If It Had Happened-The Tributes? / Sniffing Out Another Possible / What Might Have Been-Chicago 7 Looks

IF IT HAD HAPPENED-THE TRIBUTES?

Because my mind works the way it does (or doesn't?), after TFF announced that TFF #47 was not to be but that they had a list of 20 or so films that would have been programmed and that all of the tribute recipients were planning to attend, I got to wondering who those folks might be.

Then with Indiewire's story about some of the titles they thought might make the lineup when it is ultimately revealed, I put together a third new list of films that are my "Bets" to make the TFF list.  And from that I began to speculate and extrapolate tribute possibilities.

If you remember last Monday's 3rd Ten Bets:

10) Fireball
9) John Prine: Hello In There
8) There Is No Evil
7) Soul
6) The French Dispatch
5) Lover's Rock (Small Axe)
4) Mangrove (Small Axe)
3) Notturno
2) Nomadland
1) Ammonite

Other possibilities: Undine, Forgotten We'll Be, Untitled Garbus/Cortes Voting Rights Documentary,  The Secrets We Keep, American Utopia (probably not now as it has been named Toronto's opening night film) and French Exit.

Soooo...let's look at some of more intriguing possibilities:

From #1 Ammonite:  You could see either Kate Winslet or Saoirse Ronan getting named.  Rumors have it that Ronan might well have been a possible tributee in 2017 with Lady Bird.  Winslet was in T-ride with the cast of Steve Jobs in 2015.

From #2 Nomadland:  Two time Oscar winner Frances McDormand (Fargo/Three Billboards, three other nominations) is a no brainer possibility.

From #4 #5 Small Axe films Mangrove and Lover's Rock: Director Steve McQueen.  McQueen's feature list isn't lengthy but is impressive including 12 Years a Slave (for which he won an Oscar as a producer of the Best Picture winner), Widows, Hunger, Shame.  He's a definite consideration.

From #6 The French Dispatch:  Writer/Director Wes Anderson is the most obvious choice.  A lengthy  and well-loved resume' (including The Royal Tenenbaums, Moonrise Kingdom and The Grand Budapest Hotel) and seven time Oscar nominee makes that apparent.  But the cast is so large and diverse...you'd have a cornucopia of actor type possibilities: Saoirse Ronan (again), Frances McDormand (again), Elizabeth Moss, Edward Norton, Christoph Waltz, Willem Dafoe, Benicio Del Toro, Henry Winkler and, of course, Bill Murray (could he double up with the addition of Sofia Coppola's On the Rocks being programmed as well?)

From #7:  I think Pixar's Pete Docter (Up, Inside Out, Monster's Inc.) might be a possibility.  MTFB friend Christopher Schiller has suggested perhaps Pixar as an entity gets a tribute.  That sounds like a real possibility as well.

From the rest of the "Bets" and the other possibilities:

Undine director/writer Christian Petzold
Documentary producer/director Liz Garbus
Actress Michelle Pfeiffer from French Exit

SNIFFING OUT ANOTHER POSSIBLE

Poster for Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw's The Truffle Hunters (from IMDb)

As we await word from TFF organizers what the official TFF #47 lineup is/was I may have sniffed out another possibility.  Without going into details, because I can't, I respectfully offer the documentary The Truffle Hunters.

Had some things happen the last day or so that makes me think if could be on the TFF #47 list when it gets announced.  Yes, I know, it bowed at Sundance back in late January which is usually means a clear "no" for TFF as it wouldn't be a North American premiere.  But...that's a less stringent truth when it comes to docs as, over the years, TFF has programmed docs that had previously screened in the U.S. before screening at Telluride.

Working for the film's possible inclusion is that its distributor is Sony Pictures Classics which often has a substantial TFF profile.

The Truffle Hunters focuses on three elderly Italian men who, wait for it-hunt truffles.

The Truffle Hunters IMDb page is linked here.

The film won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance for World Cinema-Documentary.

WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN-CHICAGO 7 LOOKS

(from Vanity Fair)

Vanity Fair had a knockout exclusive first look at stills from Aaron Sorkin's The Trial of the Chicago 7.

Included in the accompanying article by David Ansen is the revelation that the film will drop on Netflix on Oct. 16th.  I've had this film circled as a TFF possibility since learning that it was going forward (first mention in MTFB that I can find is Dec. 2018).  The Oct. 16th date feels like what, in the olden times-like last year- would have been a plan to drop the film after completing a run tha could have included TFF, TIFF, Venice and/or NYFF.

Nevertheless, despite Netflix's determination that they wouldn't be festing at all this season, this is one of three films that I'm really, really looking forward to (in addition are Mank and The French Dispatch).

Glad I have that Netflix subscription.

The complete story and many other photos are here at Vanity Fair.

More Program Dedications from Past Fests / Best of the Decade / News from Cannes

Good Thursday film fans.

MORE PROGRAM DEDICATIONS FROM PAST FESTS

Spurred by the recent death of Agnes Varda and my speculation that we might find the 46th TFF program dedicated to her when we show up in the San Juans in late August, I began chronicling the people who have had past fests dedicated to them as far back as I can find them in the actual TFF programs.

In my last post I was able to list dedications for the last ten years of the festival (2009-2018).  Today that listing continues with a look at dedications from 1999-2008:

#35 2008- No dedication
#34 2007- Edward Yang and Ulrich Muhe
#33 2006- Jody Goodman
#32 2005- G. Cabrera Infante
#31 2004- Fay Wray
#30 2003- Stan Brakhage
#29 2002- Chuck Jones
#28 2001- Richard Farnsworth
#27 2000- John Berry
#26 1999- Albert Johnson

I'll have he next flight of program dedications in Monday's post.

BEST OF THE DECADE

I was recently asked to contribute to a survey of the best films of the decade (2010-2019).  So I have been pondering what might end up on my list.  I have been tasked with naming five films.  To that end, I have started the process by creating a list of 20 films to winnow down to the five.

As you might expect, the original list of 20 is heavy with films that played at Telluride but it's not exclusively TFF films.

Here's the working list at the moment listed chronologically by year:

2010- True Grit
2011- The Tree of Life, Shame, A Separation
2012- Lincoln, The Life of Pi
2013- 12 Years a Slave, Nebraska, Inside Llewyn Davis
2014- Birdman, Foxcatcher, The Grand Budapest Hotel
2015- Son of Saul, Spotlight, Mad Max: Fury Road
2016- Moonlight, La La Land
2017- Lady Bird, Dunkirk
2018- Roma

Of the 20 films seven of them are films the did not screen at Telluride.

Got to get it down to five...not going to be easy.

NEWS FROM CANNES

Ahead of next week's reveal of the bulk of titles that will play the Cannes Film Festival was the announcement this week that the venerable french film fest will open with the latest from Jim Jarmusch.  His film The Dead Don't Die will be the opening night film.  The film plays on Tuesday, May 14th to open the 72nd edition of Cannes.

The Dead Don't Die is described as a zombie comedy and stars Adam Driver, Bill Murray, Chloe Sevigny as well as Steve Buscemi and Tom Waits.

Jarmusch appears to have been involved with Telluride thrice in the past in 1984 with Stranger than Paradise; in 1989 with Mystery Train and in 1993 with Coffee and Cigarettes, the third short in the series was released that year.

The film has been off my Telluride radar for some time as it will open in the U.S. on June 14th.

I have linked the announcement news from Indiewire and the IMDb page for The Dead Don't Die is linked here.

That's your MTFB for this Thursday.  Come back on Monday for more.

Anticipated Films for This Fall and Telluride / More "Jobs" News / Could We See the Return of Bill Murray? / Late Breaking New "Macbeth" Trailer / Don't Forget to Rate

Good Tuesday World...the clock is ticking down.  TFF #42 in three days...

ANTICIPATED FILMS FOR THIS FALL AND TELLURIDE

As we count down the hours to the beginning of TFF #42, you might have noticed that everyone and her dog (or his) has, in the last week or so, posted their "Most Anticipated"...fall film list...or some version thereof. They're ubiquitous.

I've culled a number of them which are linked below if you'd like to gander at any or all of the complete lists.

What I've looked for is the inclusion of what I believe will be films that will be announced in about 48 hours as TFF players.  So here's the breakdown...(and "Steve Jobs" appears to be a film that a lot of people want to see...including your truly).

Variety/InContention (Welcome Back Kristopher Tapley!):

"Anomalisa", "Son of Saul", "Macbeth", "Steve Jobs", "45 Years", "Beasts of No Nation", "Room". "Spotlight", "Carol" and "Black Mass".

Indiewire:

"Rams", "Beasts of No Nation", "Anomalisa", "45 Years", "Amazing Grace", "He Named Me Malala" and "Taxi".

The Film Stage:

"Spotlight", "Suffragette", "Room", "Hitchcock/Truffaut", "Steve Jobs"and "Beasts of No Nation".

HitFix:

"Black Mass", "Steve Jobs", "Suffragette" and "Carol".

NewNowNext:

"Steve Jobs", "Suffragette", "Carol"

The Wrap:

"Black Mass", "Steve Jobs", "Spotlight" and "Carol"

Business Insider:

"Black Mass", "Steve Jobs", "Room", "Beasts of No Nation" and "Suffragette"

Awards Circuit:

"Anomalisa", "Beasts of No Nation", "Black Mass", "Carol", "Room", "Spotlight" and "Steve Jobs".

That's eight different lists and in this completely non-scientific survey, we find that "Steve Jobs" may be the most anticipated possible Telluride showing as it is mentioned on seven of the eight lists. Three films appear on five of the lists: "Carol", "Black Mass" and "Beasts of No Nation".  Three other films are on four of the lists: "Room", "Suffragette" and "Spotlight".

Assuming I have these correct, then you might anticipate that these could be the films with the hottest tickets going into this weekend.

MORE "JOBS" NEWS

Michael Fassbender as "Steve Jobs"

I thought I'd pass along a couple of "Steve Jobs" oriented stories form the last few days.  The first is from Time.com and is entitled "Five Things We Learned About the New Steve Jobs Movie" including the shocking revelation that lead Michael Fassbender doesn't much look like Steve Jobs.

Still, the article has some interesting things to say here:

http://time.com/4012107/steve-jobs-movie-aaron-sorkin-interview/

Also, I have linked another Jobs post from SlashFilm that includes some commentary on the film from Fassbender's co-star, Kate Winslet:

COULD WE SEE THE RETURN OF BILL MURRAY?

I asked via Twitter yesterday and somewhat rhetorically, if the recent appearance of a second trailer for Barry Levinson's "Rock the Kasbah" meant we might think about it as a Telluride possibility.

I'm only a little serious.  I've mentioned the film briefly in the run up to this year's fest and you could make a case for its inclusion.  Open Road is distributing and will almost certainly be on hand with "Spotlight",  They were a  noticeable presence in Telluride last year with "Rosewater".  Bill Murray was at TFF #39 with "Hyde Park on Hudson".  So, the notion isn't completely crazy.

Here's the trailer via YouTube:

And a couple of the stories that came with the trailer release are here:

http://www.indiewire.com/article/watch-bill-murray-gets-stranded-in-kabul-in-new-rock-the-kasbah-trailer-20150827

http://www.vulture.com/2015/08/bill-murray-goes-to-afghanistan-in-new-trailer.html

The film opens in the U.S. on Oct. 23.  Here's its IMDb profile:

AND LATE BREAKING THIS A.M....NEW TRAILER FOR MACBETH

New trailer for Justin Kurzel's "Macbeth" via YouTube

From The Playlist this morning (and The Weinstein Company, of course)

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/some-awesome-this-way-comes-watch-the-new-trailer-for-macbeth-starring-michael-fassbender-marion-cotillard-20150901

Could this still turn up this week in Colorado?  Less than a 50% chance in my view, but I have my fingers crossed.

DON'T FORGET TO RATE THE FILMS YOU SEE MY FRIENDS...

Rate the films this weekend 1-5 (1 being bad, 5 being way good) and send that info to me at one of the methods of contact below.  Be a part of "The People's Telluride".

Bad News on the "St. Vincent" and "Violent Year" Fronts/New Interstellar Trailer/More from France

Good Thursday to All...

BAD NEWS ON THE ST. VINCENT AND VIOLENT YEAR FRONTS

"St. Vincent" photo via yahoo.com

Deadline.com reported yesterday that a Toronto World Premiere Gala is all but a done deal for "St. Vincent" starring Bill Murray.  I have been holding out some hope that it and Murray would make the trip to Telluride but if the Mark Fleming, Jr. report is accurate...it looks unlikely now.

Read the story from Deadline.com here:

http://m.deadline.com/2014/07/mr-bill-murray-toronto-st-vincent-gala-but-cannot-find-you/

And speaking of bad news...there's some buzz that J.C. Chandor's "A Most Violent Year" which I was thinking was a pretty good Telluride bet (and I was hoping would make the trip as well) may not be ready in time for the festival.

Gotta say that I'm bummed if both of these films miss the fest.

NEW INTERSTELLAR TRAILER

Much was made of the reveal at Comic Con last week by Christopher Nolan of a new trailer for his "Interstellar".  The film remains a way way outside possibility for Telluride, although I've become all but convinced that it won't happen.  Nevertheless, the new trailer can be accessed at the official Interstellar website by typing in the access code 7201969...the date U.S. astronauts landed on the moon.  Here's the site:

http://www.interstellarmovie.com/

It's a cool trailer too.

MORE FROM FRANCE

I'm continuing to look at the French production houses that have had a Telluride Film Fest history and their current connections to films to attempt to uncover some of the other films that are possibles for a screening in the San Juans.

FRANCE 3 CINEMA

2003: Dogville, The Tripletts of Belleville
2004:
2005: Lemming, Live and Become, Cache
2006: The Page Turner, Indigenes
2007: The Diving Bell and The Butterfly, Persepolis
2008: I've Loved You So Long
2009: The White Ribbon
2010: The Illusionist, The Princess of Montpensier, Of Gods and Men
2011: The Artist
2012: Superstar, Amour
2013: The Past

Though France3 has had a larger profile than France2 at Telluride over the past few years, their pool of films this year seems thin with no one film standing out as a likely suspect.

Perhaps "Le Temps des Aveux" or, more likely "Caricaturistes, fantassins de la démocratie" the documentary about cartoonists and democracy that played at Cannes.

ARTE FRANCE CINEMA

Another Franco production outfit that has had persistent presence in Telluride is arte France Cinema.  Their track record looks like this:

2003: Dogville
2004: The Weeping Meadow
2005: The Child, Cache, Paradise Now
2006: Day Night Day Night
2008: O'Horten
2011: Le Havre, Goodbye First Love
2012: No films at Telluride
2013: Le Maison de la Radio, The Lunchbox

After no Telluride presence in 2012, arte France Cinema came back in 2013 fairly strong.  In 2014 their best chance at playing Telluride is the yet unannounced for any fall fest, Olivier Assayas' Cannes competition piece "Clouds of Sils Maria" starring Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart and Chloe Grace Moretz.

As we haven't seen it in Toronto's list yet, I am inching a little closer to thinking that it could actually play at Telluride and, perhaps a Juliette Binoche tribute?

CINECINEMA/CINE+

CineCinema changed over to Cine+ within the last three years or so but it's all the same.  This production company has often been represented at Telluride over the last few years:

2005: Lemming, Live and Become
2006: The Page Turner, Indigenes
2007: The Diving Bell and The Butterfly
2008: With a Little Help from Myself
2009: Farewell, Coco Before Chanel, A Prophet, Inferno
2010: The Illusionist, The Princess of Montpensier, Of Gods and Men
2011: Goodbye First Love, The Kid with a Bike, Le Havre, The Artist
2012: Rust and Bone, Superstar, The Attack, Amour
2013: The Past, Blue is the Warmest Color, Le Maison de la Radio

Cine+ has four projects that they're involved in that could well make the Telluride playlist:  "The Blue Room", "Bird People", "Two Days, One Night" and "Clouds of Sils Maria".

LATE BREAKING: RIP LOUIS ZAMPERINI/IFC Films and TFF #41/Teasers and Trailers/Could "The Tribe" Make Noise in Telluride/

LATE BREAKING: RIP LOUIS ZAMPERINI

Overnight we got reports that American hero, Olympian and the focus of the upcoming film "Unbroken" Louis Zamperini has died.  Zamperini was 97 and will has been something of a presence in the media these last few months as the P.R. machine began to crank up for the Angelina Jolie film.  I have linked the Awards Daily coverage of Zamperini's passing:

http://www.awardsdaily.com/blog/r-i-p-louis-zamperini-olympian-and-wwii-hero/

IFC FILMS AND TFF #41

IFC films has been a fairly substantial presence at Telluride over the past several years.  The firms highlight year probably was 2008 (the writer's strike year) when it was represented by 5 films.  IFC Films sometimes partners with Sundance Selects.

Here's the film record for IFC Films at Telluride for the past ten years:

2003: Touching the Void, Intermission
2004: Nobody Knows
2005: Three Times
2006: Deep Water, Indigenes
2007: Secret Sunshine, 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days, Jar City
2008: Hunger, Gomorrah, Flame and Citron, Everlasting Moments, The Good, the Bad and the Weird
2009: Fish Tank, Red Riding Trilogy, Life During Wartime, Vincere
2010: The Princess of Montpensier, Carlos
2011: Into the Abyss, Pina
2012: Frances Ha
2013: No Show

IFC Films averages 2.3 films per year at the Telluride Film Festival over the last decade. So...what's in the IFC pipeline that has Telluride implications?

The one that seems most likely is Olivier Assayas' "Clouds of Sils Maria" which also played Cannes.  After that there is also "Bird People", "The Salvation" and "Welcome to New York".  It seems to me that "The Salvation" might be the next most likely film but any of these four or none of them could make the T-ride lineup.

TEASERS AND TRAILERS

Two new view of films that might be in the mix for Telluride.  First, a new trailer for Bennett Miller's "Foxcatcher".  I just get more excited every time I see something new about the film.  Here's the trailer via YouTube:

And an accompanying story from The Dissolve:

Meanwhile, I'm warming to the idea that the latest Bill Murray flick could be in the T-ride mix.  "St. Vincent" stars Murray in full irresponsibility mode as an adult that develops a relationship with an adolescent.  It's in The Weinstein Company wheelhouse and could conceivably be a better shot at Oscar consideration than "Hyde Park on Hudson".  Additionally, I got the feeling that Murray really enjoyed his Telluride visit with "Hyde Park" two years ago.  Here's that trailer also from YouTube:

And, again, an accompanying story from The Dissolve:

COULD "THE TRIBE" MAKE NOISE IN TELLURIDE?

Alex Billington of FirstShowing.net reports that Drafthouse Films has acquired U.S. distribution for "The Tribe".  The film is told completely with sign language and without subtitles and was quite the buzz producer at Cannes in May.

Drafthouse was represented at Telluride in 2012 with Joshua Oppenheimer's "The Act of Killing"...By the way, I fully expect Oppenhiemer's sequel to screen at TFF #41, "The Look of Silence".

Here's the link to the Billington post that includes a slightly NSFW trailer:

More tomorrow, including this week's "Ten Bets".

BEST ACTOR

Nobody disputes that Telluride has been a springboard to winning the Best Actor Oscar of late.  Ask Daniel Day Lewis, Forest Whitaker, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Colin Firth and Jean Dujardin.  So when Rope of Silicon's Bred Brevet lists Best Actor candidates you have to think that those names could provide some clues about possible Telluride #39 films.  Take a look at the ROS post here:
http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/early-list-of-2013-best-actor-oscar-contenders-day-lewis-murray-jackman-and-more/

Of particular note, in as far as TFF #39 might be concerned are: Bill Murray, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robert Pattinson and Terrence Stamp.

That'll do for a Monday...later...
