IS THIS THING ON? A TELLURIDE POSSIBILITY

Jordan Ruimy at World of Reel reports that Bradley Cooper's next directorial effort, Is This Thing On? has wrapped production and:

"Searchlight is reportedly “really liking what they’ve seen so far,” and they’re planning a fall 2025 release. The movie is expected to make the rounds at fall festivals, including TIFF and Telluride."

Theis is the IMDb description for the film:

"A couple's marriage crumbles as they pursue separate paths - he explores stand-up comedy in NYC while she rediscovers herself. Together, they learn to redefine their relationship and family dynamics amid major life changes."

The film stars Cooper as well as Will Arnett (who co-wrote) and Laura Dern.  No release date has been offiically announced.

MEGADOC AT T-RIDE?

World of Reel also reports that Mike Figgis' documentary about the making of Francis Ford Copplola's Megalopolis, MegaDoc may also be in play for TFF#52.  In his story from yesterday he quotes Figgis as saying:

"Last month, “MegaDoc” was privately screened in London for “friends” and “family,” and the event included a post-screening Q&A with Figgis, conducted by filmmaker Gareth Evans (“The Raid”). In case you’re wondering, Figgis says that he aims to officially premiere the film at “Venice or Telluride.”

POSTERS FOR ONE BATTLE AFTER THE OTHER

This week saw the release of posters for Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After the Other.  Up until last week this news wouldn't have likely made it into the Blog but with the release date being moved to Sept. 26th, well, a guy can dream, can't he?

Here's a couple:

Good Monday friends...It's a Monday.  Here's some stuff about the Telluride Film Festival...maybe.

DIRECTOR'S FORTNIGHT FILMS ANNOUNCED FOR CANNES

Official selections for the Cannes Film Festival's Director's Fortnight were announced Thursday. The DF section sometimes provides a film or two that make their way to Colorado for Labor Day,  Last year Pablo Larrain's Neruda was selected for the DF section and then made the trip.

This year's announced films don't seem to provide a film title that immediately leaps out as a Telluride suspect.  Here are the films announced:

“Un Beau Soleil Interieur,” directed by Claire Denis (Opening Night Film)
“A Ciambra,” directed by Jonas Carpignano
“Bushwick,” directed by Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott
“Patti Cake$,” directed by Geremy Jasper
“Alive in France,” directed by Abel Ferrara
“L’amant d’un Jour,” directed by Philippe Garrel
“Curio Puri,” directed by Roberto De Paolis
“The Florida Project,” directed by Sean Baker
“Frost,” directed by Sharunas Bartas
“I Am Not a Witch,” directed by Rungano Nyoni
“Jeannette: The Childhood of Joan of Arc,” directed by Bruno Dumont
“L’intrust,” directed by Leonardo Di Costanzo
“La Defensa del Dragon,” directed by Natalia Santa
“Marlina Si Pembunuh Dalam Empat Babak,” directed by Mouly Surya
“Mobile Homes,” directed by Vladimir de Fontenay
“Nothingwood,” directed by Sonia Kronlund
“Ôtez-moi d’un Doute,” directed by Carine Tardieu
“The Rider,” directed by Chloé Zhao
“West of the Jordan River (Field Diary Revisited),” directed by Amos Gitai
Short Films:
“Ague Mole,” directed by Laura Goncalves and Alexandra Ramires
“La Bouche,” directed by Camilo Restrepo
“Copa-Loca,” directed by Christos Massalas
"Creme de Menthe,” directed by David Philippe Gagné and Jean-Marc E. Roy
“Farpões, Baldios,” directed by Marta Mateus
“Min Borda,” directed by Niki Lindroth von Bahr
“Nada,” directed by Gabriel Martins
“Detour a Genoa City,” directed by Benoit Grimalt
“Tijuana Tales,” directed by Jean-Charles Hue
“Tresnje,” directed by Dubravka Turic

You can find some of the coverage for the Director's Fortnight selections here at the official site as well as here from Indiewire and here from Hollywood Elsewhere.

ISMAEL'S GHOSTS AND THE B SIDE

We got a look this past week at new trailers for the Cannes opening night film, Ismael's Ghosts from director Arnuad Desplechin, as well as for Errol Morris' The B-Side: Elsa Dorfman's Portrait Photography.  The B-Side was a part of the TFF 43 program last fall.

Desplechin's film features past Telluride tribute recipient Marion Cotillard as well as Mathieu Almaric and Charlotte Gainsbourg in a story of a film makers life sent into chaos when a former lover returns to his life.

Here's the trailer from YouTube:

In addition, here is linked coverage for the trailer from:

Ismael's Ghosts is a rare Cannes opening night film that could make its way to TFF #44.

Meanwhile, the trailer for the new Errol Morris doc that focuses on the photography of Elsa Dorfman was also released at the end of the week.  It's scheduled to open on June 2.

Here is that trailer also via YouTube:

And additional material about the trailer and film can be found at The Playlist.

Thanks for reading.  I'll have more on Thursday.

Parsing Cannes' Director's Fortnight / Calling All Film Makers / Awards Daily Talks Telluride

Good Thursday everyone.  Cannes starts in three weeks...

PARSING CANNES ' DIRECTOR'S FORTNIGHT

The last major segment of films for the 69th Cannes Film Fest was announced earlier this week as the fest announced films selected for its Director's Fortnight program.  The films that seemed to have the most initial Telluride potential (based on past T-ride selections) would seem to be:

Paul Schrader's Dog Eat Dog
Pablo Larrain's Neruda and
Alejandro Jodorowsky's Endless Poetry

I have linked coverage of the Director's Fortnight announcement from Indiewire here:

Meanwhile, I missed this last week.  Director Eran Korilin, who appeared at Telluride in 2007 with The Band's Visit has new film in the Un Certain Regard section, which, because of the reception Band's Visit received nine years ago, must be considered a serious SHOW prospect.  The film is titled Beyond the Mountains and the Hills.

CALLING ALL FILM MAKERS

The word went out earlier this week...The Telluride Film Festival has opened its film submission period.  Here's the text of the announcement:

BERKELEY, CA – Telluride Film Festival (September 2-5, 2016), presented by National Film Preserve, Ltd. announces its Call for Entries in all categories including student, short and feature length films.
Submission period begins April 15, 2016. Film Entry Form is available on the TFF website: www.telluridefilmfestival.org.
Shorts and student film submissions must be received no later than 5:00 PM, July 1, 2016. Feature film submissions must be received no later than 5:00 PM, July 15, 2016. All submissions must have been completed after July 15, 2015 and no works in progress will be accepted. Feature-length films (60 minutes or longer) will only be considered if they are to have their first North American screening at Telluride Film Festival. Final program determinations will be made by August 1, 2016. No early or late entries will be accepted.
Professional and amateur filmmakers working in all aesthetic disciplines and genres including narrative, documentary, animation and experimental are welcome.
Each year Telluride Film Festival plays host to an average of 25 feature films and 25 shorts and student films. Films selected to screen at Telluride Film Festival will be shown out-of-competition. TFF is not a competitive festival.
 For more information visit www.telluridefilmfestival.org

So...hey...If you've got a film ready...here's your invitation.

AWARDS DAILY TALKS TELLURIDE (AND SOME OTHER FILM FESTS)

Awards Daily's Sasha Stone posted a detailed piece yesterday focusing on four film fests and their Oscar footprint: Telluride, Cannes, Venice and Toronto.  It's interesting and says a number of the same things that I write in this space from time to time.  Take a look:

That's a wrap for Thursday.  More to come on Monday...have a great weekend.

Good Morning!

MORE CANNES ANNOUNCEMENTS

Cannes Jury

The jury for the 65th Cannes Film Festival has been named and includes some familiar faces not the least of which is recent Telluride regular and recent Oscar winner Alexander Payne.  Payne's presence again underscores the web of connections between the French fest and the one that takes place in Colorado on Labor Day.

Here from HitFix is the entire Cannes competition jury:

Critic's Week and Director's Fortnight:

The lineup for these special portions of the Cannes program were also announced this week.  The Daily Mubi has the Critic's Week lineup here:

Other  films in and looking

There's some buzz that a Sean Penn film may still be announced as a part of the Cannes lineup.  That stems from a purported tweet from Cannes head man Thierry Fremaux.  That story is here from The Playlist:
