The website also confirms that passes will go on sale on March 1st. so make plans accordingly.

MALTIN'S  BILL PENCE REMEMBRANCE

Long time Telluride fixture Leonard Maltin penned a tribute to the late Bill Pence at his website which I have linked here.

Maltin wrote in part:

"It was difficult to learn that Bill’s health was fading in recent months. He was a hearty soul, buoyed by confidence and an unquenchable passion for films—and his family. That extended family grew to include many people who dedicated themselves to the Telluride Film Festival because of his and Stella’s leadership. Alice, Jessie and I couldn’t be more thankful."

YOUR REMINDER

I've started to get ratings from some of the readers of the blog today and I want to encourage everyone to share their opinions.  Be bold, I say.  I'm asking you to rate every film you saw at TFF#40 on a 0-5 scale (0 meaning awful, 5 meaning fantastic).  I'll put them together and post "The People's Telluride" next week.

You can add your ratings via comment on this blog or email to:

michael_speech@hotmail.com

OR

mpgort@gmail.com

or Tweet them to me on Twitter @Gort2

The Professionals version is about half complete.  My hope is to have that put together by the weekend.

TELLURIDE #40 RE-CAPS

I've linked to a couple of retrospectives about this year's festival from Leonard Maltin and Eugene Hernandez/The Film Society.  You can take a stroll down recent memory lane with both reports:

SAY NO JASON

I ran into director/writer Jason Reitman Sunday night in the concession line at "The Zog".  It's one of those things that can only happen in Telluride.  We talked for a bit and I included my claim that I'm his actual good luck charm as we had spoken in Telluride after the presentations of both "Juno" and "Up in the Air" (though I'm not so sure that "Labor Day" is going to be embraced as strongly as either of those two films).  He was, as you might expect, kind, pleasant and funny.

Then last night this headline from The Hollywood Reporter:

Toronto: Jason Reitman Lining Up His Next Film

OK...I think and the read the story.  Turns out the cast may include Adam Sandler...

Please no.  Here's the link to the THR post:

Sundancing/Unusual Lists/Oscar Confusion/A Separation/The Artist

Good Morning and Happy 2012!  I hope your start to the new year was entertaining.  My hope is that the whole of 2012 is entertaining.

SUNDANCING

I am very excited to announce that for the first time, Michael's Telluride Film Blog/The Film Awards Clearinghouse will have a presence at the Sundance Film Festival.  Not me (though I wish it was) but former student and active cinephile, Gant Lee of Cinema Bebop will be attending the back half of Sundance and has kindly agreed to allow this blog to share his experiences, impressions, reports and reviews...I am uber-pumped and not a little jealous.  Sundance is set to run from Jan. 19-29.  I believe Gant will be on the ground in Park City and vicinity from Jan. 24 or so until they close the place down. I'm  looking forward to seeing Gant's dispatches.

Also, if there's a Sundance title you have an interest in hearing about, drop me an email (mpgort@gmail.com) or tweet (twitter.com/@Gort2) and let me know.  No guarantees, but we'll see what we can do.

The Sundance website is here:

UNUSUAL LISTS

I ran across a couple of interesting lists this week that I thought I would pass along.  First is Scott Feinberg's list of films that were, at one point, thought to be potential players for the 2012 awards season.  He has 13 films on this list and one of them DID play Telluride (the fairly pedestrian "Butter", read my less than stellar review for The Playlist here: http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/telluride_11_review_jennifer_garners_butter_churns_and_churns_but_doesnt_pr
The other dozen are almost all films that at one point or another were on my Telluride 2012 radar.  Feinberg tells us what the status is for each of the films.  Here's the link to the article:
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/2011-awards-contenders-friends-with-kids-268424

The other list comes from my Telluride buddy, Leonard Maltin and is comprised of 11 films that he suggests are really good, but have been fling under the radar.  Included on his list are Telluride players "Of Gods and Men"and "Incendies" from TFF #37.  the complete list is here:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/leonard-maltin/the-11-best-films-you-may_1_b_1170232.html?ncid=edlinkusaolp00000003

OSCAR CONFUSION

Another year, and another new Oscar Best Picture procedure.  After the two year "Ten Nominees" experiment, the Academy has instituted a new voting procedure designed to give us anywhere from 5 to 10 Best Picture nominees.  After such a drastic change just two years ago, this new wrinkle has apparently created some confusion among Academy voters.  This according to Scott Feinberg/The Hollywood Reporter as you can see here:
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/oscar-ballots-academy-award-nominations-277034

I'd probably be confused too.

Incidentally, as we move into serious Oscar gear in the month of January, I am going to try to pick the brains of the few "insiders" I've come to know over the last few years and see what, if any, insight I might be able to glean from their wisdom.

A SEPARATION

A lot of heat continues for Asghar Farhadi's "A Separation" as reflected by continued and increasing media coverage.  Here is some of that:

From The Hollywood Reporter: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/a-separation-oscars-iran-asghar-farhadi-277083

Thompson on Hollywood: http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/farhadi-talks-iranian-oscar-entry-a-separation-divorce-drama-questions-irans-future

Metacritic: http://www.metacritic.com/movie/a-separation/critic-reviews

THE ARTIST:

The Guardian has a nearly five minute interview with the creators of the silent black and white Oscar favorite here:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/video/2011/dec/30/jean-dujardin-berenice-bejo-the-artist-video?CMP=twt_fd

FILM DETAIL

This website has posted its Best Of list for 2011 and i includes no less than six TFF #38 films.  Take a look here:
http://www.filmdetail.com/2011/12/31/the-best-films-of-2011/

That's a wrap for the first post of 2012...Again, Happy New Year and catch a new post on Thursday!  (should have some guild news to talk about).

Late Breaking News/Ten(+) Bets/Kevin's Trailer/Darren Aron-NOAH-sky/My Friend Marlon

Good Morning America!

Back to a real job today for this guy.  Teaching Inservice today and tomorrow.  Classes start Wednesday.
Also...pseudo-waiting...

The 38th Telluride Film Festival starts in 18 days...

LATE BREAKING NEWS

Two items making Telluride connected news late last night.:

1) Ioncinema.com baldly claims what I have expected for some time and that is that Werner Herzog's documentary "Into the Abyss" will play T-ride.  No surprise there.

and 2) Film critic and Telluride regular (and past Silver Medallion recipient) Leonard Maltin had surgery for a detached retina yesterday in El Paso, TX.  Wishing you a speedy recovery, Mr. Maltin!

TEN (+) BETS

There's some chance that we see W.E.

Last week's Ten Bets were:

1) The Descendants
2) Gazing Into the Abyss
3) A Trip to the Moon
4) The Artist
5) We Have to Talk About Kevin
6) Le Havre
7) Prohibition
8) Drive
9) Shame
10) The Kid with a Bike/Dark Horse (tie)

This week's Ten Bets:

1) The Descendants
2) Into the Abyss
3) The Artist
4) A Trip to the Moon
5) We Have to Talk About Kevin
6) Le Havre
7) Prohibition
8) Shame
9) Drive
10) The Kid with a Bike

Here's the "+"
11) Dark Horse
12) The Birds Upstairs
13) The Skin I Live In
14) The Lady
15) W.E.
16) The Ides of March
17) Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
18) Albert Nobbs
19) Coriolanus
20) A Dangerous Method

Note: Kris Tapley at Incontention.com in his July 28th Telluride spec piece listed three Sundance films as possibles, but because they already appeared in Park City, I'm doubtful that they will be in T-ride.  The three are: "Take Shelter," "Like Crazy" and "Martha Marcy May Marlene."

Now that we're down to less than three weeks, I may update the "Ten Bets" list with more frequency than once a week depending what oozes out that I can latch onto.

KEVIN'S ENGLISH TRAILER

A lot of buzz surrounding Lynne Ramsay's "We Need to Talk About Kevin" this last week including a post from the weekend from First Showing.net for the film's U.K. trailer.  Tilda Swinton and John C. Reilly star.  The trailer looks appropriately chilling and kind of creepy.  "Kevin" remains at #5 on this week's "Ten Bets."

DARREN ARONOFSKY AND NOAH

Earlier this summer I passed on the news that Darren Aronofsky (director of last year's TFF#37 sensation and multi-Oscar nominated "Black Swan"--Natalie Portman winning Best Actress) was  tackling the Biblical story of Noah as his next project.  Because it's Aronofsky and because "Swan" had such a successful run last year, you have to include "Noah" as a future Telluride possibility at least for the time being.

Get the Big Picture.com posted a fairly substantial speculative piece about that "Noah" project this weekend.  You can take a look at that post here:
http://www.getthebigpicture.net/blog/2011/8/13/we-can-only-speculate-what-noah-will-be-like-under-darren-ar.html?utm

Aronofsky's IMDb page is here:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004716/

MY FRIEND MARLON

One of the most viewed posts that I put up this summer included my pictures of me and film legend Marlon Brando.  It was fun to relive that two day period when the double Oscar winner and arguably the finest screen actor of all time was in Weatherford, OK.

So, naturally, when I saw the post this week from Open Culture.com that included Brando's screen test for "Rebel Without a Cause" I had to put a link to it here on my blog.  Not only because it's really cool, but also because it gave me another excuse to put up the Brando and me photo...

Here's the link to Brando's screen test (which, of course, was unsuccessful. Some kid named James Dean got the role  The article also has a link to Dean's screen test):

A New Gig for Salman/More Coen's Musicals

Potential TV mogul Salman Rushdie???

One of the cooler things that happens at the Telluride Film Festival is that you actually have the opportunity to meet and interact with many of the people that are there as a part of the festival.  I've, unbelievably, had real conversations with Oscar nominee Laura Linney, film critic Leonard Maltin, documentarian Ken Burns among others.  One of those others was award winning author Salman Rushdie (he of "Satanic Verses" fame and the survivor of an Iranian Ayatollah's fatwa).  Rushdie is a member of the Telluride Film Festival's Board of Advisors, so he's there most years.  We talked about the film he was introducing in 2008, Nadita Das' "Firaaq."

All this preamble is to get to the story we found today on Anne Thompson's "Thompson on Hollywood" blog today..that Rushdie is going to be producing a television program for American television.  Called "The Next People," Thompson reports that its headed for Showtime and will be a science fiction series.  So how about that?  I don't know if you've ever read any of Rushdie's work, but if the series is remotely in the mode of his literature...it will be challenging.

You can find Thompson's complete article here:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/2011/06/13/in_the_works_june_13/

Incidentally, Thompson (with whom I've also had a conversation in Telluride) also seconds The Playlist story from yesterday concerning the Coen Brothers next project being a musical or heavily musically oriented. Today's thought: "Fargo: The Musical"  featuring such musical numbers as "Three Dead in Brainerd," "Lundegaard's Lament," and "The Wood Chipper's Waltz."

And finally, tomorrow I'm going to start talking about a new film that's currently in development.  A film that I know some scuttlebutt about because of...(you guessed it) the Telluride Film Fesival.
