As of this assessment, TFF #48 films are predicted to net 37 nominations with another 10 Alternates in play. An incredible14 TFF #48 films could have at least one Oscar nomination on Feb. 8th.

My other Best Picture predictions and what I expect that they're nominations will be:

Dune-10 nominations: Best Picture, Direction (Villenueve), Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Score, Costumes, Visual Effects, Sound and Makeup/Hair.  Also possible: Adapted Screenplay

West Side Story- 9 nominations: Best Picture, Direction (Spielberg), Supporting Actress (DeBose), Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Costumes and Sound.  Also possible: Makeup/Hair

Don't Look Up- 5 nominations: Best Picture, Original Screenplay, Editing, Score, Song.  Also possible Actor (DiCaprio)

Being the Ricardos- 3 nominations: Best Picture, Actress (Kidman) and Original Screenplay.  Also possible: Actor (Bardem)

CODA- 3 nominations: Best Picture, Supporting Actor (Kotsur) and Adapted Screenplay

tick, tick...BOOM- 2 nominations: Best Picture, Actor (Garfield).  Also possible: Sound

Licorice Pizza- 4 nominations: Best Picture, Direction (Anderson), Supporting Actor (Cooper), Original Screenplay.  Also possible: Actress (Haim) and Editing.

And right now I have House of Gucci the most nominated without getting a Best Picture nomination with 4: Best Actress (Gaga), Supporting Actor (Leto), Costumes and Makeup/Hair.

Last note here: I feel like Nightmare Alley is gaining ground.  I currently have it predicted for 2 nominations (Production Design and Costumes) with a shot at Supporting Actress (Blanchett) and Cinematography.  Since its Writers Guild nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay last week, I'm beginning to think that should it land an Oscar nomination in that category and if Blanchett lands in the five Supporting Actress nominees, Nightmare Alley might sneak into Best Picture and supplant Being the Ricardos or tick, tick...BOOM or even Don't Look Up.

LOTS OF GUILD NEWS TODAY

Really good day for Belfast, The Power of the dog and King Richard

TFF #48 Guild nominees:

Producers Guild: Belfast, King Richard, The Power of the Dog
Directors Guild: Kenneth Branagh/Belfast, Jane Campion/The Power of the Dog
Writers Guild: King Richard for Original Screenplay, The French Dispatch for Original Screenplay
Editors Guild: Belfast, King Richard, The Power of the Dog
Actors Guild (from two weeks ago): Cast nominees: Belfast and King Richard.  The Power the Dog had three individual acting nominees.

ASC NAMES ITS NOMINEES

The American Society of Cinematographers announced its nominees for the best work of 2021 on Tuesday.  In the feature film category two TFF #48 films made the grade.  Belfast and The Power of the Dog were among the five films named.  Others included Nightmare Alley, Dune and The Tragedy of Macbeth.  A number of Oscarologists reported that the ASC and Oscar normally match 4 for 5 each year.  This year's odd film out could have been West Side Story.

The cinematographers' guild will be matched today with guild nominations from the writers, the directors and the producers.  What that will tell us about possible Oscar nominations could be very interesting and enlightening.

ONLINE FILM CRITICS SOCIETY LOVES THE DOG

Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog won several major categories from OFCS which announced their winners on Monday.  The film won:

Best Picture, Direction (Campion), Actor (Cumberbatch), Supporting Actress (Dunst), Supporting Actor (Smit-McPhee), Adapted Screenplay, Editing and Cinematography and Original Score.

Other TFF #48 films that received recognition included The Lost Daughter which saw Olivia Colman named Best Lead Actress and Maggie Gyllenhaal was named for Best Debut Feature , The French Dispatch won Best Production Design,  Petite Maman was named one of ten Best Non-U.S. Features.

Peter Bogdanovich 1939-2022 / NSFC and The Golden Globes / MTFB Oscar Update: Best Picture, Direction and More / The Film Stage's Most Anticipated / Interviews and Profiles

PETER BOGDANOVICH 1939-2022

Peter Bogdanovich died on Thursday.  Over the past 20+ years he was a frequent presence at The SHOW beginning with his choice to Guest Direct the festival in 1998.  That year he programmed: Orson Welles Touch of Evil.  Bogdanovich's own Directed by John Ford was also featured at the 25th TFF.

Bogdanovich returned to T-ride a number of times thereafter including 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2018.  He was part of my first Telluride in 2006 as he was back at the fest with Directed by John Ford again.

His film legacy included: The Last Picture Show, What's Up Doc? Paper Moon, Saint Jack and Mask among others.  He was twice Oscar nominated for The Last Picture Show as Best Director and co-writer with Larry McMurtry.
On a different note, although never an attendee (at least to my knowledge) of the Telluride Film Festival, I have to also note the passing of Sidney Poitier.  Truly a giant in the world of film.
