Sneak Preview Details:

AFTERSUN

In Charlotte Wells’ lovely, observant first feature, Sophie, a woman in her 30s, reflects on a trip taken with her father Calum (Paul Mescal) 20 years earlier. Through home movies and her own memories (reliable and otherwise), Sophie tries to reconcile her various impressions of Calum, coming to terms with the father she knew and the man she didn't. Winner, Cannes Film Festival. (U.S./U.K., 2022, 96m)

In person: Charlotte Wells, Paul Mescal, Barry Jenkins (executive producer)

ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED

This epic documentary by Oscar-winning director Laura Poitras (CITIZENFOUR) follows the tireless, deeply personal battle by the renowned artist Nan Goldin as she uses her work to hold the Sackler family—architects of the opioid crisis—responsible for their crimes. Through her group P.A.I.N., Goldin shares the losses in her own life, reveals the exploitative tactics of the Sacklers’ Purdue Pharma, and shames museums into rejecting the Sacklers’ dirty money. A reminder of art’s power to fight for what’s right. (U.S., 2022, 113m)

COUPLE OF NOTES

Saw Armageddon Time, Living and Serge Bromberg's World Premiere of Georges Meiles films in 3D.   All were good to great experiences.

Liked Armageddon Time...Anthony Hopkins seems to be consuming most of acting oxygen here but I'm putting in a strong word for Jeremy Strong.  His performance, for my $ is best of show here.

Loved Living and thought I would.  Bill Nighy doing a remake of Kurosawa's classic (and what was purportedly the Masters favorite from within his own canon).  Loved it and Bill and the structure of the piece.  Hats off to director Oliver Hermanus and writer Kazuo Ishiguro.

And then Serge Bromberg and restored silents including the exciting and magical premiere of a couple of Georges Meiles films IN 3D!  Also didn't hurt that we got to sit next Leonard and Alice Maltin.  A more lovely group of people and film magic history.

Was also nice to run into Matt Neglia of Next Best Picture and Clayton Davis of Variety.  Both gentlemen who have been quite kind to me over the last two-three years.

AND....I have been bowled over by how many of you readers have been kind enough to tell me that you read and enjoy the blog.  It is truly humbling and overwhelming.  Thank you so much for kind words these past few days.  They mean everything.

SUNDAY FOR ME

We created a slow-paced day that had us at the third screening of Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog with Q+A afterwards led by John Horn and featuring Campion, Benedict Cumberbatch, Korsten Dunst and Kodi Smit-McPhee.  We followed that with a look at Land of Gold from director Jon Else and featuring T-ride favorite Peter Sellars.

It was a glorious day.

Campion's The Power of the Dog is likely to be regarded as her masterwork.  It's truly a wonderful piece of film making.  Kudos Kudos to the troupe of Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee.  Their work is stellar.  Also props to Johnny Greenwood's score.

As to Land of Gold...Peter Sellars is an American Treasure.  Tell him I said so when/if you see him.

MY MONDAY

Short and sweet. I'm going to try to catch King Richard at 9:00 am at The Chuck and then head to the picnic.  Say hello if you run into me.

After the ice cream, I'm headed back to the Oklahoma Panhandle so I can be in my classroom on Tuesday morning.

I gotta say, I loved being back in Telluride for this Fest!!!

Day Three Done...Day Four: TBAs / And Departure / The People's Telluride

DAY THREE DONE ...

Saw both Motherless Brooklyn and Marriage Story as well as catching part of the Netflix Documentary Brunch...shout out to Gary Shapiro who I met and is a funny, warm individual.

MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN...

Edward Norton's dream project is realized and generally well executed.  Minor quibbles with length and pacing.  Production design is gorgeous.  Acting...Norton is the standout.  Alec Baldwin also quite good.

MARRIAGE STORY

For my money the best of the fest so far (and I admit that I haven't caught Ford v. Ferrari or Two Popes both of which are generating great buzz in Telluride lines).  Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver are ridiculously good as the couple whose marriage has disintegrated.  Laura Dern also makes waves in a flashy performance but let me get a word in for Julie Hagerty as Johansson's mother.

Re-Post Sunday Done Day / Monday TBAs / Remember The People's Telluride

SUNDAY DONE DAY

Really great day at TFF #45 on Sunday.

Jason Reitman and Hugh Jackman at The Front Runner Q and A

Started the day with Jason Reitman's The Front Runner which moves to the #2 spot for the weekend.  I loved it.  Hits all my politics geek buttons and history and film making.  Hugh Jackman as Gary Hart, Vera Farmiga as his wife Lee and J.K. Simmons as campaign manager Bill Dixon are all in fine form.  Reitman is back, my friends!

Then did the Netflix Doc brunch which was lovely and also allowed me to grab Front Runner co-screen-writer Jay Carson as well as Reitman and express my enthusiasm for their film.

Then Joel Edgerton's Boy Erased.  SUbtle and understated with a subject (gay conversion therapy) that could easily have provided any number of histrionics.  Praise to Edgerton and his cast of Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Edgerton himself.  Beautifully realized and emotionally honest.

Matthew McConnaughey during The White Boy Rick Q and A

The day ended with White Boy Rick which is an entertaining film featuring nice work from Matthew McConaughey and non-actor Richie Merritt...who is fantastic as WBR.  McConnaughey in greta form in the Q and A that followed.

THOUGHTS ON SUNDAY'S SCREENINGS

Guillermo Del Toro moved his  Q and A outdoors Sunday morning to extend its length.

The Shape of Water- Del Toro's images are breath taking.  I know a lot of the town is talking about this film tonight and they should be.  Personally, my reaction seems to be more muted than most.  I talked to a very experienced reviewer today for a good long while and he loved it. Heaps of praise to Sally Hawkins, Richard Jenkins.  I hope this man is in the convo for Supporting actor-great work here.

Battle of the Sexes- Played very, very well to the house.  I found myself reacting to the shots in the game/climax...even knowing the outcome.  Emma Stone and Steve Carell are in fine form.

Loving Vincent- Gorgeous as expected.  Script is relatively staid and that gets in the way.  Still, the process is mind-blowing.

RATE THE FILMS PEOPLE

As I finish this up late Sunday night it seems to me that the films earning the most buzz have been: Darkest Hour, Lady Bird, The Shape of Water, Battle of the Sexes and Hostiles.  I can't wait to see how the pros and the peeps respond.  So rate the films you saw on a 0-5 scale and send them to me.  You can do so using any of the contact methods listed below.

TOMORROW'S PLAN

Looks like I am probably at The Galaxy at 9:00 for Hostiles.  Then a quick visit to the picnic and likely closing TFF #44 after catching The Rider at 1:00 at the Opera House.  Then we'll almost certainly hit the road for home.

Say hello if you see me.

It is a film like no other you have seen. Made in violation of every rule of film production, Paolo Cherchi Usai’s second feature is a movie-in-denial, a film that tests—protests—its own identity as a film. The canned theatre; a dream factory; a work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction—intuitions like these have been thrown at the film medium since birth. The Tin Man has no heart, generations of wizards have been telling us. PICTURE was made as if its director had been blissfully unaware of their curse. (U.S., 2015, 68m)

SUNDAY'S COMMENTARY

Sunday's films were:

Jafar Panahi's "Taxi"...very nice work here.
Andrew Haigh's "45 Years"...measured pace kills the momentum
Scott Cooper's "Black Mass"...outstanding...return of Johnny Depp to actual acting.
Lazlo Nemes' "Son of Saul"...searing and daring.

Most Buzz About Films I Missed:

"Beasts of No Nation"
"Marguerite"
"Room"

MORE WEIRDNESS

Here's something that doesn't happen to me every day.  Got into a little Twitter back and forth with Seth Rogen.  Yes, THE Seth Rogen here in town for "Steve Jobs".  I happened to tweet that I wasn't going to the Danny Boyle tribute screening of "Steve Jobs" but was going to attend the separate screening at The Galaxy.  Mr. Rogen took me to task, humorously I believe, via Twitter.

It was fun and weird at the same time.

  1. not enough to give the man the goddam respect of going to his tribute!!! Aaaaahhh!!!

HEADING HOME

As you read this I am in the Jeep headed back to the real world...not because I want to but because I will be in a classroom on Tuesday morning.

I hope your fest was as wonderful and memorable as mine.

From embracing the father of a Nobel Peace Prize winner to re-kindling acquaintances who have become, I believe friends: Chris Schiller, Sasha Stone, Kris Tapley, Tomris Laffly, Alex Billington, this has been a a remarkable fest.

Also, as has become a bit if a tradition, it was a hoot to have part of my family in town for the festival.  Shout out to my Mom and Dad, Patt and Calvin Patterson and my brother Jim Patterson who made his first foray into Telluride in many a decade and seemed no worse for the wear as the weekend ended.

My eternal thanks to our hosts: Larry and Mitzi Mallard...we really don't deserve your kindness.

And a big thanks to those of you who have read Michael's Telluride Film Blog.  I ran into many of you over the weekend and let me tell you how incredibly wonderful it is to find out how many of you take the time to read MTFB.  Thanks...

Keep a lookout over the next few days.  I'll soon have "The Professionals Telluride" collated and I'll post that as soon as I can get that all together.

Also, don't forget to do your part.  Send in your film ratings on a 1-5 scale and I'll put up "The People's Telluride" as well.

That's all folks!
