BREAKING: TORONTO ANNOUNCED NEXT WAVE OF FILMS

The Toronto International Film Festival announced its next wave of films (over 100 titles added this morning) and here are the primary takeaways as far as Telluride is concerned:

"Tow Days, One Night" from the Dardnnes Brothers seems a lock for T-ride now as Toronto lists it as a Canadian premiere.  Meanwhile, Olivier Assasyas "Clouds of Sils Maria" is a North American premiere so won't be playing Telluride.

Other films that I have had an occasional Telluride vibe for that will not play after all are:

"Girlhood"
"Charlie's Country"
"Bird People"
"Pride"
"The Search"

Still no inclusion at Toronto for:

"Unbroken"
"Big Eyes"
"Fury"
"Interstellar"
"Trash"
"Slow West"
"Suffragette"
"Kill the Messenger"

And nothing about Bill Murray's "St. Vincent"...hmmm...

More later...

I think Trash's world premiere is being held at the Rio film festival. Also something to consider, perhaps a tribute to the Dardennes brothers since Telluride so famously likes to hold tributes for directors as much as they do for actors.

"Trash" does appear to be set to World Premiere in Brazil in October but I'm not sure that would preclude a Telluride play. Additionally, the Dardennes were tributed by Telluride in 2005.

Looking at Focus' slate, they are world premiering Theory of Everything at TIFF, but no Telluride or Venice;
Boxtrolls will world premiere at Venice but not TIFF and likely not Telluride. Given the lack of overlap, I wonder if Focus is keeping each of their slated films to separate festivals so they don't have to compete for press? I dunno, that's just a hypothesis and prob sounds silly. It's one reason why I've been thinking Kill the Messenger will likely premiere at Telluride, but not go to TIFF or Venice. I think there's a chance KTM might skip the festival circuit completely too; the screening reactions have been insanely positive, but it seems like a very loaded topic that runs the risk of being misconstrued by some of the people depicted in the film. Also another hypothesis.

Love your blog BTW. I am following you now on twitter.

Hey "Frown"... your KTM theory isn't "silly" at all. Not seeing it today on Toronto's latest list increases its chances. Of course it could go to New York or the AFI Fest or, as you say, eschew the fest circuit altogether.
