Master Disaster/Guessing Telluride/Invitation

Good Monday from San Diego!

Here's where I was (at least early) yesterday!

Slide Rock Canyon north of Sedona, AZ.

MASTER DISASTER

It was a roller coaster day yesterday.  I'm on the road...literally driving from Flagstaff, AZ. to San Diego, CA. yesterday...while catching the occasional tweet at gas stops and at lunch...

And so as the day evolved, I got the news that "The Master" WILL play Venice after all...despite not being announced last week and even reported denials that it would...

As you know, I have often pointed out that Venice and Telluride have little overlap...so  this probably means the death knell for its Telluride chances...which had begun to look somewhat promising in light of the lack of the film on Venice's list nor Toronto's.

Then late yesterday the word that IT WILL PLAY TORONTO TOO!

Now virtually every pundit that plays this game has agreed that Telluride is a non-starter...and they're very likely right...but...the addition of Toronto dates actually gives me a bit of hope...what few films that do make the Venice to Telluride run generally play Toronto as well...so maybe...

And then there has been a good deal of discussion that part of the Venice/Toronto sluggishness in announcing has been the result of Anderson's desire to present it in the 70mm format he shot it in.  Some commenters think that, too, could complicate it's possibility of Telluride.  But The Playlist points out (and an MTFB reader confirms) that Telluride can actually and has shown 70mm in the past...so...

Finally, there's also a lot of talk about the impossibility of dates and doubt about simultaneous play dates and locations of Anderson, Phoenix, Hoffman etc.  I'm not all that sure that is really much of an impediment.  If everyone wants it to happen in all three locales, I'm pretty sure that all involved could find a way to make it happen.  And I really do think Harvey Weinstein likes to have his big pony in the San Juans...

I'm saying, yes, "The Master" is probably not going to play T-ride...but all hope is NOT lost.

GUESSING TELLURIDE

I do this "guessing" Telluride thing for about 6 months of the year and then do awards season in the context of those films that do play Telluride the other 6 months of the year.  But now, with only a month left to some of the serious peeps in the business of film blogging are casting their   Kris Tapley of HitFix/InContention is among the very best and he has his Telluride prognostication post (along with Oscar spec).  You can find it here:

Highlights of his prognostications include his feel that "Rust and Bone" "No" and "Amour" all have a good shot..as have I.

He also have a vibe for "The Silver Linings Playbook"...I agree and Tapley suggests Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut "Quartet" which would thrill me...I'd love nothing more than to see Hoffman on Colorado Ave.  But I have reservations that it's likely to occur.

Tapley also goes with "Midnight's Children" and Matteo Garrone's "Reality" as likely to show in addition to "Hyde Park on Hudson".  I'm pretty high on MC and "Hyde Park" being there, less so about "Reality".

And finally, Tapley has one big surprise guess, and he admits it really is just a hunch...that Robert Lorenz's "Trouble with the Curve" appears along with Mr. Eastwood.  That would be incredible!

Finally, as a way of comparing...look at Mr. Tapley's prediction for last year's fest:

You'll find that he was 5 of 7 on films he called "likely" and 3 of 4 on "Quite Possible".  He was also very good at what wouldn't be playing.

INVITATION

To the Second "Guide to the Ride, Flow of the Show" at 5PM on Friday, Aug. 31 at The River Club (550 Depot) in Telluride.  We'll talk about the festival and film and have a refreshment or two!

Ten Bets #6/Invitation/Master Chances/Redford???

Good Monday on the road to California!

The CEO (Bob)  and I (Bing) are visiting the Golden State for a few days.  Going to see family and friends and a site or two.  I'll be blogging, though it may not be quite as involved as it would be if I weren't this cose to the beach!

TEN BETS #6

Last week's Ten Bets:

1) Amour
2) Rust and Bone
3) Beyond the Hills
4) On the Road
5) Midnight's Children
6) The Central Park Five
7) Bromberg's Chaplin
8) Hyde Park on Hudson
9) Like Someone in Love
10) Something in the Air

This week's Ten Bets:

1) Amour
2) Rust and Bone
3) Midnight's Children
4) On the Road
5) Beyond the Hills
6) The Central Park Five
7) Bromberg's Chaplin
8) Hyde Park on Hudson
9) The Reluctant Fundamentalist
10) Hannah Arendt

Still solidly in the mix: "No", Something in the Air", "Song for Marion".  This past week saw the eruption of rumor that "Cloud Atlas" and "The Master" are still possibilities fro Telluride.

INVITATION

Another reminder to join me at The River Club on Friday, Aug. 31 at 5:00PM for the Second Annual "Guide to the Ride; Flow of the SHOW".  Last year was a lot of fun and we're going to try our level best to have a great time again this year.  So, come, enjoy.  We may have a special guest or two...we're trying anyway.

MASTER CHANCES

As I'm sure you're aware, the announcement of lineups for Tornoto's Galas and Venice last week both did NOT have Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" raising my hopes and some speculation that the film will make the trip to the San Juans for Labor Day.

The LA Times included T-ride in their "what's going to happen with "The Master" article here:
http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/moviesnow/la-et-mn-master-release-date-moves-up-to-sept-14-20120727,0,5710653.story

Eugene Novikov of Film Blather also tweeted the possibility:

"THE MASTER's release date shift increases the odds of a Telluride appearance, though reduces the gobsmacking awesomeness of that happening."

Regular readers will have discerned that the increased possibility is likely to make me pass out...

REDFORD

And finally, The Salt Lake City Tribune suggest Robert Redford might have his latest "The Company You Keep" make a stop in Telluride as well...I say "bring it on"!  Here's that link:

Invitation/New Master Date/Best of the Week/Trouble with the Curve

Good Saturday Everyone!

INVITATION

To the Second "Guide to the Ride, Flow of the Show" at 5PM on Friday, Aug. 31 at The River Club (550 Depot) in Telluride.  We'll talk about the festival and film and have a refreshment or two!

NEW MASTER DATE

Late news from yesterday is that The Weinstein Company has moved the limited release date of Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" to Sept. 14th. That essentially means that if it is going to play ANY festival that Telluride is now probably the most likely...

I have linked multiple posts:

TROUBLE  WITH THE CURVE

Nowhere on the lists of films announced this week for either Toronto and Venice will you find "Trouble wit the Curve" the baseball movie starring Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams and Justin Timberlake and directed by    Robert Lorenz.  In all likelihood if it plays a festival that would most likely be New York...but you never know.  Rope of Silicon has first images of the film:

Another Venice Title?/To the Wonder/Oscar Changes/Coming Attractions

Good Friday Everyone...

YOU'RE INVITED

To the Second "Guide to the Ride, Flow of the Show" at 5PM on Friday, Aug. 31 at The River Club (550 Depot) in Telluride.  We'll talk about the festival and film and have a refreshment or two!

ANOTHER VENICE TITLE

For those who may have missed it in all the flurry of activity surrounding the announcement of the film lineup for the 69th Venice Film Festival yesterday there was a brief note later in the day that one further title would be added to the competition lineup in the next few days.

After the initial announcement, there was , understandably, widespread reporting that Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" was not to be found on the Venice list.  But it seems that assumption may have been premature.  Most of the speculation late yesterday is that "The Master" will be the late addition to the lineup.

Joaquin Phoenix in "The Master"

There still remains some thought that Telluride is in the mix to show the film as well.  New York and Fantastic Fest are also in the thick of the rumor mill....and Fantastic Fest seems all but certain at this point.

TO THE WONDER

I have posted very little about Terrence Malick's follow up to last year's "The Tree of Life" largely because I stalked "Tree" last year and it ultimately was a fool's errand.  Now we have seen the film named for both Toronto and Venice this week and there are some who think that it may well hit Telluride as well, though I remain mostly dubious.  Nevertheless, I am passing along a link to a Playlist story that looks at what is known about the film...and who knows...maybe it does make an appearance in the Rockies on Labor Day weekend.

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/a-study-of-faith-love-what-the-title-means-emerges-in-new-plot-details-for-terrence-malicks-to-the-wonder-20120724

OSCAR RULES CHANGES

Some alterations from The Academy about Oscar campaigning are detailed both by Anne Thompson and by The Hollywood Reporter...

COMING ATTRACTIONS

Lee Daniels had a major success with "Precious" but if reports are to be believed may have a clunker on his hands with his Cannes film "The Paperboy"  News now of his third film and the casting of Robin Williams as Dwight D. Eisenhower in "Th Butler".  Perhaps it will be the antidote to the less than stellar reception "The Paperboy" has received thus far.

"The Millennial Rapture," Koji Wakamatsu (Japan)
"Three Sisters," Wang Bing (France-Hong Kong-China)

If past history is any guide, you can expect about 3 of these titles to also appear at Telluride and your best bets would likely be : Mire Nair's "The Reluctant Fundamentalist", andOlivier Assassyas' "Something in the Air".  Perhaps Susanne Bier's "Love is All You Need".

Additionally, it doesn't appear to me that Venice's choices really undermne anything I've been contemplating as Telluride possibilities.

It may reduce "Something in the Air's" chances a bit...maybe enough for it to change positions on Monday's "Ten Bets" list...

Here is some analysis of this morning's announcement from the Blogosphere:

The Playlist:
The Wrap:
The Hollywood Reporter:

HOT RUMORS

It's an interesting read...I'm talking about Deadline.com's post dissecting the Oscar potential of the Toronto lineup of Galas and Special Presentations that were announced on Tuesday.  Why?

Because of the hints, rumors and such concerning our festival in the Rockies that's now only 5 weeks away.

Now, allow me to spoil the article by relaying the pertinent portions of text...

First, there's the "Cloud Atlas" info:

"It’s also known that Warners screened this for Telluride consideration but we will have to wait and see if it shows up there too."

Three things here...First, I think "Cloud Atlas" doesn't really sound like a Telluride-y film, BUT, I'm pretty hot to see it AND Warner's must think it's very special to make the pitch.

And second, we now have an answer to the question concerning which of the "majors" was exhibiting their wares for Telluride during the L.A. Film Fest...or, at least we can make that guess.  It may be wrong, but putting 2 and 2 together and that's what you get...

Third, it makes you wonder if "Cloud Atlas" is the ONLY thing WB pitched...other films in their stable that they might have additionally had some interest in promoting for T-ride include: Ben Affleck's "Argo", Robert Lorenz's "Trouble with The Curve" and Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby".

Intriguing, isn't it?

Next, there's this nugget from the same story:

"The Sundance hit, The Sessions (formerlyThe Surrogate)  should be
a winner for (Fox) Searchlight with strong award-calibre performances from Helen Hunt and John Hawkes. The studio also wanted it to play Telluride but that fest doesn’t like going second to Sundance..."

Now, I've said it before and I'll say it again...T-ride excepted "An Education" from the "No Sundance" rule...so, perhaps, might they again for "The Sessions"?

It's at least a possibility...

And finally, toward the end of the story came this little tidbit:

"Where’s Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master rumored for all three Fall fests? Stay tuned . It’s only the beginning."

Rumored for  "ALL THREE FESTS" including Telluride???  That's at least a little ray of sunshine about the possibility.

But we now know from the Venice announcement that "The Master" isn't playing there and Toronto doesn't seem likely to add it after their Galas and SPecial Presentations announcement...so that only leaves Telluride as the last remaining possible of the "three".  Fingers still crossed.
All of it making me kind of dizzy...of course it could all be bunk...and not a bit of this makes me think you'll see any of these films added to the "Ten Bets" list next Monday...but wouldn't it be COOL?

Anyway, since this is what we start with today, we'll keep the focus on a couple of films mentioned above...

LATE EDIT:  VENICE OFFICIALS SAY THEY HAVE ONE MORE COMPETITION FILM TO ANNOUNCE...

CLOUD ATLAS

This is a BIG film and regardless of it's fate vis-a-vis Telluride, I want to see it badly.

A couple of sources I frequent were up yesterday with first pics from the film and some analysis about the nature of it.  Take a look at The Playlist:

And also Screen Crush:

"Cloud Atlas's" IMDb entry: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1371111/

More Toronto Musings/Margarethe/Pi VIew

Good Wednesday to All!

MORE TORONTO MUSINGS

After the announced first wave of Galas and Special Presentations from Toronto yesterday I made my usual observation that there is a significant overlap between the Toronto and T-ride in terms of films they will share and that history bears this out.  I've gone back the last five years to come up with the list from each year of films that played in both places.  Here that is:

TORONTO/TELLURIDE OVERLAP

2011:

Albert Nobbs
Butter
A Dangerous Method
The Artist
The Descendants
Shame
We Need to Talk About Kevin
In Darkness
Crazy Horse
Into the Abyss
The Island President
Footnote
The Forgiveness of Blood
Goodbye First Love
A Separation
Pina
Le Harve
The Kid with a Bike
The Turin Horse
Bonsai
The Story of Film

2010:

Black Swan
The King’s Speech
127 Hours

As you can see, it's rather extensive each year.  On average the festivals share 16-17 films and 6-8 are in Toronto's Gala or Special Presentation category.  So the trick is figuring out what those might be...

MARGARETHE

I noticed yesterday that Toronto has programmed Margarethe Von Trotta's "Hannah Arendt".  That reminded me that Von Trotta had been feted in Telluride as a  2009 tributee and made me think that it's entirely possible that we could see "Hannah" in a few weeks in the San Juans.

Von Trotta's "Visions" was shown in 2009 as a part of the tribute and Janet McTeer appears in the film as does Barbara Sukowa in the lead role..  McTeer, who was in "Albert Nobbs" last year in T-ride (and Oscar nominated as a result) was also a guest of the fest back in 2000 with "The King is Alive".  Sukowa was with Von Trotta in Telluride in 2009. Perhaps we'll see all three women in town.

PI VIEW

The interwebs all aquiver today with the posting of a trailer for Ang Lee's "Life of Pi".  It's pretty.  See below:

So what to make of this?  First, let's identify what "Ten Bets" (or near/have been "Ten Bets") that are on Toronto's list:

"Midnight's Children"
"Hyde Park on Hudson"
"Rust and Bone"
"No"

Other films that I have been noodling as Telluride possibles that showed up this morning on Toronto's list:

"Argo"
"The Silver Linings Playbook"
"Quartet"
"The Impossible"
"The Hunt"
"The Sapphires"

And then there are the films on the Toronto list that probably AREN'T going to be Telluride bound...but maybe, sort of could be OR I wish they would be:

"Cloud Atlas"
"The Place Beyond the Pines"
"Great Expectations"
"Much Ado About Nothing"
"To the Wonder"
"Anna Karenina"
"The Reluctant Fundamentalist"
"The Company You Keep"
"Reality"
"The Sessions"

And, as I mentioned above, this announced list isn't the complete Toronto lineup.  They'll be adding as we go along.

Notable MIA's: "Amour", "Killing Them Softly", "Lincoln", "Django Unchained" and, of course, "The Master".

MORE RELUCTANT NEWS

Venice should announce their lineup later this week and have announced that Mire Nair's "The Reluctant Fundamentalist" will open their fest.  Included below are a few pieces that shed some light on that film:

MASTER FANTASTIC?

Speculation via The Playlist that "the Master" will be in Austin, Texas for Fantastic Fest in late September...the "evidence" sounds pretty good:

I'll still hold onto the reed that it's 3 weeks after Telluride so we could still see it in Colorado.
