Best of the Week/New Mickey at TFF #40?

Good Saturday from Little Rock, AR.  I'll be in Birmingham tonight! (for the National Speech Tournament).

BEST OF THE WEEK

Take a look at the best stories I covered this week...

PARTY IN L.A....CLUES?

Last night in Los Angeles The Telluride Film Festival through a fairly discreet invitation only party designed to tease this year's 40th rendition of the festival.  The Hollywood Reporters' Scott Feinberg was there and filed a substantial story very early this morning.  You can find that linked here:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/telluride-film-festival-organizers-tease-566526

Highlights of Scott's post include:

The presence of some Hollywood heavyweights to the tune of Alexander Payne, James Gray and Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner.  What does their presence mean?

Count on "Nebraska" at TFF #40.  Gray's appearance reinforces my belief that "The Immigrant" will SHOW.  The Matt Weiner thing is really curious.  He's got a film that he's written, directed and produced entitled "You Are Here" starring Owen Wilson and Zach Galifinakis.  It has no announced distributor or release date but IMDb lists it as being in post-production.  Makes you wonder.

Maybe Weiner is just a big fan of the festival...

Here are the IMDb links for:

"Nebraska": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1821549/?ref_=sr_1

"The Immigrant": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1951181/?ref_=sr_1

"You Are Here": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1545754/

(P.S.  the cast of "You Are There" includes frequent Telluride guest Peter Bogdonavich...which is more ammo for the theory that the film plays).

Also attending the party, "The King's Speech scribe David Seidler and sometime SHOW guest, the irrepressible Norman Lloyd.

Feinberg also reveals that, as I have suspected, George Clooney was an instrumental factor in"Argo's" appearance at TFF #39 and we shouldn't be surprised if Mr. Clooney comes back...maybe not this year...but soon.

FORTE AND SQUIBB AND NEBRASKA

You probably should get used to this.  Will Forte and June Squibb in a post from HitFix/YouTube talking about Alexander Payne's "Nebraska".  Stuff like this is likely to be appearing on this blog a good deal over the next  10 weeks or so as "Nebraska" is almost certainly going to be on the SHOW's 40th playlist.  (it may actually be the #1 "Bet" when my first "ten Bets" list goes up in a couple of weeks).  Here's the link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrLvenIMW4k&feature=youtube_gdata&utm_source

DALLAS BUYERS DATE

I have mentioned Jean-Marc Vallee's "Dallas Buyers Club" starring Matthew McConnaughey as a Telluride potential film for a while now.  We got word yesterday from The Playlist that the film has settled into a Dec. 6th release date which puts it in prime time awards wise and also well within the Telluride time frame.  Here's the link to the Playlist post:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/will-this-finally-be-matthew-mcconaugheys-oscar-year-the-dallas-buyers-club-nabs-awards-season-date-20130607

By the by...I think McConnaughey seems like a very strong Best Actor candidate with this.

MC CONNAUGHEY TALKS "DALLAS' AND MORE

Anne Thompson/Thompson on Hollywood provides this video interview with actor Matthew McConnaughey whose "Dallas Buyers Club" has a shot at being a part of the Telluride lineup.

THE CONGRESS GETS DISTRIBUTION

Ari Folman's "The Congress" which played last month as a part of the non-competition portion of the Cannes Film Festival has secured North American distribution. Drafthouse and Films We Like have collaborated to attain those rights.  This may actually be a good sign to those who are hoping that Folman's long awaited follow up to his critically successful "Waltz with Bashir" (which appeared at TFF #35) might be a part of this year's Telluride lineup.  Drafthouse was represented at Telluride last year with Josh Oppenheimer's "The Act of Killing".

Drafthouse and FWL also have nabbed the rights to Cannes selection "Borgman" which may put it in play as a TFF#40 possibility as well.  ComingSoon.net has the acquisition story here:

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=105215

KATE'S PLANS

I speculated last week that Jason Reitman's new film "Labor Day" has a solid chance to make an appearance at Telluride this year.  I also conjectured that a Kate Winslet tribute in conjunction with the film made some sense.  However, the day after that post came news that Ms. Winslet has developed a medical condition which might alter that scenario...she's preggers.  The Hollywood Reporter story is linked here:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/kate-winslet-husband-ned-rocknroll-562710

Does the Winslet pregnancy rule out a tribute?  Of course it doesn't but it does add a new wrinkle into the calculation about the possibility of a tribute for the Oscar winner.

NEW MICKEY AT TFF #40

Annecy Animation has not been a stranger to the Telluride Film Festival (thank you Serge Bromberg) and if it continues for #40 expect to see this animated short in Telluride over Labor Day weekend...entitled "Get a Horse".  HitFix has the story here:

http://www.hitfix.com/motion-captured/disney-animation-shocks-and-delights-annecy-crowd-with-innovative-new-mickey-mouse-cartoon

This is where "Paperman" came from last year...so...

Congress Gets Distrib/Frances (Greta) Talks/Kate's Plans

Good Monday everyone.

I'm trying to resist the urge to manufacture a way to get to New York in the next month or two after having watched the Tony Awards last night.

THE CONGRESS GETS DISTRIBUTION

Ari Folman's "The Congress" which played last month as a part of the non-competition portion of the Cannes Film Festival has secured North American distribution. FRANCES (GRETA) TALKS

TFF #39 favorite "Frances Ha" from collaborators Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach has performed really well in its first few days of release.  Co-writer and star Gerwig was recently interviewed by Style Caster.  You can peruse that here:

http://stylecaster.com/greta-gerwig-lena-dunham-frances-ha/

Cannes Clips: The Past, Jimmy P., The Congress, The Immigrant/Cannes Critics/Add One, Take One Away/Weinstein's Reel/Late Breaking News/Rudderless Goes French

Good Monday morning!

CANNES CLIPS

As the Cannes Film Festival has begun, a number of the films that are playing have begun to release teasers, clips, trailers and the like online to gin up interest and provide sneak peaks.  As long time readers know, there's a good shot that we'll be offered a number of these Cannes films in Telluride in 3 months time.  So I'm passing along the links to various resources that posted clips/teasers this week of films that I believe have at least a fighting chance to be  part of the TFF #40 lineup.  Starting with the critically well received follow up to " A Separation" from Iranian director Asghar Farhadi-"The Past" from The Playlist:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/watch-3-clips-from-asghar-farhadis-cannes-competition-entry-the-past-starring-berenice-bejo-tahar-rahim-20130513

Premiering Saturday was Arnaud Desplechin's "Jimmy P. :The Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian" accessed via The Playlist as well:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/watch-first-clip-from-cannes-competition-film-jimmy-p-starring-benicio-del-toro-mathieu-amalric-20130512

Ari Folman's "The Congress" has been described by Cannes reviewers as "trippy" and a look at the trailer confirms that.  I'm not sure if that increases or decreases its Telluride profile.  From FirstShowing.net:

http://www.firstshowing.net/2013/cannes-robin-wright-in-trippy-trailer-for-ari-folmans-the-congress/?uid=e34cabae030fab026f1b99084af06424020d9282

And finally, the first clip from James Gray's "The Immigrant".  We saw way more than this 23 seconds in Telluride last year but I have to ask: has Marion Cotillard ever looked more beautiful?  Take a look, also from The Playlist:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/watch-first-clip-from-james-grays-cannes-competitor-the-immigrant-with-marion-cotillard-jeremy-renner-20130517

CANNES CRITICS

As they did last year, Ioncinema is providing a collation of 16 critics to the competition films.  That is linked here:

http://www.ioncinema.com/news/film-festivals/2013-cannes-critics-panel-day-5-coen-bros-inside-llewyn-davis

Off to the best start are "The Past" and "Inside Llewyn Davis".

ADD ONE, TAKE ONE OFF THE LIST

The Hollywood Reporter reports that The Weinstein Company has picked up the U.S. distribution (and more) for Stephen Frear's "Philomena" starring perpetual Oscar nominee or near nominee Judi Dench.  I'd say that puts it in the "possible" column for an appearance at Telluride.  Here's that story:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/cannes-weinstein-picks-up-stephen-524546

Frears "Tamara Drewe" played at T-ride in 2010.

Meanwhile, TWC also announced that Lee Daniels "The Butler" starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey (and a cast of thousands as U.S. Presidents and First Ladies) will bow in the U.S. on Aug. 16th taking it out of the Telluride discussion entirely.  The Aug. 16th date means no fall festival run of any kind...no Toronto, no Venice , no New York.

Rope of Silicon has the story:

http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/weinstein-dates-butler-for-august-16-release/

WEINSTEIN'S REEL

Just as they did last year at Cannes, The Weinstein Company showed off footage from a number of the films they'll be highlighting in the fall for possible awards consideration.  Last year's highlights included "Django Unchained" and "Silver Linings Playbook".  This year the presentation included: "The Immigrant", "Grace of Monaco", and "August;Osage County" among others.  I have linked a slew of reports here:

LATE BREAKING NEWS

"Labor Day" on Christmas Day...Jason Reitman's new film has a Dec. 25 limited release date.  That announcement came this weekend.  I have high hopes that Mr. Reitman will return to Telluride after an absence since 2011's "Up in the Air".  "Labor Day" stars Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin.  The story here from  The Playlist (which also suggests that Telluride is a possibility):

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/ridley-scotts-moses-movie-exodus-opens-dec-12th-2014-fassbenders-assassins-creed-on-may-22nd-2015-20130518

"The Past" in our future?...I have thought for a long time that we had a relatively good chance of catching Asghar Farhadi's follow up to his Oscar winning "A Separation" in T-ride.  The report from The Hollywood Reporter is that Sony Pictures Classics has landed the U.S. distribution makes it an even likelier proposition.  Here's the THR story:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/cannes-sony-classics-wins-us-525213

RUDDERLESS EN FRANCAIS...

Variety reported this weekend that William H. Macy directorial debut and Oklahoma set film "Rudderless" has been picked up for French distribution.  The Variety post also featured a pic of stars Selena Gomez and who I think is Billy Crudup.  Here's the link:

Cannes Roundups: The Immigrant/New Views: The Congress/NYT with Sarah Polley, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach/"August" Trailer

Good Monday morning everyone!

CANNES ROUNDUPS: THE IMMIGRANT

I continue to link Cannes previews from a variety of sites about films that I thiunk (at least pre-Cannes) have a decent shot to play at TFF #340.  This morning a look at James Gray's "The Immigrant" starring Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Renner and Joaquin Phoenix.  Here are previews from Movie City News and HitFix:

http://moviecitynews.com/2013/05/countdown-to-cannes-james-gray/

http://www.hitfix.com/in-contention/cannes-check-2013-james-grays-the-immigrant

NEW VIEWS OF "THE CONGRESS"

Ari Folman's follow-up to "Waltz with Bashir" has been a long time coming but will finally premiere at Cannes in competition.  Rope of Silicon has a couple of new stills from the film in this post:

http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/cannes-2013-new-looks-at-robin-wright-in-ari-folmans-the-congress/

TFF #39: THE NEW YORK TIMES WITH SARAH POLLEY ON VIDEO

Sarah Polley's "Stories We Tell" was a TFF #39 favorite and is getting its release amid a good deal of publicity and outstanding reviews.  Here the New York Times has posted video of her discussing the project:

http://www.nytimes.com/video/2013/05/09/movies/100000002217059/sarah-polley-on-stories-we-tell.html?partner=rss&emc=rss&smid=tw-nytmovies

TFF #39: THE NEW YORK TIMES WITH GRETA GERWIG AND NOAH BAUMBACH

Also rolling towards release is Noah Baumbach's collaboration with Greta Gerwig: "Frances Ha' was a delight at TFF #40 and now the rest of the world gets to share that.  The New York Times talked to them about the film:

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/12/movies/greta-gerwig-in-noah-baumbachs-frances-ha.html?partner=rss&emc=rss&smid=tw-nytmovies&_r=0

TRAILER FOR "AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY"

And the first "August: Osage County" has been released.  I have linked to the trailer via YouTube:

I have also linked a story about the trailer release from The Playlist:

Rudderless Journey Begins/Burning for The Furnace/The Nugget Re-opens/Folman's Congress at Cannes/The Immigrant (Can someone please title this film?)/Is "The Past" in Our Future?

Good Monday morning!

RUDDERLESS JOURNEY BEGINS

William H. Macy and crew scouting locations in Guthrie, OK. this week.

William H. Macy's "Rudderless" is underway.  Friend of MTFB and script co-author Casey Twenter posted photos from the shoot yesterday here in Oklahoma.

First scene on the first day of shooting for "Rudderless"

William H. Macy with a thumbs as he wraps the first day of the "Rudderless" shoot yesterday.

And I have linked to this story that ran, in part, in the Daily Oklahoman:

BURNING FOR THE FURNACE/OUT OF THE FURNACE

Friend of MTFB Kristopher Tapley of InContention/Hit Fix tweeted earlier this week an exciting prospect of a really intriguing film making the program at T-ride:

https://twitter.com/kristapley/status/324703726344486912

"Out of the Furnace" was also listed as a Telluride possibility in the HitFix "Oscar Contenders 2014: 25 Films to Watch For" post on Feb. 28th.  It's #19 in the photo gallery.

http://www.hitfix.com/in-contention/oscars-2014-contenders-25-films-to-watch-for

Director and co-writer Scott Cooper's debut film was "Crazy Heart" which led to Jeff Bridges winning a Best Actor Oscar.  It also won the Oscar for Best Original Song and earned Maggie Gyllenhall a Supporting Actress nomination.

"Furnace" boasts an impressive list of names in the cast: Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Willem Dafoe, Woody Harrelson, Zoe Saldana, Forest Whitaker and Sam Shepherd.  It's IMDB entry is here:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1206543/?ref_=sr_1

THE NUGGET RE-OPENS

News from Telluride that The Nugget, the actual movie theater in town, has re-opened and is ready for business.   The Telluride Daily Planet reports that the theater will be run by the Telluride Film Festival directly including programming.  The complete story is linked here:

http://www.telluridenews.com/articles/2013/04/19/news/doc51707509eba91571383769.txt

FOLMAN'S CONGRESS AT CANNES

It was something of a surprise Thursday that the announcement of the Cannes lineups did not include Ari Folman's "The Congress".  I passed on word that it was likely to be announced for some part of the program later and sure enough, on Friday, it was announced as the opening film for the Director's Fortnight part of the Cannes program.  See the linked tweet below from Film Festival News:

https://twitter.com/filmfest/status/325219614768377856/photo/1

THE IMMIGRANT...OR LOWLIFE...OR THE NIGHTINGALE...

Here's a new image and a few words about James Gray's "The Immigrant" which has been previously titled "Lowlife" and "The Nightingale".  This film was teased at TFF #39 as a part of the Marion Cotillard tribute I attended with a screening of a few minutes of the film and the presence of Mr. Gray himself.  I'm hoping that signaled a possibility that the entire film shows this year...and maybe a return visit from Ms. Cotillard.

IS "THE PAST" IN OUR FUTURE?

I have a lot of anticipation for Asghar Farhadi's follow up to "A Separation".  It's playing in competition next month at Cannes.  Previously we had seen a trailer in French.  Now comes an English subtitled trailer linked here from both Rope of Silicon and The Playlist.

Quick notes: I'm assuming "The Immigrant" is now the title for what we have been referring to as "Lowlife" and occasionally as "The Nightingale".

Further word this morning is that Ari Folman's "The Congress" will be added to the lineup.

Films that seem to draw immediate Telluride attention include both "The Immigrant" and "The Congress" as well as Alexander Payne's "Nebraska" and Asghar Farhadi's "The Past".  I also get a vibe for, as I mentioned Monday, that "Blood Ties" and "Arnuad Desplechin's "Jimmy P."

I have included one final Cannes spec piece this morning from The Movie City News' (and friend of MTFB) Jake Howell.  Jake had some interesting insights.  Check the post here and see how close he was:

http://moviecitynews.com/2013/04/divining-cannes-2013-the-aggregating/

BLOOD TIES IMAGES

Marion Cotiilard on the "Blood Ties" set (Just Jared)

Included as an out of competition film this morning is "Blood Ties".  French actor Guillaume Canet has stepped behind the camera to remake an English language version of a French thriller that he originally starred in.

I've been thinking recently that it might have a Telluride ride on Labor Day.  I don't have any tangible reason...no production company ties to past festivals...no U.S. distributor yet...just a vibe.

Here's a look at first images from the film posted via The Playlist:

CALL FOR ENTRY

Monday I posted a link to a story about Telluride opening the process for film submissions for this year's fest.  Here's the actual lowdown from TFF's actual website:

More Cannes Spec/Ginger and Rosa Emerging

Good Monday morning.

MORE CANNES SPECULATION

The Cannes 66 guessing game continues with a very extensive post from the folks at The Playlist going up earlier this week that offers their best insights into the films that could play in France in May consequently providing us with a window to view potential Telluride players.  You can find that post here:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/predicting-the-2013-cannes-film-festival-lineup-who-will-join-the-great-gatsby-on-the-croisette-20130314

Among the lists I found these titles that I'd think might have the best chance at the Cannes/Telluride double play:

On their "Strong Contenders" list: "Lowlife", "The Past","Twelve Years a Slave" and "The Congress".

On their "Possibilities" list: "Blood Ties".

And no film on their "Long Shot" list appears to be particularly Telluride-y...at least for now.

"GINGER AND ROSA" EMERGING

As Sally Potter's "Ginger and Rosa" has been on the brink of release this last week it and its film makers and cast have been increasingly on display.  Here I have included a couple of posts about the film.  First from "Women and Hollywood" an interview with Potter from the Toronto Festival last fall:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/womenandhollywood/tiff-interview-with-sally-potter-writer-and-director-of-ginger-and-rosa-1

And also from The Hollywood Reporter a profile of the film's star Elle Fanning:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/elle-fanning-grows-up-ginger-429035

"Ginger and Rosa" opened in limited release this past weekend.
