The 86th Oscars and Telluride: Analysis and Numbers

Well, we're digesting now.

TFF #40 hosted films with 33 Oscar nominations among them this morning plus an additional two from TFF #39.

"Gravity"-10
"12 Years a Slave"-9
"Nebraska"-6
"Inside Llewyn Davis"-2

One each for : "Prisoners", "The Wind Rises", "The Missing Picture", "The Invisible Woman", "All is Lost" and "Get a Horse!"

TFF #39 had "The Act of Killing" and "The Hunt"

After this morning's announcement of Oscar nominees there are a few takeaways.

1) The Academy spread the wealth, which, in a year that has such an abundance of quality films, makes sense.  Ten films had four or more nominations this morning.

2) "Inside Llewyn Davis" was not saved by the voting system.  I had a theory that, though the majority of Academy members didn't connect with the film, that there would be enough passionate devotees that it might pull a surprise Best Picture nomination.  Um...nope.

3) "American Hustle" looks like the film to beat at this point.  I have been pretty firm since I saw "12 Years a Slave" in Telluride that it was your Best Picture winner.  That seems possible still, but unlikely.

4) For the third straight year nine films were nominated which empirically indicates that we might now expect that every year.

Category by category.

BEST PICTURE: The FAC got all nine.  Nine films nominated.  No "Inside Llewyn Davis".  Boomlets for "Wolf", "Dallas" "Her" and "Philomena" were all real.

BEST DIRECTION: The FAC went 4 of 5.  Little surprised that Paul Greengrass missed but pleased about Payne.

BEST ACTRESS:  The FAC goes 4  of 5.  No Emma Thompson was a bit of a surprise.  ("Saving Mr. Banks" at one time looked to be a big Oscar player.  This morning it had only one nomination: Score).  Most thought that it was between Streep and Adams (#6 on last FAC)  for spot #5...guess not.

BEST ACTOR: The FAC 4 of 5. Bale in for Hanks in maybe the toughest category.  Would have liked to have seen Redford and Isaac.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS:  The FAC goes 4 of 5.  Hawkins gets in (she was #6 on the last FAC) displacing Oprah. (Lee Daniels The Butler gets the goose egg in all categories)

SUPPORTING ACTOR: The FAC 4 of 5.  Jonah Hill (from the #6 spot) in Daniel Bruhl: out...(read what I said here yesterday)

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: The FAC is perfect, 5 for 5.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: The FAC gets 4 of 5.  The #6 Script, "Dallas" instead of "Llewyn".  I was afraid of that.

CINEMATOGRAPHY: The FAC hit 4 of 5 with "The Grandmaster" surging.  This was one of the places I thought "12 Years a Slave" would pick up a nomination.

FILM EDITING: The FAC goes 4 of 5.  "Dallas Buyers Club" came out of nowhere to get this nomination and it's a testament to how much The Academy must love this film.  As a matter of fact, "Dallas" might be your real sleeper for a Best Picture upset on Mar. 2.

PRODUCTION DESIGN: The FAC hits just 2 of 5.  Yikes!

ORIGINAL SONG:  The FAC goes 4 of 5...but I don't think anyone had "Alone Yet Not Alone" anywhere.

ORIGINAL SCORE: The FAC 4 of 5 here.  Again, another "12 Years a Slave" nomination I thought was very likely that didn't materialize.

ANIMATED FEATURE: 4 of 5 here.  The #6 film "Ernest and Celestine" made it in while "Monsters University" did not.

FEATURE DOCUMENTARY: The FAC is 3 of 5. The exclusion of "Stories We Tell" and "Blackfish" might be two of the biggest surprises of the day.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE:  Again 3 of 5.

VISUAL EFFECTS: 4 of 5.

COSTUMES: 4 of 5.  "The Grandmaster" is a surprise here.

SOUND EDITING: 3 of 5.

SOUND MIXING: 3 of 5.

I didn't make in calls for Makeup/Hair or the Shorts categories.

FINAL THOUGHTS UNTIL MONDAY...

FAC total for 2014: 80 of 104 for a 77% success rate...about normal.

#6 ranked films/ people were nominated (instead of a "favorite") in Best Actress (Adams), Supporting Actress (Hawkins), Supporting Actor (Hill), Original Screenplay (Dallas Buyers Club), Production Design (Gravity), Original Song (Happy from Despicable Me 2) and Animated Feature (Ernest and Celestine).

All in all, looking back to yesterday's commentary, I feel okay about most of this year's guesses.

More on Monday...Have a great weekend.

Telluride #40 Pedigrees/New Gurus/Nebraska Trailer and Poster/12 Years a Slave News

Good Thursday morning to everyone.  Hope your week has been going well.

TELLURIDE #40 PEDIGREES

I'm always very interested to trace the lineage of the films that play at the festival each year as I believe that there are clues to their inclusion that can then  be used to increase the precision in attempting to divine the festival lineups in the future.  To that end, I thought I'd take a few minutes and spend a few words on this year's crop of films included in the main program, the sneak previews and a few of The Backlot films.

For example, take a look at "The Usual Suspects", directors who have appeared at TFF with some frequency.  This year that included: Phillipe Claudel/"Before the Winter Chill", Agneizska Holland/"Burning Bush", Werner Herzog/"Aguirre: The Wrath of God" and "Death Row: Milam and Fratta", Jason Reitman/"Labor Day", Alexander Payne/"Nebraska", Asghar Farhadi/"The Past", Errol Morris/"The Unknown Known", Mark Cousins/"A Story of Children and Film" and "Here Be Dragons", Steve McQueen/"12 Years a Slave" and Denis Villenueve/"Prisoners".

"The Cannes Connection":  As is usually the case, there was a strong Cannes presence at this year's edition of Telluride including: "All is Lost", "Blue is the Warmest Color", "Inside Llewyn Davis", "The Lunchbox", "Manuscripts Don't Burn", "The Missing Picture", "Nebraska", "The Past", "Jodorowsky's Dune" and "A Story of Children and Film".  10 Cannes films in all made the trek across the Atlantic to be at Telluride.

"The Berlin Connection":  The overlap between Telluride and Berlin was a little larger this year than usual: "Fifi Howls with Happiness", "Gloria", La Maison de la Radio" and "Slow Food Story".  Four films played both fests.

"The Distributors": Five "Indie" distributors plus Warner Brothers accounted for 14 films.

The biggest footprint (as usual) belonged to Sony Pictures Classics with five films: "The Invisible Woman", "The Lunchbox", "The Past", "Tim's Vermeer" and "Jodorowsky's Dune".

The Weinstein Company and their offshoot Radius-TWC had three: "Tracks", "The Unknown Known" and "Salinger" which, you may have heard, was  a last minute replacement for "Philomena".

Fox Searchlight had "12 Years a Slave" and Roadside Attractions had "All is Lost" and "Gloria".

Sundance Selects had "Blue is the Warmest Color".

Warner Brothers, which had "Argo" at Telluride in 2012 added "Gravity" and "Prisoners' to the T-ride lineup this year.

"The Toronto Connection": As has been the case for a number of years, there was a tremendous overlap between Telluride and various sections of the Toronto International Film Festival.  I count 22 films that played both places: "The Lunchbox", "12 Years a Slave", "Blue is the Warmest Color", "Burning Bush", "Gloria", "Gravity", "Ida", "The Invisible Woman", "Labor Day", "The Past", "Prisoners", "Starred Up", "Tracks", "Under the Skin", "The Wind Rises", "Jodorowsky's Dune", "Tim's Vermeer", "A Story of Children and Film", "The Unknown Known", "Manuscripts Don't Burn", "Bethlehem" and "Palo Alto".

"The New York Connection":  Again, there is normally a significant overlap between the two fests.  This year from NY's original announced list of "main slate" films, they will share: "All is Lost", "Blue is the Warmest Color", "Burning Bush", "Gloria", "Inside Llewyn Davis", "The Invisible Woman", ""The Missing Picture", "Nebraska" and "The Wind Rises".  New York has also reportedly added "12 Years a Slave" for a total of 10 films playing both fests.

And then there's the unusual...There was a greater overlap this year between Venice and Telluride than in most years as the two fests shared six films: "Bethlehem", "Gravity", "Tracks", "Under the Skin", "The Unknown Known" and "The Wind Rises".  In a normal year these two festivals would share an average of three films.  The maximum number of shared films between Telluride and Venice since 2005 has been four so 2013 was extraordinary.

Add all this to the database to be used when we get ready to start thinking about the 41st Telluride Film Festival.

NEW GURUS OF GOLD

Movie City News posted a new Gurus of Gold Best Picture chart early this morning.  It reflects the thinking of their 15 Oscarologists after Telluride, Venice and Toronto.  The MCN people had the Gurus vote in a different fashion for this edition, choosing a Top Eight without ranking and then a Next Seven, also without ranking.  "12 Years a Slave" and "Gravity" were unanimous Top Eight choices.  Also mentioned on either or both charts:   "Nebraska", "Inside Llewyn Davis", "All is Lost", "Labor Day", "The Lunchbox", "Blue is the Warmest Color",  and "Prisoners".  TFF #39 documentary from Sarah Polley "Stories We Tell" is also mentioned.

Here are those results:

NEBRASKA DROPS A TRAILER AND A POSTER

Any number of websites trumpeted the appearance of an official trailer for Alexander Payne's "Nebraska" on Tuesday.  I've included the trailer here and links to multiple posts that had the news:

Additionally, Rope of Silicon reported that "Nebraska" will open a week earlier than had been planned.  The film is now set to open on Nov. 15.  Here's that ROS post:

12 YEARS A SLAVE NEWS

Days after winning the Audience Award at Toronto (And finishing #1 in The Pros Telluride Ratings and the Combo Ratings and #2 in The People's Telluride ratings), Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave" continues to make noise.  IndieWire collected the votes of nearly three dozen critics from Toronto and posted the results on Tuesday.  "12 Years" was named Best Narrative Feature, Best Direction, Best Lead and Supporting Performances and Best Ensemble.  Here's the link to the Top Five in a number of categories.

TFF #40 films in addition to "12 Years" fared very well including "Gravity", "Under the Skin", "Tim's Vermeer", "The Unknown Known", "Jodorowsky's Dune", "Blue is the Warmest Color" and others.

IndieWire's Steve Greene provided some context for the CriticWire findings in this post:

40th Poster/Artist Revealed/The "Zog" Is On/Payne on Nebraska/Day to Day

40TH TFF POSTER/ARTIST REVEALED
Like the other journalists on the Telluride Film Festival mailing list, I got word late last week that a poster artist had been selected and the poster for TFF #40 had been unveiled.  I have included the poster image and the accompanying news release from TFF P.R. head Shannon Goodwin Mitchell:

TELLURIDE FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES DEAN TAVOULARIS
AS 40th ANNIVERSARY FESTIVAL POSTER ARTIST

May 30, 2013

BERKELEY, CA – 40th Telluride Film Festival (August 29 – September 2, 2013), presented by National Film Preserve LTD., proudly announces Oscar-winning production designer Dean Tavoularis as its 2013 poster artist. Tavoularis will attend the 40th Telluride Film Festival over Labor Day weekend to present his poster design to the public and hold a poster signing for festival guests.

As a student, Dean Tavoularis studied painting and architecture at different art schools and went on to work at Disney Studios as an in-betweener in the animation department where he worked on the 1955 film “Lady and the Tramp.” He then transitioned to the live-action department where he worked on the 1954 film “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.” His career as a production designer began in 1967 when filmmaker Arthur Penn asked him to lead the artistic direction for “Bonny And Clyde.” Three years later, he and Penn teamed up again on “Little Big Man.” He began working with Francis Ford Coppola in 1972 on “The Godfather”, which was the beginning of much collaboration including the latter two films in “The Godfather” trilogy and “Apocalypse Now.”

Tavoularis has spent the last ten years focusing on his work as a painter. His return to film came in 2012 when he was the production designer on Roman Polanski’s “Carnage.” He has worked on over thirty films spanning four decades, landing five Academy-Award nominations and one win for “The Godfather Part II.” Tavoularis lives in Paris and Los Angeles with his wife, actress Aurore Clément.

“We are thrilled Dean agreed to do the poster art for the 40th anniversary,” said Executive Director Julie Huntsinger. “The 40th edition will be a remarkable celebration of TFF’s past and present, and Dean’s work with Telluride is a wonderful parallel. He was a part of Telluride in its very early years when he designed a poster for a TFF celebration called the ‘Spirit of Zoetrope.’ We are excited to have him back and to present his vision for this special year. ”

Tavoularis remarks, “When I was asked by Tom Luddy and Julie Huntsinger if I would design the poster for the 40th Telluride Film Festival, I was first flattered and then thoughtful of being part of the Telluride film history. In my own way I pondered Telluride’s past and in fact all film festivals. Like the word implies, a festival is a fair; people gathering to show their films. It just as well could be their tomatoes. It’s an exchange. I wanted a poster that was simple and joyful, that looked homemade with pure colors in shapes that symbolize a 1:85 screen and an audience. One cannot exist without the other. I am very happy to be a small part of Telluride’s history.”

Dean Tavoularis joins a prestigious list of artists who have shared their talents with Telluride Film Festival. Past poster artists include Ed Ruscha, John Mansfield, Julian Schnabel, Dottie Attie, Doug and Mike Starn, David Lance Goines, Chuck Jones, David Salle, Alexis Smith, Jim Dine, Seymour Chwast, Frederic Amat, Francesco Clemente, Dave McKean, Gary Larson, Chip Kidd, John Canemaker, Mark Stock, Laurie Anderson, William Wegman, Ralph Eggleston, Maira Kalman and Dave Eggers.

THE "ZOG" IS ON TRACK

If you've been reading this blog for the past 9 months, you know that there is a plan to add a new, large venue for TFF #40.  The new facility will be in Town Park and, for the festival, will be named the Werner Herzog Theater (or "The Zog"...well, that's what I'm calling it.  We'll see if that nickname catches on).  The Watch newspaper in Telluride reported this week that the process is humming right along:

PAYNE TALKS NEBRASKA

Telluride regular and former Guest Director Alexander Payne was in Cannes last month with his new film "Nebraska" in competition.  The films lead,Bruce Dern, was named Best Actor.  I think "Nebraska" is very likely to be a part of the Telluride slate and that Dern is a serious candidate for Oscar consideration (and maybe a TFF tribute?).
Payne talked about "Nebraska" at a press conference that immediately followed the press screening of the film in Cannes last week.  Nigel M. Smith of IndieWire filed this post:

I'M BAAAAACK...

Today marks the return of 6 times a week posting for MTFB/FAC.  I'll be putting something up Mondays through Saturdays starting today and right through to the end of TFF #40.
Hope you enjoy!

Call for Film/Cannes is Near/CP5 on PBS/Rudderless Shoot

Good Monday to all!

CALL FOR FILM

The 40th Telluride Film Festival is calling for entry submissions now.  July 1 and July 15 are the key dates.  Dear Cinema.com posted the information this weekend:

http://dearcinema.com/call-for-entry/call-for-entry-40th-telluride-film-festival-2013/0645#

CANNES IS NEAR

More Cannes news this past weekend as it was announced that "Zuluz' will close the fest.  Additionally, we have confirmation that April 18th is the date for the announcement of the majority of the lineup.  Cannes traditionally has unveiled a number of films that then are a part of the Telluride lineup 3 1/2 months later.

Here's The Hollywood Reporter story on the closing film "Zulu":

CENTRAL PARK FIVE ON PBS

And we learned over the weekend that TFF #39 documentary "The Central Park Five" will appear on PBS nation.  The film was directed by Ken Burns, his daughter Sarah and her husband David McMahon.  PBS linked the YouTube trailer via Twitter this weekend:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYJ6jnFNoyo

RUDDERLESS SHOOT

And finally, the Oklahoma set film "Rudderless", directorial debut of William H. Macy, is reported to begin shooting in late April with the 20th rumored to be the start date.  An extras casting call was held last Saturday at a mall in OKC.

Reportedly, there is still one fairly major role to be cast.

The World Hears About TFF #40's Fifth Day (and its new theater)/Oscar Post-Mortems/

Good Monday morning to all of you...

THE WORLD LEARNS WHAT WE'VE KNOWN FOR A GOOD LONG WHILE

The Telluride Film Festival announced this past week that:

A) This year will be their 40th Anniversary.
B) That an extra day has been added to the schedule as a part of the anniversary celebration...it will start on Thursday, Aug. 29th this year.  We knew that as the festival head honchos told us at the opening day press gathering last September.
C) That there will be a new 650 seat theater venue...we've known that was in the works for awhile too.  It will be a re-modeled Hanley Pavilion in Telluride Town Park and will be named in honor of Telluride advisor-guest-presenter-guru-gadfly Werner Herzog.  (I saw one tweet this week suggesting the Theater be nicknamed "Der Werner".   I'm suggesting we call it "The Zog!").
D) Passes are now on sale for TFF #40.

The thing is, it was all officially announced this week and the film world took a good deal of notice.

Here's the press release from TFF and VP of Press Relations Shannon Goodwin Mitchell:

And here's some of the coverage that press release engendered:

OSCAR POST-MORTEMS

Kris Tapley and Anne Thompson dissect last week's Oscars on Oscar Talk:
Awards Daily's Sasha Stone does the same on her Oscar Podcast:

AND NOW...THE FIRST STAB IN THE DARK

The Hollywood Reporter posted its first spec piece about 2014 Oscar possibilities this week.  Yes, The body of the 85th Oscar ceremony was still warm.  Nevertheless, that's where I'll start with the speculation, analysis and guesswork for TFF #40.  The entire THR story is here:

But here's a quick rundown of the films that they include:
"August: Osage County"
"Captain Phillips"
"Foxcatcher"
"Fruitvale"
"Inside Llewyn Davis"
"Monuments Men"
"Nebraska"
"Saving Mr. Banks"
"Wolf of Wall Street"

So...what can I say about these 9 prospects?

Count on "Nebraska" being in Telluride.  Alexander Payne's new film with Bruce Dern and Will Forte will play.  Payne has become a T-ride regular after having guest directed and subsequently debuting "The Descendants" there.

Pic from "August: Osage County"

I suspect that there is at least some chance that we could see either (or both) "Monuments Men" and "August: Osage County".  That speculation is based in part on the George Clooney connection to both of those projects (producer on "August" and Producer-writer-director-actor on "Monuments").  Clooney was a tributee in 2011 and cannot have been displeased that "Argo", which he also co-produced, debuted at Telluride and went on to win Best Picture. Additionally, "August" is being distributed by The Weinstein Company which has had a presence at Telluride for some time including "The Sapphires", "Butter", "The Artist" and "The King's Speech".
Count "Foxcatcher" as a weak "Maybe".  It's directed by Bennett Miller and co-written by Dan Futterman who had great success with "Capote" at TFF in 2005.  So, that gives it a little shine...bur Bennett's last film "Moneyball" didn't play Telluride and "Foxcatcher's" distributor, Columbia, hasn't been a player at there.
Also in the incredibly weak "Maybe" column: "Wolf of Wall Street".  The Martin Scorsese directed film could conceivably show up because he's been there before and reportedly will have a Roger Ebert documentary, "Life Itself", that he executive produced playing as a part of the SHOW.  Here's that post from December:
Unlikely:  Both Tom Hanks projects: "Saving Mr. Banks" and "Captain Phillips" lack any real Telluride connections/characteristics.
Also unlikely is the Coen Brothers new picture "Inside Llewyn Davis".  The Coen's are likely to be included in the Cannes lineup and that might be the only festival play for the film.  One quick note that does give a tiny ray of hope is that one of the films production companies is Scott Rudin Productions which has had an occasional presence in T-ride including "Frances Ha" last year as well  "Margot at the Wedding".  Though, admittedly, that's a Noah Baumbach connection more than a Scott Rudin connection.
And "Fruitvale" is off the table as it premiered at Sundance.
That's all for now...More on Thursday...

Oscar and Telluride/And Our Attention to Turns To...

Good Morning to All...

OSCAR AND TELLURIDE

Last Sunday the 2012 Telluride Film Festival (#39) found itself as having been the North American host for 3 films that collectively earned 5 Oscars.  "Paperman (Best Animated Short) and "Amour" (Best Foreign Language Film) each won one apiece while "Argo" won 3: Best Film Editing, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film.

The SHOW continued this year to be a part of the awards season.

I have pointed out in the last few posts that Telluride has been the jumping off point for 4 out of the last 5 Best Picture winners.  Others have noticed as well.  John Horn posted a piece in the Los Angeles Times a couple of weeks ago making the same point and just this week The Hollywood Reporter noted that Telluride is or has been a crucial part of the awards season as one of the festivals that mattered most.  Joey Magidson's post  is here:

http://scottfeinberg.com/which-festivals-and-precursor-awards-mattered-most-in-the-oscars-outcome

Magidson also wrote a similar piece immediately after Oscar nominations were announced much to the same effect.  That's here:

http://scottfeinberg.com/which-film-festivals-and-release-periods-were-most-effective-for-this-years-oscar-nominees

And for good measure, here's the link again for the John Horn/LA times piece:

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/moviesnow/la-et-mn-oscars-2013-telluride-festival-emerges-as-best-picture-predictor-20130218,0,3533282.story

Denver Post film critic Lisa Kennedy posted recently that Telluride could, in fact, claim some credit for "Argo's" success.  That's here:

http://www.denverpost.com/movies/ci_22640149/can-telluride-take-some-credit-argos-success-sure

It makes for interesting reading and, as you might expect, I'll have more to say about this subject in the next couple of weeks.

AND OUR ATTENTION TURNS TO...

MTFB changes course now.  Oscars are over and it's time to start thinking about TFF #40 and begin playing the game of trying to ferret out what films may come our way over Labor Day weekend.  To that end I have included a link to a piece from Movie City News' Jeff Howell speculating on the possible films for the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Regular readers of this space and Telluride attendees know that Cannes and Telluride usually share many films.  Take a look at the Howell post...we'll talk on Monday:

http://moviecitynews.com/2013/02/divining-cannes-2013/

And that's all this morning for a truncated version of Michael's Telluride Film Blog.  I'm still in recovery mode...

TFF40/NBR'S Lists/New York Critics/TFF39 Film News/Oscar Matters/Coming Attractions

SECOND FILM FOR TFF #40...I KNOW IT...

A documentary based on Roger Ebert's autobiography and executive produced by Martin Scorsese.  This article claims that it's coming to TFF #40.  Sounds very plausible.  The big question...will Ebert and/or Scorsese attend?

http://wegotthiscovered.com/movies/martin-scorseses-roger-ebert-documentary-debut-2013/

Back on Aug. 29th I reported that the first known film would be a restoration of a silent film focused on Native Americans that has Ken Burns attached as one of the producers.  Here's the link to that blog post:

Biggest surprise(s) to me...Bradley Cooper over Day-Lewis and Phoenix and no mention of "Life of Pi" anywhere...which I'm OK with...Also a little surprised that neither the NYFCC on Monday or NBR today gave a shout out to Anne Hathaway in Les Miz...

COMING ATTRACTIONS

     GHOSTBUSTERS 3

This is NOT a Telluride possible, but it does have a Telluride?MTFB connection...

http://www.hollywood.com/news/Ghostbusters_3_is_a_go_as_Billy_Murray_signs_on_report/45472977

The first year I was at Telluride my wife and I were sitting at The Chuck waiting for some screening and Kris struck up a conversation with the young man to her left.  I really don't know how they got to it, but at one point she was telling him (and he claimed to be a minion at Universal...but who said his dad was some big VP there) about MY idea that I've had for years for GB#3...that Dr. Pete Venkman (Bill Murray his own self) IS...DEAD... and must be raised from the Great Beyond to help solve some existential threat from beyond the grave.  Really...that's MY idea.  Now with Murray's acquiescence to the project, I'm telling you...even if the film isn't parked at Universal...I'm going to think I need a civil attorney if that plot point shows up.

Remember, you read it here first...

     THE NIGHTINGALE (PREVIOUSLY "LOW LIFE")

One of the surprise highlights of this year's Telluride Fest was the super sneak peak at a few minutes of James Gray's "The Nightingale" starring tributee Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner.  Its brief appearance makes me think that it's a very real possibility for TFF #40 (and a Cannes appearance in May, I'll wager).

Here are a few posts about "The Nightingale":
