Euro Producers Part Three: The Brits-British Film Institute / A Look at Loving

Welcome to Wednesday...

EURO PRODUCERS PART THREE; THE BRITS: BRITISH FILM INSTITUTE

BFI hasn't been a long time fixture in as far as Telluride films are concerned going back over the past decade but, beginning with Ginger and Rosa in 2012, they have become a regular presence as the list below demonstrates.

BFI's past Telluride history includes:

2012: Ginger and Rosa
2013: Under the Skin
2014: Mr. Turner, '71
2015: Suffragette, 45 Years

Given the recent past and what BFI has had a hand in the only film that this truly points toward is Andrea Arnold's American Honey.  I've had American Honey consistently in my "Ten Bets" throughout the summer thus far.

Tomorrow we'll continue to look at European production houses and turn our attention to France.

A LOOK AT LOVING

A trailer has appeared for Jeff Nichols Cannes competition film Loving.  The film was well reviewed at Cannes in May and is regarded by many as a possible Oscar contender.  It stars Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton and concerns the true story of an interracial married couple in mid-20th century Virginia whose case in front of the Supreme Court overturned the Virginia law that made their marriage illegal.

Here's the official trailer via YouTube:

I have also linked coverage of the trailer release here:

More to come tomorrow...

Venetian News/Best of the Week

Good Saturday to All!

VENETIAN NEWS

Venice Film Festival stories have burst onto the web the last 24 hours and they may tell us some things about our appointment with film in Telluride in 7 weeks.

First...the jury.  Venice's jury was announced yesterday and you can get the entire scope here from The Hollywood Reporter:
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/venice-film-festival-jury-matteo-garrone-349032

The Telluride-centirc news here is that Matteo Garrone and Pablo Trapero are both jurors and I'm concluding that that means that their films are very likely off the table for Telluride.  For Garrone and his Cannes prize winning "Reality" that's a fairly big conclusion.  "Reality's" Telluride profile was substantial: Cannes, past T-ride connection ("Gomorrah").  I had also had Trapero's "Elefante Blanco" (White Elephant) as a T-ride possible...but both films now go off of consideration.

Second, The Playlist reports this morning that Italian newspaper La Republica is saying they have the lowdown on the Venice lineup...which, if true, might narrow the Telluride field somewhat.  Regular readers of this space know that there is usually a 2-4 film overlap between Venice and T-ride so an actual list of what's playing in Italy would give us some clues about what could be in and what could be out.

The Playlist report says that high profile pics "The Master", "To the Wonder", "The Place Beyond the Pines" and "All You Need is Love" are all going to be at Venice.  Also mentioned "Anna Karenina", "Something in the Air" and  "The Company you Keep".

Check the entire story here:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/italian-press-report-malicks-to-the-wonder-pta-s-the-master-anna-karenina-more-in-venice-line-up-20120714

I might point out that The Playlist does admit some skepticism...and with good reason and flat out says that "The Master" may forgo festivals altogether.

Meanwhile, third, Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere posted his musings about Telluride, Venice, Toronto and New York.  Most electrifying in that post was this:

"I don't think anyone on my level is going to have anything figured out until early August, but let's do some guessing. Not about Toronto, which is Walmart, but Telluride and New York. I can never figure out Venice.

Look at that list and begin to salivate my friends.  I hope he's somewhere close to correct AND that Telluride lands a majority of these.

Here's the full post from Wells:
If you read the comments, you'll see "Gort2" included there as well as good back and forth about whether "To the Wonder" will or won't be in Venice.

DAVE EGGERS IS YOUR POSTER ARTIST

Per this release from the Telluride Film Festival Press Office:

TFF Shop

TELLURIDE FILM FESTIVAL SELECTS DAVE EGGERS
AS ITS 2012 FESTIVAL POSTER ARTIST

July 9, 2012

BERKELEY, CA – Telluride Film Festival (August 31 – September 3, 2012), presented by National Film Preserve LTD., proudly announces it has selected American writer, editor, publisher and philanthropist Dave Eggers as its 39th Telluride Film Festival poster artist.

Eggers will attend the 39th Telluride Film Festival over Labor Day weekend to present his poster design to the public and hold a poster signing for festival guests. A special reception will also be held to honor Eggers, sponsored by the UCLA School of Theatre, Film and Television.

Dave Eggers began working as a freelance graphic designer out of college and then moved in to writing and editing at Salon.com. He founded Mightmagazine while also writing a comic strip for SF Weekly. He is the best-selling author of numerous books including his first work, a lightly fictionalized memoir, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius (2000), a national bestseller and finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction. You Shall Know Our Velocity (2002) was Eggers’ first published novel; an expanded and revised version was released as Sacrament in 2003. What is the What was a finalist for the 2006 National Book Critics Circle Award and won France’s Prix Medici. In 2009, the Council on American-Islamic Relations presented Eggers with the “Courage In Media” Award for his book Zeitoun. Film director Jonathan Demme has optioned the book, which has also won the American Book Award and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. Eggers co-wrote two screenplays in 2009: Away We Go and Where The Wild Things Are. His latest novel, A Hologram for the King, was released in 2012 to critical acclaim.

Eggers is the founder and editor of McSweeney’s, an independent publishing house based in San Francisco built to help emerging and underappreciated writers find their voice. The publishing house produces a daily humor website and publishes Timothy McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern, the Believer, Lucky Peach, Wholphin, Grantland Quarterly, and a growing selection of books under various imprints.

In 2002 Eggers co-founded 826 Valencia, a nonprofit writing and tutoring center for youth in the Mission District of San Francisco. The program offers free tutoring, English as a Second Language classes, writing workshops, summer camps, publications projects and other services to kids ages six to 18. Local communities have since opened sister 826 centers in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Ann Arbor, Seattle, Boston and Washington, DC.
A native of Chicago, Eggers now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and two children.
"Dave is well-known for his terrific literary works, but most people don’t know he was trained as a painter, and when he was starting out as a writer, he worked as an illustrator and graphic designer. The fact that he is a gifted visual artist is a bit of a secret we want to share with the world,” comments Julie Huntsinger, Telluride Film Festival co-director. “Dave is talented, big-hearted, smart and remarkably well-rounded. We’re overjoyed to have him join the Telluride Film Festival community as our poster artist this year. Our audiences will be delighted with the fresh take he has created for the artwork of TFF 39.

“I was thrilled to be asked to do the poster for this year’s Telluride Film Festival,” said Dave Eggers. “I decided to make the poster look a bit like the national parks posters from back in the day, and to go with a light, almost washed-out palette. That’s how I think of Colorado in the summer: sun-drenched and with incredible color combinations. From there, it just seemed appropriate to have a bear filming an elk.”

Dave Eggers joins a prestigious list of artists who have shared their talents with the Telluride Film Festival. Past poster artists include Ed Ruscha, John Mansfield, Julian Schnabel, Dottie Attie, Doug and Mike Starn, David Lance Goines, Chuck Jones, David Salle, Alexis Smith, Jim Dine, Seymour Chwast, Frederic Amat, Francesco Clemente, Dave McKean, Gary Larson, Chip Kidd, John Canemaker, Mark Stock, Laurie Anderson, William Wegman, Ralph Eggleston and Maira Kalman.

39th Telluride Film Festival passes are now available at www.telluridefilmfestival.org.

40th Anniversary of the Telluride Film Festival
Next year Telluride Film Festival will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary, scheduled for August 29 – September 2, 2013.  To commemorate this special occasion an additional day has been added to the usual four-day Festival, making room for a five-day bounty of special programming and festivities. Passes will be available for purchase beginning in March 2013.

EGGERS AND TELLURIDE

The news release hit my email yesterday at 11:44 AM CDT.  I had a post up at 12:02 PM CDT.  The news from the Telluride Film Festival Press Office was that author Dave Eggers had been selected as the poster artist for TFF#39...and the poster was up and running...

I think I had the story up first anywhere on the web...by a ways...

The frustration, such as it was, when it came to re-tweeting/re-posting...nada...zip...zilch.  As the story rolled through the afternoon all of the movie blog type outlets you'd expect got it posted and it looks like Anne Thompson's "Thompson on Hollywood" got the majority of re-production.  Good for her.
I had hoped that the rapidity of getting their first would have reaped some more online love...not so much.

Nevertheless, there's an interesting side note to the Dave Eggers selection.  Eggers will obviously be in Telluride to schmooze and sign the poster and the press release says he will be honored by the UCLA film school in the course of the weekend's activities...but here's the intriguing thing...Dave Eggers also has film bona fides.  He was the screenwriter for 2009's "Where the Wild Things Are" and "Away We Go" (starring Jon Krasinski and Maya Rudolph.  His novel "Zeithoun" has reportedly been optioned by director Jonathan Demme and if you check his IMDb page you'll find that he has provided the "story" for "Promised Land".

"Promised Land"???  Wait.  Isn't that the Gus Van Sant directed (TFF in 1995-"Elephant" and 2003-"To Die For"), Matt Damon and Jon Krasinski co-written and co-starring film being distributed by frequent Telluride participant Focus Features that The Playlist has reported could well be ready for a fall film fest debut?  Here's The Playlist post:

Yes to all...

So does that mean "Promised Land" is suddenly a lock for TFF #39?  No...but it does make me suspect it has a much better shot at being there than it seemed to have yesterday.

"Promised Land's" IMDb page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2091473/

AND...maybe there is a continuing connection with/to Maya Rudolph who shares three children with Paul Thomas Anderson who also happens to be directing a film with some buzz about it.  You know..."The Master".

Last year my grand conspiracy theory was that George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon might all three show up in Telluride and have an "Oceans" movie reunion while their respective films ("Descendants", "Ides of March, "Moneyball", and "We Bought a Zoo") all played...

O'TOOLE BIDS FAREWELL

News yesterday via an announcement that I believe originally appeared at Playbill.com that legendary actor Peter O'Toole has chosen to retire from the profession.  O'Toole was a 2002 Tributee at Telluride and the last of his 8 Oscar nominations was for "Venus" which appeared in 2006 at TFF #33.  O'Toole's 8 nominations without a win is reportedly the longest streak of acting noms without a win in the history f the Academy.

O'Toole was also nominated for:

1983: My Favorite Year
1981: The Stunt Man
1973: The Ruling Class
1970: Goodbye Mr. Chips
1969: The Lion in Winter
1965: Becket
1963: Lawrence of Arabia

O'Toole was interviewed by Roger Ebert in Telluride in 2002 as a part of the Tribute ceremony and Ebert tweeted the link to that story yesterday.  Here it is:

O'Toole's IMDb page is here:

Personally, I am partial to his performances in "My Favorite Year" and "The Lion in Winter".

I'M BACK

Confirmation came yesterday afternoon that I/The Blog have been accredited as an honest to God "journalist" for the 39th Telluride Film Festival.  This is my second year to get the yellow lanyard that comes with accreditation.

This year I was able to get confirmation a full month earlier than last year.  It will be interesting to see if that makes some difference.  I felt like last year that I might have missed out on some material from the fest and from distributors because of the late accreditation.

Also, last year,  there were no party invites...so maybe that changes this year.  Fingers crossed!

Have a good weekend, Everyone!

More later...

Good Morning America, How Are You?  (Thanks, Arlo!)

WHERE WE STAND:

Oscar nominations will be announced one week from tomorrow and if The Clearinghouse metric is correct, the following statements would be true…

There would be 7 or 8 Best Picture nominees and they would be (in order of likelihood): The Artist, The Descendants, The Help, War Horse, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball and maybe The Tree of Life.

War Horse has been weakened and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Ides of March and Bridesmaids have all improved.

Among Telluride #38 films, the metric suggests that:

The Artist will have 11 nominations; more than any other picture and maybe the ONLY film with double digit Oscar nominations this year (though it appears increasingly likely that Hugo will have 10):  Picture, Actor, Supporting Actress, Director, Original Screenplay, Editing, Cinematography, Art Direction, Costumes, Original Score and Makeup.

The Descendants will have five nominations with an outside shot at two others.  Nominations for: Picture, Actor, Supporting Actress, Director and Adapted Screenplay.  Possibles for Editing and Cinematography.

Surprisingly, the next most potentially nominated TFF #38 film may be Albert Nobbs.  I liked it a lot (you can read my review for The Playlist from T-ride here: http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/telluride_11_review_albert_nobbs_glenn_close_mia_wasikowska  ), but many critics were not bowled over by it.  Nevertheless, as it stands this morning, my analysis suggests three nominations for Actress, Song and Makeup with a strong possibility for an additional nomination for Supporting Actress.

Pina looks to be dual nominated as Best Foreign Language Film and Best Documentary.

Shame and A Separation each look to get a single nomination and a possible second nod as well.  For Shame, Fassbender looks pretty solid for Best Actor and Carey Mulligan has an outside shot at a Supporting Actress nod.  For A Separation, a virtual certain nomination as Best Foreign Language Film and a possible Original Screenplay nom.

Single nominations are likely for We Need to Talk About Kevin (Swinton/Actress) and In Darkness and Le Havre, both for Foreign Language Film.

Films with outside shots but NOT expected to be nominated are A Dangerous Method in Best Supporting Actor and Art Direction and Footnote as Best Foreign Language Film.

All told, as of this morning, The FAC says 26 nominations for Telluride 2011 with another 8 possibilities and that does not include any of the “short” categories: Live Short, Animated Short and Documentary Short where T-ride will almost certainly add a couple of additional nominations.

For a festival that has seemed likely to max out at about two dozen nominations for most of the season, the end result is looking rosier and could (and I stress “could”) end up close to last year’s  30+ nominations.

Tomorrow we’ll look at the latest rankings for the BIG 4 categories in detail one week away from Announcement morning.

GOLDEN GLOBES IN THE REARVIEW…

Last night’s Golden Globes results are listed below:

Song: Masterpiece/Madonna et. al./W.E.
Score: Ludovic Bource/The Artist
Screenplay: Woody Allen/Midnight in Paris
Direction: Martin Scorsese/Hugo
 Foreign Language: A Separation
Animated: Adventures of Tintin
Supporting Actress: Octavia Spencer/The Help
Supporting Actor: Christopher Plummer/Beginners
Actress (Comedy or Musical): Michele Williams/My Week with Marilyn
Actor: (Comedy or Musical): Jean Dujardin/The Artist
Actress (Drama): Meryl Streep/The Iron Lady
Actor (Drama): George Clooney/The Descendants
Film (Comedy or Musical): The Artist
Film (Drama): The Descendants

Telluride finished the night with 6 Globes.

The Breakdown:
The Artist-3
The Descendants-2

One each for The Help, W.E., Midnight in Paris, Hugo, Tintin, Beginners, My Week with Marilyn,  A Separation and The Iron Lady.

Surprises?  No big ones.  Maybe the song choice or Tintin…

Bumps/Fails?  Since the Oscar nomination ballots are in, obviously no affect there.  Williams and Streep maybe got a little PR boost in their contest with Viola Davis.  The Artist looks like the film to beat.

A look tomorrow at the Oscar breakdown and more "below the line" Oscar info.

Tech Categories Examined/The Artist/Shame/Separation/Kevin/Awards and Oscars

Good Morning on this Thursday...

Here's a Film Awards Clearinghouse Extra

TECH CATEGORIES (AND MORE) EXAMINED

Among the items for this Thursday’s blog, I thought I’d jump into a breakdown of the “down ballot” categories for this year’s Oscars before we get to the end of the year and try to get a sense of the lay of the land in terms of what might be expected for total Oscar noms.  I do plan to do at least one more big analysis of the Big 8 categories before we see the calendar turn over to 2012.  I took a quick measure of these categories from predictions publicly posted by Sasha Stone at Awards Daily, Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter, Kris Tapley of Incontention.com, Film Misery and Film Experience.  So with that in mind…

FILM EDITING
This category often aligns with Best Picture nominations.  Heaviest favorites are: Moneyball, The Artist and War Horse.  Hugo is next likeliest followed by Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and a little love for Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

CINEMATOGRAPHY
Out front are: Hugo, War Horse, The Artist and The Tree of Life.  Dragon Tattoo has the best shot at the 5th slot (at least for now, among these 5 Oscarologists).

ART DIRECTION
Out front are: The Artist, Hugo and Harry Potter/Deathly Hollows.  Also in the mix: War Horse.  Battling for the last spot: Tinker, Tailor, J. Edgar, Tree of Life and The Help.

COSTUME
Out front are: The Artist, Hugo, and Jane Eyre.  Also in play are: War Horse, Anonymous, W.E. and Tinker Tailor.

ORIGINAL SCORE
Out front are: The Artist, War Horse, Adventures of TinTin.  Also in play: Hugo, Extremely Loud.  Possibles: Moneyball, Tinker Tailor.

ORIGINAL SONG
Out front is: The Help.  Also in play are: The Muppets (twice), Captain America and Albert Nobbs (wouldn’t it be weird if THIS is where Glenn Close gets nominated instead of Best Actress???  It could happen!)

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
Out Front are: A Separation, In Darkness.  Also in play are: Le Havre and Where Do We Go Now.  Possibles: Pina, Footnote.

ANIMATED FEATURE
Out front is: Rango.  Also in play are: Kung Fu Panda 2, Adventures of TinTin, Puss in Boots, Arthur Christmas.  Possibles: Rio, Cars 2.

MAKEUP
Out front are:  J. Edgar, The Iron Lady.  That’s the entire consensus here for now and even it isn’t terribly strong.

VISUAL EFFECTS
OUT FRONT ARE: Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Hugo, Harry Potter/Deathly Hollows and Transformers.  Also in play: The Tree of Life

SOUND EDITING
Out front are: War Horse, Adventures of TinTin, and Transformers.  Also in play: Super 8 and Rise of the Planet of the Apes.  Possible: Hugo

SOUND MIXING
Out Front is: Transformers.  Also in play: War Horse, Adventures of TinTin, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Super 8, and The Tree of Life.

(Documentaries, Animated Shorts, Live Action Shorts...later)

Ultimately, when taken with the results of the latest analysis of the Big 8 categories (posted on Nov. 23before the NBR, NYFCC, Gotham and Indy Spirit announcements) this is the snapshot of the overall Oscar race at this point,

The Artist would lead all films with 10 nominations.  War Horse would have 8 with another 2 possible.  The Descendants sits at 5 nominations in the Big 8 categories and not a single other nomination is likely.  Other possible big players include Extremely Loud with 4 noms and 3 others possible.  Also in the 4 nomination club are: TinTin, Moneyball (with another 2 possible).

Then there’s Hugo which was sitting at 2 possibles (Picture, Director) in the Big 8 categories just two weeks ago but is now considered a much stronger challenger.  I expect that it will be among the probable nominees when I crunch the numbers in a few days and not in just those two categories.  I expect it to make a play in Adapted Screenplay as well.  Add that to the 4 nominations and 2 possibles among the tech categories and Hugo has the potential to be the most nominated film.  More stunning is that none of the nominations would be in any acting category.

Finally, the Telluride effect…I’ve been saying (virtually since the Festival came to a conclusion) that this year would NOT provide the same number of nominations as last year (or 2009 either).  That continues to look like the case.  At this point (including Foreign noms) TFF #38 projects to 22 total nominations with another 4 possible.  That does NOT include the doc and shorts categories…which could nudge the needle closer to 2009-like numbers.

THE ARTIST

As you can see from the above entry, The Artist is holding on quite well, thank you.  It continues to have considerable press attention as well.  Below are some of this week's links to stories centered on The Artist

Good Monday morning to all.  I hope you're recovering from food induced stupor.

OCCUPY!

THE ARTIST

"The Artist" opened on the coasts this Thanksgiving weekend and will open wider and wider as we approach Christmas.  The black and white silent film that stars French actors that most Americans have never heard of still sits well on my latest FAC charts (check out the Nov. 24 post) looking good for nominations in 5 of the Big 8 categories (Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actress and Original Screenplay).

Also, in "Artist" related news, I caught the Hazanaziciuus/Dujardin  collaborations that are the "OSS 117" films over the weekend.  "Cairo: Nest of Spies" : Good "Lost in Rio": Not so much.  They're both available on Netflix Instant.

Here's your rundown of "Artist" related posts/articles from the last 4 days>

SHAME

"Shame" continues to challenge for awards recognition in spite of its NC-17 rating from the MPAA.  It's no secret that the Steve McQueen drama will need some fuel from winning some serious critic's awards love over the next month or so if it has any chances of Oscar noticing it.  We'll get the first glimpse of that in the next few days as The New York Film Critic's Circle and the National Board of Review reveal their choices (after a somewhat entertaining tussle over which entity would get to be first and what films will have and won't have been screened).  Stay tuned for those results.

Here's this week's "Shame" news:

The New York Times talks to McQueen and star Michael Fassbender:

A SEPARATION

One of the best films at this year's TFF was Asghar Farhadi's beautifully constructed "A Separation".  I've got it in my #occupyoscar stable for Original Screenplay consideration.  The film had a pretty good week as it was named Best Film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.  The Hollywood Reporter has that story:

And a very interesting piece from ScreenDaily that talks about rumors that the Academy wants to move the Oscars up to January in 2013 and suggests that, if true, Telluride (and Toronto, Venice and New York) could become even more important in terms of Awards seasons.  Is that even possible?  Check it and see:
