Turning the Page / Oscar Experts Early Picks: Variety / New Teaser for The Only Living Pickpocket in New York / New Poster for A Long Winter / Visitations: Oppenheim on You Can See Everything

TURNING THE PAGE

We've made the run of post-festival ratings with the reportage of results from my annual poll of the People, the Professionals and then the Composite of both together.  It looks like several films that screened at TFF #53 have the potential for Oscar success.  So, as has become the custom here at MTFB, we turn the page to what happens now in awards season to the films that made up the TFF #53 lineup.

GOLD DERBY'S EARLY LINE

Here's where Gold Derby experts have the Best Picture are at as an opening salvo on Oscar Season.

For quick reference here the ten movies that GD experts place as getting a Best Picture nomination (TFF #53 films are in Bold):

1) The Odyssey
2) Wild Horse Nine
3) Project Hail Mary
4) La Bola Negra
5) The Debut
6) The Invite
7) Dune: Part Three
8) Fjord
9) Digger
10) I Play Rocky

Three other TFF #53 films are in the Gold Derby Top 20 for Best Picture:

12) Elsinore
15) Club Kid
19)  Fatherland

OSCAR EXPERTS EARLY PICKS: VARIETY

I'm going to run through about half-a-dozen or so Oscar experts and their early predictions focusing on what they're saying vis-a-vis TFF #53 films.  We start with Clayton Davis of Variety.  Here's every TFF #53 film he predicts as nominees for the 21 feature categories:

Leading the way from the Davis predictions is La Bola Negra with 11 predicted nominations:

La Bola Negra (11): Best Picture, International Feature, Direction, Supporting Actress (Cruz), Adapted Screenplay, Production Design. Cinematography, Costumes, Editing, Sound, Score.

Wild Horse Nine (6): Best Picture, Direction, Actor (Malkovich), Supporting Actor (Rockwell), Original Screenplay, Editing.

The Debut (5): Best Picture, Actress (Moore), Supporting Actor (Giamatti), Original Screenplay, Song.

Tender Loving Care (3): Best Actress (Bailey), Supporting Actress (O'Flynn), Original Screenplay.

Elsinore (2): Best Actor (Scott), Casting

You Can See Everything (1): Best Picture.

The Only Living Pickpocker in New York (1): Best Actor (Tutturro).

Fatherland (1): Best Actress (Huller),

Club Kid (1): Best Original Screenplay.

Everest: The Other Side (1): Best Documentary.

Fjord (1): Best International Feature.

Minotaur (1) Best International Feature.

A total of 12 TFF #53 films would earn 34 Oscar nominations per the predictions from Davis.

The Composite Telluride for 2026 / Trailers for Wild Horse Nine and You Can See Everything

THE COMPOSITE TELLURIDE FOR 2026

We cap off the run of posts that highlight the way people rated the films at Telluride today with what I call The Composite Telluride in which I add up a film's ratings from both The People and the Pros.

This year nine films had enough responses from both groups to make this list.  There are seven films that made one list but didn't make The Composite because they failed to get enough people to see them from one group or the other.  Those were You Can See Everything which didn't make the People's list and Rose, Tenzing, Liberation, The Only Living Pickpocket in New York, Fatherland and Alpha Gang which weren't seen by enough Pros.

So, here's the Composite.  Each title is listed with it's composite rating (on a scale of 10) and its positions on the Pro list then the Peoples list.

1) Wild Horse Nine 9.05 [2-2]
2) La Bola Negra 8.64 [6-1]
3) Club Kid 8.57 [4-4]
4) The Debut 8.29 [5-6]
5) Fjord 8.23 [3-8]
6) Elsinore 8.16 [8-3]
7) Tender Loving Care 7.22 [7-12]
8) Ink 7.16 [9-11]
9) A Long Winter 5.99 [10-14]

Another note to pass along are the films that were seen most frequently...indicating the initial interest, or lack thereof, for a particular film.

These were the hottest films using that metric (according to the People's Poll):

1) The Debut with 83.7% of respondents having seen it.
2) Wild Horse Nine 84.1%
3) Elsinore 81.0%
4) Ink 77.8%
5) La Bola Negra (Tie) 61.9%
5) Club Kid (Tie) 61.9%

And for some historical perspective:

You Can See Everything will move to the top of the list for ratings by The Professionals.  Its 4.83 rating average will top Moonlight by .01 of a point.  Moonlight had a 4.82.

Wild Horse Nine will become the #10 all-time rated by the Professionals with its 4.62 jumping ahead of La La Land.

La Bola Negra becomes the #8 all time highest rated film for The People's Poll with its 4.56.

Wild Horse Nine also becomes the #9 rated film on the all time Composite list with its 9.05.

La Bola Negra becomes the #25 rated film on the all time Composite list with its 8.64.

New Venue for TFF #53 / Huntsinger on TFF #53 for Variety / EW Talks with McDonagh about Wild Horse Nine / Variety with Mike Leigh / First Looks at Ink

NEW VENUE FOR TFF #53

Maybe the biggest TFF news of last week was that there will be a new venue for the fest to use.  It will be located in Mountain Village.  No word that I'm aware of in terms of the number of seats but you should help to replace the seats we've been missing from the lack of The Nugget while it undergoes renovation.

Here's the flyer announcing the new venue....that appears to be named "The Marvin":

HUNTSINGER ON TFF #53 FOR VARIETY

Variety's Chief Awards Editor Clayton Davis sat down with TFF Executive Director Julie Huntsinger recently to talk all things TFF.

Key takeaways:

Huntsinger says TBAs are part of the plan again this year including:

"...one is going to be a true TBA — you won’t know what it is until you walk into the cinema."

That's very exciting.

She also says that Digger and Dune 3 are still in post-production...

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY TALKS WITH MARTIN MC DONAGH ABOUT WILD HORSE NINE

We're pretty sure Martin McDonagh's Wild Horse Nine will be announced on Thursday as a part of the TFF #53 lineup.  I'm certainly hoping that we've read the tea leaves correctly.

Entertainment Weekly has a nice interview with McDonagh about the film which you can find linked here.

VARIETY WITH MIKE LEIGH...IS TENDER LOVING CARE HIS LAST FILM?

Variety's Clayton Davis also talked to filmmaker Mike Leigh about his new film Tender Loving Care which we also think is Telluride bound.  It may be Leigh's final film.  Davis writes:

"Bleecker Street is funding “Tender Loving Care,” Leigh’s sweet, funny study of two social workers, their family and the people they look after. It’s the lowest-budgeted feature of Leigh’s career, and, he says with some reluctance, almost certainly his final film."

FIRST LOOKS AT INK

Vanity Fair posted some first look photos from Vanity Fair from Danny Boyle's Ink.  It's in my top five to try and catch at the fest.  Here's a glimpse:

TRIBUTE CLUES FROM TELLURIDE

One of the ways that often give clues about what direction Tributes might be going has traditionally been to look at films scheduled for free in Elks Park prior to the start of the fest.  Earlier this morning the flyer for the free screening s is up:

It's difficult to see here, but Wednesday night is a screening of Project Hail Mary and Thursday is Being John Malkovich.  Draw your own conclusions,,,

OTHER OUTLETS TALK TELLURIDE

Who's On the Guest List? / Gold Derby Spills Some Tea / Does Gibney Play Anyway?

WHO'S ON THE GUEST LIST?

One of the great things about Telluride is the folks that come to support the films that screen there.  Bountiful Q&A's give regular Joe's an opportunity to hear from great directors, actors and other creatives about the film's they're involved in.

So it's always fun to take a look at the talent who might make the trip to southwest Colorado.  Here's a rundown of some of the films that MTFB thinks will make the grade at Telluride and the stars that might be in town with those projects.

ALPHA GANG: Cate Blanchett, Dave Bautista, Chris Pine, Lea Seydoux
BUCKING FASTARD: Rooney Mara, Kate Mara, Orlando Bloom, Domhnall Gleeson
CLUB KID: Cara Delevingne, Diego Calva
THE DEBUT: Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti, Jesse Eisenberg
ELSINORE: Andrew Scott, Oliva Colman.
FATHERLAND: Sandra Huller, August Diehl
FJORD: Renate Reinsve, Sebastian Stan
GENTLE MONSTER: lea Seydoux, Catherine Denueve
THE IDIOT(S): Amy Lou Wood, Johnny Flynn, Vicky Kreips
INK: Jack O'Connell, Guy Pearce, Claire Foy
LA BOLA NEGRA (THE BLACK BALL): Penelope Cruz, Guitarricardelafuente, Glenn Close
THE LIBERATION: Carrie Coon, Tracy Letts, Lily James
A LONG WINTER: Kit Connor, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Caitriona Balfe
THE MAN I LOVE: Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Rami Malek, Rebecca Hall
ROSE: Sandra Huller
TENDER LOVING CARE: Kate O'Flynn
TENZIG: Willem Dafoe, Tom Hiddleston, Caitriona Balfe
THE UNKNOWN: Lea Seydoux
WILD HORSE NINE: Sam Rockwell, John Malkovich, Steve Buscemi, Parker Posey, Tom Waits

And a few from the "Possibilities" list:

THE BASICS OF PHILOSOPHY: Bill Pullman, Dana Delaney, Jack Huston
DIAMOND: Andy Garcia, Dustin Hoffman, Bill Murray
PRIMETIME: Robert Pattinson, Merritt Weaver

GOLD DERBY SPILLS SOME TEA

In a post from Gold Derby from last week titled:

"2026 fall festival scorecard: Who’s heading to Venice, Telluride, TIFF, and NYFF — and who’s skipping the circuit?"

They name seven films that..."Despite the Telluride Film Festival's long-standing tradition of keeping its official program strictly under wraps until the eve of Labor Day weekend, the tea leaves are brewing up some obvious premieres..."

The films:

Bucking Fastard
The Debut
Elsinore
Ink
A Long Winter
Tender Loving Care
Wild Horse Nine

They also suggest that Primetime is a possibility.

DOES GIBNEY PLAY ANYWAY?

We already have discerned that Alex Gibney's documentary about Elon Musk is not going to play Telluride, but could another Gibney doc make the TFF #53 lineup?

I'm talking about Knife, Gibney's look at the 2022 attempt on the life author Salman Rushdie.  Rushdie, as of TFF #52 was still listed among a member of TFF's "Esteemed Council of Advisors in last year's TFF #52 program so it seems like a no-brainer, except...the doc has screened already in the USA.

Knife world premiered at Sundance this year and has also been programmed at Sundance, Chicago's DOC 10 fest, Nantucket and it has screened in New York.  On the other hand, the film is being distributed by Abramorama which had Ask E. Jean at TFF #52.

I'm putting its chances at 40% and let's see what happens.

Ten (Plus) Bets for TFF #53-Vol. 7 / Who's Got What-Distributors: Amazon-MGM and Searchlight / Mike Leigh...May Be Done / Today's Correction: Possible Love

TEN (PLUS) BETS FOR TFF #53-VOL. 7

Only five weeks until we find out with certainty what will play at TFF #53.  Here's a reminder of what MTFB was predicting last week:

1) The Debut
2) Elsinore
3) Ink
4) Club Kid
5) La Bola Negra (The Black Ball)
6) A Long Winter
7) Minotaur
8) Fjord
9) Everest: The Other Side
10) Gentle Monster
11) Tenzig
12) Tender Loving Care
13) Bucking Fastard
14) Fatherland
15) The Story of Documentary Film

Other possibilities: Behemoth! Yellow Letters, Rose, Alpha Gang.

And here's your updated "Bets":

1) Elsinore
2) The Debut
3) Ink
4) Club Kid
5) La Bola Negra (The Black Ball)
6) A Long Winter
7) Fjord
8) Minotaur
9) Everest: The Other Side
10) Tender Loving Care
11) Gentle Monster
12) Tenzig
13) Bucking Fastard
14) Fatherland
15) The Story of Documentary Film

Other possibilities: Yellow Letters, Rose, Alpha Gang, The Unknown, Sense and Sensibility.

WHO'S GOT WHAT-DISTRIBUTORS-AMAZON-MGM AND SEARCHLIGHT

We're continuing to look at distribution companies that have a robust presence at Telluride over the last five years.  Today we look at both Amazon-MGM and then Searchlight.

AMAZON-MGM

Here are films distributed by Amazon-MGM at Telluride the last five fests:

2021: Encounter
2022: Wildcat, Goodnight Oppy
2023: Saltburn, Cassandro
2024: Nickel Boys
2025: Man on the Run

As I looked through the films Amazon-MGM might screen at Telluride these seemed the most possible:

Madden
Verity

I had been thinking that I Play Rocky was an outside Telluride shot but its World Premiere status at Toronto nuked that notion.

Chances:

Madden 35%
Verity 25%

SEARCHLIGHT

As for Searchlight, two films seem most "in the mix" with the reveal last Tuesday that Tony Gilroy's Behemoth! will be the New York Film Festival's Centerpiece program as a World Premiere and thus not appearing at Telluride.

Wild Horse Nine (M. McDonagh)
Sweetsick (A. Birch)

McDonagh's Wild Horse Nine seems to be Amazon-MGM's big push this fall for awards season.  That makes sense as McDonagh's last two films ( Three Billboard and Banshees of Inisherin) earned 16 nominations.  Wild Horse Nine certainly has the pedigree to be a film that fests are strongly pursuing this year.

Alice Birch's Sweetsick is reportedly in post-production with various sources suggesting either a late 2026 release or early 2027.

Chances for either of these films for a TFF #53 play:

Wild Horse Nine 50%
Sweetsick 20%

IMAGE OF ELSINORE

We got a first look from Focus Features of Andrew Scott in Elsinore which is very likely World Premiering at Telluride.  Here that is:

IMDb description:

"A powerful, deeply moving and inspiring story of the actor Ian Charleson who faced incredible odds while preparing to give the performance of his life in Hamlet at the National Theatre in London."

We found out yesterday that Elsinore will open the BFI/London Film Festival in October.

Focus has announced a Nov. 20th release date for the film.

MIKE LEIGH...MAY BE DONE

A number of sources indicate that Mike Leigh's upcoming Tender Loving Care may be his last.  TLC looks likely to screen at TFF #53.

Indiewire reported on Tuesday"

"British filmmaker Mike Leigh, one of the few directors to have won both the Venice Golden Lion and the Cannes Palme d’Or, told IndieWire that his upcoming feature, “Tender Loving Care,” may be his final film."

Leigh revealed a diagnosis of a disease that attacks a person's musculature.

TODAY'S CORRECTION

In last Monday's post I referenced an a analysis from The Playlist that included some speculation that Possible Love could play Telluride.  However, Toronto lists it as a North American Premiere which, absent some premiere status snafu, would mean it will not play Telluride.

Cannes Continues / Some Buzz from Eisenberg / Mike Leigh Has a Title

 CANNES CONTINUES

The 79th Cannes Film Fest has passed its halfway mark and is barreling toward its conclusion this weekend. Taking a look at the metrics from Screen Daily, Ioncinema and Cannes-ratings.org, here are the films that seem to be at the forefront critically (*** indicates that the film is on my TFF watch list):

From Screen Daily (films in Palme competition with a better than 2.5 rating on a four point scale):

1) Fatherland 3.3***
2) All of a Sudden 3.1***
3) Paper Tiger 2.8***
3) Hope 2.8***
5) Naji Notes 2.5

https://edition.pagesuite-professional.co.uk/html5/reader/production/default.aspx?pubname=&edid=7d45952f-7ff1-4ba7-b98c-78b6cf24da1e

From Ioncinema (films in Palme competition with a better than 3.0 rating on a five point scale):

1) Fatherland 3.7***
2) Fjord 3.5***
3) All of a Sudden 3.3***
4) Paper Tiger 3.2***
4) The Beloved 3.2
6) Hope 3.1***

https://www.ioncinema.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/2026-cannes-grid-fjord.jpg

From Cannes-ratings.org (films in Palme competition with a better than 7.0 rating on a 10 point scale and a minimum of 8 reviews):

1) Fjord 7.81***
2) Bitter Christmas 7.53***
3) All of a Sudden 7.24***
3) The Beloved 7.24

Of special note is the hugely favorable critical reception to Club Kid from the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes.  It has a stellar 8.43 rating to lead all films in any section of the fest.  News broke on Tuesday that the film had been picked up for U.S. distribution by A24 after a bidding war that included: Netflix, Searchlight, Focus Features and MUBI according to this story from Variety.

The critical reception, the players vying for the film and the ultimate winning bid is enough to make me pay attention to it as a possible TFF selection.   Stay tuned.

Club Kid is a first feature for director/writer Jordan Firstman. .  The IMDb description is:

"A washed-up New York party promoter is forced to turn his life around when an unexpected visitor arrives."

https://cannes-ratings.org/

According to Kalshi  (as of yesterday), Minotaur has the best odds to win the Palme followed by All of a Sudden and Fatherland.

SOME BUZZ FOR EISENBERG

Spooking around the interwebs yesterday I came across the news that what has been referred to as "The Untitled Jesse Eisenberg Musical Comedy now has an actual title: No One Cares.  It also seems that the film has been screened at Cannes and it seems that the screening went well.  So says World of Reel.

WOR describes the film as follows:

"Starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti, with Eisenberg also appearing briefly, “No One Cares” is set in “the high-stakes world of community theater,” and follows a shy woman (Moore) who is unexpectedly cast in a local production of an original musical."

Giamatti plays the director of the community theater production.  I think it sounds great and I have had it on my TFF #53 watch list for some time mostly because Eisenberg screened A Real Pain at TFF in 2024.  That seemed to work out fairly well.  The film is being distributed by A24 which doesn't hurt.  Additionally WOR writes:

"A24 is positioning the film for a fall premiere, potentially at the Telluride Film Festival and then at the Toronto International Film Festival. An Oscar campaign will likely be mounted for all key players involved."

MIKE LEIGH HAS A TITLE

Another "Untitled Project" has an actual title and that's the next film from director Mike Leigh.  The name: Tender Loving Care.  Past that we know almost nothing about the project.  You can likely glean a bit of info from what IMDb still lists as "Untitled 2025 Mike Leigh Project"  which we assume is the same thing as the newly christened Tender Loving Care.

https://pro.imdb.com/title/tt35638092/details

The IMDb entry reveals that Bleeker Street is the U.S. distributor.

Considering Leigh's frequent stops at TFF over the years (Secrets and Lies, Happy-Go-Lucky, Another Year and others) you have to believe there's a decent chance that if it's ready, Tender Loving Care has a decent shot to play TFF #53.
