Hear the Jazz Go Down / Late Breaking: Variety Reports on Cannes / Poland Has Some Thoughts / New Doc from Morris

HEAR THE JAZZ GO DOWN

Telluride Jazz Festival Announces 2020 Lineup: The Beach Boys ...

With apologies to Dire Straits for lifting the lyrics from Sultans of Swing to title this item...

The Telluride Jazz Festival announced that they will postpone until 2021.  The Jazz Fest had been scheduled for Aug. 13-15 but will forgo 2020 altogether and opt to "wait until next year" according to a post on the Jazz fest's website.

The closing sentence reveals that the plan is to have the fest back on the same weekend in August of 2021.

The cancellation or postponement as the fest seems to prefer is worrisome from the Film Fest's perspective as Jazz takes place just a couple of weeks prior to Film. Comparing the two fests is not exact.  The Jazz Fest is centered during each day at Town Park and Elks Park and then there are "After Dark" performances in a variety of venues around town.  Nevertheless, despite some differences in terms of structure, the cancellation of the 2020 edition of Jazz Fest makes one take pause.

The announcement from Jazz Fest organizers is here.

LATE BREAKING: VARIETY REPORTS ON CANNES

Variety's Elsa Keslassy posted a story early this morning with a number of interesting reveals about the Cannes Film Festival.

- Cannes will announce their list of 50 or so titles that would have played there on June 3.
- Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch will be on that list along with ThomasVinterberg's Another Round, Francois Ozon's Summer '85, Apichatpong Weerasethakul's Memoria, Sofia Coppola's On the Rocks, Gia Coppola's Mainstream and Naomi Kawase's Come Morning.
- The French Dispatch is "likely" to world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.  The article suggests that Coppola might also go to TIFF.
- It appears that the notion of some co-operation between Cannes and Venice has disappeared.
- Venice appears to have landed Nanni Moretti's Tre Piani and Maiwenn's DNA meaning they won't be on the Cannes list next Wednesday.

If the claims are true, it implies that The French Dispatch and On the Rocks may be off the list for TFF #47.

The complete article is here with other info including other films expected to be announced for Cannes next week and a list of films that are said to be holding off for Cannes 2021.

LATE BREAKING: NO NETFLIX FOR FALL FESTS (added at 11:00am EDT on Thurs.5/28)

It is rare that I deviate from the publishing schedule for MTFB but this news justifies and additional post today.  Anne Thompson at Indiewire has reported that Netflix has determined that they will be sending no films to any of the major fall fests Telluride included.

That report came late yesterday.

The news means that a number of high profile projects are no longer in play for TFF as well Venice, Toronto and New York.

Titles from Netflix that have been a part of the conversation:  Mank, Hillbilly Elegy, I'm Thinking of Ending Things, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and White Tiger.

The news could impact Telluride considerably as Netflix has been a major presence at the fest over the last few years:

2015: Beasts of No Nation, Winer on Fire
2016: The Ivory Game, Into the Inferno
2017: First They Killed My Father, Wormwood
2018: Roma, Dovlatov, Girl, Reversing Roe, The Other Side of the Wind, They'll Love Me When I'm Dead
2019: Marriage Story, The Two Popes, Tell Me Who I Am, Inside Bill's Brain

Thompson's claim is pretty definitive as she writes:

"As awards groups adjust to the evolving post-pandemic reality, so will the studios. And the first up is everyone’s favorite Oscar insurgent, Netflix: While it will provide sponsorship for some major festivals in 2020, it’s not planning to send any of their films or talent to attend them."

Thompson's complete article is linked here.

POLAND HAS SOME THOUGHTS

Movie City News | Gurus of Gold - All the latest Hollywood News ...

Move City News' David Poland posted a very extensive article on Monday that takes a look and offers thoughts and prescriptions to Fall Fail Fests including Telluride.  It's interesting.

Poland talks about what he perceives as the conditions that would need to be met for both Telluride and Toronto to occur in something of a normal state.  He also addresses the notion of what virtual versions of both fests might or could look like.  He also talks about potential piracy problems and ultimately suggests that he thinks the window for both fests to make a definitive decision is about a month.

We'll see.

NEW DOC FROM MORRIS

Errol Morris is working on a new documentary focused on 60's counter-culture figure Timothy Leary.  The film's working title "A Film by Errol Morris".  Indiewire reports that the film is inspired by the memoir of Laery companion Joanna Harcourt-Smith.

The film is being produced by and for Showtime.  No release date is included in the article but there is a teaser which says the film is "coming soon".  From YouTube:

In normal times I'd be eyeballing this as a possible/probable addition to the TFF lineup but the lack of a release date and the vagaries of Covid-19 changes that calculus.  I think it's still possible that it could play but that feeling isn't nearly as strong as I would customarily have for an Errol Morris project.

Not an Official Journalist but Still a Guru / Trafficking in Rumor / TFF Is in Men's Journal's Top Ten / Quick Notes

Tuesday.

NOT AN OFFICIAL JOURNALIST BUT STILL A GURU

As many of you know, I was denied "journalist" status for this year's festival.  That happened over three weeks ago.

But, I have been asked back by Movie City News to participate again this year as one their Gurus of Gold.  I'll be tasked with making "educated" predictions for this year's Oscar season.  MCN Guru guru Ray Pride emailed me, as well as other past Gurus, last Thursday.

As you might expect, I accepted the invitation.

I'm not sure yet when the Guru-ing will commence but you can be sure I'll be letting you know here when I do know.

Incidentally, it's also likely that I'll be writing an occasional Oscar-centric article or two for another film-centric web outfit but I'm going to keep that under cover until that's more assured.

TRAFFICKING IN RUMOR

Sooo...I'm relatively certain that I have a line on another film that will be playing the 46th iteration of the Telluride Film Festival.  This is one of those "All the President's Men" things.  I have two independent sources telling me that a film that is currently NOT an expected title, is currently NOT on my latest Ten Bets or Bonus Bets list but IS a film that I mentioned before.

I can also tell you that this mystery film is curiously related to a film that we are very sure will play the fest.

I'm hesitant to name the film without one more piece of corroboration and I'm spooking around for that.

Should the film pan out, it could well be an Oscar player (at least a couple of Oscar prediction sites have the film in their early predictions list).

More as it develops...if it develops.

TFF IS IN MEN'S JOURNAL'S TOP TEN

Men's Journal recently published an article entitled "The 10 Best Summer Festivals in America" and making the list is the one and only Telluride Film Festival.

The article names TFF as "one of the most prestigious" film festivals.

The article also includes the following fests:

Summerfest-Milwaukee, WI.
Taste of Chicago-Chicago, IL.
Vermont Brewers Festival, Burlington, VT.
The Great Taste of the Midwest, Madison, WI.
Made in America Music Festival, Philadelphia, PA.
Feast Portland, Portland, OR.
Wanderlust Festival, Chicago, IL.
Beer, Bourbon and BBQ-Multiple Locations
Newport Folk Festival, Newport, VA.

QUICK NOTES

***The New York Film Fest is supposed to announce the rest of their main slate films today at noon eastern time.  I'll likely post an update here with the ramifications of that announcement as soon as possible.

***Jordan Ruimy wrote at World of Reel yesterday that Agnes Varda's swan song-Varda by Agnes-will play Telluride as well as Toronto and New York.  The NYFF announcement later today may provide a confirmation.  We'll see.

***Deadline reports that Gavin O'Connor's The Way Back (formerly Torrance) starring Ben Affleck has been moved by Warners to March, 2020.  That likely means we can take it off the list of possible films for TFF consideration.

Here's the current Ten Bets with Bonus Bets:

10) The Aeronauts
9) Ford v. Ferrari
8) The Two Popes
7) Pain and Glory
6) Uncut Gems
5) Judy
4) Motherless Brooklyn
3) Marriage Story
2) Portrait of a Lady on Fire
1) Parasite

"Bonus Bets":

Bonus 1) The Truth
Bonus 2) Varda by Agnes
Bonus 3) First Cow
Bonus 4) Family Romance LLC
Bonus 5) Country Music

Telluride Dominates Venice / The First Gurus / The Front Runner Makes History / Podcasts: ScreenTalk, Variety, Awards Daily / Vote People!

Good Monday to all...

TELLURIDE DOMINATES VENICE

Films that played TFF #45 were well represented among the films that won major prizes at this weekend's conclusion of the Venice Film Festival with Alfonso Cuaron's Roma winning the biggest of the prizes as it was named winner of the Golden Lion.

The Favourite also scored winning the Grand Jury prize (largely regarded as the runner-up prize to the Golden Lion) as well as Best Actress for Olivia Colman's performance as Queen Anne.

Additionally, the Dareen Aronofsky produced Virtual Reality presentation: Spheres was named Best VR.  Spheres played at TFF #45 last week.

Complete winners from Venice are here from Variety and also from Indiewire.

THE FIRST GURUS

With the Toronto International Film Festival in full swing and both Telluride and Venice in the books for 2018, The Gurus of Gold have cast their first ballots attempting to discern this year's top candidates fro Best Picture.

Among the top ten vote-getters from "festival films" are Telluride '18 films: First Man, Boy Erased, Roma, The Front Runner and The Favourite.  Also mentioned are The Old Man and the Gun and Can You Ever Forgive Me?

The complete first wave of the Gurus is linked here.

THE FRONT RUNNER MAKES HISTORY

Jason Reitman's The Front Runner starring Hugh Jackman as former Senator (and Presidential candidate) Gary Hart will make history as it will be the first major motion picture to released on national election day, Nov. 6.

PODCASTS: VARIETY'S PODCAST FEATURES NICOLE KIDMAN

Kris Tapley's latest podcast was recorded at Telluride with Nicole Kidman who talks about both films that she had playing at TFF #45: Destroyer and Boy Erased.  Kidman is getting some buzzy talk about possible Oscar nominations for both roles.  Lead for Destroyer and Supporting for Boy Erased.

And finally, here's the link to Sasha Stone's (Awards Daily) wrap-up from the Telluride Film Fest.  The podcast features Mark Johnson of Awards Circuit, Jeff Wells of Hollywood Elsewhere and some other guy that may have accidentally stumbled into the same films they were seeing (yea, it's me).

A First Look at Dog Eat Dog / Poland and Wells Talking Oscar / What's to Come This Week

Welcome to Monday film fans...

A FIRST LOOK AT DOG EAT DOG

I've been saying for some time that we may well see Paul Schrader's latest, Dog Eat Dog starring Nicolas Cage and Willem Dafoe on the list of films that play TFF #43.

The film played at Cannes to reasonably good reviews and Schrader has certainly been a frequent visitor at Telluride.

We got a new trailer for the film over the weekend.  It's above and here's coverage:

POLAND AND WELLS TALK OSCAR

David Poland at Movie City News was up this weekend with his first take on the possible Oscar scene for this year.  Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere was also up this weekend with  a critique of the Poland article as well.

Films that we're pretty sure about for Telluride and films that might be T-ride bound that are addressed by both posts are:  Probable T-riders Poland suggests for Best Picture: Manchester by the Sea, Bleed for This, La La Land, Moonlight.  Possible T-riders:  The Founder, Allied, The Accountant.

Poland's piece is here:

Well's' analysis of the Poland post is here (needless to say, he's not necessarily on the same page as Poland):

WHAT'S TO COME THIS WEEK

Image result for toronto film festival logo

Image result for new york film festival logo

We're expecting the third wave announcement from Toronto this week as well as the announcement from the New York Film Festival of the rest of its lineup.

Last year both sets of information were very valuable in nailing down as many as seven films that would play at TFF #42.  It might be more than that as last year was a tad anomalous in that TFF and NYFF didn't share as many titles as they often have.

Whatever the case, we ought to have good intell by the end of the week on a number of films that will probably play TFF #43.

That's it for this Monday.  More to follow...

Oscar Matters: The View from David Poland / A New Look at "Spotlight" / Directors Talk: Fukunaga and Gavron

Thursday has dawned and here is your latest installment of MTFB/FAC.

OSCAR MATTERS

Movie City News awards wrangler David Poland has weighed in with an update on where he thinks the Oscar race is as we end the month of October.  His latest assessment can be found at the MCN site here:

http://moviecitynews.com/2015/10/18-weeks-to-oscar-why-the-martian-is-currently-the-movie-to-beat/

Bottom line is that Poland thinks Ridley Scott's "The Martian" is a serious threat.  He's also still high on TFF #42's "Spotlight"

A NEW LOOK AT "SPOTLIGHT"

A new clip has been released from Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight" with the film slated to open next week on Nov. 6.  Entertainment Weekly trumpeted a new clip from the film earlier this week that features Mark Ruffalo and Stanley Tucci.  You can find the post complete with the clip here:

http://www.ew.com/article/2015/10/26/mark-ruffalo-spotlight-exclusive

DIRECTORS TALK: FUKUNAGA AND GAVRON

I have highlighted and included two new conversations with directors who were in Telluride over Labor Day weekend.  The New York Times talked recently with "Beasts of No Nation" helmer Cary Fukunaga.  Meanwhile, Time.com has an interview with "Suffragette" director Sarah Gavron.  You can find those here:

Fukunaga:

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/25/movies/cary-joji-fukunaga-on-the-perils-of-making-beasts-of-no-nation.html

Gavron:
