steadily coming in but we're still at about half the level of respondents that we had last year so, if you saw films and would like to contribute to the collective evaluation of the films that played TFF #46...the polls are still open and will be until next Tuesday evening at 9:00 EDT/5:00 PDT.

As a reminder, I include the collective rating for films that have received at least a level of 25% of the maximum possible of number of people that actually do participate which means that films that don't get rated by a sufficient number of respondents won't make it into the list.  My feeling is that the 25% threshold provides a large enough sample size to adequately compare ratings of film to film.

At this point it looks like some films already will have enough votes to make the list including:

The Aeronauts
The Climb
Ford v. Ferrari
Judy
Lyrebird
Marriage Story
Motherless Brooklyn
Parasite
The Report
The Two Popes
Uncut Gems
Waves

On the bubble:

A Hidden Life
Inside Bill's Brain
Pain and Glory

Other films may struggle to reach the necessary threshold to make the final list.

So keep those ratings coming in.  My plan is to publish The Peoples Telluride a week from today.

Meanwhile, the Professionals are about half way in.  When those ratings get published is a bit up in the air in as far as I'm waiting for a few of them to get their ratings into me.

As always, you can rate your films via any of the methods of contact listed at the bottom of this post.

TFF OSCAR PROJECT PART ONE

Not long ago I did a quick roundup of Oscar nominees in the eight main categories from Telluride films since 2005.  After that process, I started thinking that someone needed to do an entire history of Telluride films and the Oscar.

For the past three months or so, I have gone back to the beginning and researched all of the Oscar nominees and winners in the 21 feature categories that were screened at Telluride prior to their nominations.

As a result, beginning today and over the next month or so, I will be presenting the Oscar History of the Telluride Film Festival.  Eventually, after I get the whole history posted as a part of the dual weekly postings, I will post a new page dedicated to the one stop spot for that history.

So, I start today with the TFF Oscar Project Part One 1974-1985 (nominations for the films from a particular year's fest and wins are in parentheses):

1974 (3)
The Conversation- Picture, Original Screenplay, Sound

1981 (2)
Eight Minutes to Midnight- Documentary
Three Brothers-Foreign Language

1983 (5)
Carmen- Foreign Language
Entre Nous- Foreign Language
El Norte-Original Screenplay
Seeing Red- Documentary
Testament- Best Actress- Jane Alexander (first acting nomination from TFF)

1984 (2/1)
Camila- Foreign Language
The Times of Harvey Milk-Documentary-WON (first Oscar win from TFF)

1985 (2)
Colonel Redl- Foreign Language
The Journey of Natty Gann- Costumes

Stay tuned for the continuation of this series over the next few weeks.

DIEGO MARADONA TRAILER

Released just prior to the opening of TFF #46, the folks at HBO dropped this trailer for the documentary Diego Maradona...which examines the life and career of the world famous soccer player.

Here's that trailer from YouTube:

FULL DISCLOSURE

So, as it turns out, I was NOT perfect this year.  I misread the lineup when it was released a week ago.  My final list of 25 Bets included Hirokazu Kore-eda's The Truth.  Somehow I thought it WAS in the lineup announcement and it wasn't.  Consequently, rather than being 25 for 25 for TFF #46, MTFB was actually 24 of 25.

Over the last four years the final pre-SHOW predictions have been 93 of 95.
