Roger Corman 1926-2024 / Last Word on Cannes Before It Launches

 ROGER CORMAN 1926-2024

Film pioneer and legend Roger Corman died on Saturday.  Among other things, Corman was a Telluride tribute recipient in 2012.  That afforded me the opportunity to meet him and express my appreciation for what he had done for the universe of film.  It was a brief exchange and he graciously accepted my gratitude.

I'm sure most of the readers of this space are abundantly aware of Corman's legacy in film.  The film Stage listed the following as film folk to whom Corman helped to launch:

Martin Scorsese
Francis Ford Coppola
Jack Nicholson
Robert De Niro
James Cameron
Jonathan Demme
Peter Bogdanovich
John Sayles
Dennis Hopper
Joe Dante
Ron Howard
Bruce Dern
Sylvester Stallone
William Shatner

Here's my photo of meeting Corman in 2012 just outside the Galaxy:

The eulogies and remembrances have been all over social media.  They have strongly reminded us of the legacy that Corman leaves behind.  You could make the argument that ne was as responsible as anyone for the greatness of the films of the 1970s.

A titan.

Here are Corman obituaries from:

LAST WORD ON CANNES BEFORE IT LAUNCHES

Both The Playlist and The Film Stage have posted lists of Cannes films they regard as most anticipated and so as we head into the two week fest which traditionally crosses over around an average of eight films to TFF each year.

And so, with one more eye toward that here are the films that each source listed that, to me, feel like possibilities for The SHOW.

From both lists (including "Honorable Mentions":

Bird (Arnold)
Emilia Perez (Audiard)
Oh, Canada (Schrader)
The Apprentice (Abassi)
Megalopolis (Coppola)
Parthenope (Sorrentino)
Rumours (Maddin and Johnsons)

Additionally from The Playlist:

Meeting with Pol Pot (Panh)
The Seed of the Sacred Fig (Rasoulof)
The Most Precious of Cargoes (Hazanavicius)

Additionally from The Film Stage:

Napoleon (Gance)

Corman and YouTube/Forte and Squibb and Nebraska/SPC Bosses Honored

Good Friday everyone.  The CEO and I are on the road today to Little Rock, AR. and then onto Birmingham AL. for the National Speech Tournament.  It should be a week of forensic fun!

CORMAN AND YOU TUBE

One of the great thrills of TFF #39 was the opportunity to meet and pass a few words with film making legend Roger Corman.  Corman may single-handedly be responsible, indirectly, for a huge chunk of the best American cinema of the last half century.

Always a visionary in terms of making films make money, Corman is delving into his considerable backlog of film to start a YouTube channel that will feature that material.  Need to see the original "Little Shop of Horrors"?  This could be your answer.

The full story is here from The Los Angeles Times:

FORTE AND SQUIBB AND NEBRASKA

You probably should get used to this.  Will Forte and June Squibb in a post from HitFix/YouTube talking about Alexander Payne's "Nebraska".  Stuff like this is likely to be appearing on this blog a good deal over the next  10 weeks or so as "Nebraska" is almost certainly going to be on the SHOW's 40th playlist.  (it may actually be the #1 "Bet" when my first "ten Bets" list goes up in a couple of weeks).  Here's the link:

SPC BOSSES GET FETED

I reported on Tuesday that Sony Pictures Classics chiefs Tom Bernard and Michale Barker were to be the initial recipients of The Museum of the Moving Image's Envision Award for being "transformational leaders in film".  SPC is usually well represented at the Telluride Film Festival.

Anne Thompson of Thompson on Hollywood filed this report of the evening' activities:

Roger in Action/Amour/No/Barbara/Argo/Oscar Matters/Coming Attractions: August?/And of Course...

Good Thursday to All...

How about we start with a little...

ROGER IN ACTION

One of my favorite moments at this year's Telluride SHOW was getting the opportunity to hear and then meet the amazing Roger Corman.  Just a wonderful man who has made so much of what we think of as great cinema possible because he produced/directed classic B movies that gave some our most talented film makers their chance to get in and learn the business of film making.

Now comes word (as of yesterday) that Mr. C has new plans.  Re-visiting his glorious past, The Hollywood Reporter says that the 86 year old legend is going to produce 8 low budget re-make/adaptions of Edgar Allan Poe stories...yes please.  Here's the post:

AMOUR

Michael Haneke's "Amour" is at the front of the Best Foreign Language Film pack.  Barring some weirdness, it's your likely Oscar winner in that category.   Its distributor, Sony Pictures Classics, has bigger plans including possible nominations for Best Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, Actress and Actor.  These are all possible to varying degrees...the Emanuelle Riva nomination for Best Actress being the most likely, but none of them are impossibilities.  It will be interesting to see how often it shows up when nominations are announced on Jan. 10.  I currently have it at #8 on The FAC Best Picture chart, which if The Wrap is to be believed (see story below) is exactly where the cut off point would be.  Riva is at #4 for Best Actress, Jean Louis Trintignant is it #7 for Best Actor, Haneke is #3 for Original Screenplay and #7 for Direction.  In my post Telluride polls of film critics/bloggers "Amour landed at #10 and The People's Telluride poll listed it at #6.

The Daily Beast has a new look at the film up this week and talked to Haneke as a part of that.  You can find it here:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/12/19/amour-the-year-s-best-foreign-film-courts-oscar.html

Also from The Carpetbagger at The New York Times:

And The Wrap:

NO

Pablo Larrain's "No" starring Gael Garcia Bernal was one of this year's Telluride entries that is getting a good deal of mention as a possible Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film.  "No" currently sits at #4 on the latest review of that category in the Film Awards Clearinghouse, meaning it would be one of the five nominated pictures.  In our critics' poll after the festival "No" was ranked #12.  The People's Telluride poll ranked it at # 21.

It dropped an English language trailer this week and announced a U.S. premiere date as well.

Here's the trailer:

And accompanying posts about the premiere date and the trailer from Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere, The Wrap, SlashFilm Entertainment Weekly and The Playlist:

BARBARA

Another TFF #39 foreign film that is making some noise in terms of a potential nomination for Best FLF is the German entry "Barbara".  It's at #8 on the FAC and was rated at #7 by the People's poll after the festival.

The Playlist posted an article about director Christian Petzold this week.  You can find that here:

ARGO

I've added this week's post from Kristopher Tapley at InContention/HitFix as he talks to Director Ben Affleck and writer Chris Terrio:

OSCAR MATTERS

I've included two very informative posts from earlier this week that explain the Best Picture nominating process in detail.  It will make your head hurt.  Also, Steve Pond from The Warp says it will be 8 films this year.  The other post is from Gold Derby:

COMING ATTRACTIONS: AUGUST?

There's very little secret that I'd love to see the big screen adaptation of Tracy Letts' Pulitzer Prize winning play "August: Osage County" show up at the SHOW next Labor Day.

I read it fairly early on...and caught the play in New York before it closed. It also doesn't hurt that it's set in my native Oklahoma and shot, in part, here in the state.

Could it play Telluride? That's only a maybe at best.

IMDb lists it in post production...and you know that its distributor, The Weinstein Company, is going to want it to be in the thick of Oscar discussions for 2013.  Those two factors probably help...but they don't make it a lock by any means.

Yes.  The Weinsteins did bring both "The Artist" and "The King's Speech" to T-ride on the way to Oscar glory.  But, this past year, TWC was in T-ride with only "The Sapphires".  Their big Oscar guns ("The Master", "Django" and "Silver Linings Playbook") went other directions.

I also wonder if there might not be some blowback from the whole "Master" not being in Telluride situation, regardless of what hat story actually was.

Finally, TWC has Lee Daniel's "The Butler" and James Gray's "Nightingale" also as potential awards contenders that may or may not be in the Telluride mix.  I rather think "Nightingale" more than "The Butler" considering Gray's attendance at part of last year's fest with a bit of the film to show during the Marion Cotillard tribute.

So...50-50 maybe.

One other factor that may be in play...George Clooney is one of the films producers.  A good deal of that side of the equation (i.e. the film makers and their decision about wanting to be in Telluride) may rest on whether Mr. Clooney enjoyed his tribute weekend at TFF #38.  I tend to believe that he did and that probably gives T-ride a chance at landing the film.

Also, let's see if it ends up being any part of the Cannes fest in May...

Here are the large number of posts/stories I have gathered about it over the past few months...enjoy...

AND OF COURSE...

Regular readers won't be surprised to learn that I have begun reaching out to the handful of people in The Academy and other members of the film industry to begin to pick their brains about the awards season.

I've already had some responses.

Those insights should be headed to you very soon.

Really?  Me?  OK.

Then watched the film...see below...

Next "Amour"...see below

And finally, "Hyde Park on Hudson"...and a surprise entrance by Bill Murray...

Nice day, friends.

A FEW MOMENTS WITH ALEXANDER PAYNE

Alexander Payne

Alexander Payne has 2 Oscars...both for screenwriting  One for "Sideways' and the other for last year's "The Descendants".  He's funny, acerbic and very smart.

Saturday morning as I was walking into The Chuck for the Roger Corman tribute I noticed that he was in the house and 4 rows in front of me...so, on a whim, I approached and asked if we could do an interview...he said then would be good and suddenly I found myself talking to one of the industry's brightest lights.

Giddy?  Um...Yes.

And so, here's what I learned from/about Alexander Payne on a Saturday morning in Telluride (Mountain Village), CO.

Payne's involvement in the TFF came as after having been invited twice to present his own features here and having been unable to accept those invitations due to logistical and timing issues.  Payne was then asked to Guest direct in 2009.

He's returned each year since.  In 2010 as a fan.  In 2011 as the writer/director of "The Descendants" and this year as a presenter/programmer.  He explained that the Festival directors have given him license to "eyes" as he put it.  To be on the lookout for interesting film possibilities.  He told me that he'd stumbled across "I Knew Her Well" from Italian director Antonio Pietrangeli, suggested that it be programmed and it was.

I also asked Payne to talk a little bit about his upcoming project.  Payne set aside pre-productiion time this weekend as he seems to really enjoy the difference about the Telluride Film Fest compared to most other major festivals.  That being said, Payne revealed that shooting for his next feature "Nebraska" is set to start in 6 weeks.  "Nebraska" stars Will Forte (of Saturday Night Live and "MacGruber" fame) and Bruce Dern.  Bruce's daughter Laura arrived just as I was concluding my 2 minute/3 question session (I told him I'd be short!)  She was stunning.

Mr. Payne...If you're reading this...I hope you feel that I've done you proud.

Alexander Payne's IMDb entry: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0668247/

THE SAPPHIRES ROCK

Me and "The Sapphires" director Wayne Blair

Following the very entertaining Roger Corman tribute, I caught Wayne Blair's "The Sapphires".  And so should you...

First of all, Chris O'Dowd, playing a washed-up Irish keyboardist who stumbles upon an aboriginal girl group in 1968 Australia is wonderful.  He manages them into a gig entertaining American troops in Vietnam. The Weinsteins need to seriously think about a qualifying run for the film as O'Dowd should be a legitimate contender in the Best Supporting Actor category.  Superlative work.

Secondly, the music...I'm a sucker for old school soul and R+B and it is executed with aplomb.  The 4 women playing the "Sapphires" just nail it.

Thirdly... it's a feel good true story well executed.  Director Wayne Blair has achieved a small miracle.  Blair, in post screening comments, said that the film has been a hit in Aussie land as well it should be.

Fourth, not only has it got soul (music) but heart as well as we learn the back story of these 4 women, sisters and a cousin and how their family story acts as the mechanism to explore Australia's history of racism, exclusion and subjugation of its native peoples.  So some big themes as well.

Director Blair and screenwriters Tony Briggs and Keith Thompson manage to mix this all together winningly.

Catch this if you can today at The Palm at 4:00 (or at a TBA Monday)...thank me later.

The Sapphires IMDb entry: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1673697/

AMOUR

Michael Haneke follows "The White Ribbon" with this story of an octogenarian couple faced with a wife's increasing disability due to stroke.  This won the Palme D'or at Cannes this year.  Fine performances from Jean Louis Trintignant and Isabelle Huppert and an incredible turn by the 85 year old Emmanuelle Riva...she IS fearless!

Tough story... and perhaps too astringent from Haneke for my pallette.

"Amour's" IMDb entry: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1602620/

HYDE PARK ON HUDSON SURPRISE

Well, you've heard, Bill Murray showed up last night as an unannounced guest for the screening of "Hyde Park on Hudson" at The Galaxy.

For my money, it's a pleasant enough film...good performances from all concerned with Murray as FDR and Samuel West as the King of England particularly good.

It's pretty to look at, just doesn't seem to have a lot going on dramatically.

Tipped in some quarters as possible Oscar material for Murray, Laura Linney (as FDR's mistress) as well as Olivia Colman and Olivia Williams (Queen Elizabeth and Eleanor Roosevelt respectively), I'd be a bit surprised if it has that kind of traction.

But it was great to be surprised by Murray's entrance and to listen to his humor in the Q+A that followed.  Maybe I'll get a chance to run into him today.

Hyde Park's IMDb entry: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1477855/

MY SUNDAY SKED

I'm catching the Marion Cotillard tribute and "Rust and Bone" first thing today.  Then the animation program that has been TBAed at The Mason's.  After that...up in the air...maybe the Polley Doc.

More later...

WHAT IS THIS FILM CALLED LOVE? (d. Mark Cousins, Ireland-Mexico, 2012).

I'm going to do my level best to find an e-version of the schedule that I've already seen floating around and post that.

THE SURPRISES...

Well, I feel that my Top Ten Bets looked pretty good.  At this point, it seems I missed on "Argo".  But, let me tell you...at weekend's end I'll be 10 for 10.  "Argo" will sneak at some point this weekend.

Here were the final "Ten Bets":

1) Rust and Bone
2) Hyde Park on Hudson
3) The Central Park Five
4) Frances Ha
5) Ginger and Rosa
6) No
7) Argo
8) Amour
9) Midnight's Children
10) The Hunt

Now 11-20...different story (I knew I should have listened to that inner voice that was telling me not to do "Ten More Bets").

Here were the "Ten More Bets" I listed yesterday:

11) At Any Price
12) On the Road
13) Passion
14) The Gatekeepers
15) The Sapphires
16) The Iceman
17) A Royal Affair
18) Ernest and Celestine
19) Bromberg's Chaplin Restoration
20) Populaire

As I write this the announced schedule does include: "At Any Price" (#11), "The Gatekeepers (#14), "The Sapphires" (#15), "The Iceman (#16),  and "A Royal Affair" (#17).

The "main" program includes 11 films not in either the final "Ten Bets" or the :Ten More Bets".  But I will note that of those 11...I did mention "The Act of Killing" and "Love, Marilyn" in the late going as Telluride possibles/probables.

The thing I'm most surprised by is the "no shows" for "Passion" and "On the Road".  I was morally certain that they would play.  And I suppose they still could, but the current scuttlebutt is that "Argo" may well be the lone "Sneak" TBA...

AND THEN THERE'S "THE MASTER"...

There are, still, a devoted core of die hard hopefuls that think that there is some chance that Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" will play as a TBA this weekend.

No one wants to believe that more than I...

The current "rumor/buzz" has to do with "Baraka" which is apparently set to show in the same 70mm format that Mr. Anderson shot "The Master" in and clearly wants it to be seen in.   It appears that "Baraka" is set for a Sunday morning showing at the Galaxy Theater and that there is a 10am TBA following that on the schedule.  Further, The Galaxy seems to be historically where 70mm is shown at TFF.

Even further, Ms. Laura Dern is reportedly in town...and those of us who have obsessed over "The Master" know that she's a part of the cast (albeit a small one).

Needless to say, those of us who desperately want "The Master" in that slot are connecting these dots.

But I'm telling you, Anne Thompson of Thompson on Hollywood says the Fest could have programmed "The Master" and opted not to.  It appears that the sneak pop-up presentations around the country the last few weeks were the determining factor.  Wish it were otherwise.

Thompson's post is here: http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/telluride-fest-skips-master-adds-last-minute-argo-and-eclectic-programming-delights

I'LL TELL YOU WHAT'S COOL

I'm usually pretty unconcerned about the actual tributes...want to see the film that's attached...not sure I need to see the actual tribute...

Not true this year.  I am absolutely hot to see the Marion Cotillard and the Roger Corman tribs...

Cotillard...beautiful, french and phenomenally talented.  I'll be there!

Corman..."King of the B's" and maybe responsible for more of the best American cinema than almost anyone else because of who he mentored.  You can draw a direct line from Corman to the creators of what I think are some of  the best films ever made: "Godfather II", "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", "Taxi Driver", "American Graffiti", "Chinatown", "L.A. Confidential".

Like a million other slobs, I have a script or two (and ideas for a dozen more) and I'd like to believe that someday one of them might actually get made.  And for peeps like me who have the dream, Roger Corman is that example of making it happen under almost any circumstance.   I salute you sir...as does this festival this weekend.

Corman is in Telluride as I write.  Hope I get to meet him.

LAST CALL

The 39th Telluride Film Festival should drop their official lineup around noon today.  That's about the time the CEO and I will be making tracks in a westerly direction.  I anticipate being able to post the lineup soon after it goes up even if  I'm on the road.  Nevertheless, it's been a great time this last few months trying to ferret out what we might see this coming weekend.  Below will be the last "Ten Bets" for this   SHOW (actually, more than ten, as you will see).

My thanks to all of you who have read this thing at any point...and also to those people who do this professionally who I shamelessly mine for nuggets that I then try to turn into some sort of map for the T-ride lineup.

As always a big thanks to Mitzi and Larry Mallard who really do make the whole thing possible.

Also thanks to the CEO...who really does put up with this obsession with a stunning amount of grace and good will.  I don't know that I'd be as patient should the shoe be on the other foot.

MAYBE THE THIRD TRIBUTE???

It has been reported that actors Marion Cotillard and Mads Mikkelsen are two Tributees this year leaving us to wonder who might be the third (assuming Telluride does what it has done in the past and honors three people)...then some news yesterday sent up my radar.

Often the Fest warms up the locals and early-arrivers (and their outdoor equipment) with films in the Elks Park on Wednesday and Thursday nights prior to the fest.  These film choices can act as clues to Tributees.  Last year "Michael Clayton" was a choice starring George Clooney and Tilda Swinton both of whom were feted at Tributes.  The year before saw the presentation of "Once Upon a Time in the West" Starring Claudia Cardinale...a Tributee.

Last night in Telluride they showed the new version of the James Bond flick "Casino Royale" starring Daniel Craig...wait, it's NOT Craig...and Mads Mikkelsen as the villain...now you see...

Tonight's scheduled film in the park...from 1979 "Rock and Roll High School"

Huh?

It starred Vincent Van Patten and P.J. Soles and Clint Howard (Ron's brother...can't see a tribute for any of these fine people) and Dick Miller who made something of a name as a guy in a ton of Roger Corman "B" flicks...wait...Roger Corman executive produced "R and R High"!

Eureka!

Now, I don't know that Corman's going to be in town (but there's a rumor...) and I don't know who the third tribute is...but...

King of the B's anyone?
