We're a couple of weeks away from the dual announcements of the first wave of Toronto films and the majority of films that will play the Venice fest and both of those lists will begin to give us our first real opportunity to do some inductive reasoning and a good idea of some of the Telluride lineup. Until then, you're stuck with my best guesses.

In the hopper:  The Lost City of Z, Gold, From the Land of the Moon.  We could see any, all or none of these.

THE RULES DON'T APPLY FOR THE RULES DON'T APPLY

Warren Beatty's new film...he says won't be in a fall film fest.  Warren Beatty is a trickster.  He's probably not spoofing us...but he might be.

And if he is?  

Honestly, the most likely spots would be AFI and New York.  Venice and then Toronto.  Telluride would be probably the last possibility...which makes it possible if Beatty is playing a game.  Do I think it's coming?  Nope.  But what if it did?

Anyway...the folks at 20th Century Fox released a trailer for the film early yesterday morning.  Here it is from YouTube:

Cannes Opens / More Views from Films in France / New Potential Telluride Players

Hello Everyone on this Thursday...


CANNES OPENS

The 69th Cannes Film Fest opened with great fanfare and the screening of the latest film from Woody Allen, Cafe Society.  For the next week and a half, we'll be parsing the critical reactions out of France as well as the films that win prizes on May 22nd as we try to divine clues to any and all films that might make their way from the Croisette to the San Juans.  Stay tuned...it should be fun.



MORE VIEWS FROM FILMS IN FRANCE

The P.R. onslaught has continued unabated this week for Cannes films that will be making their premieres in the next few days.  Those that seem, at least to me, to have some Telluride potential that revealed some of themselves this week included:

NEW POTENTIAL TELLURIDE PLAYERS

A couple of notes about news that came to light yesterday...

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North American rights to Paul Verhoven's Cannes competition
piece, Elle, starring Isabelle Huppert.  The SPC but makes Elle a film worth keeping an eye on for Labor Day.  Normally I wouldn't have thought about a Verhoven film for T-ride but the SPC presence changes the equation.

And, the release yesterday of a trailer for Mira Nair's Queen of Katwe made us take note.  It gets some Telluride consideration because of Nair's presence as its director and her past appearances at The SHOW (The Namesake, Salaam Bombay).  Additionally, the film is set for a Telluride friendly Sept. 23 and although its distributor, Disney, doesn't have a great Telluride presence, they have had recent T-ride appearances with animated films: The Wind Rises, Paperman, Get a Horse.

Signs and Suppositions: From the Moon to The Lost City / Kickstart Key Transitions

Good Monday Peeps...

SIGNS AND SUPPOSITIONS: FROM THE MOON TO THE LOST CITY

Two bits of news that could portend films that I've really kept off the TFF #43 radar so far this early spring.  The first is focused on the Nicole Garcia film From the Land of the Moon starring Marion Cotillard.  Word came this week that the film had been acquired for U.S. distribution by Sundance Selects which (along with its partner IFC Films) has had a significant presence at Telluride over the years including such recent films as: 45 Years (last year), Seymour: An Introduction, Two Days One Night (the last Cotillard film that was screened at TFF) and Blue is the Warmest Color.

The acquisition by Sundance Selects is the biggest reason I think that the film could show at The SHOW.  Here's coverage from Variety:

Meanwhile, over the weekend we saw what The Film Stage characterized as a "sales trailer" drop for James Gray's The Lost City of Z.  Although The Lost City doesn't necessarily strike me as a Telluride film...I have been waiting for a James Gray project to show up at Telluride since 2012.

Gray was in Telluride that year and showed a few scenes from The Immigrant as a part of the tribute to Marion Cotillard that year.  I have also reported in the past that Gray has attended TFF's soring party in Los Angeles.

Finally both The Film Stage and The Playlist (stories linked below) suggest a "fall film festival" appearance is likely.  The Playlist speculates Venice.

So...maybe The Lost of City of Z gets found over Labor Day weekend in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado.  Check the story and trailer here:

KICKSTART KEY TRANSITIONS

Friend of MTFB Christopher Schiller has completed his short film project Key Transitions.  Schiller directed and wrote the film.  I suspect he did any number of other jobs in getting the film to completion.

Schiller has established a Kickstarter account to raise funds to "enhance its festival exposure". That seems like a more than worthy endeavor...so...go here:
