2014: The Oscars and TFF #40/Looking to TFF #41/Trailers from TFF #40/Conversations: Dern and Mulligan/Sound and Silence at Telluride

I hope all the readers/followers and peeps that just stumbled onto this space had a safe and joyous start to their New Year.  The CEO and I saw in 2014 by watching the last few episodes of "Breaking Bad". Good stuff.  Hale Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul.


2014: THE OSCARS AND TFF #40

As we wait for the next two weeks for Oscar nomination morning (Jan. 16), I'll be posting Oscar prediction updates in each of the posts between now and then.  Today...looking at a different metric.  Just to see what it would tell me, I've put together the results of "Best Film" announcements from: The National Board of Review, The American Film Institute, The New York Film Critics Circle, The Los Angeles Film Critics, The HFPA's Golden Globes and The Screen Actors Guild.

Working with the choices from these six organizations and setting a standard that possible nominees had to be named by at least 2 of them, here's what they reveal as the "probable" Oscar nominees on Jan. 16.

Best Picture:  Four films were named four times and would, therefore seem the most likely nominees: "12 Years a Slave", "Gravity", "American Hustle" and "Her".

Three films have three mentions: "Nebraska", "Inside Llewyn Davis" and "The Wolf of Wall Street"

Three films are mentioned twice: "Captain Phillips", "Fruitvale Station" and "Saving Mr. Banks".

How accurate is this method?  I have no real idea as I've never tried it before.  I can tell you that in 2012 the same method would have suggested that the Best Picture nominees would be: "Argo", "Django Unchained", "The Life of Pi", "Lincoln", "Zero Dark Thirty", "Les Miserables", "Moonrise Kingdom", Silver Linings Playbook", "Beats of the Southern Wild" and "The Exotic Marigold Hotel" (seriously).

As you remember, the actual nominees included "Amour" and excluded "Moonrise" and "Marigold".  So this metric would have predicted 8 of the 9 Best Picture nominees last year.

Monday, I'll post an update for the Big Eight categories using my usual methods.

LOOKING TO TFF #41

It's never too early to begin thinking about what might be on the bill of fare for the next Telluride Film Festival.  Even though we're still eight months away, we can begin to parse various pieces of information and start speculating.

For example, HitFix posted their "25 Most Anticipated Movies of 2014".  Form their list we can glean some films that have the potential to make the grade at TFF #41.  Obviously, there are some films that aren't likely, Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" for example...although, after seeing "Gravity" at T-ride last year, maybe I shouldn't close that door.  You can find the HitFix complete list here:

From their list, films that could conceivably be on Telluride's radar include:

#24 "Foxcatcher"...yea, yea...I know.  I had this on the TFF #40 list for most of last year and then the decision came down to move the film to 2014.  The chances of it being held for an awards friendly release date are probably pretty good (it doesn't have an announced release date to the best of my knowledge) and as I have pointed out before, Bennett Miller had a decent run after "Capote" showed at the SHOW in 2005 and to top it off, its U.S. distributor is Sony Pictures Classics so call it a "maybe".

The only other two on the HitFix list that seem to have some Telluride "feel" are Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken" at #16 and Jon Stewart's (of The Daily Show) "Rosewater" at #8 and neither one would seem to be particularly strong candidate for Telluride inclusion based on the filmmakers, studios and distributors known to be involved at this time.

A COUPLE OF TRAILERS FROM TFF #40

One of the more popular, if not THE most popular film that screened at Telluride last Labor Day was Penn and teller's documentary "Tim's Vermeer".  It's in the conversation for a Best Feature Doc Oscar nomination and it's safe to say that Telluride audiences loved it.  It topped my "People's Telluride" film ratings with a 4.67 average rank on the five point scale, beating "12 Years a Slave" and "Gravity".

Meanwhile, one of the most divisive and least well received films of the fest also put up a trailer this week.  Jonathan Glazer's "Under the Skin" was dead last (of the 21 films that got enough ratings to warrant inclusion on the list) on The People's Telluride ratings with a 2.0.  I actually admired the film.  I think it succeeded in creating the world that Glazer wanted us to experience.

Two of my favorite films from TFF #40 continue to get a lot of ink as the awards season goes on and that includes continuing interviews with the stars of "Nebraska" and "Inside Llewyn Davis".

OSCAR GOODIES

Scott Feinberg, resident Oscar expert for The Hollywood Reporter has filed his latest projections for his Feinberg Forecast here:

Feinberg's latest snapshot of the Oscar race includes predictions in 16 of the 21 feature categories.  He doesn't include predictions for Film Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Costume or Production Design.

That being noted, Feinberg predicts 8 nominations in those 16 categories fro "12 Years a Salve" followed by "Gravity", "American Hustle" and "Captain Phillips" with 6 apiece.  Feinberg suggests four nominations each for: "Saving Mr. Banks", "Dallas Buyers Club" and "Nebraska" and 3 each for "The Wolf of Wall Street" and "Inside Llewyn Davis".

Telluride films in Feinberg's view:

"12 Years a Slave" with 8 nominations and 3 wins.
"Gravity" with 6 nominations and 3 wins
"Nebraska" with 4 nominations.
"Inside Llewyn Davis" with 3 nominations.
Single nominations for "All is Lost", "The Wind Rises", "Tim's Vermeer", "The Missing Picture".

TFf #39 nominations for "The Act of Killing" and "The Hunt".

Of course, I think these totals will be larger as the other five categories are included.

OSCAR FOREIGN SHORTLIST

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences winnowed the list of 70+ Foreign Language Film submissions down to 9 titles this past week and what as noticeable as the films that made the cut were the omissions and that left a number of Telluride films that had been hotly tipped as Oscar nominees out.

Pre-announcement Telluride films that were snubbed included "The Past", "Gloria" and TFF #39's "Wadjda"

Telluride wasn't totally left unrepresented in the shortlist as "The Missing Picture" made the cut and last year's Mads Mikkelsen starrer "The Hunt" was also listed.

The final nine also included:

"The Broken Circle Breakdown"
"An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker"
"Two Lives"
"The Grandmaster"
"The Notebook"
"The Great Beauty"
"Omar"

Next, the Academy members have to knock the list down to five.  If I were handicapping it (like I know anything about this), I'd guess that "The Hunt", "The Grandmaster", "The Great Beauty" and "The Broken Circle" Breakdown" are likely nominees with the fifth film up in the air.

BEHIND INSIDE

One of my favorite moments in The Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis" is the recording session that produces "Please Mr. Kennedy".  It sums up a number of the themes of the film and is just a hoot.

THE PAST'S FARHADI

Asghar Farhadi's follow up to his Oscar winning " A Separation", "The Past" was very well received at Telluride over Labor Day weekend.  As mentioned above, the film was snubbed by The Academy FLF committee and to the surprise of many, including me, it was not shortlisted for this year's Oscar.

THE VISIBLE FELICITY JONES

The actress at the center of Ralph Fiennes Charles Dickens film, "The Invisible Woman" is Felicity Jones. She is the "invisible" woman referenced in the title.  Reactions to the film was divided in Telluride but ones generally received high marks for her portrayal of the younger woman that captured Dickens heart.

Good Monday All...back in the Panhandle of Oklahoma after a fantastic weekend at the Rio Grande Art and Craft Festival in Albuquerque, NM.  It was a great time!

Today, I am continuing to break down the Oscar predictions from a number of Oscar experts and their predictions as they relate to films from Telluride #40 (and a little bit of TFF #39).  Today, as promised, I'm taking a look at the current predictions from Awards Daily's Sasha Stone.  If her prognostications are 100% correct this is how Oscar nominations would shake out for films from TFF #40:

"12 Years a Slave" (14 nominations): Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing, Cinematography, Production Design, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Costumes, Score and Makeup.  (Personally, I think "12 Years" is good for 11 noms...I'm not seeing the Sound nominations or Makeup).

"Gravity" (10 nominations): Best Picture, Director, Actress, Film Editing, Cinematography, Production Design, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Score and Visual Effects.

"Nebraska" (6 nominations): Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Film Editing.  (I actually think Bruce Dern is going to get a Best Actor nomination).

"Inside Llewyn Davis" (6 nominations): Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay, Production Design, Costumes

"All is Lost" (4 nominations): Best Picture, Best Actor, Original Screenplay, Film Editing (I suspect "All is Lost" also has a pretty good shot in the Sound Mixing and Editing categories).

Stone also has single nominations for:

"Labor Day": Adapted Screenplay
"Prisoners": Cinematography
"Gloria": Foreign Language Film
"The Past": Foreign Language Film
"Tim's Vermeer": Documentary
"The Unknown Known": Documentary
"The Wind Rises": Animated Feature

and TFF #39 title "The Act of Killing" for Documentary.


Overall, at this point, Awards Daily's Sasha Stone has TFF #40 films with a mind blowing 47 nominations and an additional nomination for TFF #39.

Personally, I think a TFF #40 total of 40 nominations is more likely, which is still an incredible total number for the films of Telluride #40.

REDFORD ON A ROLL

Perhaps the stiffest challenge to Bruce Dern getting an Oscar nomination is the other 77 year old that has roared back to acting prominence this year.  Robert Redford will almost certainly be nominated for J.C. Chandor's "All is Lost" and a number of Oscarologists question whether the five man field will be big enough for 2 septuagenarians (I'm betting that it WILL be).

Alexander Payne told us in Telluride that there was a color version of "Nebraska".  Now he's telling The Dissolve the same thing and explaining why it exists:

THE MUSIC OF LLEWYN DAVIS

A couple of interesting developments this week concerning the music from the Coen Brothers "Inside Llewyn Davis".  First, NPR's First Listen has posted the entire soundtrack at their website so that you can stream it...I've been doing that all week.  Here's that link:

And Nonesuch Records, the label for the soundtrack released a vinyl version to sell in indy record stores at the "era" price of $5.98.  This is the complete soundtrack (and I've ordered 6 of them... some for Christmas gifts).  Those of us who were able to attend the Patron's Brunch at Telluride this year had already received a 6 song vinyl EP from the soundtrack as a part of the Patron swag.  The CEO also has the CD version on order as a part of my birthday gifts.  Needless to say, I like this soundtrack a lot.  Rolling Stone has the story of the vinyl LP release:

LOTS OF 12 YEARS MATERIAL...

With its screening as apart of The New York Film Festival this week, Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave" saw a burst of media attention.  Dutifully, I have compiled some of that here for your perusal.  It also allows me to remind all of you that read this space, that I still think that it was the best thing I saw at TFF #40 and I'm feeling confident that it will be the best film I will see this year (Scorsese's "Wolf", Clooney's "Monuments Men", Jonze's "Her", Stiller's "Walter Mitty", Greengrasses' "Capt. Phillips" notwithstanding).  Frankly, looking at what's still out there to be seen, the film that looks to me to be the biggest challenge to "12 Years" supremacy might be David O. Russell's "American Hustle".  I still have serious reservations about "Saving Mr. Banks".

I've said it before and will say it again... "12 Years a Slave" is the film we'll still be talking about 10-20-50 years from now.  That said, here's some of the coverage from this week:

KECHICHE ON BLUE: SHOW IT

Well, you can't say that Cannes Palme d'Or winner "Blue is the Warmest Color" hasn't had its share of controversy in the five weeks since it payed at Telluride.  First, just the general furor about the explicitness of the lesbian love scenes, then the stories that stars Lea Seydoux and Adele Excharopolous felt violated (by the way, I meT Ms. Excharopolous briefly at this year's Patron Brunch...she is as lovely in real life as she appears to be on screen...she was also very kind to this small-time blogger).  Then came the story that director Abdellatif Kechiche didn't even want the film released.  On top of all that, came the decision from the French not to allow a limited release there to act as a qualifying run for the Foreign Language Oscar.  It's been intriguing to say the least.

DERN FOR LEAD

Bruce Dern thinks he should be campaigned for Best Actor for "Nebraska".  Some Oscar experts have gone on record saying that he should go Supporting as he'd be a virtual lock for a nomination and the probable favorite to win.  Further, the experts say, the Best Actor race is crazy competitive...Redford, McConnaughey, Hanks, DiCaprio, Bale, Issac, Ejiofor, Phoenix and more.

You can argue that Will Forte is the lead...you'd be wrong, but you can make the argument.  I'm all for Bruce's position.  He's a lead...that's where he should be considered.  Frankly, I think  he'll get the nomination.  I doubt he wins, though.

FOREIGN FILM OSCAR ANALYSIS AND PREDICTIONS

The Hollywood Reporter's Scott Feinberg took a look this week at the Foreign Language Oscar field.  Feinberg sets the favorite as Asghar Farhadi's "The Past" but argues that it's by no means a prohibitive favorite.  TFF #40 as well as #39 films are mentioned favorably by Feinberg as possible challengers including "Bethlehem", "The Hunt", "Wajdja" and "Gloria".  As mentioned above, "Blue is the Warmest Color" is off the table for this year's Oscar Foreign Language consideration as is "The Lunchbox".  Peruse Scott's complete post here:

INSIDE LLEWYN NEWS

The Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis" mad a big splash this past week with its unveiling as a part of The New York Film Festival.  The highlight may have been the benefit concert that happened on Sunday night.

Many of the musicians (Marcus Mumford, The Punch Brothers) and actors (Oscar Issac, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman) that are a part of the soundtrack were a part of the show.  The concert also included appearances from musical stars of the early-60's era that the film portrays including Joan Baez.

The film is scheduled for release on Dec. 20.

12 YEARS A SLAVE HONORED

The announcement came earlier this week that director Steve McQueen and actress Lupita Nyong'o will be feted as a part of the Hollywood Film Awards for their work on "12 Years a Slave".  The film's profile has increased steadily since its premiere at Telluride and is aimed at a New York Film Festival screening within the week.  The Grio and The Hollywood Reporter both filed stories about the HFA that will include McQueen and Nyong'o:

NEBARSKA AND THE AFI

Alexander Payne's "Nebraska" was one of three films named this week as centerpieces for the American Film Institutes's Film Fest.  The other films announced were Ben Stiller's "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and Scott Cooper's "Out of the Furnace".  At least one of the films were likely added as a replacement for Bennett Miller's "Foxcatcher" which has now been pushed to a 2014 release. Other thoughts:  I’m personally dubious about “Saving Mr. Banks”.  Also, I’m really hot to see “American Hustle”, “Captain Phillips”, “Foxcatcher” and “The Monuments Men”.  “Walter Mitty” could really be a sleeper as could Spike Jonze’s “Her” and Jean Marc Vallee’s “Dallas Buyers Club”.

Thoughts: It’s telling to me that “August: Osage County” has almost no early support in this category.

Overall, in the Big Eight categories, the experts collectively have "12 Years a Slave" with five nominations, "Gravity" with four, Nebraska with three and two other possibles, "Inside Llewyn Davis" with two, "All is Lost" with one and one other possible and "The Past" with one possible nomination.  That has TFF #40 films with 14 nominations and four other possibilities.

It's n secret that I loved the Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis" and I also loved the music that is the backbone of the film.  The soundtrack doesn't drop until Nov. 12 but those of us that attended the Patron brunch this year were lucky enough to score a vinyl EP that includes 6 songs from the film ("Five Hundred Miles", "The Death of Queen Jane", "The Auld Triangle", "Green Green Rocky Road", "Farewell" and "Fare the Well/Dink's Song").
