MTFB Oscar Predictions Round Two: Lead Acting/ Gold Derby Has Hamnet in Front / TFF #52 and the British Independent Awards

MTFB OSCAR PREDICITONS ROUND TWO: LEAD ACTING

MTFB continues its up date of  Oscar predictions with the Lead acting Categories.  These predictions will include the actors current ranking as well as its position from two weeks back.  TFF #52 films are in Bold.

2) Rene Reinsve/Sentimental Value (2)
3) Cynthia Enviro/Wicked: For Good (3)
4) Emma Stone/Bugonia (4)
5) Amanda Seyfried/The Testament of Ann Lee (NR)

Others: Kate Hudson/Song Sung Blue, Sidney Sweeney/Christy and Rose Byrne/If I Had Legs I'd Kick You.

CommentAt this early point there would be five TFF #52 performances nominated for Best Lead: Buckley, Reinsve, Stone, Moura and Hawke.  Big movers up are Seyfried and Hawke.  Also note Chalamet's rise to number one among the men over DiCaprio.

Next post: Supporting Actors.

GOLD DERBY HAS HAMNET IN FRONT

In a very interesting twist Gold Derby now has Chloe Zhao's Hamnet fractionally ahead of Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another.  The edition posted yesterday revealed that.  You can see that post linked here.

Additionally Gold Derby has five TFF #52 in the predicted five for Best Picture: Hamnet, Sentimental Value, It was Just an Accident, Frankenstein and Bugonia.  Five BP nominations for films that played Telluride in a single year would establish a new record TFF.

TFF #52 AND THE BRITISH INDEPENDENT FILM AWARDS

Five TFF #52 films were nominated for British Independent Film Awards on Monday.  Henry Lighton's Pillion had the most nominations of any Telluride film with 10.  Harris Dickinson's Urchin had six.  Here's the complete breakdown:

Pillion (10): Best British Independent Film, Best Direction (Lighton), Screenplay (Lighton), Lead Performance (Melling), Supporting Performance (Skarsgard), Debut Director (Lighton), Debut Screenplay (Lighton), Costuming, Editing and Make-up/Hair.

Urchin (6): Best British Independent Film, Best Lead Performance (Millane), Debut Director (Dickinson), Breakthrough Producer (Pearch). Casting, Music Supervision.

Sentimental Value (1): Best International Independent Film.

It Was Just an Accident (1): Best International Independent Film.

H Is for Hawk (1): Best Cinematography.

We Turn the Page / Early Line on Oscar Best Picture Nominees / Character Posters from Blue Moon

WE TURN THE PAGE

We've made the run of post-festival ratings with the reportage of results from my annual poll of the People, the Professionals and then the Composite of both together.  Hamnet did very, very well...as it should.  So, as has become the custom here at MTFB, we turn the page to what happens now in awards season to the films that made up the TFF #52 lineup.

EARLY LINE ON OSCAR BEST PICTURE NOMINEES

I did quick inventory of  a variety of Oscar prediction websites in search of an early line on the Best Picture competition.  The quick line looks like this:

1) Hamnet
2) One Battle After Another
3) Sinners
4) Sentimental Value
5) A House of Dynamite

A few other TFF #52 films could also be in play such as The Secret Agent, It Was Just an Accident, Bugonia and Jay Kelly.

This far out, however, some contenders haven't been considered as they haven't been seen by anyone yet. That list of films would include: Wicked: For Good, Avatar: Fire and Glass, Marty Supreme and Is This Thing On?.

Additionally Gold Derby has assessed the early race this way:

1) Hamnet
2) Sinners
3) One Battle after Another
4) Sentimental Value
5) Wicked: For Good
6) Marty Supreme
7) A House of Dynamite
8) Jay Kelly
9) Bugonia
10) It Was Just an Accident

Finally, checking in some specific Oscar prognosticators, here's where Scott Feinberg of  The Hollywood Reporter is on Best Picture:

Frontrunners:

1) Hamnet (Focus)
2) Sentimental Value (Neon)
3) Sinners (Warner Bros.)
4) A House of Dynamite (Netflix)
5) The Secret Agent (Neon)
6) Jay Kelly (Netflix)
7) It Was Just An Accident (Neon)
8) Bugonia (Focus)
9) Train Dreams (Netflix)
10) Roofman (Paramount)

And again, to point out, Feinberg does not add films to the list until he's actually seen them.  At the time of this post that included One Battle After Another among others.

CHARACTER POSTERS FROM BLUE MOON

Sony Pictures Classics released character posters from Richard Linklater's Blue Moon featuring Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Andrew Scott and Bobby Canavale:  Here they are:

Late Breaking: Springsteen Added to New York / Die My Love Still in Play? / Gold Derby Oscar Ratings for What We Think Is Headed to TFF #52

LATE BREAKING: NEW YORK ADDS SPRINGSTEEN

Just announced this morning after the blog's post time, the New York Film Festival has added Scott Cooper's Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere to its lineup as a Spotlight Gala.  Noteworthy is that the language of the press release refers to it as a premiere but does NOT indicate what level of premiere.

I have also been told that the original release may have suggested that it was a World premiere but that has been scrubbed for the current language.

All of this tends to support the notion that the film will, in fact bow initially at Telluride.

Here's the link to the NYFF announcement in its current form:

https://www.filmlinc.org/nyff/daily/scott-coopers-springsteen-deliver-me-from-nowhere-announced-as-nyff63-spotlight-gala/

DIE, MY LOVE STILL IN PLAY?

We haven't heard much about Lynne Ramsay and Die, My Love since Cannes.  But now, over the weekend, Jordan Ruimy at World of Reel sourcing from Screen Daily suggests that Ramsay has been re-editing the film since Cannes.  Ruimy also reminds us that the same scenario occurred when Ramsay screened We Need to Talk About Kevin at Cannes in 2011 and then worked on further editing it afterwards.  Of course that film went on to screen at Telluride.
Ruimy even suggests that a repeat of that scenario is not completely out of the question writing:

"IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” podcast seems to now be hinting that Ramsay went back to the editing room after Cannes to further shape “Die, My Love,” which might potentially explain its absence at the fall fests — although I still wouldn’t rule out a Telluride appearance."

GOLD DERBY OSCAR RANKINGS FOR WHAT WE THINK IS HEADED TO TFF #52

As many of you readers know, when the fest concludes on Sept. 1st and this space will then become focused on the awards season fortunes of the films that make up the TFF #52 lineup.  So I took a look at how the experts at Gold Derby had rated some of the films that we think may play T-ride in a few weeks.  Here's where they sit:

#3 Sentimental Value
#4 Jay Kelly
#7 Bugonia
#8 Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere
#13 It Was Just an Accident
#15 Hamnet
#21 The Ballad of Small Player
#35 The History of Sound
#39 The Mastermind
#47 The Secret Agent
#48 Nouvelle Vague

If the Gold Derby experts are correct TFF #52 would have four films get Oscar nominated for Best Picture.

Post Oscar Nominations Musings / I Had a Pretty Good Day / Satellite Awards and TFF / Correction

POST OSCAR NOMINATION MUSINGS

Now comes the time when our focus shifts from Oscar nominations to Oscar wins.  The Academy Awards ceremony is set for March 2nd.

I'll begin tracking the various categories over the next five weeks as I try to predict what films will win what categories.  What's fun is that there doesn't seem to be a frontrunner for Best Picture.  You could make a case for several of the ten films winning the Big Prize.  Emilia Perez with the most nominations, 13 in all, the most ever for an International film and just one nomination short of the all time record.  But not every film with 13-14 nominations wins Best Picture...Just ask the producers of La La Land.

Also making strong cases as candidates to win: The Brutalist, Conclave, Anora and A Complete Unknown.  Wicked still has a shot.

My gut says that A Complete Unknown and Conclave have momentum right now.  I'll have the first set of "winner" predictions on Thursday.

We'll also get some insight as the various Guilds weigh in with their winners.  The directors and the Producers Guilds start the parade on Feb. 8th.

I HAD A PRETTY GOOD DAY

Those that have been reading this space for some time and especially during this chunk of the year when MTFB focuses on the Oscar season probably have a good sense of the level of prediction success has been.  For those who don't, here are the prediction success rates for the past few years:

2024: 91 of 120-75.8%
2023: 93 of 120-77.5%
2022: 87 of 120-72.5%
2021: 87 of 118-73.7%
2020: 100 of 124-80.6%
2019: 95 of 122-77.9%

Overall during this period   of 724 for correct prediction rate of 76.4%.  This year I was a bit ahead of that with 97 correct predictions out of 120.  The correct rate?  80.8%. That raises the overall rate to 77%.

Additionally, in nine categories the film I had in the first alternate spot was nominated.

Categories where I got all the nominees: Actress, Supporting Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Original Screenplay, Animated Feature, Production Design and Makeup/Hair

My worst non-short category was Original Song where I got only three of the five.

In all but one category I had all the all of the nominees predicted as nominees or alternates.  The one category where that was not true was Best Picture where I didn't have I'm Still Here within a mile of being nominated.  I really thought that if the Academy chose a second International film (in addition to Emilia Perez) it would have been All That We Imagine as Light or The Seed of the Sacred Fig.

Finally, as I am being immodest concerning my predix this year, had I been a Gold Derby Expert or Editor...I would have topped them all for accuracy.  Here's where they ended up:

Gold Derby Experts:

Gold Derby Editors:

I'll be waiting for my invitation to join Gold Derby's panel for next year.

SATELLITE AWARDS AND TFF

The International Press Academy's Satellite Awards winners were announced Saturday Night.  TFF films landed five wins:

Anora: Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical)
A Real Pain: Original Screenplay
Nickel Boys: Adapted Screenplay
Emilia Perez: Original Score, Original Song (Mi Camino)

The Brutalist was named Best Picture (Drama).

CORRECTION

I had a note from an anonymous reader last week that TFF #50 also had an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Short. Incident did indeed screen at TFF #50.

That brings the totals for TFF films for this year's Academy Awards to 14 films with 41 nominations.

Some Other Post Oscar Notes / So Early, But... / Interviews and Profiles

SOME OTHER POST OSCAR NOTES

2023's edition of the Telluride Film Festival was much more Oscar connected than the 2022 SHOW.  The 49th TFF had films that earned 17 total nominations and a single win for Best Adapted Screenplay for Sarah Polley's Women Talking.

The 50th version saw a dramatic jump in both nominations and wins.  35 total nominations and an a solid nine wins.  For context the 35 nominations tied 2016 and 2021 TFFs for the years with the most nominations.  The nine Oscar wins is the third largest number of Oscar wins for TFFs. 2016 saw TFF films win 12 Oscars and in 2013 TFF films won 10.

For other trivia about the TFF/Oscar connection take a look next week at my TFF Unofficial Oscar History page which has a link above.

SO EARLY, BUT...

Gold Derby is up with an incredibly early list of 20 films that they bill as "Early Contenders" for Oscar glory a year from now.  That gives me an opportunity to begin looking at those films and see which ones could be TFF #51 contenders as well.

What to kook for?  TFF history with a film's director, producer and/or distributor.  Or sometimes it's a gut feeling irrespective of any of those characteristics.

At any rate...here are films from the list of 20 that seem like TFF possibilities:

The Apprentice Dir: Ali Abbasi.
Bird Dir: Andrea Arnold.
Blitz Dir: Steve McQueen.  Distrib: Apple TV+
Conclave Dir: Edward Berger.  Distrib: Focus Features
Maria Dir: Pablo Larrain (it probably also doesn't hurt for TFF chances that the cinematographer is Ed Lachman)
Megalopolis Dir: Frances Ford Coppola
Parthenope Dir: Paolo Sorrentino
The Piano Lesson Dir: Malcolm Washington. Distrib: Netflix
Queer Dir: Luca Guadagnino

The Latest from Gold Derby / Interviews

Welcome to the Lull...that week between Christmas and New Years...

THE LATEST FROM GOLD DERBY

It's not a secret that I have been really pleased to be included as an "Oscar Guru" for MOvie City News' Gurus o' Gold this Oscar season but I'd also be silly to ignore the Oscarologists compendium that is Gold Derby.  So, I'm not.

I took a look at their latest collective predictions and this is where there set of pros have Telluride films situated in their prognostications as 2018 comes to a close.

I am assuming nine films make the Best Picture field;

Leading the way for TFF #45 films in Gold Derby's estimation are both The Favourite and First Man.  Both films are pegged fro 10 nominations.  Roma is close behind with a projected eight nominations.

The Favourite is predicted for: Best Picture, Direction, Actress, Supporting Actress (for both Stone and Weisz), Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Costumes, Film Editing and Production Design.

The Derby has First Man predicted for: Best Picture, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Film Editing, Production Design, Original Score, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects.

Roma is picked for: Best Picture, Direction, Actress, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Film Editing, Sound Editing and Foreign Language Film.

Can You Ever Forgive Me? is named thrice: Actress, Supporting Actor and Adapted Screenplay.

Single nominations are predicted for:

Free Solo: Best Documentary Feature
Cold War: Best Foreign Language Film
Shoplifters: Best Foreign Language Film
Caroline: Best Live Action Short

That's a total of 35 predicted nominations for TFF #45 films.

Additionally, First Reformed from TFF #44 is predicted to earn nominations for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay.

The complete latest Gold Derby odds are linked here.

Oscar Thoughts and Telluride / Oscar Stats / Gold Derby's Early Line

Welcome to Thursday.

OSCAR THOUGHTS AND TELLURIDE

After the dust settles on Tuesday morning (and a couple of corrections after I lost the Best Costume Design nominees for a little while) we found that films that had played at the 44th edition of the Telluride Film Festival had garnered 30 nominations.  That's a far cry from last years total of 42 but still slightly ahead of the average number of nominations (around 28) since I have been tracking the awards season as a part of this space.

The breakdown:

The Shape of Water (13 which led all nominees...by a considerable margin): Best Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actress, Supporting Actor, Original Screenplay, Film Editing, Cinematography, Production Design, Costumes, Original Score, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing.

Darkest Hour (6): Best Picture, Actor, Cinematography, Production Design, Costumes, Makeup/Hair.

Lady Bird (5): Best Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay.

One nomination each for:

A Fantastic Woman- Foreign Language Film
The Insult-Foreign Language Film
Loveless- Foreign Language Film
Loving Vincent-Animated Feature
Faces Places-Documentary Feature
Heroin(e)- Documentary Short

The FAC predictions went 94/122 for 77%...very average for The FAC.

The FAC nailed some categories going 5 for 5 in Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Costume Design, Original Song, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing.

I was worst in Live Action and Documentary Short going 2 of 5 in both of those categories.

As is often the case, there were a number of categories where I had an what turned out to be an actual nominee in the first slot beyond my predicted nominees including Meryl Streep for Best Actress, Denzel Washington for Best Actor, Octavia Spencer for Best Supporting Actress and Christopher Plummer in Best Supporting Actor.  Other categories where that was the case were: Best Foreign Language Film, Best Animated Feature, and all three Shorts categories for a total of nine near misses.

I did hit 8/9 in Best Picture with Phantom Thread being where I whiffed.

As a matter of fact, the biggest surprise to me was the strength of Phantom Thread which landed a total of six nominations including Best Picture and Best Direction.  Another surprise, The Post's meager two nominations for Best Picture and Best Actress.

My best work...edging up Darkest Hour to my 9th spot.  My worst...missing Meryl Streep.  Never bet against Streep.

Now it's the wait for March 4th and the actual ceremony.

  OSCAR STATS

In addition to The Shape of Water, Darkest Hour and Lady Bird, there were other films that landed multiple nominations.

Following The Shape of Water, Dunkirk came next with 8 nominations followed by

Three Billboards 7
Phantom Thread 6
Blade Runner 2049 5
Call Me By Your Name, Mudbound, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Get Out each had 4 nominations.

Indiewire has the complete breakdown of nominees per film and per distributor and you can find that post linked here.

Additionally, you can find Indiewire's analysis of the nominees here.

GOLD DERBY'S EARLY LINE

Gold Derby has established their front runners.

The Shape of Water leads for Best Picture with odds of 9/2.  Three Billboards is next and then Lady Bird.

Other early leaders in major categories are:

Best Direction: Guillermo Del Toro/The Shape of Water.  Odds- 3/2
Best Actor: Gary Oldman/Darkest Hour. Odds- 3/2
Best Actress: Frances McDormand/Three Billboards. Odds- 8/5
Best Supporting Actor: Sam Rockwell/Three Billboards. Odds- 13/8
Best Supporting Actress: Allison Janney 7/4
Original Screenplay: Lady Bird 12/5
Adapted Screenplay: Call Me By Your Name 8/5

The complete Gold Derby Odds are here.

That's your Thursday for MTFB.  I'll have more for you on Monday.  Have a great weekend!

The Best Picture Race at the Holiday Break / TFF #43 Directors on Their Films

Good Monday world, if you celebrated Christmas, I hope it was good.  If you're celebrating Hanukkah, I hope it is good.

THE BEST PICTURE RACE AT THE HOLIDAY BREAK

As we move past Christmas and through the rest of Hanukkah toward New Year's Day, here's a quick look at the two broadest measures of Oscar sentiment for Best Picture.  By that I mean a look at Movie City News' Gurus of Gold and The Gold Derby.

MCN's Gurus currently have four Telluride films in the top five potential nominees for Best Picture: La La Land at #1, Moonlight at #2, Manchester by the Sea at #3 and Arrival at #5.  Additionally, Clint Eastwood's Sully sits at what would be the #13 spot.  The highest ranked non-Telluride film is Denzel Washington's Fences at #4.

The complete holiday Gurus of Gold Best Picture chart is here.

Meanwhile, The Gold Derby has La La Land on top at 9 to 2, Manchester second at 13 to 2, Moonlight third at odds of 7 to 1.  Arrival, Silence, Lion and Hacksaw Ridge are all tied at fifth with odds of 14 to 1.

Complete odds from The Gold Derby are linked here.

Barry Jenkins/Moonlight from Greg Tate/The Village Voice: Profile

Maren Ade/Toni Erdmann from Esther Zuckerman/The A.V. Club: Interview

The People's Telluride Revealed / A Week Removed and Some Reflections / The Gold Derby Says...

Welcome to Monday and the return for MTFB to a more manageable, less crazed twice-a-week posting schedule (Mondays and Thursdays) with extra posts when news warrants...

Call your friends and neighbors because it's time for...

THE PEOPLE'S TELLURIDE REVEALED

After collecting data from MTFB readers for a week I have the results of this year's People's Telluride film festival ratings.  Using a 1-5 scale with 1 being "not-so-good" and 5 being "a masterpiece".

The People's Telluride had its largest participation since I started it a few years back which is gratifying.  For the purposes of the ratings and to maintain some semblance of balance, I have limited the list of films included to those that were rated by at least a third of respondents.  Over 40 films/programs were rated by at least one respondent and 21 received enough votes to be included in the final ratings.  The films that were the hottest tickets based on the fact that they were the most rated/viewed were:

1) Arrival
2) La La Land
3) Moonlight
4) Sully
5) Bleed for This

The People's Telluride Ratings for 2016 (the number in parentheses is the film's average rating)

1) Moonlight (4.37)
2) La La Land (4.33)
3) Maudie (4.29)
4) The Eagle Huntress (4.21)
5) Manchester by the Sea (4.18)
6) Arrival (4.13)
7) Bright Lights (3.90)
8) Frantz (3.89)
9) Toni Erdmann (3.80)
10) Sully (3.79)
11) Lost in Paris (3.69)
12) Wakefield (3.59)
13) California Typewriter (3.53)
14) Bleed for This (3.413)
15) Una (3.406)
16) Norman (3.30)
17) Chasing Trane (3.29)
18) Through the Wall (3.17)
19) Things to Come (3.05)
20) Graduation (2.90)
21) Into the Inferno (2.86)

It's worth noting that the film that has finished in the SECOND spot of this poll for the last four years has won the Oscar for Best Picture;

2012- Argo wins Oscar (Stories We Tell was #1 in The Peep's T-ride)
2013- 12 Years a Slave wins Oscar (Tim's Vermeer was #1)
2014- Birdman wins Oscar (The Imitation Game was #1)
2015- Spotlight wins Oscar (Room was #1)

In 2016 La La Land finishes #2 in The Peep's poll and Moonlight is #1.  Does this portend La La Land winning Best Picture?

One other La La Land note, over the weekend Emma Stone who I last saw with my own eyeballs eight days ago in Town Park won Venice's Vest Actress Award for La La Land.

Some other history...none of this year's films crack the Top Ten People's rated films in the five year history of its existence.  Here are the ten best rated films of the past five years according to the People:

1) Stories We Tell-12 (4.80)
2) Argo-12 (4.75)
3) The Imitation Game-14  (4.73)
4) The Attack-12  (4.70)
5) Tim's Vermeer-13 (4.67)
6) 12 Years a Slave -13 (4.55)
7) Room -15 (4.47)
8) Birdman-14 (4.46)
9) Spotlight-15 (4.45)
10) The Act of Killing-12 (4.41)

Moonlight's 4.37 rating would put it at #12 just behind Gravity (4.40) and just ahead of Beasts of No Nation (4.35).

The lowest all time (well for these five years) is from 2012...Paradise: Love with a 1.1 rating and over that time span 98 films have gotten enough responses to be included in The People's Telluride.

COMING THURSDAY...The Professionals Telluride.

A WEEK REMOVED AND SOME REFLECTIONS

The 43rd edition of the Telluride Film Festival came to a close a week ago today.  My wife and I stayed through Monday evening for the first time in years and I have to say I'm glad we did.  It allowed us to get a couple of more films and it also allowed us to stay for the Labor Day Picnic which turned out to be a big deal to me (see below).

Encounters with readers throughout the weekend really made me think that MTFB has gained a modestly substantial following.  I kept running into people through the fest that would mention that they were readers.  I am always thrilled and also disconcerted at that.  The notion that people would recognize me as a result of the blog never entered my mind when I started writing in this space eight years ago.  It is humbling and esteeming all at the same time.

Last year I was stunned when Malala's Yousefzai's father reached out to me to arrange a meeting because he had been a reading the blog.  This year's head turner came on Monday when, as I was congratulating Barry Jenkins for his direction I mentioned that I "wrote a little blog about the festival" at which point he stopped me to ask "Are you Michael?"

Well, I was floored.  This is a young man who is right on the cusp of his big breakout with Moonlight and he knows who I am?  Craziness.

We continued the short conversation and I went on my merry way (actually to the Gondola to The Chuck to catch Bleed for This...Oscar nom for Aaron Eckhardt please).

Later I contacted Mr. Jenkins through Twitter and also friend requested him on Facebook.  We're friends now.  I promised that I wouldn't be a stalker.

Other items...

***The final Ten (Plus) Bets list from day before the lineup for this year was announced was 20 for 20. That's right.  For those keeping score, every film on that last list made the TFF #43 lineup.

Here's how MTFB has done with last posted predictions over these past few years:

2016-20/20
2015-19/20
2014-15/15
2013-14/15
2012-15/20
2011-12/18

As you can see, I've gotten better and to be fair, the process is easier since Toronto laid down their "honest premiere status" policy in 2014.

***With today's posting of the results of The People's Telluride Ratings, and since you have shared your ratings with me,  I thought I'd share my ratings with you:

1) La La Land 4.5
2) Moonlight 4
3) Arrival 4
4) Sully 4
5) Toni Erdmann 4
6) Bright Lights 4
7) Manchester by the Sea 3.5
8) Norman 3.5
9) Una 3.5
10) Wakefield
11) Bleed for This 3
12) Through the Wall 3

THE GOLD DERBY SAYS...

If you've followed this blog for awhile you know that it's about to switch its focus for the next six months or so and report on the Oscar race with particular focus on the films that played at TFF #43.

To that end, here's a breakdown of the leaders in the major six categories at the conclusion of the fest (but before Toronto and Venice have finished) from The Gold Derby.

Best Picture nominations would go to: Manchester by the Sea, La La Land, Moonlight and Arrival (assuming at least eight films are nominated.  Sully is also a possibility.

Best Direction nominations would go to: Kenneth Lonergan/Manchester by the Sea and Damien Chazelle/La La Land.  Close: Denis Villenueve/Arrival, Barry Jenkins/Moonlight and Clint Eastwood/Sully.

Best Actress: Emma Stone/La La Land with Amy Adams/Arrival as a possibility.

Best Actor: Casey Affleck/Manchester by the Sea, Ryan Gosling/La La Land with Tom Hanks/Sully  as a possibility.

Best Supporting Actress: Michelle Williams/Manchester by the Sea, Naomie Harris/Moonlight

Best Supporting Actor: Lucas Hedges/Manchester by the Sea, Marhershala Ali/Moonlight and Kyle Chandler/Manchester by the Sea

From these six categories Manchester would earn six nominations, La La Land would get four, Moonlight would get four with another possibility, Arrival would get one with another two possible and Sully has three possible.

Oscar Experts Update / Future Telluride? More Payne / Morris Off the Hook

Good Thursday Everyone...

OSCAR EXPERTS UPDATE

As Oscar Night continues to get closer, here's a snapshot of where a number of Oscar experts think the Best Picture race (and others) are right now.  I've linked a number of charts and podcasts from Gold Derby as well as the latest updated predictions form Kristopher Tapley of InContention at Variety.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announce their winners this weekend and that will be the next nugget of precursor information.

FUTURE TELLURIDE? MORE PAYNE

I have reported here previously that Telluride regular Alexander Payne was producing Wilson and that his next directing effort will be Downsizing with Matt Damon.  Both of those films could figure into future Telluride film lineups.  Noe comes word of another directing job that Payne will undertake for the same producers that were behind his Nebraska and Election.

The film is tentatively titled My Saga.  Reports are linked below:

MORRIS OFF THE HOOK

A few weeks ago I posted a story that Errol Morris was being sued by the subject of his 2010 documentary Tabloid.  Word this week is that the suit has been dismissed.  Here are the details from The Hollywood Reporter:

That'll do for Thursday.  A new FAC Oscar update will be coming your way on Monday.

Birdman Has Premiered in Venice/Already Thinking Oscar/Sound on Sight Takes a Stab/Scott Feinberg Talks Telluride TODAY!/Remember to Rate/SHOW in the Park

Good Wednesday Everyone...

The Patterson Express to Telluride, Colorado departs the station later today.  The CEO and I will make about 2/3 of the journey this afternoon/evening and then finish the drive into The 'Ride tomorrow morning. We have plans and errands that must be completed Thursday before the whole shebang kicks off on Friday morning with the Patron brunch...

FINAL "TEN BETS" LIST...

I'll be posting my final "Ten Bets" on the road tomorrow morning.  I hope I'm ahead of the curve here.  Last year, the full lineup was leaked way early and if that happens again tonight or early tomorrow morning the final Ten Bets will become superfluous really fast.

Here's hoping that doesn't happen.

"BIRDMAN" HAS PREMIERED IN VENICE

As I type this, reports and reviews are coming in for Alejandro Inarritu's "Birdman" starring Michael Keaton and the general tenor seems to be overwhlemingly positive...some bordering on ecstatic.  I'm staying away from reading the body of reviews as I want to experience the film, should it play in Telluride, with as clean a pallette as I can muster...

ALREADY THINKING OSCAR

Movie City News has its first Gurus of Gold up for the 2014-15 edition of Oscar.  Gold Derby has also weighed in with a pre-festival stab at guessing which films Oscar will favor this year.  MCN's Gurus list David Fincher's "Gone Girl", Alejandro Inarritu's "Birdman", Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken" and Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" all tied in the top spot.  Meanwhile, the Gold Derby handicappers have  "Boyhood" with the best odds to win Best Picture.

From the MCN Gurus, other probable Telluride films listed in consideration for Best Picture are: "Foxcatcher", "Wild", "The Imitation Game", "Mr. Turner" and "Rosewater".

Gold Derby lists: "Foxcatcher", "Birdman", "Wild", "The Imitation Game", "Mr. Turner", "The Homesman" and "Rosewater".

Added note:  Gold Derby also lists "Whiplash" which, while not on my list of likely T-ride films, persistently shows up in predictions by others as a Telluride possibility.

SOUND ON SIGHT TAKES A STAB

Soundonsight.org provides an overview of the Telluride Film Festival and makes some guesses about films they feel might play.  Here's what they get wrong: "Unbroken", "Queen of the Desert", "The Theory of Everything" and "Winter Sleep".  They get a couple right.  Take a look here:

http://www.soundonsight.org/telluride-film-festival-2014-most-anticipated/

SCOTT FEINBERG TALKS TELLURIDE TODAY!

Scott Feinberg of  The Hollywood Reporter will be talking Telluride today for The Huffington Post.  I expect he'll have a pretty good bead on what's likely to play at this year's fest so you might want to tune in.  The link for that is here:

http://live.huffingtonpost.com/r/segment/for-your-consideration-telluride-film-festival-/53f7b5d602a760387000018e

REMEMBER TO RATE

Now that we're down to Telluride week, here's your reminder...Don't forget to join in on "The People's Telluride".  Rate the films you see this week on a 0-5 scale ( 0 being just abysmal and 5 being a masterpiece).  You can rate each day or do them all at the end of the fest.  Send film ratings to me via Twitter (@Gort2) or email me at michael_speech@hotmail.com or in the comments section of this blog.

I'll collect all of that data and post the collective ratings from we, The People.

SHOW IN THE PARK

Two or three local websites out of Telluride posted late yesterday that the Roger Ebert documentary "Life Itself" will be shown in Elks Park on Thursday night (so, it finlly shows at Telluride a year after I was just certain that it would...I don't get 'em all).  Those films are often a harbinger of one of the Tributes. But for the life of me, I can't quite figure this thing out.  I have my ear to the ground on this one and if I get it puzzled out, I'll let you know in tomorrow's post...or Friday's...

Here's the Facebook post from The Telluride Festivarian with the lowdown on the Thursday presentation:

Oscar in the Headlights/Directors Talking

Good Monday Everyone...hope you had a good weekend.

OSCAR IN THE HEADLIGHTS

It's down to less than a week until the envelopes are unsealed and the closest Best Picture race in a good long while comes to an end.  I'll have a final FAC Check of the Oscar categories on Thursday with the possibility of some tweaking on Friday and Saturday...maybe even Sunday morning.  As I wrote last week, I am planning to include all 24 Oscar categories including the "Shorts" in this final prognostication.

What's buzzing as we move into the last two days of Oscar balloting (remember balloting must be done by 5PM Pacific Time tomorrow)?

***It's still a horse race for Best Picture.  "12 Years a Slave" with a perceived slight edge over "Gravity" with no one completely dismissing the chance that it could be "American Hustle".

***Almost everyone that thinks they know this stuff is saying that Alfonso Cuaron wins Best Director regardless of the Best Picture outcome.

***Three of the four four acting categories have front runners that seem virtual locks: McConaughey for Actor for "Dallas Buyers Club", Leto for Supporting in the same film and Cate Blanchett for Actress for "Blue Jasmine".  Best Supporting Actress is a closer contest with Lupita Nyong'o Of  "12 Years" perceived to have a small advantage over Jennifer Lawrence for "Hustle".

I have been hearing some buzz about a possible DiCaprio surprise for Actor but Leto and Blanchett appear solid.  There's even a bit of a Chiwetel Ejiofor buzz after his BAFTA win last week.

***"Gravity" is going to win the most trophies Sunday night.  The questions are: How many? and Which ones?

***"Hustle" could end the night with no wins despite having the most nominations of any film (10, tied with "Gravity").  It's best chance is in Original Screenplay where it's thought that it's in a very tight race with "Her".  It's next best chance is Lawrence and its third best shot might actually be Best Picture.

***I mentioned this on my last post, at the end of the night the film with the second most wins may very well be "Dallas Buyers Club" which is seen as likely winning three: Actor, Supporting Actor and Makeup/Hair.  If "12 Years" goes down in Best Picture, Supporting Actress and/or Adapted Screenplay all of which could happen.

***As a matter of fact, "12 Years" could go home empty handed.

Anyway, the Oscar season is in full force for six more days...

Here are some of the last few days key Oscar prognosticators:

Gurus of Gold and their "top three" edition:

http://moviecitynews.com/2014/02/gurus-o-gold-top-3/

Also the Gurus "If We Could Sway the Academy" edition:

http://moviecitynews.com/2014/02/gurus-o-gold-if-we-could-sway-the-academy/

Here's a link to Scott Feinberg's next to last Feinberg Forecast...he still has "12 Years" listed on top for Best Picture:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/feinberg-forecast-whos-up-whos-680714

Feinberg has also posted his "Forecast" for the Shorts categories.  You can find that here:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/oscars-winner-predictions-whos-going-682650

And Sasha Stone has her latest installment of "The State of the Race" in which she says what I say...it's about Telluride:

DIRECTORS TALKING

Fox Searchlight tweeted this link to an interview with "12 Years a Slave" director Steve McQueen over the weekend:

And Daniel Montgomery of Gold Derby has this interview with Oscar nominated documentarian and TFF #39 participant Joshua Oppenheimer whose "The act of Killing" is in hot competition to win the Best Doc Oscar on Sunday night:

THR on Who Goes Where: Telluride vs. Toronto/The Playlist's 100 Most Anticipated and T-ride/Gold Derby's Latest Odds

Welcome to another Thursday in the Monkey House (there's your Vonnegut reference for today)...

THR ON WHO GOES WHERE (Telluride vs. Toronto)

Analysts continue to parse the meaning of the announcement from the Toronto International Film Festival about programming decisions for their first four days and their opening and closing films.

Scott Feinberg weighed in on Tuesday with a piece for The Hollywood Reporter detailing some guesswork involving various directors and their possible loyalties vis-a-vis Tellurdie and Toronto.

That piece is linked here:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/telluride-toronto-forced-pick-one-675681

I also include it in today's blogpost because Feinberg references the Werner Herzog Theater as "The Zog".  Readers of this space and friends who came to the 2013 "Guide to the Ride" reception in Telluride know that "The Zog" was the nickname that I said I was going to try to push as a nifty shorthand for the new facility.  Now, I'm not claiming that the THR reference springs from that attempt...but I'm very close to saying that...

THE PLAYLIST'S 100 MOST ANTICIPATED AND TELLURIDE

The Playlist has put together the 100 films they are the most excited about that will/may premiere in 2014. Taking my cue from them, I've tried to parse the Telluride possibilities beginning with the films listed from 51-100:

The Complete list/post is here:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/we-rank-the-100-most-anticipated-films-of-2014-the-best-films-of-the-2014-20140102

And here are what seem to me to be the likeliest candidates for Labor Day in the San Juans:

#96- Michel Hazanavicius' "The Search" starring Berenice Bejo.  A drama set in Chechnya.  Hazanavicius "The Artist" played Cannes and Telluride in 2011.  It wouldn't surprise me if this film made the same journey in 2014.

#90- Andrey Zvyagintsev's "Leviafan"-The Playlist calls it a social drama set in a fictional "new country".  The film sounds ambitious and intriguing.  They also seem to think it's a highly probable Cannes entry and that's enough for me to be thinking I should put it on the Telluride watch list.

#87-Tim Burton's "Big Eyes"-Christoph Waltz and Amy Adams...yes please.  The Weinstein Company has this in their basket and the thinking is that they may want to push it come awards season.  It's based on the life of painter Margaret Keane (Adams).   I can see tribute possibilities for Burton...

#77-"Suite Francaise"- This is a World War II set love story with complicatons.  Weinstein's have it and The Playlist explicitly says that Telluride is likely...of course that pronouncement came before the Toronto change of protocol.

#55-"Far From the Madding Crowd"-We've mentioned this film in earlier posts from other lists.  The biggest reasons to think it would be Telluride bound: the director-Thomas Vinterberg and the production company (and likely distributor)- Fox Searchlight.

#51-Untitled Noah Baumbach/Greta Gerwig Public School Project-  Because it's Baumbach and he's made a habit of coming to Telluride.

I'll take a look at The Playlist's films from 1-50 on Monday.

GOLD DERBY'S LATEST OSCAR ODDS

Here's the latest line from The Gold Derby on Best Picture Oscar odds:

http://www.goldderby.com/stats/experts/oscars-2013/best-picture.html

It still looks very likely that Best Picture went through Telluride.

More on Monday...Have a great weekend.

PAYNE AND DERN

Alexander Payne told us in Telluride that there was a color version of "Nebraska".  Now he's telling The Dissolve the same thing and explaining why it exists:

Macy's Rudderless this week.  The film, written by Oklahomans (friend of the blog) Casey Twenter and Jeff Robison and  filmed in Oklahoma, was highlighted by a story about the first look at stills from the film and was also tipped as a hot prospect for The Sundance Film Festival by IndieWire.  Here are the links to those stories:
