Today I am updating predictions in the categories of Best Original and Adapted Screenplay.  These were last predicted on Dec. 12th.  In addition, I have included my first attempts to predict nominees in Makeup/Hair, Costumes and Visual Effects.  Past ranking is to the right of the performer in parentheses.  Films from TFF #49 are in Bold.

IF THE NOMINATIONS WERE ANNOUNCED TODAY...

So, I went back, now that I've posted predictions for all 20 Oscar feature film categories and harvested the numbers for TFF films and if the nominations were announced this morning this is what TFF films would be up for:

Women Talking- Five nominations and one other possibility: Best Picture, Direction, Supporting Actress (Buckley), Adapted Screenplay and Score.  The other possibility is Best Supporting Actor (Whishaw).

TAR- Four nominations and one other possibility: Best Picture, Direction, Actress (Blanchett), Original Screenplay.  The other possibility is for Editing.

Living- Two nominations and one other possibility: Best Actor (Nighy), Adapted Screenplay.  The other possibility is for Costume Design.

Several TFF films look likely to receive a single nomination:

Empire of Light: Cinematography and a possibility for Best Actress (Colman)

Close: International Feature

Holy Spider: International Feature

All the Beauty and the Bloodshed: Documentary Feature

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (TFF #48): Animated Feature 

A couple of other TFF films also have some possibility of sneaking into the list of nominees according to my current set of predictions,

Aftersun could earn a nomination for Best Actor (Mescal) and Original Screenplay.

Bardo might slide into a Cinematography nomination.

Of course with a month yet to go before nomination morning...all of this could change and likely will.

The International Press Association announced the nominees for its Satellite Awards earlier this morning.  TFF #49 earned 25 nominations with one other nomination for a TFF #48 film.  Here's the breakdown:

BIFA AND TFF #49

The British Independent Film Awards were named  this past week and TFF #49 fils garnered nine awards led by Aftersun which won more BIFAs than any other film with seven.  The Wonder and Living each picked up a single accolade.  here's the breakdown:

Aftersun: Best British Independent Film, Direction, Debut Director, Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing and Music Supervision.

The Wonder: Best Original Music.

Living: Best Production Design.

THE PLAYIST 100 AND TFF #50

As has become my habit, here is my review of The Playlist's just published 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2023 and some guesses as to what from that list that could make the lineup of the 50thedition of the Telluride Film Festival.  

Last year I ended up naming five films that DID play TFF #49: TAR, Armageddon Time, Bardo, Bones and All and Women Talking.  Looking back, it seems 5-6 films is about my average to get right from this exercise and generally they are films that are among the top 20 of the list.

INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARD NOMINEES ANNOUNCED

Film Independent announced the nominees for the 29th Independent Spirit Awards on Tuesday.  This year's ceremony is currently scheduled for Mar. 4, 2023.  Telluride Films nabbed 20 nominations overall with Sarah Polley's Women Talking named the winner of the Robert Altman Award which goes to the director, casting directors and the ensemble cast.

Nominations Breakdown:

TAR (7): Best Feature, Direction (Field), Lead Performance (Blanchett), Supporting Performance (Hoss), Screenplay, Cinematography and Editing.

Aftersun (5): Best First Feature, Lead Performance (Mescal), Breakthrough Performance (Corio), Cinematography and Editing.

Women Talking (3): Best Feature, Direction and Screenplay plus the above mentioned Robert Altman Award.

Bones and All (3): Best Feature, Lead Performance (Russell), Supporting Performance (Rylance).

All the Beauty and the Bloodshed (1): Best Documentary

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (1): Best Editing.  Marcel was a selection of TFF #48.

Everything, Everywhere All at Once lead the pack with a total of 8 nominations including Best Feature.  I sort of regard it as Telluride-adjacent because of the special screening of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Michelle Yeoh's presence at TFF #49.

TIFF is using a drip-drip-drip method of announcing World Premieres that they haven't used before.  As that list grows, I will be posting so we know which films are at TIFF and won't be at TFF#49. Those announced to date are:

As you can see, there is extensive overlap between the NBP list and my Ten Bets.  NBP has five films listed that I don't and any of the five wouldn't be a real shocker if included: Decision to Leave, EO, See How They Run, Triangle of Sadness or The Whale.

Here's what Matt and the NBP folks have as Venice premieres that would jump the Atlantic to play at TFF a couple of days later:

Bardo, The Master Gardener, TAR and The Whale.  Another note...NBP has Andrew Dominik's Blonde playing both Venice and Toronto but not T-ride.  So...to anyone with any juice at Netflix or within the programmers at TFF...hear my plea that Blonde makes a stop in Colorado between the two.

WOMEN TALKING WHERE?

Another Jordan Ruimy/World of Reel post of interest this week was the buzz about which fall fest was going to land Sarah Polley's Women Talking as a World Premiere.  I have felt relatively confident that it would play Telluride as Polley has made the trip to the San Juans previously but who knows?

Ruimy suggests that Toronto wants it very badly as a WP and should Polley and distributor United Artists/Orion go that way...no TFF #49.  If Venice lands it, TFF #49 remains a possibility.  Of course Polley's last feature length film, the doc Stories We Tell, did the Venice/Telluride dance in 2012 but the distributor there was Roadside Attractions.

TFF #47 DOCS SHORT LISTED

The International Documentary Association announced their short list for their awards this past week and three films from the TFF #47 announced list made the cut:

Sam Pollard's MLK/FBI

Gianfranco Rosi's Notturno

Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw's The Truffle Hunters

According to Indiewire's Anne Thompson, the IDA will announce nominees on Nov. 24th and winners will be announced via a virtual ceremony at some point in January 2021.

BEE GEES DOC IS DATED BY HBO

Frank Marshall's documentary about the Bee Gees, The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend Broken Heart, which was a TFF #47 selection has been scheduled by HBO and HBO Max.  Deadline reports that the film will drop on HBO on Dec. 12th at 8:00pm (EST) and that it will also be available to stream on HBO Max.

HBO also released a first trailer for the film this past week.  Here that is from YouTube:

TIDBITS

Among this Monday's "Tidbits"...

The Cannes Film Festival has announced three separate contingency plans for re-scheduling should Covid conditions in France require that they move off their currently scheduled (and traditional) dates in May (11-22).  Variety reports that Cannes organizers are eye-balling three different sets of dates in July and August.

AND... Searchlight Films have grabbed a new film in development.  Currently titled Dust, the film has Clare Foy attached to star at the moment.  I include it into today's post for a couple of reasons:

1) Searchlight and Telluride have had a really good relationship over the years...sooo...maybe a future TFF selection.  and

2) The film is set in the dust bowl of 1930's Oklahoma.  Yea...that's right...the film is set 90 years ago in my backyard.  HELLO SEARCHLIGHT...Location shooting?  Call me.  Extras in the area: Give me a ring-a-ding.  Research co-ordination: Hello???  I mean Guymon, OK. is literally the heart/bullseye for the Dust Bowl.  My only actual IMDb entry is the special thanks for Ken Burns' The Dust Bowl.  The wife and I did some location scouting and co-ordination.
