Good Thanksgiving Thursday to Everyone...I'm thankful for all of you that occasionally read this space. Reporting today from the Rio Grande Art and Craft Show in Albuquerque, NM. The CEO and I are here until Sunday slinging art for The People!
TELLURIDE #40 AND OSCAR #86
With today's post I'm going to start to try to take a look at a more comprehensive view of how this year's Telluride Festival will affect the Oscar nominations. To do this, I'll be focusing on the comprehensive predictions from some of the Oscarologists that I frequently study beginning today with the InContention potion of the HitFix website. InContention is edited by Kristopher Tapley.
What I've done is collected the predictions from InContention for every film that played at Telluride this year (and actually 4 from TFF #39). Here's what Kris and the InContention crew are currently predicting:
11 nominations (and the most for) Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave": Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Film Editing, Original Score, Production Design and Costume.
10 nominations for Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity": Best Picture, Director, Actress, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Film Editing, Original Score, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects.
6 nominations for The Coen Brothers "Inside Llewyn Davis": Best Picture, Director(s), Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design and Sound Mixing.
5 nominations for Alexander Payne's "Nebraska": Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay.
3 nominations for "All is :Lost": Best Actor, Sound Mixing and Sound Editing.
And single nominations for "The Invisible Woman": Costume, "Tim's Vermeer": Documentary, "The Wind Rises": Animated Feature and "Gloria": Foreign Language Film.
That's a total of 39 nominations! Additionally, four TFF #39 films are included in InContention predictions. This doesn't include the possibility of some other nominations in the "Shorts" categories.
"The Hunt" and "Wadjda" for Foreign Language Film and "Stories We Tell" and "The Act of Killing" for Documentary.
I'll take a look at Awards Daily's predictions in the next post.
INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AND TELLURIDE
The Independent Spirit Award nominations were announced on Tuesday and Telluride's 40th edition was overwhelmingly represented (TFF #39 was repped too). In all, TFF #40 films were nominated 22 times. Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave" led the onslaught with seven nominations: Best Feature, Director, Actor, Supporting Actress, Supporting Actor, Screenplay and Cinematography.
Alexander Payne's "Nebraska" was a close second with six nominations: Feature, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, First Screenplay.
Other Telluride 40 films that were nominated on Tuesday included "All is Lost": Feature, Actor, Director, Cinematography. Also "Inside Llewyn Davis": Feature, Actor and Cinematography.
Also TFF #40 nominated films were "Blue is the Warmest Color" and "Gloria" for Best International Film.
TFF #39 films landing Spirit nominations included Noah Baumbach's "Frances Ha" for Best Feature and Editing. "The Hunt" was nominated for Best International Feature. "The Act of Killing" was nominated for Best Documentary. "Wadjda" was nominated for Best First Feature.
I'm personally pleased at the triumph of both "12 Years" and "Nebraska". I'm also pleased that Oscar Isaac got some love as Best Male Lead for "Inside Llewyn Davis". I'm also glad that "All is Lost" was nominated for more than Redford's incredible performance and that "Frances Ha" got some mention...though I would have liked to see it in the Best Actress and Screenplay categories as well.
NO LONGER COMING ATTRACTION
For months now I have been passing along the troubled story of "Jane Got a Gun". Initially I had it on my radar as a potential Telluride film for TFF #41 because The Weinstein Company was involved and it was originally being directed by Lynne Ramsay who has directed films that have played TFF before. Then, as the film began to have increasing difficulties with the director and then casting, I just got a little obsessive.
Now, it looks like you can wipe it off the possible Telluride list as the announcement came this week that "Jane" was going to open prior to the Telluride Festival. The Dissolve, among others, reported that it has been set for an Aug. 29, 2014 release date (which, if I have it right, is the opening day for TFF #41) so it seems you can strike "Jane Got a Gun" from your TFF #41 watch list.
Here's the link to the post from The Dissolve:

TIM'S PRODUCER
Telluride favorite and likely Best Documentary Oscar nominee "Tim's Vermeer" producer Farley Ziegler recently talked to IndieWire about the process of tuning months worth of filming into an 80 minute film:
http://www.indiewire.com/article/watch-how-tims-vermeer-filmmakers-determined-a-runtime-with-2400-hours-of-footage
OSCAR TALKS LLEWYN
Oscar Isaac who plays Llewyn in the Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis" sat down with Deadline's Pete Hammond to talk about the film and the music from it:
deadline.com/2013/11/oscar-isaac-inside-llewyn-davis-joel-ethan-coen-oscars/
Also, The Playlist posted the "Please Mr. Kennedy" performance from the film this morning. I think it's the funniest moment in a film that has, as you'd expect from the Coens, a lot of subversive humor. Also, it will likely remind some of you of a certain age of Larry Verne's #1 novelty hit "Please Mr. Custer". I have no doubt that that is no accident. Here's the clip from YouTube:

That's all until Monday. Have a fantastic Thanksgiving weekend and start to Hanukkah!

Inside Llewyn News/12 Years Honored/Nebraska and the AFI
Good Thursday to Everyone...
INSIDE LLEWYN NEWS
The Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis" mad a big splash this past week with its unveiling as a part of The New York Film Festival. The highlight may have been the benefit concert that happened on Sunday night.
Many of the musicians (Marcus Mumford, The Punch Brothers) and actors (Oscar Issac, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman) that are a part of the soundtrack were a part of the show. The concert also included appearances from musical stars of the early-60's era that the film portrays including Joan Baez.
The film is scheduled for release on Dec. 20.
Anne Thompson of Thompson on Hollywood reveals the man behind Llewyn Davis: actor Oscar Issac.
http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/oscar-isaac-talks-acting-and-guitar-picking-for-the-coens-inside-llewyn-davis
Issac is making some noise concerning the Best Actor race but the category is loaded with possible contenders this year. Alex Billington of FirstShowing.net addresses that issue:

The "Another Day, Another Time" concert featuring the music that inspired the film as well as music from the film itself was a big hit last weekend. I have linked stories from Variety and The Playlist:

12 YEARS A SLAVE HONORED
The announcement came earlier this week that director Steve McQueen and actress Lupita Nyong'o will be feted as a part of the Hollywood Film Awards for their work on "12 Years a Slave". The film's profile has increased steadily since its premiere at Telluride and is aimed at a New York Film Festival screening within the week. The Grio and The Hollywood Reporter both filed stories about the HFA that will include McQueen and Nyong'o:

NEBARSKA AND THE AFI
Alexander Payne's "Nebraska" was one of three films named this week as centerpieces for the American Film Institutes's Film Fest. The other films announced were Ben Stiller's "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and Scott Cooper's "Out of the Furnace". At least one of the films were likely added as a replacement for Bennett Miller's "Foxcatcher" which has now been pushed to a 2014 release. AFI also announced that Bruce Dern will be honored as a part of the festival as well. HitFix has the story here:

Telluride Day One/Friday's TBA and Sneaks
Telluride 2013 Day One:
Busy day today occasionally interrupted by waiting.
The day got off to an amazing start at the annual Patron’s
Brunch. The Brunch affords Patrons and
Sponsors pass as well as the Fest organizers and a number of the filmmakers a chance
to meet and schmooze before any of the actual films have been screened. The food is fantastic and it’s always fun
seeing who shows up. This year’s version
did not disappoint. Highlighting the
morning (for me) was the appearance of Francis Ford Coppola, reportedly here to
introduce his granddaughter Gia’s film “Palo Alto” during the weekend. I actually got to shake the great man’s hand
and thank him for the films he’s given us.
I’m sure that for him it is a common refrain, but for me it was a very
nearly transcendent moment. He was kind
enough to stop a moment for a stranger.
Another incredible moment had actually occurred earlier in
the morning. Robert Redford had arrived
and the grounds of Gray Head (the name of the facility where the brunch is
held) was alive with electricity. A few
minutes later, Coppola appeared. Redford
broke away from the crowd that had engulfed him to greet him. One legend greeting another, it was an
incredible sight. Fortunately caught on
camera by my wife Kristy:
I also briefly met Bruce Dern this morning. He was also very kind and funny. He’s here starring in Alexander Payne’s
“Nebraska”. I’m planning to see that
first thing in the morning. More about
my planned schedule for tomorrow a bit later.
Then a long wait for a bus made me almost late for the first
screening of the day, the Patron’s screening of Jason Reitman’s “Labor Day”
starring Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin.
The story of a chance meeting between a single mom, her son and an
escaping convict seems to have been generally well received in early
reviews. My take: structural issues
early in the film are a tough balancing act.
I have some issues of credibility in terms of the rapid development of
the relationship between the two lead characters and that credibility is
crucial to the second half of the film.
That said, the second half plays beautifully. Winslet is good and Brolin is outstanding. Child actor Gattlin Griffith is also very
good as Winslet’s son.
Following the “Labor Day” screening we scurried over the
mountain to my annual meet up with followers of my blog.
Then a quick dinner at the Opening Night Feed. There the Mrs. Met and got a photo of the one
and only Penn Jillette, here with the documentary “Tim’s Vermeer”.
We concluded the night with a screening of “Inside Llewyn
Davis” with a Q & A after with Joel and Ethan Coen, T-Bone Burnett and
Oscar Issac. The film follows a week in
the life of fictional folk singer, the Llewyn Davis of the title-played by
Issac. He’s terrific. John Goodman and F. Murray Abraham are great.
The music is terrific. I loved the film
quite a lot. I think it speaks to anyone
who has had any artistic aspirations and who hasn’t seen them fulfilled whether
from lack of talent, lack of opportunity or the vagaries of life.
Day One was incredible.
On Day Two I’m currently planning the Robert Redford Tribute, , “Tim’s
Vermeer”, “All is Lost”, The Coens tribute and “The Past” if I have enough
energy. Of course, that all could change
with the announcement of the Friday TBAs. Seven slots to fill tomorrow
afternoon and evening.
FRIDAY'S TBA'S AND SNEAKS
• 4pm Masons
GLORIA (33)
• 6pm Herzog Sneak: PRISONERS
• 6:30pm Masons BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID
• 7:30pm Galaxy Sneak: 12 YEARS A SLAVE

Sneak Preview: Prisoners
A father (Hugh Jackman) goes ballistic trying to punish the suspected abductor (Paul Dano) of his daughter and another girl, while running afoul of the diligent cop (Jake Gyllenhaal) working the case. Sounds like countless hours of TV procedural-cop dramas? Nope. Director Denis Villeneuve (INCENDIES, TFF 2010), working from Aron Guzikowski’s fiendishly inventive script, reaches Dostoyevskian depths, creating a terrifying, morally ambiguous universe where ordinary human decency faces the harshest of tests. The superb supporting cast includes Terrence Howard, Viola Davis, and Melissa Leo. It may surprise you that Hollywood genre moves can still be this good. (U.S., 2013, 107m) In person: Denis Villeneuve
• Sneak Preview: 12 Years a Slave
In 1840s New York State, Solomon Northrup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), an impeccable middle-class attorney with a happy family and superb skills as a violinist, is an African American free from birth who has never spent a moment of his life confronting the horrors of black experience down South. Pursuing a business opportunity in Washington, DC, he is kidnapped and enslaved, and descends into a harrowing nightmare of moral corruption and irrational violence. Director Steve McQueen (HUNGER, SHAME) and screenwriter John Ridley shape Northrup’s memoir into a vivid, compelling historical fresco, with superb performances from Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, in his third collaboration withMcQueen, Lupita Nyong'o, Paul Dano, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti and Brad Pitt. Shame on View/Film Festival Awards/The Artist/Foreign Film/Llewyn???
Good Monday morning everyone...fall break in a couple of days...
SHAME ON VIEW
It hasn't been a secret that I have been a big fan of Steve McQueen's "Shame" form this year's festival. I'm also a big fan of the performances of both Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan in the film. I'd like to see them get some Oscar traction over these next few months.
Well, the pitch continued this week as we now have a trailer for the film which seems a little unbelievable that they were able to find enough non-R rated footage to put one together...but they have and it's impressive and here are multiple links to it:
