MTFB OSCAR UPDATE: PREDICTING THE WINNERS PART FOUR

Here's the last set of initial predictions for what will win at the Oscar ceremony on March 2nd.  I'll have fresh predictions for Best Picture, Direction and the Acting categories on Thursday.  As always, TFF films are in Bold.

Comment: Among these four categories, TFF's best shot at a win looks to be Conclave in costumes and even that seems fairly unlikely.  Maybe the tightest category of any is Sound.  A Complete Unknown, Wicked and Dune Part Two seem to be in dead heat.  It'll be interesting to see if that changes over the next couple of weeks when we re-visit these categories.

CRITICS CHOICE AND TFF

The Critics Choice awards were presented on Friday.  TFF #51 films won seven awards total including a Best Picture win for Sean Baker's Anora.

Other TFF winners included:

Conclave: Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Acting Ensemble.

A Real Pain: Best Comedy (tied with Deadpool & Wolverine), and Supporting Actor (Kieran Culkin).

Emilia Perez: Best Foreign Language Film and Best Song (El Mal).

DIRECTORS' GUILD AND PRODUCERS' GUILD

Probably the most important Guild awards named their "Best of" 2024 on Saturday and both organizations awarded the same film.  Sean Baker won the DGA Best Director for a Feature Film award for Anora.  The PGA also awarded Anora as Best Picture.  The PGA is very interesting as it uses a preferential ballot just like the Academy does for Best Picture.

Also winning the DGA Award for Best First Time Feature was RaMell Ross for Nickel Boys, which, of course, was also a TFF #51 film.

With the three wins over the weekend, DGA, PGA and Critic's Choice, Anora will surely come raring back to the top of the list of predictions for Best Picture (My updated Best Picture predictions will be posted on Thursday).  It seems difficult to concoct plausible scenario for any other picture at this point.  

Anora's stunning set of wins this past weekend also suggests that Mikey Madison is firmly in a real tussle for Best Actress with Demi Moore. Moore had surged over the past few weeks.

As a matter of fact, Anora could be in line to win five of the six Oscars it's nominated for.  I could see it taking Picture, Direction, Actress, Original Screenplay and even Editing.  The exception likely being in Supporting Actor where Kieran Culkin seems almost unbeatable and if anyone has any shot at knocking him off the Oscar stage it's probably Edward Norton for A Complete Unknown rather than Anora's Yura Borisov.

Before we get to this post's Oscar nomination predictions, The Academy last night extended the nomination voting window by two days and moved the announcement of nominees to Sunday, January 19th due to the L.A. fires.  Now, onto the predictions which seem sort of a small consideration in light of what's going on in Southern California.

Here are updated nomination predictions for the Screenplay categories as well as for Best Costume Design, Makeup/Hair and Visual Effects. These categories were last predicted on Dec. 26th.  A film's previous rank appears to the right in parentheses. TFF #51 films are in Bold.

SAG AND DGA NOMINATIONS AND TFF

The Screen Actors Guild announced their 2024 nominees for film yesterday via a press release as opposed the originally planned live announcement.  That was scrapped as a result of the massive wild fires that are still ablaze this morning in the Los Angeles area.

In each of the six film categories here were the nominees from TFF #51 films:

Best Actor: Ralph Fiennes/Conclave.

Best Actress: Mikey Madison/Anora and Karla Sofia Gascon/Emilia Perez.

Best Supporting Actor: Yura Borisov/Anora, Kieran Culkin/A Real Pain and Jeremy Strong/The Apprentice.

Best Supporting Actress: Danielle Deadwyler/The Piano Lesson and Zoe Saldana/Emilia Perez.

Best Cast: Anora, Conclave and Emilia Perez.

TFF had no films nominated in the Action/Stunt Ensemble category.

Kind of surprising omissions: Angelina Jolie (Maria) in Lead Actress and Isabella Rossellini (Conclave) for Supporting Actress.

Lots of strength for A Complete Unknown and Wicked.

Meanwhile the Director's Guild of America (DGA) named its five nominees for Outstanding Directing for 2025 yesterday as well.  Three TFF #51 directors were nominated: Jacques Audiard/Emilia Perez, Sean Baker/Anora  and Edward Berger/Conclave.  The other two nominees are Brady Corbet/The Brutalist and James Mangold/A Complete Unknown.

At present, the Producers Guild is set to announce their nominees on Friday but that could change due to the fires as well.

INDIEWIRE'S 50+ MOST ANTICIPATED AND TFF #52

IndieWire published its list of 50+ films that they're most excited about for 2025 last week and from the list here are the films that, on their face, seem Telluride-friendly:

SAG AND DGA NOMINEES AND TFF

The Screen Actors Guild and the Directors Guild of America announced their nominees for excellence in film in 2023 yesterday.  Four TFF films received nominations from SAG for acting excellence totaling seven nominations:

The Holdovers: Paul Giamatti-Lead Actor, Da'Vine Joy Randolph-Supporting Actress.

Poor Things: Emma Stone-Lead Actress and Willem Dafoe-Supporting Actor

Nyad: Annette Bening-Lead Actress and Jodie Foster-Supporting Actress

Rustin: Colman Domingo-Lead Actor

I was surprised that Mark Ruffalo was not nominated for Poor Things and that PT also missed for Best Ensemble.

Meanwhile, the Directors' Guild also announced their five nominees yesterday and two TFFers made the list of five names.  Alexander Payne for The Holdovers and Yorgos Lanthimos for Poor Things were each nominated.  They were joined Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon), Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer) and Greta Gerwig (Barbie).

The Sag Awards will be presented on Feb. 24th and the DGA will announce their winners on Feb. 10th.

The Producers Guils announces their nominees tomorrow.

BAFTA WINNERS

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) named its "Best of" for 2022 last night and Edward Berger's All Quiet on the Western Front was the big winner picking up seven trophies including Best Film and Direction.

TFF Films that picked up hardware were:

Cate Blanchett winning Best Actress for TAR

Charlotte Wells for Best Debut for a British Writer, Director or Producer for Aftersun

TFF adjacent documentary (it was screened in Elk Park on the Wednesday night prior to TFF beginning) Navalny was named Best Documentary.

The DGA named Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert Best Director for a Feature Film for Everything Everywhere All at Once besting, among others Todd Field/TAR who was the only DGA nominee for a Feature Film from TFF.

Guilds, Globes and TFF / Another Bill Pence Remembrance / MTFB Oscar Update: Picture, Direction and More

GUILDS, GLOBES AND MORE

The films from TFF #49 (and #48) continue to have a tough time gaining traction during this awards season.  Since Monday's post we have witnessed Guild nominations from, among others, actors, directors, cinematographers and art directors.  The Producers Guild will announce its ten nominees later today and The Critics Choice Awards ceremony will occur Sunday and those two events are the last two big puzzle pieces/precursors prior to the Jan. 24th Oscar nomination announcement.  The WGA nominees won't influence voters as they will not announce their nominees until the day after Oscar nomination.  additionally, the WGA has ruled out so many probable nominees that the two lists are almost guaranteed to be wildly different.

Here's what was revealed this week from The Globes and Guilds regarding TFF films:

Golden Globes:  TFF films had a total of nine GG nominations going into Tuesday night's ceremony.  To recap, those were:

TAR (3): Best Picture-Drama, Actress (Blanchett), Screenplay

Women Talking (2): Best Screenplay and Score

Living (1): Best Actor/Drama (Nighy)

Empire of Light (1): Best Actress/Drama (Colman)

Close (1): Best Picture Not in the English Language

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (from TFF #48) (1): Best Animated Film

Of the nine nominations, TAR won twice for Cate Blanchett as Best Actress/Drama and for Todd Field's screenplay.  The complete list of GG winners is linked here.

Among the Guilds:

The Screen Actors Guild nominees from TFF films were: Best Actress Cate Blanchett/TAR, Best Actor: Bill Nighy/Living and Women Talking as Outstanding Cast.  Here's the link to all of the SAG nominees.

The Directors Guild nominated Todd Field/TAR.  Meanwhile, Charlotte Wells was nominated for Best First Time Director for Aftersun. The complete list of DGA Feature film nominees is linked here.  Field and Wells join Previously announced nominees for Documentary feature direction.  That list included two docs that played at TFF: Laura Poitras/All the Beauty and the Bloodshed and Matthew Heineman for Retrograde.

The American Society of Cinematographers nominated Roger Deakins/Empire of Light and Darius Khondji/Bardo for best documentary feature.  All of the ASC nominees can be found here. 

The Art Directors Guild nominated both Bardo and TAR for Best Production Design for a Contemporary Feature and Marcel the Shell with Shoes On for Animated feature.

ANOTHER BILL PENCE REMEMBRANCE

Howie Mosvhovitz, who has worked at the Telluride Film Festival since 1992 as a part of the Student Symposium staff, penned another very nice remembrance of TFF co-founder Bill Pence who died early last month. The piece was posted by the Colorado Sun on Tuesday.

Movshovitz writes in part:

"What was Bill like? He adored the movies. He was tremendously focused and disciplined. He expected the same from people who worked on the festival. He made sure to get the best film prints possible (years before digital); he expected good projection; he chose to work with people he found capable and interesting, and with Stella and Tom Luddy created a Telluride family of some of the most devoted lovers of cinema in the world — Chuck Jones, Werner Herzog, Bertrand Tavernier, Ken Burns, Louis Malle, the international programmer Pierre Rissient. Bill Pence never made himself a star — the festival and the films were the stars."

AWARDS WEEKEND-TWO WEEKS FROM OSCAR

The last 48 hours held a cascade of film awards.  BAFTA, DGA and The Critics' Choice Awards all landed.  here's the lowdown on each especially how they pertained to TFF #48 films:

BAFTA- The British Association of Film and Television Arts.  From TFF #48, The Power of the Dog won Best Film and Best Direction (Jane Campion).  Belfast won Best British Film and Will Smith won Best Actor for King Richard.  TFF #47's After Love won for Best Actress with Joanna Scanlan taking that prize.

THE CRITICS CHOICE AWARDS:

The CCAs where announced last night and here's the rundown on TFF #48 films:

The Power of the Dog won four: Picture, Director (Campion), Adapted Screenplay and Cinematography.

Belfast won three: Best Ensemble, Best Original Screenplay and Best Young Actor/Actress (Jude Hill)

King Richard's Will Smith won Best Actress.

DIRECTORS GUILD OF AMERICA

The Directors Guild of America awarded Jane Campion Best Director of a Feature Film for TFF #48 SHOW pony The Power of the Dog.  Additionally Maggie Gyllenhaal was named winner for Best First Feature for TFF #48 entrant The Lost Daughter.  

In Telluride-adjacent DGA news. this year's Guest Director and Shorts programmer Barry Jenkins won for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Movies for Television and Limited Series.

Oscar Winners Predix #4: Lead Acting, Score, Song and Sound / DGA Awards Some Telluride Players / Speaking of Directors / BAFTA Winners

 OSCAR PREDIX #4: LEADING ACTOR, SCORE, SONG AND SOUND

I'm back predicting the winners of this year's Oscars with less than two weeks left until the awards are passed out.  Today I am updating the lead acting categories as well as predicting the winners for Score, Song and Sound for the first time since nominations were announced.  As always TFF #47 film are in Bold.

BEST ACTRESS

1) Carey Mulligan/Promising Young Woman

2) Viola Davis/Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

3) Frances McDormand/Nomadland

4) Andra Day/The United States vs. Billie Holiday

5) Vanessa Kirby/Pieces of a Woman

Note: This race is really tight, so it seems, with Viola Davis and Carey Mulligan neck and neck and just a hair in front of Frances McDormand and Andra Day.  I have Mulligan in the top spot but that could change by Oscar morning when I will be posting my final predictions in all 23 categories.

BEST ACTOR

1) Chadwick Boseman/Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

2) Anthony Hopkins/The Father

3) Riz Ahmed/Sound of Metal

4) Steven Yeun/Minari

5) Gary Oldman/Mank

Note: Boseman stills seems to be the easy choice here but Hopkins BAFTA win yesterday does give one a little bit of a pause.

Note: Soul is a prohibitive favorite.

BEST SONG

Note: A fairly competitive category with Speak Now and Io Si (Seen) very close and a win for either Fight for You not out of the question.

Note: Sound of Metal is a prohibitive favorite.

THE DIRECTORS GUILD AWARDS SOME TELLURIDE PLAYERS

The Directors Guild of America named their winners for excellence for 2020/21 and a couple of the big awards went to directors who would have been in Telluride last September had the fest been able to occur.

Chloe Zhao was named Best Director for a feature film for Nomadland and Michael and Gregory Kershaw were named Best Director for The Truffle Hunters.  Both films were listed by the Telluride Film Festival as films that would have played at the 47th edition.

BAFTA WINNERS

Nomadland had a really fine night last night at the awards ceremony for the British Academy of Television Arts and Sciences winning four of the organizations Golden Masks.

Chloe Zhao's examination of the wanderers that make up a large community of R.V. dwellers in the American west won Best Picture as well Zhao for Best Director, Frances McDormand for Best Actress and Best Cinematography.

Florian Zeller's The Father also pulled off a major upset and a minor upset.  Anthony Hopkins upset Chadwick Boseman in the Best Actor category while Zeller and Christopher Hampton won Best Adapted Screenplay over Zhao for her Nomadland screenplay.

GUILD LOVE FOR NOMADLAND AND THE TRUFFLE HUNERS (AND MORE)

Both the Directors Guild and the Producers Guild announced their nominees earlier this week and TFF #47 selection Nomadland and Chloe Zhao was named on both lists.  

Additionally, other TFF #47 films were also haled by the DGA.  Florian Zeller was nominated for Best Frist Feature for The Father and Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw were nominated for Best Direction of a Feature Documentary.

The Truffle Hunters also was PGA nominated as well.  

The American Society of Cinematographers also named its nominees this week which included Nomadland in its Feature film lineup, The Truffle Hunters and another TFF #47 selection, Gianfranco Rosi's Notturno for Documentary Cinematography.
