THE DISTRIBUTORS 2018: SPECIAL HOUSES

I'm taking a quick look at specialty distribution companies that have had some Telluride successes over the past few years each of which has a film that stands a shot at making the Telluride lineup:

Magnolia

2006- Severance
2007- Terror's Advocate, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, Redacted
2012- The Hunt, A Royal Affair
2015- Viva

Oscilloscope

2008- Kisses
2011- We Need to Talk About Kevin
2016- Lost in Paris

Strand Releasing

2010- Cameraman
2011- Bonsai
2012- Paradise: Love
2013- The Missing Picture
2014- Dancing Arabs
2016- Mifune: The Last Samurai

Here's what they have:

Magnolia has Cannes Palme D'or winner and critical success Shoplifters.  I actually think this film has a good chance to make TFF #45.  So much so that if I had a #11 on today's Ten Bets, Shoplifters would be there.

Oscilloscope has Margarethe Von Trotter's Searching for Ingmar Bergman which also seems like a good fit for TFF.  It also played at Cannes.

Strand Releasing's best shot appears to be Cannes entry Sorry Angel.  Of the three films I'm looking at, it seems like the least likely but it's not an impossibility.

Chances:

Shoplifters- 45%
Searching for Ingmar Bergman- 40%
Sorry Angel- 20%

Monday, a look at films that seem like Telluride possibles that still lack a U.S. distributor.

Have a good weekend!

Back in the Game / Distribution: Strand Releasing and Focus Features / A Couple of Points of Passenger Interest

Welcome to Wednesday my friends...

BACK IN THE GAME

Well, for the fifth consecutive year the Telluride Film Festival has been gracious enough to grant Michael's Telluride Film Blog status as an actual journalistic endeavor.  I got word a couple of days ago that I had been accredited for TFF #43.

It never fails to blow my mind that MTFB gets accepted in the same breath as Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Sasha Stone's Awards Daily and others.  Journalists and outlets that I read studiously and respect tremendously and I get to play like I belong in that pool for four days a year.

It's cool.

Thanks to the Telluride Film Festival and its directors Tom Luddy and Julie Huntsinger as well as P.R. Chief Shannon Mitchell and P.R. Coordinator Richard Parkin.

DISTRIBUTION: STRAND RELEASING AND FOCUS FEATURES

As we come down the home stretch of our review of distributors who have had the largest presence at Telluride over the last decade or so, we turn our attention to companies who have had a spotty, but serious record of inclusion.  These are outfits that are sometime players that you always need to account for because they show up just often enough that you'd be a fool to overlook them each year as you try to puzzle out possible lineup choices.

It's this type of organization we'll talk about through Friday and then next week, we'll turn our attention to overseas production companies.

Today, however, we look at distributors Strand Releasing and Focus Features.

STRAND RELEASING

Strand started showing up at the SHOW in 2010 and ran off appearances for five straight years before missing last year's SHOW.

2010- Cameraman: The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff
2011- Bonsai
2012- Paradise: Love
2013- The Missing Picture
2014- Dancing Arabs

In 2015, Strand failed to make the TFF #42 lineup.  I thought a year ago that there was some possibility of seeing Cemetery of Splendour but, as you know, that did not happen.

Much like last year, at this point Strand seems to have only one possibility and that is Alain Guiraudie's Staying Vertical.  The film played in Cannes competition and drew fair reviews.  You may have noticed that I posted its poster in yesterday's dispatch.  My feeling right now is that it may be a borderline inclusion in the TFF #43 lineup.  Call its chances 55%.

FOCUS FEATURES

Meanwhile, As we turn to Focus Features we regard a distributor who has had a very sketchy Telluride relationship.  Only three films from them have appeared at T-ride since 2006.

2006- Catch a Fire
2012- Hyde Park on Hudson
2015- Suffragette

Now, I have to tell you that they impressed me last year in that they had the estimable Meryl Streep in Telluride in addition to director Sarah Gavron and writer Abi Morgan.  I also have to admit that I liked the film more than a good many others.  You may recall that in my post-SHOW ratings that The People had it ranked 12the of 14 films and The Professionals had it 12th of 13.  However, IMDb has it currently at 6.9, MetaCritic has it at 67 and Rotten Tomatoes at 73% s, in hindsight, though it didn't set the world on fire, it seems that the film actually came away in modestly good critical shape.

Still, Focus had to have believed or hoped for some awards season traction that never really materialized.

All of those factors will probably have some effect on the Focus decision about which film or films to submit to Telluride (if any) and Telluride's perspective on this films.

Nevertheless, Focus does have a few films that might merit consideration:

Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals
J. A. Bayona's A Monster Calls
Jeff Nichol's Loving
Colin Trevorrow's The Book of Henry

You could make a decent case for any of these.

Tom Ford's second film, Nocturnal Animals would seem to be highly desired by most of the big fall fests in light of the critical success of his first feature, A Single Man.  Additionally, it features Telluride regular (and MTFB "Usual Suspect) Laura Linney.

You could make a case for Jeff Nichol's Loving, as I have been since it screened at Cannes.  Decent reviews and a film that many in France thought was the film that had the most awards prospects of the Palme competition lineup.

J.A. Bayona's A Monster Calls hasn't necessarily seemed like a Telluride possibility to me until recently.  I, am higher on its prospects this week.  Been hearing a bit of buzz plus one its executive producers is T-ride regular (and another MTFB "Usual Suspect")  Bill Pohlad/River Road Entertainment.  Pohlad has also produced Telluride-screened features 12 Years a Slave, Wild, Into the Wild, Fur and Brokeback Mountain.

The longest shot of the four seems to me to be Treverrow's The Book of Henry.  It's notable Telluride connection is that it stars the young Jacob Trembay of last year's Telluride breakout film Room.

Assessing the chances for these films is complicated by Focus Features spotty T-ride record and the unknown about how their perception of the reception of Suffragette last year had colored their strategy for the fall.

Chances for each:

Loving 60%
A Monster Calls 50%
Nocturnal Animals 40%
The Book of Henry 30%

Tomorrow we'll look at Open Road and Zeitgeist.

A COUPLE OF POINTS OF PASSENGER INTEREST

Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence of Passengers via Teen Daily

A few days back I saw a brief blurb that there might some difficulties with a special effects firm and some late 2016 releases.  I kind of slapped in the back of my brain and moved on.

Then I ran across this post from Awards Circuit about the original story and how it could impact the Morten Tyldum film Passengers.

Now, I have mentioned Passengers briefly in the past and suggested that it might be an outside, outside shot to play Telluride because of Tyldum who directed The Imitation Game and seemed to have had a good time when he was there with that film in 2014.  Additionally, the presence of Jennifer Lawrence and her Oscar success (one win and four nominations since 2011) gave the sci-fi drama a bit more of a prestige factor.

The AC article also references the earlier piece from The Hollywood Reporter.

The bottom line is that Passengers could be delayed because of legal action involving this special effects outfit and, more to the point, Awards Circuit's article implies that it almost certainly bags the film for a possible Telluride play.

Now,  I'm not saying that AC is telling us that was in the cards...but it's really interesting speculation for them to come up with.  The actual quote from the piece goes, "...it's possible the producers planned a "Gravity" style campaign to drop the film at Telluride.  This news makes that plan somewhat unlikely now."

Makes you go...hmmmmmm.

The sfx firm is seeking a modification to the injunction to work on soon-to-be-released projects but who knows if that will be granted and how quickly.

I have linked the Awards Circuit and THR stories as well as Passengers IMDb page:

A Final Look at Distributors/"Miss You Already" Trailer/Final Note for Tuesday

Welcome Back from the weekend.  My apologies for the late post today but I got in late last night from Steamboat Springs, CO. after being there for an art show.  Now onto the business at hand.

A FINAL LOOK AT DISTRIBUTORS

STRAND RELEASING

Strand has been a consistent presence at Telluride over the past five years:

2010: Cameraman: The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff
2011: Bonsai
2012: Paradise: Love
2013: The Missing Picture
2014: A Borrowed Identity (Dancing Arabs)

This year their most likely player, and really the only film they list at IMDb that seems like a possible T-ride choice,  is from 2010 Cannes Palme d'Or ("Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives") winner Apichatpong Weerasethakul's "Cemetery of Splendor".  The film played this year at Cannes in the Un Certain Regard program and has been very well reviewed since. I put the chances of this film playing at Telluride at 40%.

OPEN ROAD

Open Road Films showed up with a splash at Telluride last year with Jon Stewart's directorial debut "Rosewater".  To the best of my ability to research, it was the first time Open Roads has made a play at Telluride.  2015 could be the second straight year to make the fest with, I think, four films that might make the grade again this year with four possible films that seem to be intriguing as Telluride potentials:

Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight" starring Michael Keaton among others.
John Hillcoat's "Triple Nine"
Oliver Stone's "Snowden" and
Barry Levinson's "Rock the Kasbah"

However...

Hillcoat was in Telluride in 2009 with "The Road" but "Triple 9" isn't set for release until March, 2016.

Stone was in Telluride in 1997 with "U-Turn".  I wonder if he might be talked into returning to Telluride for this film.

McCarthy's "Spotlight", about corruption with the Boston Catholic Church hierarchy, is among a half dozen films that are being rumored to open the Toronto Fest.

Levinson played Venice with Al Pacino in "The Humbling" in 2014.  Perhaps he does that again this year and then makes the flight to Telluride.

Chances:

"Spotlight" 40%
"Snowden" 30%
"Rock the Kasbah" 30%
"Tripe 9" 20%

ALCHEMY

Alchemy was present at Telluride last year with Madam Bovary from director Sophie Barthes in only the second year of their existence.  This season they have a couple of Cannes films in their larder that could show at The SHOW.

Both Nanni Moretti's "Mia Madre" and Yorgos Lanthimos' "The Lobster" made respectable splashes in competition at Cannes.  "Mia Madre" won the Ecumenical Jury Prize and "The Lobster" won a Jury Prize.  So either film could easily be on the T-ride programmers radar.

Chances for both films is at 35%

KINO LORBER

KL was at Telluride last year with "The Decent One".

Other Telluride plays include:

2013: "Manuscripts Don't Burn", La Maison de la Radio", Burning Bush"

Kino has the U.S. distribution for Cannes competit1on film, and again, a very well reviewed film, Zhangke Jia's "Mountains May Depart".  I currently have "Mountains" off of the "Ten Bets' list, but it appeared a week earlier at #9.  I think its chances are very good to make the T-ride lineup.  Put those chances at 60%.

That will conclude this year's review of possible Telluride distributors.  It's not a complete list of potential distributors (for example, "Trumbo" is at Bleecker Street, but they have no previous Telluride footprint and such a small catalogue of past films, evaluating it is impossible) but it's fairly exhaustive based on recent festivals and the films that are currently announced for probable release this year.

Tomorrow I'll begin a series of  posts about European production firms that have a significant history with films that have played Telluride and what that might tell us for T-ride 2015.

"MISS YOU ALREADY" TRAILER

"Miss You Already" trailer from YouTube

We have our first look at Catherine Hardwicke's "Miss You Already".  The film is in the hands of Roadside Attractions/Lionsgate and that is the biggest reason to take it seriously as a Telluride possible after Roadside's three film presence at the Fest.

Here's the story from The Playlist:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/watch-first-trailer-for-catherine-hardwickes-miss-you-already-starring-drew-barrymore-toni-collette-20150709

FINAL NOTE FOR TUESDAY

Cameron Bailey, the Artistic Director for Toronto's Film Fest tweeted cryptically yesterday:

Who decides? News tomorrow morning. .

Seems to me that we're going to hear some news from TIFF about who their programmers are.
TIFF should announce their first wave of films a week from today.

More tomorrow...

Adopt Films, Strand Releasing, A24/Count on Cousins/Wild Poster

Hello Wednesday...the Pattersons New York excursion continued yesterday with performances of "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder" and the revival of "Les Miserables".  Was a pretty good day and just a note: Ramin Karimloo is unbelievable as Jean Valjean in "Les Miz".

"Les Miserables" star Ramin Karimloo and some guy

We continue to look at distributors that have had a serious presence at Telluride with Adopt Films, Strand Releasing and A24.

ADOPT FILMS

Adopt Films made its Telluride debut two years ago in 2012 with "Barbara".  Than last year the distributor had "Bethlehem" at TFF.  This year they are the U.S. distributors for Cannes' Palme d'Or champion "Winter Sleep" which makes them a better than even bet to make the cut for TFF #41.

STRAND RELEASING

Here's what Strand has had at Telluride in the recent past:

2010: Cameraman: The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff
2011: Bonsai
2012: Paradise: Love
2013: The Missing Picture

So, Strand has been very consistent recently.  Another common thread is that all four of the above films played in some capacity at Cannes.  So the question becomes, does Strand have a project that fits this profile?  The answer is yes..."Girlhood"...played at Cannes and had a decent critical reaction.  So mark it down as a potential TFF #41 participant.

A24

A24 has not been around terribly long, but in their short existence they have come to play Telluride for the past two years.

2012: "Ginger and Rosa"
2013" "Under the Skin" and "Enemy"

So you have to think that they'll likely have a shot at something playing at T-ride.  What?

There's Atom Egoyan's "Captives" which was not all that well received at Cannes and seems a much more likely Toronto prospect.

Then there's J.C. Chandor's "A Most Violent Year" with Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain.  I'd like to believe that this film makes it to the San Juans.  The only other possibility is a virtually unknown flick from Julius Avery entitled "Son of a Gun"

Best chance is "A Most Violent Year"

COUNT ON COUSINS

Mark Cousins has become a common presence at the Telluride Film Festival 2009: "The First Movie", 2011; "The Story of Film: An Odyssey", 2012: "What is This Film Called Love?" and in 2013: "A Story of Children and Film".

Well, fear not Cousins fans, he's probably going to be back in Colorado on Labor Day weekend with another documentary project entitled "Life May Be" in which he co-directs and has a discussion with Iranian actress and director Mania Akbari.

Here's its IMDb page:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3592704/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_2

WILD POSTER

Reese Witherspoon's "Wild" directed by Jean-Marc Vallee (Dallas Buyers Club) released a poster for the film yesterday (see above).  The film is being distributed by FOx Searchlight and has some potentail to make this year's Telluride lineup.  I've linked an accompanying story from HitFix:

http://www.hitfix.com/in-contention/reese-witherspoon-hits-the-road-alone-in-new-wild-poster

and "Wild's" IMDb page:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2305051/?ref_=ttco_co_tt

That's it today...more tomorrow including the latest Ten Bets list.

Venice Opening has Gravity/Domestic Distributors Finale:Strand, A24, LD/Count on Cousins/Blue Not Oscar Bound?

Good Wednesday Everyone...

VENICE OPENING HAS GRAVITY

Word is out that the opening film for the Venice Film Fest is Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity".  This is not a big surprise.  "Gravity" has been a project that many had thought would serve in that sort of capacity...or get one  of the New York fest's big three slots.

I haven't thought it a likely Telluride candidate all along, though it's a film that I a curious about.  I really dug Cuaron"s "Children of Men".

A quick note; it's not absolutely precluded from playing Telluride.  The linked post from The Playlist below actually suggests that T-ride is a possibility and remember too that "Black Swan" opened Venice in 2010 and still managed to be a part of the Telluride lineup that year.  Finally, the film is at Warner Brothers who had "Argo" at Telluride last year and that seemed to work out well for them...so never say never.

Post form The Playlist:

DOMESTIC DISTRIBUTORS FINALE

After a week and a half of looking at U.S. film distributors, today I'll conclude the series by looking at three small outfits that occasionally have a film in play at the Telluride Film Festival and that might again this year.

STRAND RELEASING

Here's what Strand has had at Telluride in the recent past:

2010: Cameraman: The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff
2011: Bonsai
2012: Paradise: Love

So, Strand has been very consistent recently.  Another common thread is that all three of the above films played in some capacity at Cannes.  So the question becomes, does Strand have a project that fits this profile?  The answer is yes...

"Stranger by the Lake" played in the Un Certain Regard section and was fairly well received.  It also picked up the directing award for the UCR section for director/writer Alain Guiraudie.

All in all, this is strong circumstantial evidence that we'll probably have a chance to see the film at TFF #40.

Chances: 65%

A24

A24 has also been a smallish player at Telluride...and by smallish, I mean, their only past appearance was last year with Sally Potter's "Ginger and Rosa".  That probably had as much to do with it being Potter's film as anything as she has been at Telluride with previous work (Yes-'04).  A24 has also only been around for a couple of years.

However, just this week A24 announced that they had closed a deal to distribute "The Rover" which makes it something to watch for come Labor Day weekend.  "The Rover" is directed and co-written by David Michod (written with actor Joel Edgerton).

Here's a link from Thompson on Hollywood about the A24 acquisition:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/a24-acquires-the-rover-david-michod-robert-pattinson-guy-pearce

And from Hit Fix: http://www.hitfix.com/news/robert-pattinson-thriller-the-rover-acquire-by-bling-ring-distributor

 Chances for "The Rover" 30%

LD ENTERTAINMENT

LD Entertainment is also a relative newcomer to the distribution game having just started in 2009.  In that short time, however, the company has been represented at Telluride twice.

2010: Biutiful
2011: Albert Nobbs

This year the firm has Charlie Stratton's "Therese" with Elizabeth Olsen, Jessica Lange and not for nothing, Oscar Issac ...who also plays the title role in the Coen Brothers "Inside Llewyn Davis" as a possible feature for Telluride consumption.  "Therese" is based on the novel by Emile Zola and is not to be confused with the Audrey Tautou film of essentially the same name.

"Therese" has a 30% chance to play at Telluride.

COUNT ON COUSINS

Mark Cousins has become a common presence at the Telluride Film Festival (2009: "The First Movie", 2011; "The Story of Film: An Odyssey", 2012: "What is This Film Called Love?")  and although I didn't have his latest work listed last Friday on the first "Ten Bets" list for TFF #40...he'll almost certainly be on that list this week.  His latest compilation played at Cannes and continues his exploration of film.  It's entitled "A Story of Children and Film".

The Guardian recently profiled Cousins and the film retrospective.  Here that is:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2013/may/20/mark-cousins-children-film-cannes

TCM will be playing Cousins entire 15 part "Odyssey" beginning on Sept. 2...the day this year's festival concludes...Coincidence?  I doubt it.

Thompson on Hollywood had that story:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/story-of-film-mark-cousins-tcm-tv-debut

I'm saying that Cousins will be back and "A Story of Children and Film" will play.

BLUE NOT OSCAR BOUND?

Monday The Playlist reported that Cannes Palme d'Or winner and possible Telluride selection "Blue is the Warmest Color" likely will NOT be a candidate for France's choice for the Best Foreign Language Oscar.  That seems odd as a Palme winner seems like a no-brainer but it has to do with release dates.  Here's the link to The Playlist story:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/cannes-palme-dor-winner-blue-is-the-warmest-color-not-likely-to-enter-the-oscar-race-says-french-distributor-20130701

It also raises the question as to whether that affects the chances of the film playing at Telluride.  my guess is that it won't...leaving "Blue" as a 60% chance as I listed it last week in the Sundance Selects analysis.  Still, I'll keep an eye out to see if there are any release changes that might have a ripple effect.
