MTFB Oscar Update: Picture, Direction and Lead Acting / Clip from Totem / Interviews and Profiles

MTFB OSCAR UPDATE: FIRST WINNER PREDICTIONS: PICTURE, DIRECTION, LEAD ACTING

Here's my first "educated" set of predictions for who/what will win on Oscar night, March 10th.  TFF films are in Bold.

BEST PICTURE

1) Oppenheimer

2) The Holdovers

3) Poor Things

4) American Fiction

5) Barbie

6) Killers of the Flower Moon

7) Anatomy of a Fall

8) The Zone of Interest

9) Maestro

10) Past Lives

Comment: It looks like, as has seemed true for months, that Best Picture is Oppenheimer's to lose.  I had thought that if The Holdovers could have gotten nominations for Payne, Sessa and Editing that we might have a real race.  With that scenario not coming to fruition it doesn't feel like any film is going to catch Oppy.

BEST DIRECTION

1) Christopher  Nolan/Oppenheimer

2) Yorgos Lanthimos/Poor Things

3) Martin Scorsese/Killers of the flower Moon

4) Justine Triet/Anatomy of a Fall

5) Jonathan Glazer/The Zone of Interest

Comment: If anything, Nolan has a tighter grip on this Oscar than Oppy has on Best Picture.

BEST ACTRESS

1) Lily Gladstone/Killers of the Flower Moon

2) Emma Stone/Poor Things

3) Sandra Huller/Anatomy of a Fall

4) Annette Bening/Nyad

5) Carey Mulligan/Maestro

Comment: Where Best and Direction seem foregone conclusions, this race is, at the moment, a barn-burner.  It really could go either way.  For the moment I gave Gladstone winning by the slimmest of margins.

BEST ACTOR

1) Paul Giamatti/The Holdovers

2) Cillian Murphy/Oppenheimer

3) Bradley Cooper/Maestro

4) Jeffrey Wright/American Fiction

5) Colman Domingo/Rustin

Comment: Giamatti is looking strong but Murphy is certainly still in play.

TFF films with 12 nominations in theses six categories and a projected win for Best Actor.

Oscar #96 and Telluride / Interviews and Profiles: Emma Stone, Paul Giamatti and More

OSCAR #96 AND TELLURIDE

TFF films earned 35 nominations for Academy Awards on Tuesday morning.  I had predicted 35 total nominations on Monday.  Of course, the 35 I predicted weren't exactly the 35 that actually came up. 

For example, I had Poor Things listed for 13 and it landed 11.  I had the film getting nominated for Best Supporting Actor twice but Willem Dafoe didn't make the cut.  I also had it being nominated for Best Visual Effects.

Another example: I had Alexander Payne getting named as one of the five Best Directors.  Nope.

But other TFF films over-performed.  Anatomy of a Fall, which I predicted for three nominations, scored a Best Direction nomination for Justine Triet and another for Best Editing.

Nyad's Annette Bening's Best Actress nomination was one more than I had predicted.

As I mentioned in Tuesday's Special Oscar Nomination post, I went 91 for 120 on the predictions. That's a rate of 75.8% which is a couple of points below my five year average.  Still, checking on the predictions from the experts that participate in Gold Derby's poll, I would have been 6th among the 28 referenced there bettering participants from Variety, Deadline, Awards Daily and Gold Derby itself.

My best categories, where I named all the nominees in a category, were Best Picture (10/10), Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay and Best Costumes (all 5/5).

More worst category: Best Documentary Feature where I got just two out of the five.

In the "close but no cigar" predictions, there were six categories wherein the film I had listed as first alternate made the nomination lineup: Jonathan Glazer for Direction, Annette Bening for Actress, The Eternal Memory for Doc Feature, Anatomy of a Fall for Editing, Society of the Snow for Makeup/Hair and Knight of Fortune for Live Action Short.

Now it's on to predicting the actual Oscar winners which will be announced on March 10th.  The early thinking is that Oppenheimer is going to have a big night and could approach an Oscar haul approaching Slumdog Millionaire's (eight Oscars) from 2009.  It is certainly the frontrunner for Best Picture.  It's biggest challenge probably is from Poor Things or The Holdovers.  

Actually, had The Holdovers picked nominations for Direction and Supporting Actor, I might think it had a fighting chance at the Green Book/CODA-like upset.  Absent those noms, though...probably not.

My first completely intuitive picks for Oscar night have the wins going like this:

Oppenheimer: Picture, Direction, Supporting Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Score and Sound for a total of eight.  It could be more as Cillian Murphy is a viable possibility for Best Actor.

The Holdovers: Actor, Supporting Actress and Original Screenplay.

Barbie: Song, Production Design and Costumes.

Poor Things: Actress. It's also very competitive for Production Design, Costumes, Makeup/Hair.

20 Days in Mariupol: Documentary Feature

Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse: Animated Feature

The Creator: Visual Effects

Maestro: Makeup/Hair

Letter to a Pig: Animated Short

The Wonderful Life of Henry Sugar: Live Action Short

The Last Repair Shop: Documentary Short.

If I'm right, TFF films will emerge with six trophies on Oscar night but will, once again, not have screened the Best Picture Oscar winner.  The last TFF film to win Best Picture was Parasite in 2020.

At first blush, I have Killers of the Flower Moon not winning any Oscar, although Lily Gladstone is very, very viable to beat Emma Stone for Best Actress.  Does KOTFM avoid the fate of Scorsese's The Irishman which was also nominated for 10 Oscars and left the 2020 Oscars empty-handed?

I'll have my first "real" predictions for Oscar winners on Monday beginning with Best Picture, Direction and the Lead Acting categories.

The Holdovers (6): Best Picture, Direction, Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay and Editing.  Also, a possible shot at Supporting Actor.  If this lands Payne, and Sessa and the Editing nomination...lookout Oppy.

The Zone of Interest (5): Best Picture, International Feature, Cinematography, Score and Sound.  Plus it could be a factor in five other categories: Direction, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography and Production Design.  Imagine a world in which Zone has nominations tomorrow morning.

Killers of the Flower Moon (11): Best Picture, Direction, Actress, Supporting Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Score, Production Design, Costumes and Makeup/Hair.  If Leo sneaks into Best Actor, KOTFM could get a 12th nomination.

Maestro (8): Best Picture, Actress, Actor, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design, Sound and Makeup.  Maestro has a chance to get to double digit nominations if it could also land Direction, Editing and Costumes.

As a side note, my track record for nomination predictions over the last five years has averaged a 76.5% success rate.

BAFTA Nominations Announced / MTFB Oscar Update: Costumes. Makeup/Hair and Shorts / Visiting the Vault / Interviews and Profiles

BAFTA NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED

 TFF films earned a combined total of 49 nominations from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) this morning.  Leading the way for TFF was Poor Things with 11.  Here's the breakdown of all TFF film nominations:

Poor Things (11): Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Actress, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Costumes, Makeup/Hair, Score, Production Design and Visual Effects.

The Zone of Interest (9): Outstanding British Film, Best Film Not in the English Language, Direction, Supporting Actress,  Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design and Sound.

As of this morning's post I am predicting TFF films with a total of 35 nominations with another 15 "alternates".  Here's the TFF breakdown:

Poor Things (12 noms and one alternate) : Best Picture, Direction, Actress, Supporting Actor (Ruffalo), Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Score, Production Design, Visual Effects, Costumes and Makeup/Hair.  The alternate is a second Supporting Actor nomination for Willem Dafoe.

The Zone of Interest (Six noms and one alternate): Best Picture, Direction, International Film, Cinematography, Score and Sound.  The alternates is Huller for Adapted Screenplay.

The Holdovers (Five noms and two alternatives): Best Picture, Actor, Supporting Actress, Editing and Original Screenplay.  Alternates are for Direction, Supporting Actor.

Anatomy of a Fall (Three noms and one alternate):Best Picture, Actress and Original Screenplay and the alternate is for Editing.

American Symphony (Two noms): Best Doc feature and Song.

Nyad (One nom and one alternate): The nom for Supporting Actress with a Best Actress alternate.

Rustin (One nom and one alternate): The nom for Best Song with an alternate possibility for Best Actor.

Saltburn is an alternate in four categories: Best Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay and Cinematography.

All of Us Strangers is an alternate in two categories: Best Actor and Adapted Screenplay.

In addition to The Zone of Interest in International Feature, I'm predicting three other TFF films to be nominated in that category: The Taste of Things, The Teachers' Lounge and Fallen Leaves.  Totem and Perfect Days could also make it into the category.  Were it not for Society of the Snow I'd likely be predicting that all five nominees for International Feature would be TFF films.

In Documentary Feature, in addition to American Symphony, I have Beyond Utopia making it into the list of nominees.

And finally, in the Shorts categories I have three TFF films being nominated as you can see above: Strange Way of Life, The Last Repair Shop and Last Song from Kabul.

In terms of other predictions not TFF films I have Oppenheimer leading the pack with 13 nominations.  

Other non-TFF films with double nomination totals predicted:  Killers of the Flower Moon with 12 and Barbie with 11.  Maestro is now predicted for nine nominations.

VISITING THE VAULT

Close readers of MTFB know that I keep a file labeled "Future Telluride" on my laptop.  As I see films announced that sound like they might have a TFF in their future, I put the article in that folder as a method of keeping track of those films.  

Each year I re-visit and cull the films that either did make it to TFF or were released having not made it to Southwest Colorado.  I think it's kind of fun to take stock of what was in there that made it to the most recent TFF and when they first went into the folder.

After this year's sorting, I found that I had 11 films that screened in TFF #50 that had been in the folder.  Here they are and the date I first saved them for future reference:

Critics Choice Awards / Producers Guild Nominates / MTFB Oscar Update: Score, Song and More / The Film Stage's Hot 100 for 2024 / Interviews and Profiles: Giamatti, Domingo

CRITICS CHOICE AWARDS

Oppenheimer and Barbie dominated the Critics Choice Awards last night with the former winning eight trophies including Best Picture and Direction.  Barbie won six.

Three TFF films earned awards with The Holdovers dominating in acting categories.  Paul Giamatti won Best Actor, Da'Vine Joy Randolph won Best Supporting Actress and Domnic Sessa was named Best Young Actor.  Emma Stone won Best Actress for Poor Things and Anatomy of a Fall was named Best Foreign Language Film.

The next big precursor is the announcement of BAFTA nominees on Thursday.

PRODUCERS GUILD NOMINATES

The Producers Guild of America named their 10 nominees for Best Film of  the Year on Saturday.  Four films that screened at TFF #50 made the list: Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, Poor Things and The Zone of Interest.

The other six films nominated were: American Fiction, Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer and Past Lives.

In a twist, the PGA's ten finalists also happen to be the ten films that MFB currently is predicting to be the ten nominees for the Best Picture Oscar (here's the current MTFB Best Picture list from Jan. 8th).

The PGA announces its winner on Feb. 25th.

THE FILM STAGE'S HOT 100

Last week The Film Stage posted its annual list of 100 "Most Anticipated" films for 2024.  As usual, I parsed the list for titles that seem like a reasonable possibility to be at TFF #51.  Last year I came up with a list of 25 films of which seven actually made the TFF #50 lineup:

SAG AND DGA NOMINEES AND TFF

The Screen Actors Guild and the Directors Guild of America announced their nominees for excellence in film in 2023 yesterday.  Four TFF films received nominations from SAG for acting excellence totaling seven nominations:

The Holdovers: Paul Giamatti-Lead Actor, Da'Vine Joy Randolph-Supporting Actress.

Poor Things: Emma Stone-Lead Actress and Willem Dafoe-Supporting Actor

Nyad: Annette Bening-Lead Actress and Jodie Foster-Supporting Actress

Rustin: Colman Domingo-Lead Actor

I was surprised that Mark Ruffalo was not nominated for Poor Things and that PT also missed for Best Ensemble.

Meanwhile, the Directors' Guild also announced their five nominees yesterday and two TFFers made the list of five names.  Alexander Payne for The Holdovers and Yorgos Lanthimos for Poor Things were each nominated.  They were joined Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon), Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer) and Greta Gerwig (Barbie).

The Sag Awards will be presented on Feb. 24th and the DGA will announce their winners on Feb. 10th.

GOLDEN GLOBES AND TFF

Last night the Golden Globes were handed out in Los Angeles. TFF winners were:

The Holdovers picked up two acting awards for Paul Giamatti (Actor in a Comedy or Musical) and Da'Vine Joy Randolph (Supporting Actress).

Anatomy of a Fall won two Globes for Best Non-English Language Film and Screenplay.

Poor Things also nabbed two Globes.  One for Best Film (Comedy or Musical) and Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) for Emma Stone.

Oppenheimer was the night's big winner with Globes for Best Picture (Drama), Cillian Murphy for Best Actor (Drama), Robert Downey Jr. for Best Supporting Actor, Direction and Score.

NATIONAL SOCIETY OF FILM CRITICS

The NSFC met on Saturday and voted for their choices for the best film work in 2023.  Six TFF films earned one of the top three spots in various categories.  In all TFF films won six categories.

The Zone of Interest win two: Best Direction and Actress (Huller and shared with Anatomy of a Fall).  Zone was also runner-up in three categories: Best Picture, Film Not in the English Language and Cinematography.

Anatomy of a Fall shared Huller's Best Actress trophy and was third for Best Film Not in the English Language.

The Holdovers with a win for Best Supporting Actress and a third place for Screenplay.

Fallen Leaves won Best Film Not in the English Language.

Andrew Scott won Best Actor for All of Us Strangers.

Poor Things was runner-up for Best Actress.
