MTFB SPECIAL POST: DAVID LYNCH 1946-2025

MTFB SPECIAL POST: DAVID LYNCH 1946-2025

David Lynch passed last Wednesday.  He was 78.  He would have been 79 today.

I recall seeing The Elephant Man...which is a fine film.  Then Dune... not a fine film.  Then Blue Velvet...and,  man, did that click.  Made me go back and find Eraserhead...which still warps my brain today.  Wild at Heart...was fine.  Then season one of  Twin Peaks.  I well and truly obsessed.  Bought books.  Bought memorabilia.  Did the Twin Peaks tour east of Seattle.  Then season two..

It took me awhile to really get on board with Fire Walk with Me.  Then Mulholland Drive...which initially I thought disappointing but when I came back to it a few years later, realized that's likely his best film.

Digging through my Telluride Film stuff, Lynch was in town for the 13th Fest with Blue Velvet and Eraserhead. Twin Peaks at the 16th Fest but according to the program Lynch did not attend. Industrial Symphony #1 screened at TFF #17.

Lynch returned in 1999 as a Tribute recipient.  TFF screened The Straight Story.  I love The Straight Story.

Mulholland Drive, though not in the program, screened at T-ride in 2001.  My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done was a sneak preview at the 2009 edition of TFF with Lynch listed as an Executive Producer.  I thought Lynch might be in town...but to the best of my knowledge, he wasn't.

He was a four time Oscar nominee (Direction and Adapted Screenplay for The Elephant Man. Direction for Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive.  He won the Plame d'Or in 1990 for Wild at Heart.  He also won Best Director at Cannes in 2001 for Mulholland Drive.  He was a nine time Emmy nominee all for Twin Peaks and Twin Peaks: The Return.  And, of course, he was awarded an Honorary Oscar in 2020.

His film changed film and there aren't too many folks about whom you can say that and really mean it.  I'm going to miss his singular vision but I am glad we got Twin Peaks: The Return a few years ago.  That gave us one more chance to see, hear and feel The Master at work.
