MTFB OSCAR TAKE: UPDATING BEST PICTURE AND DIRECTION

In today's post I am updating Oscar predictions for Best Picture and Best Direction which were last posted on Nov. 3rd.  TFF #49 films are in Bold.

BEST PICTURE

1) The Fabelmans (1)
2) The Banshees of Inisherin (2)
3) Women Talking (3)
4) Top Gun: Maverick (6)
5) Everything Everywhere All at Once (4)
6) TAR (5)
7) Elvis (10)
8) Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (New)
9) Glass Onion (7)
10) Triangle of Sadness (11)

11) She Said (9)
12) Babylon (8)

Out: Empire of Light
Ought to think about: Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Living and Armageddon Time

Comment: Wildly divergent responses to Damien Chazelle's Babylon from screenings this week in Los Angeles and New York have lead me to drop its prospects for a Best Picture nomination significantly.  The film is under an embargo for full reviews but social media reaction was divisive to say the least.

BEST DIRECTION

1) Steven Spielberg/The Fabelmans (1)
2) Sarah Polley/Women Talking (2)
3) Martin McDonagh/The Banshees of Inisherin (3)
4) Todd Field/TAR (4)
5) The Daniels/EEAAO (5)

6) Damien Chazelle/Babylon (6)
7) Rueben Ostlund/Triangle of Sadness (7)

The Professional's Telluride (CORRECTED) / The People's Telluride / Sam Mendes on Empire of Light

THE PROFESSIONALS TELLURIDE

After last year's stunning win of the MTFB Professionals ratings by Dean Fleischer-Camp's Marcel the Shell with Shoes On I had to wonder if another "upset" of that kind might happen again.  That result a year ago made quite a splash with outlets such as Variety, Indiewire, Awards Daily and Awards Watch taking notice.

A couple of notes by way of explanation.  The Pros were asked to rate the films they saw on a scale of 1-5 with 1 being not-so-very-good and 5 being "fantastic".  Additionally, a film had to be rated by more than half of this year's panel of pros to make the list.

I am, as always, indebted to all of the industry professionals who took time from their crazy busy schedules to provide me their feedback.  I can't adequately express my appreciation.  And this year's panel of pros (in alphabetical order) are:

Erik Anderson/Awards Watch
J. Don Birnam-Jorge T/SplashReport.com
Clayton Davis/Variety
David Ehrlich/Indiewire
Scott Feinberg/The Hollywood Reporter
Marshall Flores/Awards Daily
Dave Karger/TCM
Tomris Laffly/Roger Ebert.com and others
Joey Magidson/Awards Radar
Scott Menzel/We Live Entertainment
Clarence Moye/Awards Daily
Matt Neglia/Next Best Picture
Christopher Schiller/ScriptMag.com
Sasha Stone/Awards Daily
Anonymous

NOTE: THE POLL HAS BEEN CORRECTED AS OF 11:45 AM EDT TO REFLECT A TABULATION ERROR.  The correction added .09 to the average od Sebastian DeLillo's The Wonder moving it from 7th to 5th in an incredibly tight poll.  My apologies.

We missed having ratings from Anne Thompson/Indiewire and Mark Johnson/Good as Gold-Awards Daily as both were unable to attend TFF #49.  My hope is to have them both back into the fold for TFF #50.

AND NOW...The Professionals Ratings from TFF #49 (this year only 11 films were seen by enough Professionals to make the list)

1) TAR 3.93
2) Women Talking 3.87
3) Armageddon Time 3.73
4) Empire of Light 3.70
5) The Wonder 3.66

10) Living 3.05
11) Bardo 2.39

Both TAR and Women Talking were the most watched films as all 15 Pros made it to a screening of those films.  Empire of Light was seen by 14 Pros.

Tough times continued for Alejandro Inarittu's Bardo.  After a less than enthusiastic response from critics in Venice and then Telluride, the Pros for MTFB tended to agree with that general assessment.

After this year's poll, The Professionals' All Time Top Ten (through 2022) remained unchanged from last year:

1) Moonlight (4.87) (16)
2) Parasite (4.75) (19)

10) Son of Saul (4.44) (15)
10) Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (4.44) (21)

MORE ON THE DOLAN

I mentioned in yesterday's post as a part of looking at the Canadian film lineup announced by Toronto the -what seemed to me to be unusual omission- of Xavier Dolan's Matthias and Maxime.  As it turns out, I wasn't the only one who noticed.

A Tweet from Tom Linay put me onto a story from The Globe and Mail about the TIFF announcement that included this passage about the Dolan film:

"One highly anticipated Canadian film that wasn’t announced on Wednesday, though, was Matthias et Maxime, the eighth film by Xavier Dolan that premiered at Cannes this spring.

Last year, TIFF waited until its splashy Canadian programming news conference to reveal that it had secured the world premiere of Dolan’s The Death and Life of John F. Donovan – a surprise to the assembled media, who were not informed of the move when presented with TIFF’s initial Canadian slate the day before. Gravestock, however, assures that there will be no such Dolan twist this year.

"I don't think there are going to be any surprises, not that I know of," he says. "There will be a whole slew of announcements over the next couple weeks, but no [on the Dolan]. There are lots of films that are not available to us, and that's just the way programming is."

So we can take from this that the film will NOT be announced for TIFF in future news releases.  We can also parse from the last sentence that the film...for whatever reason...is not "available" to TIFF.  We also know that it screened at Cannes back in May and that it is also set to screen today as a part of of the Melbourne Film Fest...so it's obviously ready.

Does it make a TFF #46 appearance?

Here's the link to the complete Globe and Mail story.

1917 TRAILER...TOO LATE FOR TELLURIDE?

A first look trailer for Sam Mendes' 1917 landed yesterday.  Looks good, intriguing...a little reminded of Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk from a couple of years back.

The trailer says "December" at the end suggesting an as yet unannounced U.S. premiere date for that month which doesn't mean that it's necessarily too late Telluride to be part of Universal's strategy for its release and awards campaign.  We also learned, though, that the film's English debut is late January which may indicate that Telluride and even Toronto may be out of the picture.  Maybe any fest play at all including New York, AFI and London.

Here's the video from YouTube:

Here's a sampling of the stories that accompanied the trailer drop yesterday:

A Week To Go

Multiple sources including Variety confirmed today that Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" will be part of the Telluride film line-up for this year's festival. That tidbit was reported here on Aug. 12.

Otherwise, speculation remains very muted with one week left prior to the kick off of the fest. Other Cannes possibles (that are also aligned with Sony Classics Pictures which was a big connection to films that played the fest last year) include "Adoration"and "Lorna's Silence".

Also, a frequent contributor of films that past 2 years has been Paramount Vantage, which has 3 films positioned for fall release. "The Duchess" with Ralph Fiennes and Keira Knightley, "Defiance" with Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber and, of course, DeCaprio and Winslet reunited in the Sam Mendes directed "Revolutionary Road".

You have to think that a couple of these also end up on the Telluride play list.
