INDIWIRE'S CRITICS' SURVEY OF THE FALL FESTS

Indiewire surveyed 137 critics and charged them with evaluating the films they had seen through the run of fall fests including Telluride, Venice, Toronto and New York'  Here's how TFF #48 films from that survey:

The overall #1 film from all four fests combined was Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog.

#5 Celina Sciamma's Petite Maman
#8 Sean Baker's Red Rocket
#9 Mia Hansen-Love's Bergman Island\
#11 Pablo Larrain's Spencer
#14 Mike Mill's C'mon C'mon
#15 Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Lost Daughter

C'mon C'mon was the critic's favorite specifically focused on Telluride alone.

The top three documentaries all played TFF #47: Flee, The Velvet Underground and The Rescue.
The Power of the Dog was also named Best Directed Film.
Best Performances from all of the fests combined included Benedict Cumberbatch in The Power of the Dog at #3 and Kristen Stewart in Spencer at #4.

TODD HAYNES ON THE VELVET UNDERGROUND

As mentioned above, Todd Haynes' doc about The Velvet Underground was named as one of the three best documentaries that played the fall festivals.  Haynes was recently featured in an interview for The Playlist.

Check out what Haynes has to say.  The interview is linked here.

BELFAST ADULTS ARE ALL SUPPORTING

Focus Features has announced that all of the adult actors in Kenneth Branagh's Belfast will be campaigned as Supporting players for the awards season.  That puts an end to speculation that both Jamie Dornan and Caitriona Balfe would possibly be categorized as leading performers.  Now, child actor Judah Hill will be the lone Belfast cast member who is campaigned as a leading actor.

Variety's Clayton Davis broke the details on Monday.  That story is linked here.

THINKING VAL IS POSSIBLE

A flurry of positive responses out of Cannes and the combo of A24 and Amazon Studios is making me think a TFF bid for the documentary Val-about actor Val Kilmer- could be in the offing.  You can see above how serious I am as I included the film as one of this week's Ten Bets at #9.

The doc reportedly makes use of hundreds of hours of footage shot by Kilmer himself.

Here's the Cannes trailer from YouTube:

ICYMI: TFF Wants You Vaxxed / Future Telluride: Inarritu's Current Project / Velvet Underground Teaser

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: TFF WANTS YOU VAXXED

I'm re-running this post that I originally put up on Saturday:

TFF #48 Passholders received an email from the festival last Friday informing us that we would need to provide proof of vaccination against Covid-19.  The letter also requested that  if we knew of people that were planning to attend the fest without a pass or were planning to attend free screenings that they would also need to be able to produce proof of vaccination.  Here's that language from the email:

For any friends you may know who are intending to join us without passes, we appreciate you sharing this information. Individual indoor venues will have a vaccination card check point at each Box Office, for those wishing to buy individual tickets or enter a free screening.

Here's the complete text of the email to passholders:

We are grateful that you are considering returning to the Telluride Film Festival to join us after last year’s hiatus. We view our upcoming festival as an opportunity to celebrate renewal but with tremendous humility, acknowledging the tragic loss of life and social upheaval experienced around the globe.

Film is a magical instrument that often serves to bring people together – to celebrate it collectively, to experience emotions in the same room, and to live through the eyes of great artists as they point us toward a better future is something we are all looking forward to with delight.

To ensure a safe, as well as relaxed, few days in the mountains, we are asking all attendees who intend to join us this year to be vaccinated against Covid-19, as an act of kindness and community support, and to assist us in creating a secure environment for reconvening the Telluride experience.

Please take a moment to upload your vaccination card below. Receipt of this information will be required for admittance to Festival theaters and other indoor venues, including any shuttle services. We appreciate your understanding and commitment to a healthy re-opening of arts & culture experiences worldwide. For any friends you may know who are intending to join us without passes, we appreciate you sharing this information. Individual indoor venues will have a vaccination card check point at each Box Office, for those wishing to buy individual tickets or enter a free screening.

We are impatient for September to get here and to be together again. Take very good care until we see you!!

The wife and I submitted our proof of vaccination Saturday morning.

FUTURE TELLURIDE?  INARRITU'S CURRENT PROJECT

Set photo from Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Limbo via El Univeral

We've seen and heard whispers about TFF favorite Alejandro Gonzlaez Inarritu's ongoing film project which appears to be titled Limbo.

The Film Stage (via El Universal)  reported recently that filming in Mexico and set photos are giving some hints about what could be included as part of the plot/story of the film.  According to The Film Stage post:

"From their reporting comes word Limbo concerns the Mexican-American War, production having constructed an exact replica of the Chapultepec Castle—site for the 1847 Battle of Chapultepec, a turning point wherein thousands of Mexican soldiers were slain. (Peep their site for a set photo lest the copyright hammer fall upon us.) Considering other set photos feature more modern-looking costumes, perhaps there is some time-jumping in the plot as the director explores Mexican history."

Considering Inarritu's substantial track record at Telluride, you have to keep an eye out for this as a possible selection for TFF #49.

VELVET UNDERGROUND TEASER

Todd Haynes' documentary about the legendary band, The Velvet Underground, is set to play at Cannes within the next few days and there is some contemplation on my part that it could very well be a part of the TFF #48 lineup.

There's a  teaser for the new film now available for viewing on Cannes' official webpage for the film.

Ten Bets #1 for TFF #48 / Toronto's Early Line / Winners at Annecy

TEN BETS #1 FOR TFF #48

Well, here we are.  June 24th, 2021.  Roughly two months away from the start of TFF #48.  It's still not a guarantee but each day we get closer, the more confident I feel that we'll all be seeing each other in the San Juans in September...which sounds like a song title from a Crosby/Hope road picture doesn't it?

Here's this year's first actual attempt at a list of films that I feel like could be on the list for TFF #48 when that drops presumably on Sept. 1st.  As always, there are no "locks" on the Ten Bets- at least at this point- and fair warning, my normal track record for the initial Ten Bets each season is roughly 50%.

So, without further ado and drumroll please...

1) The Power of the Dog/Campion
2) Muhammad Ali/Burns, Burns and McMahon
3) The Card Counter/Schrader
4) Nightmare Alley/Del Toro
5) The Velvet Underground/Haynes
6) Bergman Island/Hansen-Love
7) Cow/Arnold
8) A Hero/Farhadi
9) Blonde/Dominik
10) The Story of Looking/Cousins

Don't discount the possibility of: Dune, Julia, Mothering Sunday, Petite Maman, Where Is Anne Frank?, Paris 13th District and The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

Again, grain of salt.

I'll update the Ten Bets list each week as the summer progresses right up to the final Ten Bets which is usually 20-25 bets) on Tuesday, August 31st.

TORONTO'S EARLY LINE

The Toronto International Film Festival dropped the titles of a dozen or so films that will be a part of this year's TIFF.  Unlike most normal announcements from TIFF, no premiere status was included.  The closest the statement came was to characterize Denis Villenueve's Dune as a World IMAX premiere.  Absent the specific premiere status I'm going to assume that any and all of the films are still possible for Telluride including Dune.  Other films of note in as far as Telluride potential that were included in the announcement today were:

Dune, Last Night in Soho, Petite Maman, Belfast, Les Bal des Folles, Lakewood and The Starling.

WINNERS AT ANNECY

The world's largest animated film fest, the Annecy Animation Festival has concluded in France with winning films announced last week.  Annecy is of some note to Telluride observers as films that have played there occasionally are programmed in T-ride over Labor Day weekend.

Big winners were: Flee and My Sunny Maad.  Flee won the top award at the fest, the Cristal.  Flee debuted at Sundance last January which normally precludes a slot in Telluride but there are rare exceptions and I feel like this could be one of those.

The film is being distributed in the United States by NEON.

Indiewire's Cannes Analysis Intrigues / Exploring Amazon / Images from Cannes Films / The Greatest at T-ride?

 INDIEWIRE'S CANNES ANALYSIS INTRIGUES

As I do each year, once the dust had settled from the announcement of the Cannes lineup last Thursday, I began looking at what industry focused websites were saying about the films chosen and not chosen trying to glom onto some nuggets that could point the way to possible Telluride titles.  The most intriguing, to me at any rate, was Eric Kohn's piece for Indiewire.  Here are some nuggets of interest from that article for those of us who are Telluride junkies.

1) The French Dispatch news...If you've been reading here the last couple of years, you've likely picked up on the notion that I'm hot to see this film play T-ride.  Wes Anderson snuck Rushmore into Telluride in 1998 and hasn't been back since.  I have been thinking that there was a chance that Anderson might return to Telluride last year and then again this year with the film and Kohn adds some fuel to that fire as he writes:

"Cannes held the door open for... titles that wanted to wait. “The French Dispatch,” Wes Anderson’s imaginary vision of 20th-century journalists, has been one of Searchlight’s most promising new titles for some time. The movie was set for a Cannes premiere last year and would have later played Telluride"

Yes indeed, Kohn reports that "Dispatch" would have played TFF #47 had it happened.  To me that suggests the possibility that last year's plan could become this year's reality.  Other factors suggesting that it might play: From Searchlight, already announced fall release date post-Telluride (Oct. 22) and no suggestion of its premiere status re: its announced play at the New York Film Fest.

2) Films NOT in Cannes (barring something still to be announced-and there are other films that are still to be announced):

Dune
Soggy Bottom
The Power of the Dog
The Card Counter
Spencer

All or none of which might land a slot at Venice and then???

3) A couple of docs to keep an on: Kohn mentions a few documentaries that we maybe should keep an eye on moving toward Labor Day weekend.

The Val Kilmer doc "Val" is one.  Andrea Arnold's Cow, Todd Haynes The Velvet Underground and Oliver Stone's JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass all seem like possibilities.

EXPLORING AMAZON

My look at film distributors that have had a significant presence at Telluride over the past five years continues today with Amazon Studios.

Here's their complete past at TFF:

2016: Manchester by the Sea
2017: Wonderstruck
2018: Cold War. Peterloo
2019: The Aeronauts, The Report
2020: All In; The Fight for Democracy

Best shots at TFF #48:

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain
Being the Ricardos (if it's done)
Val (see above)

AND...if the MGM deal is done and Amazon has control of the MGM inventory???  In play could be:

The Untitled Paul Thomas Anderson project (Soggy Bottom)
Ridley Scott's House of Gucci
George Miller's Three Thousand Years of Longing
Joe Wright's Cyrano

IMAGES FROM CANNES FILMS

The Film Stage has put together a collection of images from a number of the films that were announced for Cannes last week including some for films that might make the cut for TFF #48.

Examples: The French Dispatch:

And Andrea Arnold's Cow:

THE GREATEST AT T-RIDE?

Over the weekend I saw that PBS had dropped a teaser for the latest documentary from Ken Burns; Florentine Films: Muhammad Ali.

The teaser reveals that the doc will land on Sept. 19th which suggests that we could have a shot a seeing it in the San Juans over Labor Day weekend.

Cannes Spec heats Up /A Look at SPC

 CANNES SPEC HEATS UP

With the official announcement of the Cannes Film Festival lineup now just two weeks away (June 3), the guessing game about what films make the list is warming up.  As always here, a reminder that, historically, Cannes and Telluride have had a substantial overlap of films in their official selections.

Now, does that continue in this year where we still have Covid concerns, that traditional sharing of titles may be lessened, increased, skewed...

But I'm going to run for awhile on the assumption that there will be that connection between the two fests that has been true for quite some time and that's an average of about 8 or so films that play both.

Just this past week I ran across big "Cannes lists" from Indiewire, Screen Daily and World of Reel and put together a list of TFF possibilities that popped up.

All three publications included: Jacques Audiard's Paris 13th District and Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch.  However, Screen Daily reports that Searchlight has not yet committed to premiering on the Croisette and is still gaming out what it feels would be the best release strategy for the highly anticipated film.

Many films that I feel have a shot at TFF #48's lineup are listed in two of the publications including:

Asghar Farhadi's A Hero (IND, WOR)
Andrea Arnold's Cow (IND, SD)
Michelangelo Frammartino's The Hole (IND, SD)
Eva Husson's Mothering Sunday (IND, SD)
Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth (IND, WOR)
Todd Haynes' The Velvet Underground (IND, SD)
Ari Folman's Where Is Anne Frank (IND, WOR)
Mia Hansen Love's Bergman Island (WOR, SD)
Francois Ozon's Everything Went Fine (WOR, SD)
Sean Penn's Flag Day (WOR, SD)

{IND= Indiewire  WOR = World of Reel  SD= Screen Daily}

The complete articles from each publication are linked below:

Check them out and see what other titles you think might screen at Cannes before coming to Colorado on Labor Day weekend.

A LOOK AT SPC

Today we continue our stroll through film distributors that have had strong presences over the last five years at Telluride,.  Last Monday I got that started with a look at Netflix which has had 16 (maybe 17) films play at TFF in that time span.  Matching it (or nearly matching it ) has been Sony Pictures Classics with 16 films in five years.

Beyond the five year limitation I placed on looking at recent TFFs and distributors, SPC and Telluride's relationship has been much longer than that.  So, unless the world stops spinning, you can expect to see some SPC titles this year as in many others.

SPC is coming off a very successful one-two punch with last year's The Father picking up two Oscars among six nominations (Anthony Hopkins for Best Actor and Florian Zeller and Christopher Hampton for Best Adapted Screenplay) and The Truffle Hunters, which didn't make the Oscar final list of five nominated documentary feature films but won a number of critics' awards and was universally beloved.

Currently in SPC's hands and with what seems to be Telluride potential:

Clint Bentley's Jockey
Ty Roberts 12 Mighty Orphans
Andreas Koefoed's The Lost Leonardo
Julie Cohen and Betsy West's Julia
Eva Husson's Mothering Sunday
Benjamin Millepied's Carmen

And then there's a couple of real wild cards:

Zachary Fuhrer's John Prine: Hello in There which I really thought was going to play TFF #47 last year and then it was not on the announced list.  I swear I saw someplace that it was going to be released or pop-up at some other fest virtually...but I can't find any evidence that happened. SPC acquired the doc in February of 2019.  So???

And then there's Pedro Almodovar's latest Madres Paralelas (Parallel Mothers).  Its IMDb Pro entry says it's a 2022 release and that it's "filming" as of March 10th.  But after Almodovar's triumphant return to Telluride screenings with Pain and Glory at TFF #46...who knows?  OK, it's much more likely that it screens at next year's Cannes and then maybe TFF #49.

At this point I have no strong intell or intuitions about any of these SPC films.   If you made me I might point at Julia, Mothering Sunday and Jockey and I'd likely throw in the Prine doc because I'm stubborn.
