Next Best Pictures Cannes Guesses / Interviews and Profiles: Naomi Watts on The Friend

NEXT BEST PICTURE'S CANNES GUESSES

We're almost there.  The Cannes lineup announcement is a week from today.  In today's post I dissect the Cannes lineup that Next Best Picture advocated the week before last with the intent of trying to guess which films will play in France in May then Telluride over Labor Day weekend.

From NBP's list, my best guesses would be:

Die, My Love/No Distribution/Lynne Ramsay

Eleanor the Great/Sony Pictures Classics/Scarlett Johansson

Orphan/No Distribution/Laszlo Nemes

The Chronology of Water/No Distribution/Kristen Stewart

The Disappearance of Joseph Mengele/No Distribution/Kirill Serebrennikov

The History of Sound/Mubi/Oliver Hermanus

The Mastermind/Mubi/Kelly Reichardt

The Wave/No Distribution/Sebastian Lelio 

The Way of the Wind/No Distribution/Terrence Malick

The Young Mother's Home/No Distribution/The Dardennes Brothers

NBP is also predicting films from Wes Anderson, Richard Linklater, Ari Aster, Jim Jarmusch and Spike Lee.  For various reasons I doubt any of those will be Telluride bound.

Party in L.A....Clues?/SPC Hondos Awarded/Trailers for Sale or Rent

PARTY IN L.A....CLUES?

Last night in Los Angeles The Telluride Film Festival through a fairly discreet invitation only party designed to tease this year's 40th rendition of the festival.  The Hollywood Reporters' Scott Feinberg was there and filed a substantial story very early this morning.  You can find that linked here:

Highlights of Scott's post include:

The presence of some Hollywood heavyweights to the tune of Alexander Payne, James Gray and Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner.  What does their presence mean?

Count on "Nebraska" at TFF #40.  Gray's appearance reinforces my belief that "The Immigrant" will SHOW.  The Matt Weiner thing is really curious.  He's got a film that he's written, directed and produced entitled "You Are Here" starring Owen Wilson and Zach Galifinakis.  It has no announced distributor or release date but IMDb lists it as being in post-production.  Makes you wonder.

Maybe Weiner is just a big fan of the festival...

(P.S.  the cast of "You Are There" includes frequent Telluride guest Peter Bogdonavich...which is more ammo for the theory that the film plays).

Also attending the party, "The King's Speech scribe David Seidler and sometime SHOW guest, the irrepressible Norman Lloyd.

Feinberg also reveals that, as I have suspected, George Clooney was an instrumental factor in"Argo's" appearance at TFF #39 and we shouldn't be surprised if Mr. Clooney comes back...maybe not this year...but soon.

SPC HONDOS AWARDED

No film house has a higher profile year in and year out at the Telluride Film Festival than Sony Pictures Classics.  I expect this year will be no different.

Last night SPC chiefs Michael Barker and Tom Bernard were awarded the initial Envision Award from the Museum of the Moving Image in New York for being "transformational leaders in film".  Looking at their track record, that would be difficult to argue with.  On hand to aid in the fete were Marcia Gay Harden, Jonathan Demme, Candice Bergen and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

THE IMPOSSIBLE

I've been passing along tidbits here and there about "The Impossible", a film centered on the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean starring Naomi Watts and Ewan MacGregor and which just this week got scheduled for an awards friendly release date from Summit Entertainment.

Naturally this caught my eye along with the speculation in some quarters that because of the noticeably flashy date (Dec. 21) that Summit might be looking at some fall fest action for it.  Also what little reaction to screenings that I've been able to find suggests that it might also be a pretty good film.  So, it's on my watch list.

Consequently I have added a couple more posts that shine a bit more light on the film including a Spanish language trailer linked by Jeff Wells.

Jessica Chastain on the set of "Eleanor Rigby"

News and posts today about one of the most intriguingly titled films in years: "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby"...any film title that references one of the five best Beatles songs is going to catch my eye.  The casting news in these stories suggests that some seriousness of purpose.
