OSCAR THOUGHTS

The BAFTA win for Austin Butler seemed to have lifted him over Brendan Fraser in the Best Actor race and BAFTA also seemed to solidify Cate Blanchett's position over Michelle Yeoh, then the SGA's happened last night and it's all back up in the air again.  

DGA, PGA  and SAG Ensemble wins for Everything Everywhere All at Once have solidified its position for Best Picture and Best Direction. 

PGA- TFF nominees were wiped out across the board.  TAR, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On and Retrograde were the only TFF films nominated and none won.  You could make a bit of a case for Navalny's PGA win for Documentary being TFF-adjacent as it screened prior to the fest's start at Elk Park.  Also, TFF touches just a bit on Everything Everywhere All at Once with the special screening of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and the appearance at the fest of Michelle Yeoh.

SAG- Everything Everywhere won everything everywhere.  Ensemble, Actress (Yeoh), Supporting Actress (Curtis) and Supporting Actor (Quan).  Brendan Fraser gained back some ground with his SAG win over Austin Butler.  That goes back to being a tight race.  Yeoh's win did the same in Best Actress with Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis's win throws Supporting Actress into a real tizzy.  

Quan's win means he is locked and the Ensemble prize seems to lock Everything Everywhere for Best Picture.  EEAAO could end up with six Oscars in two weeks time.

this next two weeks are going to be crazy.

EXTENDED TRAILER FOR SALVATORE

Sony Pictures Classics released an extended trailer this week for Luca Guadagnino's documentary Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams.  The film has already been released.

BAFTA WINNERS

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) named its "Best of" for 2022 last night and Edward Berger's All Quiet on the Western Front was the big winner picking up seven trophies including Best Film and Direction.

TFF Films that picked up hardware were:

Cate Blanchett winning Best Actress for TAR

Charlotte Wells for Best Debut for a British Writer, Director or Producer for Aftersun

TFF adjacent documentary (it was screened in Elk Park on the Wednesday night prior to TFF beginning) Navalny was named Best Documentary.

The DGA named Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert Best Director for a Feature Film for Everything Everywhere All at Once besting, among others Todd Field/TAR who was the only DGA nominee for a Feature Film from TFF.

OSCAR THOUGHTS:

Only one substantial change and that is in Best Direction where I have moved The Daniels of Everything Everywhere ahead of Steven Spielberg for the win on March 12th.

Otherwise, two weeks after I originally predicted these six categories, the leaders remain the same with Everything Everywhere winning Best Pic and the acting awards going to Blanchett, Fraser, Bassett and Quan.

We'll  re-visit these six categories in on Feb. 26th and then again for my final predictions.

What are the tightest categories at present, at least from my perspective:

Picture: Giving  Everything Everywhere a serious fight are: Banshees, Fabelmans, Maverick and maybe even TAR. Heck, even Elvis and All Quiet are outside shots.

Direction: It appears to be down to The Daniels and Spielberg.

Actress: Blanchett and Yeoh.  Tight.

Actor: Fraser, Butler and Farrell.  Also tight.

Original Screenplay: Everything Everywhere and Banshees.

Score: Babylon and Fabelmans

Documentary: Any of them except House of Splinters.

Cinematography: Elvis, All Quiet and TAR.

Editing: Maverick and Everything Everywhere

Makeup/Hair: Elvis and The Whale.

THE CRITICS CHOICE AND TFF

The Critics' Choice Awards were handed out last night and the film side was dominated by Everything Everywhere All at Once with five wins including Best Picture and Best Direction.   

Nine TFF films had been nominated with a combined 23 nominations.  At the end of the evening TFF films had landed with three wins.  TAR had two of those for Best Actress-Cate Blanchett and Best Score.  Sarah Polley won Best Adapted Screenplay for Women Talking.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced their longlist of finalists for potential nominations for the films of 2022.  13 films from TFF were longlisted in at least one category with Charlotte Wells' Aftersun and Todd Field's TAR the leaders from TFF with eight mentions each.  All told TFF films landed 40 mentions.  Here's the rundown:

THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF FILM CRITICS AND TFF

Five TFF films earned various degrees of notoriety from the National Society of Film Critics over the weekend.  Todd Field's TAR was the most decorated of all films as it was named Best Film as well as Cate Blanchett winning as Best Actress and Fields winning Best Screenplay.  Nina Hoss was first runner-up for Best Supporting Actress.

Charlotte Wells' Aftersun also did well as Wells was named Best Director.  The film was also the runner-up to TAR for Best Picture and Paul Mescal was first runner-up for Best Actor.

Laura Poitras' All the Beauty and the Bloodshed was named Best Documentary.

IF THE NOMINATIONS WERE ANNOUNCED TODAY...

So, I went back, now that I've posted predictions for all 20 Oscar feature film categories and harvested the numbers for TFF films and if the nominations were announced this morning this is what TFF films would be up for:

Women Talking- Five nominations and one other possibility: Best Picture, Direction, Supporting Actress (Buckley), Adapted Screenplay and Score.  The other possibility is Best Supporting Actor (Whishaw).

TAR- Four nominations and one other possibility: Best Picture, Direction, Actress (Blanchett), Original Screenplay.  The other possibility is for Editing.

Living- Two nominations and one other possibility: Best Actor (Nighy), Adapted Screenplay.  The other possibility is for Costume Design.

Several TFF films look likely to receive a single nomination:

Empire of Light: Cinematography and a possibility for Best Actress (Colman)

Close: International Feature

Holy Spider: International Feature

All the Beauty and the Bloodshed: Documentary Feature

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (TFF #48): Animated Feature 

A couple of other TFF films also have some possibility of sneaking into the list of nominees according to my current set of predictions,

Aftersun could earn a nomination for Best Actor (Mescal) and Original Screenplay.

Bardo might slide into a Cinematography nomination.

Of course with a month yet to go before nomination morning...all of this could change and likely will.
