Cannes Adds Classics and Docs About Films / Some Films Are Off the Telluride Table / Re-visiting the 29th Telluride Film Festival 2002

It's Monday...welcome back...

CANNES ADDS CLASSICS AND DOCS ABOUT FILM

The 70th Cannes Film Fest seems to have finished all of their lineup announcements this past week with the addition of classic films and documentaries.  In as far as Telluride is concerned, the documentaries likely provide more ground for potential TFF programming.  Two jumped out at me as interesting and, perhaps, TFF possibilities:  Filmworker focuses on the story of an assistant for Stanley Kubrick and Becoming Cary Grant takes a look at the life of the icon with a focus on his use of LSD.

Though you wouldn't expect to see them at Telluride, I was struck of the inclusion of Blow Up, A River Runs Through It, All That Jazz and Belle du Jour among the classics selections

The Film Stage lays out the details here.

SOME FILMS ARE OFF THE TELLURIDE TABLE

Brie Larson in The Glass Castle (via Collider)

A couple of films that I have been keeping my eye on as potential TFF #44 titles went by the wayside this week as they were dated for release in windows that make TFF #44 either impossible or extremely unlikely;  Jason Reitman's newest collaboration with Diablo Cody is headed for release in April of 2018.  Tully has been on my radar simply because it's from the creators behind 2007's Juno. Reitman has had significant run through Telluride over the past decade with Juno (07), Up in the Air (09) and Labor Day (13) but his Young Adult (11) and Men Women and Children (14) did not play the fest.

Details including a suggestion that Tully might play Toronto (and the dating of the new Paul Thomas Anderson film) can be found in this post from The Playlist.

Meanwhile, Destin Daniel Cretton's The Glass Castle starring Brie Larson has been announced for Aug. 11th , making it out of play for T-ride.  It's been on my list as the twosome of Cretton and Larson were paired in the critical success Short Term 12 in 2013 and also as a result of Larson's Best Actress win for 2015's Room.

Reports of the dating for release are here from Variety and here from The Wrap.

RE-VISITING THE 29TH TELLURIDE FILM FESTIVAL 2002

In an effort to provide a history of the Telluride Film Festival I continue to use the wayback machine and take a look back at past Telluride Film Festivals.  Utilizing past programs, yearbooks and conversations with past attendees, I have undertaken to supplement the History section of the TFF official website.  The website includes links to TFF programs dating from last year's fest back to the 33rd TFF in 2006.

Beginning a few weeks past with TFF 32, MTFB is attempting to fill in the gaps back to the beginning.  In addition to supplementing the official website, it is my intent that this stroll down memory lane will eventually take the place of the "Selected TFF History" page here at MTFB.  Obviously, it is not going to be a rapid process...that said...

The 29th Telluride Film Festival took place form Aug. 30-Sept. 2, 2002.

Ten Bets 2014 #2/News from Wells/National Gallery Release/Roger and Peter

Welcome to Independence Day everyone from Great Barrington, MA.  By the time you read this I will already be selling art at the 13th Annual Berkshires Art Festival.  If you're nearby, come by Tent #48 and say hello...and buy some art!

TEN BETS 2014 #2

Here's your second edition of "Ten Bets" for films that I expect to appear at the 41st Telluride Film Festival. Last weeks list looked like this:

10) Salt of the Earth (Wenders)
9) Winter Sleep (Ceylan)
8) Red Army (Polsky)
7) Coming Home (Yimou)
6) Foxcatcher (Miller)
5) The Roosevelts (Burns)
4) Leviathan (Zvyagintsev)
3) Birdman (Inarritu)
2) Two Days, One Night (Dardennes)
1) Mr. Turner (Leigh)

After a week of tracking any Telluride news/rumors, here's your new "Ten Bets" (also, see the next story below):

10) Coming Home
9) Winter Sleep
8) Red Army
7) The Roosevelts
6) Queen of the Desert
5) Foxcatcher
4) Leviathan
3) Two Days, One Night
2) Mr. Turner
1) Birdman

NEWS FROM WELLS

"Birdman" trailer via YouTube

Jeffrey Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere posted a Telluride piece on Wednesday.  He claims that Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Birdman" is a Telluride lock...which I have suspected for over a year.  Also a lock, according to Wells: Werner Herzog's "Queen of the Desert" which has also been anticipated here, as long as it was finished.  Wells also says that Paul Thomas Anderson's "Inherent Vice" and David Fincher's "Gone Girl" are locked for the New York Fest and necessarily pre-empted for T-ride.

The really interesting tidbit is the possibility of a Telluride presentation of Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar".  Up until last year, I would have thought this unlikely in the extreme but with the success of Telluride landing Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" last year...I could believe this.  I'm not there yet...but I don't rule it out either.

Wells also has a couple of comments about the Toronto Film Fests ultimatum vis-a-vis Telluride and you can find the entire piece here:

NATIONAL GALLERY RELEASE

IndieWire reports that Frederick Wiseman's "National Gallery" a documentary about London's National Gallery has a stateside release date for November.  The Telluride possibility will be released on Nov. 5th. Take a look at the post here:

And in the midst of all the hoopla about the release of the Roger Ebert doc "Life Itself" (which I was just sure would play last year at TFF #40)  came this re-tweet/re-post of Ebert's Telluride interview with Peter O'Toole.  I had to post the link:

Peter O'Toole/Nomination Hangover/Awards Circuit Says/Oscar Talk/Inside Llewyn Interviews/Winslet on Labor Day

Good Monday Everyone...

PETER O'TOOLE

One of the great regrets that I have had about my Telluride experiences over this past 8 years is that we didn't start attending until 2006 which meant that we missed the 2002 tribute to Peter O'Toole.  O'Toole was the last of that Richard Harris, Richard Burton triumvirate and a tremendous story teller.  He was always fascinating whenever you could catch him in an interview.  In 2006, we saw his performance in Telluride in "Venus" and marveled at how fine an actor he remained that late in his lifer/career.  It is a crime he never won the Oscar he was nominated 8 times for.  Fortunately for us, we have so many of his performances on film to watch for generations.

Peace, Mr. O'Toole, peace...

NOMINATION HANGOVER

Last week was a little dizzying with Screen Actors Guild nominations and Golden Globe nominations.  One thing that I didn't note about the GG noms on Thursday was the incredible leap in the number of total GG nominations for Telluride films from last year.  As I did note on Thursday, there were 25 nominations this year for TFF #40 films plus an additional 2 for TFF #39 films.  Compare that to the results from the recent past:

2012: 10 GG nominations, led by 5 for "Argo".  Of course you could add the nominations for "The Hunt" and Greta Gerwig for "Frances Ha" could be added to the 2012 total.
2011: 19 GG nominations led by 6 for "The Artist"
2010: 16 GG nominations led by 7 for "The King's Speech"
2009: 11 GG nominations led by 6 for "Up in the Air"

The "average" number of Golden Globe nominations for Telluride films over the past 4 years has been 14.

So, you can see that TFF #40 is an astounding jump in numbers of Globe nominations.  It's nearly double the average.

Now, I don't think that the number of Golden Globe nominations really tell us anything about the quality of TFF from year to year.  I mean, it is The Globes and as any number of people in the business have noted, The HFPA has an agenda that sometimes rewards names over quality.  Nonetheless, the jump from 10 last year to 27 this year is astounding.

I attribute this circumstance to the 40th anniversary lure of this year's fest and the phenomenal programming that the staff at TFF did to make the anniversary very, very special.

And I'm going to go ahead and make a solid prediction for Oscar nominations.  This year, in an amazing coincidence, TFF #40 films will earn exactly 40 nominations...and there will be 2-4 for TFF #39 films as well.

AWARDS CIRCUIT SAYS

I recently ran through the Oscar nomination predictions from Oscar prognosticator Clayton Davis from his site Awards Circuit to see where he puts the films from TFF #40 (and #39) in this years race.  Here's the results of what Davis was saying:

"12 Years a Slave"-11 nominations: Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay, Production Design, Cinematography, Costumes, Film Editing, Score.

"Gravity"-9 nominations: Best Picture, Director, Actress, Cinematography, Film Editing, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Visual Effects, Score.
"Nebraska"-5 nominations: Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay.

"Inside Llewyn Davis"- 7 nominations: Best Picture, Director, Supporting actor, Original Screenplay, Production Design, Cinematography, Sound Mixing.

"Nebraska"-5 nominations: Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay.

"All is Lost"-4 nominations: Best Actor, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Original Song.

Single nominations for:

"Blue is the Warmest Color"-Adapted Screenplay
"The Wind Rises: Animated Feature
"Tim's Vermeer": Documentary Feature
"Prisoners"-Cinematography
"The Invisible Woman": Costumes

Also from TFF #39:
"Stories We Tell": Documentary Feature
"The Hunt": Foreign Language Film
"Wadjda": Foreign Language Film

Totals: 41 nominations for TFF #40 films and an additional 3 for TFF #39 films.

Venetian News/Best of the Week

Good Saturday to All!

VENETIAN NEWS

Venice Film Festival stories have burst onto the web the last 24 hours and they may tell us some things about our appointment with film in Telluride in 7 weeks.

First...the jury.  Venice's jury was announced yesterday and you can get the entire scope here from The Hollywood Reporter:
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/venice-film-festival-jury-matteo-garrone-349032

The Telluride-centirc news here is that Matteo Garrone and Pablo Trapero are both jurors and I'm concluding that that means that their films are very likely off the table for Telluride.  For Garrone and his Cannes prize winning "Reality" that's a fairly big conclusion.  "Reality's" Telluride profile was substantial: Cannes, past T-ride connection ("Gomorrah").  I had also had Trapero's "Elefante Blanco" (White Elephant) as a T-ride possible...but both films now go off of consideration.

Second, The Playlist reports this morning that Italian newspaper La Republica is saying they have the lowdown on the Venice lineup...which, if true, might narrow the Telluride field somewhat.  Regular readers of this space know that there is usually a 2-4 film overlap between Venice and T-ride so an actual list of what's playing in Italy would give us some clues about what could be in and what could be out.

The Playlist report says that high profile pics "The Master", "To the Wonder", "The Place Beyond the Pines" and "All You Need is Love" are all going to be at Venice.  Also mentioned "Anna Karenina", "Something in the Air" and  "The Company you Keep".

Check the entire story here:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/italian-press-report-malicks-to-the-wonder-pta-s-the-master-anna-karenina-more-in-venice-line-up-20120714

I might point out that The Playlist does admit some skepticism...and with good reason and flat out says that "The Master" may forgo festivals altogether.

Meanwhile, third, Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere posted his musings about Telluride, Venice, Toronto and New York.  Most electrifying in that post was this:

"I don't think anyone on my level is going to have anything figured out until early August, but let's do some guessing. Not about Toronto, which is Walmart, but Telluride and New York. I can never figure out Venice.

Look at that list and begin to salivate my friends.  I hope he's somewhere close to correct AND that Telluride lands a majority of these.

Here's the full post from Wells:
If you read the comments, you'll see "Gort2" included there as well as good back and forth about whether "To the Wonder" will or won't be in Venice.

DAVE EGGERS IS YOUR POSTER ARTIST

Per this release from the Telluride Film Festival Press Office:

TFF Shop

TELLURIDE FILM FESTIVAL SELECTS DAVE EGGERS
AS ITS 2012 FESTIVAL POSTER ARTIST

July 9, 2012

BERKELEY, CA – Telluride Film Festival (August 31 – September 3, 2012), presented by National Film Preserve LTD., proudly announces it has selected American writer, editor, publisher and philanthropist Dave Eggers as its 39th Telluride Film Festival poster artist.

Eggers will attend the 39th Telluride Film Festival over Labor Day weekend to present his poster design to the public and hold a poster signing for festival guests. A special reception will also be held to honor Eggers, sponsored by the UCLA School of Theatre, Film and Television.

Dave Eggers began working as a freelance graphic designer out of college and then moved in to writing and editing at Salon.com. He founded Mightmagazine while also writing a comic strip for SF Weekly. He is the best-selling author of numerous books including his first work, a lightly fictionalized memoir, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius (2000), a national bestseller and finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction. You Shall Know Our Velocity (2002) was Eggers’ first published novel; an expanded and revised version was released as Sacrament in 2003. What is the What was a finalist for the 2006 National Book Critics Circle Award and won France’s Prix Medici. In 2009, the Council on American-Islamic Relations presented Eggers with the “Courage In Media” Award for his book Zeitoun. Film director Jonathan Demme has optioned the book, which has also won the American Book Award and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. Eggers co-wrote two screenplays in 2009: Away We Go and Where The Wild Things Are. His latest novel, A Hologram for the King, was released in 2012 to critical acclaim.

Eggers is the founder and editor of McSweeney’s, an independent publishing house based in San Francisco built to help emerging and underappreciated writers find their voice. The publishing house produces a daily humor website and publishes Timothy McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern, the Believer, Lucky Peach, Wholphin, Grantland Quarterly, and a growing selection of books under various imprints.

In 2002 Eggers co-founded 826 Valencia, a nonprofit writing and tutoring center for youth in the Mission District of San Francisco. The program offers free tutoring, English as a Second Language classes, writing workshops, summer camps, publications projects and other services to kids ages six to 18. Local communities have since opened sister 826 centers in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Ann Arbor, Seattle, Boston and Washington, DC.
A native of Chicago, Eggers now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and two children.
"Dave is well-known for his terrific literary works, but most people don’t know he was trained as a painter, and when he was starting out as a writer, he worked as an illustrator and graphic designer. The fact that he is a gifted visual artist is a bit of a secret we want to share with the world,” comments Julie Huntsinger, Telluride Film Festival co-director. “Dave is talented, big-hearted, smart and remarkably well-rounded. We’re overjoyed to have him join the Telluride Film Festival community as our poster artist this year. Our audiences will be delighted with the fresh take he has created for the artwork of TFF 39.

“I was thrilled to be asked to do the poster for this year’s Telluride Film Festival,” said Dave Eggers. “I decided to make the poster look a bit like the national parks posters from back in the day, and to go with a light, almost washed-out palette. That’s how I think of Colorado in the summer: sun-drenched and with incredible color combinations. From there, it just seemed appropriate to have a bear filming an elk.”

Dave Eggers joins a prestigious list of artists who have shared their talents with the Telluride Film Festival. Past poster artists include Ed Ruscha, John Mansfield, Julian Schnabel, Dottie Attie, Doug and Mike Starn, David Lance Goines, Chuck Jones, David Salle, Alexis Smith, Jim Dine, Seymour Chwast, Frederic Amat, Francesco Clemente, Dave McKean, Gary Larson, Chip Kidd, John Canemaker, Mark Stock, Laurie Anderson, William Wegman, Ralph Eggleston and Maira Kalman.

39th Telluride Film Festival passes are now available at www.telluridefilmfestival.org.

40th Anniversary of the Telluride Film Festival
Next year Telluride Film Festival will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary, scheduled for August 29 – September 2, 2013.  To commemorate this special occasion an additional day has been added to the usual four-day Festival, making room for a five-day bounty of special programming and festivities. Passes will be available for purchase beginning in March 2013.

EGGERS AND TELLURIDE

The news release hit my email yesterday at 11:44 AM CDT.  I had a post up at 12:02 PM CDT.  The news from the Telluride Film Festival Press Office was that author Dave Eggers had been selected as the poster artist for TFF#39...and the poster was up and running...

I think I had the story up first anywhere on the web...by a ways...

The frustration, such as it was, when it came to re-tweeting/re-posting...nada...zip...zilch.  As the story rolled through the afternoon all of the movie blog type outlets you'd expect got it posted and it looks like Anne Thompson's "Thompson on Hollywood" got the majority of re-production.  Good for her.
I had hoped that the rapidity of getting their first would have reaped some more online love...not so much.

Nevertheless, there's an interesting side note to the Dave Eggers selection.  Eggers will obviously be in Telluride to schmooze and sign the poster and the press release says he will be honored by the UCLA film school in the course of the weekend's activities...but here's the intriguing thing...Dave Eggers also has film bona fides.  He was the screenwriter for 2009's "Where the Wild Things Are" and "Away We Go" (starring Jon Krasinski and Maya Rudolph.  His novel "Zeithoun" has reportedly been optioned by director Jonathan Demme and if you check his IMDb page you'll find that he has provided the "story" for "Promised Land".

"Promised Land"???  Wait.  Isn't that the Gus Van Sant directed (TFF in 1995-"Elephant" and 2003-"To Die For"), Matt Damon and Jon Krasinski co-written and co-starring film being distributed by frequent Telluride participant Focus Features that The Playlist has reported could well be ready for a fall film fest debut?  Here's The Playlist post:

Yes to all...

So does that mean "Promised Land" is suddenly a lock for TFF #39?  No...but it does make me suspect it has a much better shot at being there than it seemed to have yesterday.

"Promised Land's" IMDb page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2091473/

AND...maybe there is a continuing connection with/to Maya Rudolph who shares three children with Paul Thomas Anderson who also happens to be directing a film with some buzz about it.  You know..."The Master".

Last year my grand conspiracy theory was that George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon might all three show up in Telluride and have an "Oceans" movie reunion while their respective films ("Descendants", "Ides of March, "Moneyball", and "We Bought a Zoo") all played...

O'TOOLE BIDS FAREWELL

News yesterday via an announcement that I believe originally appeared at Playbill.com that legendary actor Peter O'Toole has chosen to retire from the profession.  O'Toole was a 2002 Tributee at Telluride and the last of his 8 Oscar nominations was for "Venus" which appeared in 2006 at TFF #33.  O'Toole's 8 nominations without a win is reportedly the longest streak of acting noms without a win in the history f the Academy.

O'Toole was also nominated for:

1983: My Favorite Year
1981: The Stunt Man
1973: The Ruling Class
1970: Goodbye Mr. Chips
1969: The Lion in Winter
1965: Becket
1963: Lawrence of Arabia

O'Toole was interviewed by Roger Ebert in Telluride in 2002 as a part of the Tribute ceremony and Ebert tweeted the link to that story yesterday.  Here it is:

O'Toole's IMDb page is here:

Personally, I am partial to his performances in "My Favorite Year" and "The Lion in Winter".

I'M BACK

Confirmation came yesterday afternoon that I/The Blog have been accredited as an honest to God "journalist" for the 39th Telluride Film Festival.  This is my second year to get the yellow lanyard that comes with accreditation.

This year I was able to get confirmation a full month earlier than last year.  It will be interesting to see if that makes some difference.  I felt like last year that I might have missed out on some material from the fest and from distributors because of the late accreditation.

Also, last year,  there were no party invites...so maybe that changes this year.  Fingers crossed!

Have a good weekend, Everyone!

O'Toole Bids Farewell/Sundance Selects/New Anna Poster/Our Friends in Toronto

Good Wednesday To All!

SUNDANCE SELECTS

This week I'm wrapping up my stroll through film production/distribution companies that have been a part of Telluride's film festival recently.  Today's specimen is a relative newcomer: Sundance Selects.  Sundance Selects is listed at IMDb as having been created in 2008 so they are very young and have a short timeline to assess...but it has been a list of distributed films with many TFF films in the last two years.  TFF films from Sundance Selects include:

2011: Into the Abyss, Goodbye First Love, The Kid with a Bike, The Forgiveness of Blood, Pina
2010: Tabloid, The Princess of Montpensier

Sundance had a bare presence in 2010 (and with two TFF stalwarts at that: Errol Morris and Bertrand Tavernier) and then exploded in 2011 with 5 films.  So what's in their stable for the rest of 2012?

Christian Mungiu's "Beyond the Hills"
Brandon Cronenberg's (David's son) "Antiviral"
Abbas Kiarostami's "Like Someone in Love"
Ken Loach's "The Angel's Share"
Ben Wheatley's "Sightseers"
Walter Salles' "On the Road"

All of which played in some program at Cannes in May.

From this list come three pretty good suspects: "On the Road" ( Salles history with Telluride: 1998, 2004) "Beyond the Hills" (Mungiu in Telluride in 2007) and "Like Someone in Love" (Kiarostami in Telluride in 1997).

You'll see that "Road" and "Hills" are both on this week's "Ten Bets" list and "Like Someone in Love" on this year's program wouldn't surprise me either.

Of the other three Ken Loach's "The Angel's Share" is the most likely fourth possibility.  Its critical reception at Cannes wasn't flashy but it was respectable.  As to "Antiviral" and "Sightseers"; their lukewarm/negative critical response leaves me thinking that they're not likely to be seen at The Chuck or anywhere else on Labor Day weekend in the San Juans.

Tomorrow we'll end the series of company profiles with some odds and ends from both America and Europe.

NEW ANNA POSTER

Rope of Silicon linked us to the new poster for Joe Wright's "Anna Karenina".  Here's the poster:

And here's the link to the ROS story:

AND OUR FRIENDS IN TORONTO

The Toronto International Film Festival is set this year for Sept. 6-16.  Unlike the Venice Fest, which usually has a small overlap of films with Telluride, Toronto (because of its massive size, geographic location and where it is on the calendar) has had a significant overlap with Telluride.  If you don't believe me...look at their new festival trailer and you'll see recent Telluride guests featured prominently as they also ended up in Canada...

Did you notice Mr. Clooney, Ms. Close,Ms. Wilde, Ms. Garner, Ms. Knightley, Mr. Cronenberg, Mr. Mortensen, Mr. Hazanavicius, Mr. Fassbender?

Repsectively that's; "The Descendants" (well Ides of March too), "Albert Nobbs", "Butter", "A Dangerous Method", "The Artist" and "Shame" all touted by Toronto's trailer and all having appeared in Telluride beforehand last year.

And it's a cool trailer.
