Mr. Mike's Wish List/Lupita and Brad: Round Two/Selena's Rudderless Fans Find MTFB

Good Monday Everyone.  Hope you had a great weekend.

MR. MIKE'S WISH LIST

The first stab at a "Ten Bets" list is still almost two weeks away but that doesn't mean I don't have films that I'm wishing for,  Some of them have a decent shot to make the lineup; others are "pie in the sky"...but even"pie in the sky" sometimes comes true.

Here's where I am right now:

Wish List A: (films that have a reasonable chance to be at Telluride): "Foxcatcher", "The Imitation Game", "Birdman", "Two Days, One Night".

Wish List B: (films that I'd love to see at Telluride, but chances are minuscule): "Interstellar", "Inherent Vice", "MacBeth", "Unbroken".

There will be others...What's on your wish list?

LUPITA AND BRAD: ROUND TWO

News appeared over the weekend that "12 Years a Slave" Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o has put together the pieces to produce her next project.  Striking while she is a hot commodity and taking advantage of the relationships developed during her "12 Years" experience, IndieWire reports that she will star and produce an adaptation of "Americanah".  She'll do it with the participation of Brad Pitt's Plan B Production Company which was also instrumental in the development of "12 Years".  a 2015 release date is anticipated.  So mark it down as a possible "Coming Attraction" for TFF #42.

Take a look at the complete IndieWire story here:

SELENA'S FANS FIND MTFB

It took nearly a week but Selena Gomez fans found Michael's Telluride Film Blog this past weekend as a result of the tweets I tweeted after catching the private OKC screening of William H. Macy's "Rudderless". Gomez fans starting retweeting like crazy yesterday and naturally, I encouraged them to drop be and look at the rather extensive "Rudderless" reporting that's contained here.  Thanks Selena fans.  Hope you enjoy all the "Rudderless" coverage.  I'll say it again for your benefit...she's really good in the film!

Saturday Special: More Oscar Final Predix/Another "Only in Telluride" Moment

Good Saturday Everyone.

Here's a quick special edition of The FAC with links to more final predictions from Oscarologists as we move into the final hours before the envelopes are unsealed.

MORE OSCAR FINAL PREDIX

Brad Brevet at Rope of Silicon says "12 Years" wins Best Picture.  Take a look at all of his picks here:

http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/final-2014-oscar-predictions-user-polls/

IndieWire has compiled the choices of over 60 critics and bloggers to produce their version of The FAC/Gurus etc.  Here's a link to that:

http://www.indiewire.com/article/oscars-poll-who-will-win-and-who-should-win-according-to-over-60-critics-and-bloggers

Over at Gold Derby they've posted a story about the Best Picture race and a podcast featuring Tom O'Neil and Tariq Khan.   Those can be seen here:

http://www.goldderby.com/news/5766/oscars-predictions-entertainment-news-852749631.html

http://www.goldderby.com/news/5773/oscars-predictions-predict-entertainment-news-856317249.html

And...late breaking...word is that Hollywood Reporter expert Scott Feinberg is about to change one of his major category predictions.  Feinberg's track record is pretty good so a switch from him at this late date should be taken very seriously.

Of course, I don't know how Scott defines "major category" but, seriously, what could it be?  Feinberg's picks for the Big Eight Categories as posted earlier this week were:

Adapted Screenplay: "12 Years"
Original Screenplay: "American Hustle"
Supporting Actress: Jennnifer Lawrence
Supporting Actor: Jared Leto
Actress: Cate Blanchett
Actor: Matthew McConaughey
Director: Alfonso Cuaron
Picture: "12 Years a Slave"

So...pretty sure he won't be changing Leto, Blanchett, McConaughey or Cuaron.  I could see a change in either screenplay category, Best Supporting Actress and Best Picture...stay tuned.

UPDATE:  Feinberg changes Supporting Actress pick from Lawrence to Nyong'o:

ANOTHER "ONLY IN TELLURIDE" MOMENT

I always have a lot of fun after each year's Telluride is over coming back home to the real world and having anecdotes to share about the films I saw and the people that were there.  Then I caught this last  night on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon"...Kind of gave me goosebumps as I'm pretty sure I had to be nearby when the event that Ralph Fiennes describes occurred.  Sure, this kind of thing probably happens all the time in that world...but it's still rare in mine. The relevant segment starts at 1:08 into the clip. Take a look:

I hope Lupita wins tomorrow night...

More later including the Feinberg switch...

Rudderless Rising/Cuaron Wins the DGA/Lupita Interview/TFF #41 and J.C. Chandor?/Making it in the Big Leagues

Welcome to Monday!

RUDDERLESS RISING

Standing ovation for William H. Macy's "Rudderless" at The Sundance Film Festival this past weekend.

Sundance's closing premiere, "Rudderless" premiered for Sundance audiences Friday night to a standing ovation.  The film was screened a second time on Sunday morning...also a standing ovation.  I have read half a dozen reviews of the film and five of the six range from good to ecstatic.  Variety is the one review that wasn't impressed with the film written by Casey Twenter and Jeff Robison and shot in Oklahoma last spring.

I am including links to reviews from The Hollywood Reporter, /Film, HitFix, The Playlist and WeLiveFilm:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/rudderless-sundance-review-674066

http://www.slashfilm.com/william-h-macys-directorial-debut-rudderless-is-a-tale-of-two-half-notes-sundance-14-review/

http://welivefilm.com/sundance-2014-rudderless-review-moviemanmenzel/

There are plenty of blurb-worthy quotes to chose from and that you can expect to see in future marketing for the film.  As to The Variety review, I'm an unrepentant fan of the film...so you can google it yourself if you want to read it.

If you have seen other reviews of the film, please drop me a note via the comments and I'll post those as well.

In other Sundance news, the biggest prize winner in the competition section was for "Whiplash" which opened the festival.  The film stars Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons and was written and directed by Damien Chazelle and focuses on the world of music...in this case drumming.  "Whiplash" won the top dramatic prize and the audience award both on Saturday night.

CUARON WINS THE DGA

Also on Saturday night...late Saturday night, the Directors Guild of America named Alfonso Cuaron the best feature film director of the year for "Gravity".  That solidifies the thinking that he will likely win the Oscar for the same feat and also boosts the chance that "Gravity" wins Best Picture on Oscar night.

It will be interesting to see how much the DGA win moves the tone of the Oscar pundits.  Over the last week the very strong popular narrative has been that "12 Years a Slave" would win Best Picture and tat Cuaron would win Best Director.  After the PGA tie between the two films last week, there was also a lot of discussion about what effect the DGA winner might have.

Though a split between Best Picture and Best Director is rare, it does happen.  It happened last year when Ang Lee won directing for "Life of Pi" and "Argo" won Best Picture.

Lost i the shuffle, at least a little bit over the past week has been "American Hustle" which looked like a house on fire after the SAG and Golden Globes and also after nomination morning when it co-lead the field (along with "Gravity") with 10 nominations.  I personally don't think you can completely write off its chances of winning Best Picture as it seems to have a lot of love from actors and that's the largest branch, by far, of the Academy's membership.

I also have to say that a real left field surprise could happen too.  I can see these three top films splitting #1 votes enough to allow a "compromise" candidate to emerge victorious.  Some of the Oscar elite think that could be "Philomena".  My "surprise" winner is "Dallas Buyers Club".  It's likely winning at least statues on Oscar night for Best Actor and Supporting Actor (McConaughey and Leto).  In addition to Best Picture, it has two other important nominations: Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing.  It also has a nomination for Makeup/Hair.  It also appears to be adored by the actors.  I'm telling you that if had scored a Best Direction nomination, it would be a serious part of the conversation.

The other "surprise" possibility: Alexander Payne's "Nebraska".  It even has a Best Directing nomination.  It's weakness is that it will likely not win a single Oscar that it's nominated for.  In addition to Best Picture and Direction; it's nominated for Actor (Bruce Dern), Supporting Actress (June Squibb), Original Screenplay and Cinematography.  I think that had it picked up an Editing nomination, it might be a bigger topic of conversation as well.

Bottom line...I'm still of a mind that "12 Years" wins Best Picture but I have to accede to the dominant thinking at this point.   Up until Saturday night, I had still thought that Steve McQueen would win Best Director come Oscar night (and that could still happen...DGA and Oscar don't always agree on Direction) but too much points to Cuaron winning Best Director.  It seems the split is likely or even that "Gravity" may have a near "Titanic"/"Lord of the Rings; Return of the King" type night.

LUPITA INTERVIEW

Oscar nominated for "12 Years a Slave" (and perhaps a slight front runner), Lupita N'yong'o, spoke recently to The Carpetbagger/The New York Times.  Here's that interview:

http://carpetbagger.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/01/23/video-lupita-nyongo/

TFF #41 AND J.C. CHANDOR?

A24 films have acquired the rights to writer/director J.C. Chandor's third feature: "A Most Violent Year". The film stars Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain.  I think it has a real chance to play at Telluirde #41 this Labor Day.  Reasons:  I spoke briefly last to both Chandor and Isaac at last year's festival, and both men seem to be having a great time.  Additionally, A24 has emerged as an occasional presence at Telluride with films playing as a part of the program in 2012 with "Ginger and Rosa' and last year with "Under the Skin".

Biggest reason that it might not play TFF #41...it hasn't started shooting yet.

MAKING IT IN THE BIG LEAGUES

This is completely unnecessary, but...

As you might expect, The Telluride Film Festival has official photographers and videographers.  I have to admit that I've always hoped that somehow, Kris and I might find ourselves in one of their shots someday.   You know, sort of as tangible proof to the rest of the world (and maybe even to ourselves) that we were actually there. The Fest puts out an annual Yearbook, there are certainly a ton of pictures from the fest as it's going on but it's never happened.  Until this year.

I was perusing the Fest's website recently and trolling through the official photos when I found this one from the Patron's Brunch:

Ostensibly this is a photo of past Guest directors Michal Ondaatje (author of "The English Patient") and Salman Rushdie author of "The Satanic Verses").  If you look at the background, to the left of Rushdie, you can see me standing (dressed in blue)  and looking out over the crowd.  Kris is blocked by the very nice woman in the salmon shirt (not Salman-ha!).  She's the artist who makes the medallions each years for the tributees.

Yes, that's really me behind Ondaatje and Rushdie...and I'm looking at a crowd that included Robert Redford, Francis Ford Coppola, Bruce Dern, The Coen Brothers, T.Bone Burnett and others.

Objective photographic evidence my friends...I guess it really did happen.

Inside Llewyn News/12 Years Honored/Nebraska and the AFI

Good Thursday to Everyone...

INSIDE LLEWYN NEWS

The Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis" mad a big splash this past week with its unveiling as a part of The New York Film Festival.  The highlight may have been the benefit concert that happened on Sunday night.

Many of the musicians (Marcus Mumford, The Punch Brothers) and actors (Oscar Issac, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman) that are a part of the soundtrack were a part of the show.  The concert also included appearances from musical stars of the early-60's era that the film portrays including Joan Baez.

The film is scheduled for release on Dec. 20.

Anne Thompson of Thompson on Hollywood reveals the man behind Llewyn Davis: actor Oscar Issac.

http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/oscar-isaac-talks-acting-and-guitar-picking-for-the-coens-inside-llewyn-davis

Issac is making some noise concerning the Best Actor race but the category is loaded with possible contenders this year.  Alex Billington of FirstShowing.net addresses that issue:

http://www.firstshowing.net/2013/where-do-oscar-isaac-inside-llewyn-davis-fit-into-the-oscar-race/

The "Another Day, Another Time" concert featuring the music that inspired the film as well as music from the film itself was a big hit last weekend.  I have linked stories from Variety and The Playlist:

12 YEARS A SLAVE HONORED

The announcement came earlier this week that director Steve McQueen and actress Lupita Nyong'o will be feted as a part of the Hollywood Film Awards for their work on "12 Years a Slave".  The film's profile has increased steadily since its premiere at Telluride and is aimed at a New York Film Festival screening within the week.  The Grio and The Hollywood Reporter both filed stories about the HFA that will include McQueen and Nyong'o:

NEBARSKA AND THE AFI

Alexander Payne's "Nebraska" was one of three films named this week as centerpieces for the American Film Institutes's Film Fest.  The other films announced were Ben Stiller's "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and Scott Cooper's "Out of the Furnace".  At least one of the films were likely added as a replacement for Bennett Miller's "Foxcatcher" which has now been pushed to a 2014 release. AFI also announced that Bruce Dern will be honored as a part of the festival as well.  HitFix has the story here:

Coming Attractions/Foreign News/Cuaron and Gravity/Nyong'o Long Ago...well, Two Years.

Good Monday All...

COMING ATTRACTIONS...

Keeping last week's promise, here's the first of what will likely be several entries regarding films that are floating around various stages of genesis/production that have at least some potential to play as a part of some future Telluride Film Festival.  Since teasing the notion that I keep this file last week, I have added information about this week's announcements that Jennifer Lawrence will be in Gary Ross's new version/adaptation of John Steinbeck's classic "East of Eden".  Look at a couple of posts about that tantalizing prospect here from The Playlist and The Hollywood Reporter:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/jennifer-lawrence-gary-ross-reteam-for-2-part-east-of-eden-burial-rites-20130925

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/jennifer-lawrence-gary-ross-reteam-636585

This project isn't really a film that immediately says: "Telluride" but I'm personally intrigued by the thought of it.  I think it would be interesting to see this pair away from "The Hunger Games" and what Ross might do. I'm an admirer of both "Seabiscuit" and "Pleasantville".  I like J. Law too.

On a more conventional prospect for Telluride, of the ten or so films I mentioned in last week's post about potential T-ride projects, none has a greater likelihood of playing than Werner Herzog's "Queen of the Desert".  Over the past few months I have collected numerous posts about its development (from The Playlist and Empireonline.com):

FOREIGN NEWS

A lot of movement occurred this week in regards to the Foreign Language Oscar as the Oct. 1 deadline for submission looms.  Iran officially is back in the FLF race as they chose Asghar Farhadi's "The Past" and Israel chose "Bethlehem" as their entry.  Poland has "Ida" all of which played Telluride this year.  Links below to stories on each of the three films:

CUARON AND GRAVITY

Alfonso Cuaron continues to generate astounding critical response and buzz as it nears its release date this weekend.  The director talked recently to Kris Tapley of HitFix/InContention about the film and other matters.  You can see that here:

NYONG'O LONG AGO

Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave" has a lot going for it and has been received rapturously at both Telluride and Toronto and is soon to be bow at the New York Film Fest (Oct. 8).  One of its surprises is the emergence of Lupita Nyong'o in the role of a young woman who has captured the fancy of the evil plantation owner played by Michael Fassbender.  Nyong'o is very new to American audiences but does have some credits on her resume.  Among them: soap opera work in her native Kenya.  Take a look at this CNN video in which the young actress talks about her early career:

Telluride Day Two/Day Three TBAs and Sneaks

Telluride Day Two…

This is the eighth SHOW I’ve attended and I’ve had some wondrous experiences but Friday might take the cake.

I began the day with the tribute to Robert Redford which was wonderful.  An hour or so of clips which reminded me of so much great work that Redford has done and also made me want to re-watch some of my personal favorites: “All the President’s Men”, “A River Runs Through It” which he narrated and directed, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”…many others.  The clip reel was followed by an entertaining Q&A led by John Horn of the Los Angeles Times.

Robert Redford

Following the tribute, I caught Penn and Teller’s documentary “Tim’s Vermeer”.  The film focuses on Texas inventor Tim Jenison and his search for a way to replicate the complex painting style of Johannes Vermeer.  Sounds pretty dull, but nope.  In fact, it’s the second most enthusiastic reception for a film I’ve seen this weekend.  Penn Jillette produced; Teller directed a film that ends up with an audience rooting for Tim to be successful.  The emotion was no doubt heightened by the presence of Mr. Jenison in the theater.

Then I caught J.C. Chador’s sophomore effort, the highly anticipated “All is Lost” starring Redford.  Redford plays “Our Man” a nameless guy who is sailing solo in the Indian Ocean.  Things go awry and quickly spiral out of control.  Soon “Our Man” is in desperate straits and all alone.  The man vs. the elements story is tight.  I wrote via Twitter “All is Lost” is simple, spare, beautifully shot and Redford acts his ass off”.   It really may be the legend’s finest film performance…and with almost no dialogue.

Brad Pitt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lupita Nyong'o and Michael Fassbender

I ended the day with sneak preview showing of Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave”.  McQueen as well as stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Lupita Nyong’o and star/producer Brad Pitt were in attendance.  The film is incredible.  Following the film there came a standing ovation for the director and cast as they took the stage for a brief Q&A.  Reactions from across the board Friday night were effusive in praise for McQueen, the cast, John Ridley’s screenplay.  I tweeted “The Oscar race might be over.  Ejiofor, Fassbender and Nyong’o shine.  McQueen is genius.”

Other comments: Jeff Wells/Hollywood Elsewhere called it “Masterful, tender and eloquent”.  Eric Kohn/IndieWire called it “maybe the best movie about slavery ever”.  Alex Billington/FirstShowing said, “A profound cinematic achievement on every level”.  Greg Ellwood/HitFix said, “Powerful…a stunning turn by Chiwetel Ejiofor”.

There are a number of mentions of probable Oscar nominations.  You have to think McQueen, Ridley, Ejiofor, Fassbender, Nyong’o and, of course Best Picture.  Also score, costumes seem likely to me at least.

My final analysis of “12 Years a Slave”…transcendent film making that seems to me to be in a class with “Schindler’s List”.

Day Three will include the Coen Brothers tribute and Ralph Fiennes “The Invisible Woman” and more.

More from Telluride tomorrow.

SATURDAY TBAs and SNEAKS

Prisoners                  Palm/Sat 8:30a

A father (Hugh Jackman) goes ballistic trying to punish the suspected abductor (Paul Dano) of his daughter and another girl, while running afoul of the diligent cop (Jake Gyllenhaal) working the case. Sounds like countless hours of TV procedural-cop dramas? Nope. Director Denis Villeneuve (INCENDIES, TFF 2010), working from Aron Guzikowski’s fiendishly inventive script, reaches Dostoyevskian depths, creating a terrifying, morally ambiguous universe where ordinary human decency faces the harshest of tests. The superb supporting cast includes Terrence Howard, Viola Davis, and Melissa Leo. It may surprise you that Hollywood genre moves can still be this good. (U.S., 2013, 158m) In person: Denis Villeneuve

Prisoners Q&A                 Palm/Sat 8p

12 Years a Slave           Chuck Jones Cinema/Sat 8p

Solomon Northrup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), an impeccable middle-class attorney with a happy family and superb skills as a violinist, is an African American free from birth who has never spent a moment of his life confronting the horrors of black experience down South. Pursuing a business opportunity in Washington, DC, he is kidnapped and enslaved, and descends into a harrowing nightmare of moral corruption and irrational violence. Director Steve McQueen (HUNGER, SHAME) and screenwriter John Ridley shape Northrup’s memoir into a vivid, compelling historical fresco, with superb performances from Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, in his third collaboration with McQueen, Lupita Nyong'o, Paul Dano, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti and Brad Pitt.
