Anna Teased/Gus Promise/Warner's

Good Thursday Everyone!

Finally saw "Prometheus" last night...liked it...a lot.  Kind of want to see it again and will be excited when the next chapter comes along...

ANNA TEASED

"Anna Karenina" is getting the P.R. roll out this week with a trailer and poster.  "Anna" is directed by Joe Wright and follows the generally well received 2007 film "Atonement" (83% all critics/88% "top" critics on Rotten Tomatoes),and his less well received  2011's "Hanna" (71%/59%) and 2009's "The Soloist" (56%/62%).

It's certainly a possible Telluride choice.  Factors pointing toward its possible inclusion: the occasional T-ride connection to distributor Focus Features ("Into the Wild" TFF '07, "Catch a Fire" TFF '06).  Focus also is distributing "Hyde Park on Hudson" which will appear on this summer's first "Ten Bets" list on Monday...so my bet is that Focus is in Telluride for that at least and might desire to double dip.

Both of "Anna's" production companies, Working Title and Studio Canal,  were a part of "Catch a Fire's" production.

So, let's say it's a 25% possible...

Here's the trailer:

GUS PROMISE

Gus Van Sant was once a frequent invitee to the Telluride Film Festival ("Elephant" in 2003, "To Die For" in 1995)...but hasn't been back in a long time ( last year's "Restless" was not well received critically and 2008's Best Picture contender "Milk" didn't come to T-ride).

But he's got a new film in play this year featuring his old "Good Will Hunting" collaborator Matt Damon and written by Damon and "The Office's" John Krasinski  (who also co-stars) entitled "Promised Land" and this week The Playlist contends that it just might be ready for the end of the year and that a "fall festival" appearance is a possibility.

Here's The Playlist story:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/gus-van-sants-the-promised-land-could-hit-theaters-by-the-end-of-the-year-not-an-anti-fracking-movie-says-john-krasinski-20120618

And the "Promised Land" IMDb page:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2091473/

The producer and distributor is the above mentioned Focus Features...so...maybe they go for three films in TFF #39.

WARNER BROTHERS

Deadline. com reported last week that at least one "major" studio was showing film to TFF programmers in an effort to polish Oscar chances who were in L.A. during the L.A. Film Fest and so this week I have been trying to nail down some possibilities.  Today: Warner Brothers.

According to their IMDb page (http://www.imdb.com/company/co0026840/) WB is distributor for a ton of Oscar bait  films: Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" (DiCaprio, Maguire and Telluride favorite Carey Mulligan), Ben Affleck's "Argo"( Affleck, Goodman, Arkin) , The Wachowski Bros."Cloud Atlas"(Hanks, Sarandon, Berry), Robert Lorenz's "Trouble with the Curve" (Eastwood, Adams), and Ruben Fleischer's "Gangster Squad" (Penn, Gosling, Brolin).  Oh, and that "Hobbit" thing.

There's a lot there and WB has played in Telluride before...just not recently.  They distributed "Slumdog Millionaire" in 2008 and "Rails and Ties" in 2007...Allison Eastwood's directing debut...I have a nice New Sheridan story about her.  WB also produce "Benjamen Button" and "zodiac" which were a pert of the festival's David Fincher tribute in 2008.

For my money...if it was Warners...I'd guess "Argo" and "Curve" would be the best possibilities and "Gatsby" on the outside.

Tomorrow, I'll spend a little time assessing these "majors" and why it might be true.

More later...

Venice Spec/20th Century Fox (and Won't Back Down)/Master's Facebook/

Good Wednesday to All!

VENICE SPECULATION

We're probably about 5 weeks away from the official lineup announcement for the Venice Film Festival.
We already know that it's under new direction from a past director.
We know it will be smaller (near Telluride-size in terms of the total number of films screened).
We know that the new director has claimed that he's likely to have "The Master", "To the Wonder" and Brian DePalma's new film, "Passion", though I think these might all be wishful thinking rather than hard and fast commitments.
We know that the overlap between Telluride and Venice films is usually very small...last year: 3 films (to the best of my ability to dig  this up): "Shame", "A Dangerous Method" and "Diana Vreeland".  And 3 is about normal.
Overlap in 2010: "Black Swan" and "Letter to Elia"
Overlap in 2009: "The Road", "Life During Wartime" and "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans"
So Venice is usually a lineup that winnows Telluride possibilities...

All that to get to this: The Playlist has a big Venice speculation piece posted yesterday.

Highlights include two specific Telluride references in their analysis of Derek Cianfrance's "The Place Beyond the Pines" and David O. Russell's "The Silver Linings Playbook".  "Pines" is Cianfrance's follow up to the very well received "Blue Valentine".  "Silver Linings" is the latest project from the director of "The Fighter" and "Three Kings" and will be distributed by The Weinstein Company.

Some other intriguing notes from The Playlist post:
They appear to believe the claims about "The Master", "To the Wonder" and "Passion" as they have them listed as "strong possibilities" for Venice along with "Anna Karenina", "Argo", "Gangster Squad" and "Something in the Air" among others.

Among "possibilities" they list: "Life of Pi", "The Place Beyond the Pines" and "Love is All You Need".

Among the "long shots" are: "Seven Psychopaths", "The Silver Linings Playbook", "Django Unchained","Low Life", "Cloud Atlas", "Inside Llewyn Davis" and "Zero Dark Thirty".

The complete post is here:

20TH CENTURY FOX

Continuing to look at "Major" studios who might have been the studio reference by reports from the L.A. Film Festival that a so-called "major" was dangling bait in front of Telluride programmers we review the late year offerings from 20th Century Fox.

It looks like four possibilities emerge:

Ang Lee's "Life of Pi"...which I'm watching anyway because Lee's been represented at Telluride before with "Brokeback Mountain" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" perhaps most notable.

Curtis Hanson's "Of Men and Mavericks"...mostly because I met Hanson at Telluride a few years ago.

And Daniel Barnz's "Won't Back Down" starring Viola Davis in what purports to be this year's vehicle for Ms. Davis to challenge for the Best Actress Oscar that Meryl Streep won over her last year.

Won't Back Down" is featured in a post this week from The Playlist with links to 4 clips from the film.

Here's one of them:

Check others here at The Playlist:

And of course, the big dog Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" which Fox is co-producing with Dreamworks and Amblin and a bunch of others.  I'll have more to say about it on Friday. ("Lincoln's IMDb page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0443272/)

20th Century Fox has been represented at Telluride in the past with: "The Descendants" (2011), "127 Hours", "Never Let Me Go" and "Black Swan (2010) and "The Savages" (2007) and others.

My take:  "Life of Pi" chances are at 30%, "Of Men and Mavericks" 15% and "Won't Back Down" at 25%.

Tomorrow a look at what Warner Brothers might have tried to play with if they're the studio in question.

Master #2/Paramount/Clooney in August

Good Tuesday everyone!  Taking forever to get the blog loaded today.

MASTER #2

The film sites are abuzz since late last night with a second teaser/trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" which is far and away the film I am most energized about for the coming fall/winter.

I am crossing my fingers that this plays at the Telluride festival this year but to be honest, I'd guess it's chances at about 45%.  A lot depends on the strategy The Weinstein Company chooses to pursue vis a vis Oscar campaigning.

I still think that "The Master" could play T-ride, but Harvey has a lot of arrows in his quiver this year and he/they may well think that they'd benefit from this PTA film being a Venice/New York thing.

I'm not alone, however, in at least thinking that it's still a possible Telluride choice as, in the midst of all the posting about the new teaser Jeff Wells of Hollywood Elsewhere wrote today:

"If Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master is going to play the Venice Film Festival, as rumored, surely there's a decent chance it'll also play Telluride...no? Along with Terrence Malick's To The Wonder and Brian De Palma's Passion withRachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace (which will probably be minor at best -- DePalma's best days are long past)"

Which makes me feel a little more confident about keeping it on our list of Telluride possibles.\\Here's the link to the rest of Wells' story and the teaser as well as comments (including mine):

PARAMOUNT

In light of commentary this weekend in a Pete Hammond post for Deadline.com that suggested that one of the major studios had been plying their wares for the head honchos of the Telluride fest, I have taken it upon myself this week to look at what those possibilities might be.  Today, I'm looking at Paramount and we can probably rule them out pretty quickly.  Despite past recent participation at Telluride with "Up in the Air", "Benjamen Button", "Zodiac", "Babel" and "Paranormal Activity" and probable future Telluride films "Labor Day" and "Nebraska" as of right now they have only one film that might be conceivably considered Oscar material and that's the Denzel Washington starrer and Robert Zemeckis directed "Flight".  And frankly, I don't think it sounds like either a Telluride picture or much of an Oscar one for that matter.  So I'm writing Paramount off.

Here's the IMDb page for Paramount Pictures:http://www.imdb.com/company/co0023400/

"Flight's" IMDb page is here:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1907668/

Tomorrow a more likely suspect in 20th Century Fox.

CLOONEY IN AUGUST

Word late yesterday that there are new producers coming on board The Weinstein Company's big 2013 prestige project.  The film adaptation of the massive Broadway success "August: Osage County" now has George Clooney and Grant Heslov as a part of the team. Clooney was one of last year's tributees at Telluride.  Details here:

It all seemed a little weird until you put together the fact that the film will be directed by John Wells with whom Clooney worked back in their "E.R." days...

More Major Spec/Trailers from Ebert/Trailers for London

Good Morning...back in the Oklahoma Panhandle...

MORE MAJOR SPECULATION

If you looked in on this space Saturday you saw this tidbit repeated from a Pete Hammond post from Deadline.com:

“The Telluride Film Festival threw a party at the London Hotel on Sunset the night before the LAFF launch to tout their upcoming Labor Day weekend 39th edition of a fest that grows in importance every year as a key start to awards season. Fest directors Gary Meyer, Tom Luddy and Julie Huntsinger are still putting the program together and, as is the custom, won’t announce it in advance.  But it’s clear this fest which draws Oscar-hopefuls from the likes of SPC, Searchlight, The Weinstein Company, Focus  and others has also attracted the attention of the major studios with eyes on Oscar this year.  At least one of them was busy showing their wares to the Telluride honchos this week in hopes of making the cut. “

Which has kept my mind whirling for the last 48 hours...which studios? what films?  Certainly it seems that Hammond is implying more than one.

Consequently, during the course of this week, I'll take a look at the "major" studio offerings that are expected as we move to the end of the year that most think want to be Oscar contenders and at least see if we can discern what the field of possibilities looks like.

Today we start with Universal Pictures which looks to be distributing two "Oscar-y" films: Tom Hooper's "Les Miserables" and Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty" (the Osama Bin Laden/Seal Team 6 film).

The Bigelow film seems more "Telluride-ish" (as I thought "The Hurt Locker" might be back in 2008) but Tom Hooper had a great deal of success out of Telluride for "The King's Speech" in 2010..so both films seem plausible Telluride contenders if Universal has decided to make that play and T-ride's heads deem them acceptable.

Other connections..."Les Miz's" production company Working Title had a production connection to Telluride 2006 "sneak" "Catch a Fire".

"Zero Dark Thirty's" IMDb page is here:

"Les Miserables" IMDb page is here:

We'll look at Paramount tomorrow.

TRAILERS FROM EBERT

Roger Ebert has posted a collection of what he terms "out of the mainstream" trailers.  They include both "The Master's" teaser featuring Joaquin Phoenix and "Hyde Park on Hudson" both of which I have linked to in earlier posts and have at least some Telluride potential.  There are also many other films linked here.  Take a look:

Best of the Week/Major Studio Wants to Play/

Good Saturday morning from Santa Fe!

BEST OF THE WEEK- ANOTHER LOOK AT THE KEY STORIES FROM THIS BLOG

YOUR GUEST DIRECTOR IS...

As I reported in this space back on Mar. 6, the guest director for TFF #38 is British author Geoff Dyer.  The official announcement began leaking yesterday and then the press release from Telluride was emailed overnight.  Here's the official release:

BERKELEY, CA – Telluride Film Festival, presented by National Film Preserve LTD., is thrilled to announce its 2012 Guest Director, Geoff Dyer. The award-winning writer is set to select a series of films to present at the 39thTelluride Film Festival running over Labor Day Weekend, August 31 – September 3, 2012. The Guest Director program is sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Festival directors Julie Huntsinger, Tom Luddy and Gary Meyer annually select one of the world’s great film enthusiasts to join them in the creation of the Festival’s program lineup. The Guest Director serves as a key collaborator in the Festival’s programming decisions, bringing new ideas and overlooked films to Telluride.

“I’ve always been a fan of Geoff’s writing,” said Tom Luddy, co-founder and co-director of Telluride Film Festival. He and I were introduced while he was writing his book Zona, an in-depth exploration of Andrei Tarkovsky’s filmStalker. Around that time Sight & Sound asked Geoff what his five favorite books on film were. His top choice was David Thomson’s A Biographical Dictionary of Film in its first edition. The revised second, third, fourth and fifth editions were picks two, three, four and five. His answer convinced me that he and I are on the same wavelength film-wise. Zona is, in my opinion, one of the best books ever written on a single film. I’ve had a wonderful time dialoguing with him about his film selections and know we have another winner in our series of Guest Directors.”

British writer Geoff Dyer is the author of four novels: Paris Trance, The Search, The Colour of Memory, and, most recently, Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi; two collections of essays, Anglo-English Attitudes and Working the Room; and five genre-defying titles: But Beautiful, The Missing of the Somme, Out of Sheer Rage, Yoga For People Who Can’t Be Bothered To Do It and The Ongoing Moment.

A collection of essays from the last twenty years entitled Otherwise Known as the Human Condition was published in the US in April 2011 and won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism in March 2012.

Dyer’s new book Zona: A Book about a Film about a Journey to a Room, was published in February 2012 byCanongate, UK and in March 2012 by Pantheon, US. The book takes the reader through the film Stalker by the great Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky, and, like the film itself, confronts the most mysterious and enduring questions of life and how to live. Dyer guides his readers on a 200-page shot by shot exploration of the film and his own personal obsession with cinema.

“I'm very conscious of the honour of being the latest in a long line of very distinguished guest directors at a great festival, but I'm even more conscious of the pleasure I'm already having (discovering new films, re-watching old favourites and discovering if they have stood up to the test of time),” said Dyer.  “Even more than the honour and the pleasure, though, I'm glad finally to be putting an end to the envy I felt whenever I met people who'd just come back from Telluride and insisted on telling me that they'd had the most wonderful time of their lives. I'm no stranger to having a good time over the Labour Day weekend: I used to go to Burning Man and was quite evangelical about it. I fully expect to be as passionate a convert to Telluride.’”
Dyer’s awards are as follows:  But Beautiful winner of the 1992 Somerset Maugham Prize and shortlisted for theMail on Sunday/John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize;
Out of Sheer Rage finalist for a National Book Critics Circle Award, US; Yoga For People Who Can’t Be Bothered To Do It winner of the 2004 W H Smith Best Travel Book Award;
The Ongoing Moment winner of the ICP Infinity Award for Writing on Photography;
Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi winner of the 2009 Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Best Comic Novel;
Otherwise Known as the Human Condition winner of the 2011 National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism
Other honors include the Lannan Literary Fellowship, 2003;
Winner of the E. M. Forster Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, 2006;
GQ Writer of the Year Award, 2009
In keeping with Telluride Film Festival tradition, Dyer’s film selections, along with the rest of the Telluride lineup will be kept secret and unveiled on Opening Day, August 31, 2012.

Past Guest Directors include Caetano Veloso, Michael Ondaatje, Alexander Payne, Salman Rushdie, Peter Bogdanovich, B. Ruby Rich, Phillip Lopate, Errol Morris, Bertrand Tavernier, John Boorman, John Simon, Buck Henry, Laurie Anderson, Stephen Sondheim, G. Cabrera Infante, Peter Sellars, Don DeLillo, J.P. Gorin, Edith Kramer and Slavoj Zizek.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has provided continued generous support to Telluride Film Festival’s Guest Director series making 2012 the fifth consecutive year the Academy has awarded a $50,000 grant to underwrite the program. The Academy Foundation – the Academy’s cultural and educational wing – annually distributes more than $1 million to film scholars, cultural organizations and film festivals throughout the U.S. and abroad. The Foundation also presents the Academy’s rich assortment of screenings and other public programs each year.

For more information or to download an image of Geoff Dyer, please visit: www.geoffdyer.com.

39th Festival passes are now available at www.telluridefilmfestival.org.

Next year Telluride Film Festival will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary, scheduled for August 29 – September 2, 2013.  To commemorate this special occasion an additional day has been added to the usual four-day Festival, making room for a five-day bounty of special programming and festivities. Passes will be available for purchase beginning in March, 2013.

Here's what I reported on Mar.6:

TFF #39 Has a Guest Director:

Well placed sources report that it will be British author Geoff Dyer as guest director of the 39th edition of the Telluride Film Festival.

Amazon search result for Geoff Dyer:

Barnes and Noble search result:

And then further confirmation came on Mar. 19:

CONFIRMATION

I reported in this space 12 days ago that I believed that I had uncovered reliable evidence that this year's Telluride Film Festival guest director would be British author Geoff Dyer.  Now comes confirmation from none other than TFF co-founder Tom Luddy who was present at a reading by the author in the San Fran Bay Area last Thursday night.  Luddy was interviewed by The El Cerrito Patch which reported the following:

"In what may be a world scoop for El Cerrito Patch, Luddy confided to the audience that Dyer will be the guest director this year for the 39th Telluride festival. Luddy's revelation elicited audience applause. "We haven't officially announced that because we'd like to have a press release to announce the fact a little bit later in the year," Luddy said. The guest director selects six of the films."

Nice try Patch, but readers found that info in this space on March 6.  Still, good to see the confirmation this soon after I dropped the story.  Frankly I thought I was going to have to wait until the official announcement which is likely to be in June.

You can see the entire El Cerrito Patch article here:

Here's Anne Thompson's/Thompson on Hollywood's take on the announcement:

So there you have it...Geoff Dyer is your 2012 Guest Director.

40TH BIRTHDAY PRESENT

Tucked into the press release at the very end is this nugget; the festival will be 5 days long next year to celebrate the milestone.  All I can say is yippee!  Another day of heaven is more than I could ask for.

OSCAR PICKS

One of the best Oscarologist sites around has their first pass at predictions up as of yesterday.  Kris Tapley and Guy Lodge have collaborated to get their first list together over at InContention/HitFix.  Among their prognostications are included such potential Telluride 2012 fare as:
"Anna Karenina", "Argo", "Life of Pi", "The Master"' "Amour", "Rust and Bone", "Hyde Park on Hudson", and MTFB nudge "Six Sessions".

Check their first predix and their analysis as they fearlessly make them here:

RUST DATE

Jacques Audiard's "Rust and Bone" continues to be positioned in ways that foster my belief that it will play as a part of the Telluride 2012 program.  The latest news came yesterday as Sony Pictures Classics announced that it will be released stateside on Nov. 16th.

Here's the story from The Playlist:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/jacques-audiards-rust-and-bone-hits-on-nov-16th-peter-jacksons-west-of-mempis-arrives-on-dec-28th-20120613

"Rust and Bone's" IMDb page is here:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2053425/

NO

Another Cannes film that came into view as a possible/probable Telluride choice is Pablo Larrain's "No" starring Gael Garcia Bernal.  I really think that this also makes the TFF #39 program.

Mubi.com has a look at the film here:
http://mubi.com/notebook/posts/super-cannes-pablo-larrains-no

"No's" IMDb page is here:

MAJOR WANTS TO PLAY

Deadline.com's Pete Hammond posted a story yesterday that focused primarily on the opening of the L.A. film fest but it also included a number of references to this year's Telluride fest as the TFF crew was in L.A. host a TFF-centirc soiree.  The article includes references to likely TFF choices "Rust and Bone" and "Amour".  Perhaps the most intriguing Telluride note came in the last paragraph of Hammond's post:

"Meanwhile the LAFF isn’t the only film festival action taking place this week in Los Angeles. The Telluride Film Festival threw a party at the London Hotel on Sunset the night before the LAFF launch to tout their upcoming Labor Day weekend 39th edition of a fest that grows in importance every year as a key start to awards season. At least one of them was busy showing their wares to the Telluride honchos this week in hopes of making the cut."

Which leads to a couple of points:

1) Which studio and what films?

2) It's not that the majors don't play Telluride, but their participation is usually a small part of the festival.  One wonders if this bit of news signals a larger presences for 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Universal etc.

3) And finally, you have to believe that Hammond's line "a fest that grows in importance every year as a key start to awards season." (which is something I have been saying the last five years) is reflected by a greater desire from the majors to be included on the Telluride bill of fare.

Have a great weekend.  More later...

Big Picture/Life of Pi Images/Coming Attractions: 12 Years

Good Friday morning form Santa Fe!

BIG PICTURE

I'm sure many of you have seen the Vanity Fair 100th Anniversary photo for Paramount films.  It's very cool...impressive.  Some 116 stars and directors gathered together for the shot.  Some huge names and many, many past Telluride participants.  What's kind of entertaining is trying to figure out why some of the "lesser lights" made the cut for posing...Katie Featherston anyone? (who was in Telluride film "Paranormal Activity".

Here's the link to the Vanity Fair post complete with a magnifying and identification tool

Fox 2000 continues to slowly role out info, pictures, etc. for And Lee's "Life of PI" set for a Nov. 12th release date.  A clip found its way online yesterday to a variety of forums and though it's really short, it is intriguing.  Here are multiple stories/links:

COMING ATTRACTIONS; "12 YEARS A SLAVE"

Steve McQueen has had both of his first directing efforts "Hunger" and "Shame" make appearances at Telluride and I suspect a reasonably good chance that his next project "12 Years a Slave" will make it there in 2013.

We have been seeing a number of casting stories concerning the film including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch and Brad Pitt.

Here are the stories I have collected concerning the film and its casting:

Rust Date/No/Labor Day Under Way

Good Thursday morning from Santa Fe, New Mexico!

RUST DATE

Jacques Audiard's "Rust and Bone" continues to be positioned in ways that foster my belief that it will play as a part of the Telluride 2012 program.  The latest news came yesterday as Sony Pictures Classics announced that it will be released stateside on Nov. 16th.

Here's the story from The Playlist:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/jacques-audiards-rust-and-bone-hits-on-nov-16th-peter-jacksons-west-of-mempis-arrives-on-dec-28th-20120613

"Rust and Bone's" IMDb page is here:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2053425/

NO

Another Cannes film that came into view as a possible/probable Telluride choice is Pablo Larrain's "No" starring Gael Garcia Bernal.  I really think that this also makes the TFF #39 program.

Mubi.com has a look at the film here:
http://mubi.com/notebook/posts/super-cannes-pablo-larrains-no

"No's" IMDb page is here:

LABOR DAY UNDER WAY

And after numerous news releases concerning casting choices, and my inaugural "Coming Attractions" post last week, word comes that Jason Reitman's "Labor Day" has begun filming.  That according to this tweet from Rope of Silicon:

"Jason Reitman's 'Labor Day' is underway, and I just updated the film's synopsis: http://t.co/x9dU4qzo"

Not much other news as the link takes you to the description of "Labor Day" on the ROS website.

I'm looking for "Labor Day" to be a part of Telluride's 40th festival/celebration in 2013.

Organized Crime/Another Django/More Knight/Al on Stage

Good Wednesday!

ORGANIZED CRIME

In 2009 Matteo Garrone made quite a splash at Telluride with "Gomorrah" a film set in the world of Italy's organized crime.  Garrone, last  month, made another splash at Cannes with his new film "Reality" which won the Grand Prix.  Under normal circumstances, I would have "Reality" down with about a 60% chance of being in Telluride...but now there are complications.

Reports from Italy tell us that Garrone may be in serious legal trouble for having consorted with the mob in Italy in order to make "Gomorrah".  That could put the film's T-ride chances in jeopardy and the director in prison.  Here are two stories with details:

The Hollywood Reporter:

ANOTHER DJANGO

"Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" was all over the place last week as it released its first teaser/trailer.  Now comes an international version which reportedly has some extra/different footage.  I have linked to it via  The Playlist:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/watch-international-trailer-for-django-unchained-puts-new-footage-into-the-chamber-20120613

MORE KNIGHT

Pictures from the set of Terrence Malick's on-going effort called "Knight of Cups" continues to ooze online.  Today shots include Cate Blanchett.  From The Playlist:

AL ON STAGE

And finally, I saw Al Pacino on stage a couple of years ago  in Central Park on the closing night of Shakespeare on the Park's production of "Merchant of Venice".  At the time I thought it could be the last time Pacino was ever on a stage doing live theater.  Of course, they transferred that production onto Broadway. Still, I said to myself, "it might be the last play he does".  Until yesterday, that might have been true.  Yesterday came the news that Pacino will be appearing in a new mounting of David Mamet's classic "Glengarry Glen Ross"...playing the role Jack Lemmon played in the 1992 film.

Here's the story from Te Playlist:

More Dyer/Oscar Picks/Boyle in London/Poots in Cups

Good Tuesday!

MORE DYER

The twitterverse was inundated with the news yesterday that British author Geoff Dyer had been officially announced as the Guest Director for TFF #39.  And as I have been only too happy to note, readers of this blog have known that for 3 months.  More surprising to me, yesterday, was the announcement that TFF #40 will add a day to its schedule and be a five day event next year opening on Thursday Aug. 29...

I'm terribly excited about the extra day and my imagination is running amok as I think to myself..."if they're going to add an extra day, what other very cool plans to they have?"

The year between the close of each festival and the beginning of the next is always a time fraught with anticipation and excitement and the notion that the fest will be longer and may go beyond the phantasm that it customarily is will mean that next year's 360 day countdown will heighten that anticipation and excitement even more...if that's possible.

Here's the link to the official announcement on the Telluride Film Festival website:

BOYLE IN LONDON

Danny Boyle...friend of TFF ("Slumdog Millionaire", "127 Hours"), perhaps future TFF attendee ("Trance") and nice guy is getting ever closer to directing the opening for the Olympics in London.  The Hollywood Reporter has a story/interview about some of what we can expect to see:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/london-2012-olympics-opening-danny-boyle-336281

I'm still holding out for a Beatles/Floyd/Zep/Stones portion of that opening.

POOTS IN CUPS

Sounds awful, doesn't it?  Imogen Poots reportedly filming Terrence Malick's "Knight of Cups".  Pictures included from the set via The Playlist:

Your Guest Director/40th Birthday Present/

Good Monday!

Dyer’s awards are as follows:  But Beautiful winner of the 1992 Somerset Maugham Prize and shortlisted for theMail on Sunday/John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize;
Out of Sheer Rage finalist for a National Book Critics Circle Award, US; Yoga For People Who Can’t Be Bothered To Do It winner of the 2004 W H Smith Best Travel Book Award;
The Ongoing Moment winner of the ICP Infinity Award for Writing on Photography;
Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi winner of the 2009 Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Best Comic Novel;
Otherwise Known as the Human Condition winner of the 2011 National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism
Other honors include the Lannan Literary Fellowship, 2003;
Winner of the E. M. Forster Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, 2006;
