The Composite Telluride- TFF #49/ Indiewire's Best of the Fest / Variety's Best of the Fests / Metacritic and TFF #49 Films / Trailer for Theater of Thought

THE COMPOSITE TELLURIDE- TFF #49




Here's my annual final step of computation that has become an MTFB tradition.  It's The Composite Telluride ratings in which I add the average from The People and The Professionals to provide one more glimpse of how The SHOW's films were perceived.   

To begin, here's the history of The Composite Telluride with the film's combined rating in parentheses and its position on each of the two lists in brackets.

Soooo...Here are your results of The Composite Telluride for 2022. Ten films made both The Peoples Telluride list and The Professionals Telluride list.  The respective rankings for each film are included to the right in [brackets] with the Pro's rating on the left and the People's on the right:

Big disconnects between the Pros and the People were  Armageddon Time and Empire of Light which were significantly favored by the Pros over where the People rated them and Lady Chatterley's Lover and Living which had an substantial lead in the People's poll compared to where the Pros had them.

If you're talking the Best Picture Oscar, ending up in the top spot for The Composite Telluride is a good place to be.  Since I started it, The Composite Telluride has pointed to the Best Picture winners in seven out of nine years missing for 2019 because Green Book won and last year in which CODA won.

That said, I find it unlikely that TAR wins Best Picture this year.  To my mind, the TFF #49 film with the most potential for winning BP is Sarah Polley's Women Talking and even that seems, at this point, a long shot.  I'll have my first stab at making Oscar predictions for Picture, Directing and Acting categories up on MTFB in Monday's post.

INDIEWIRE'S BEST OF THE FESTS




The crew at Indiewire put together a list of what they evaluate as the best films to have played the triumvirate of film fests just concluded (Telluride, Venice and Toronto).  It was posted last Monday.  TFF #49 films that made the list of 15 included

VARIETY'S BEST OF THE FESTS




Variety also posted a list of the 17 films that their staff have chosen as the best of the three fests.  The list includes three films that played at Telluride: TAR, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed and Women Talking.



METACRITIC AND TFF #49 FILMS




Similar to the above post from Indiewire, Metacritic posted an article on Sunday that included their collective critical rating for many films that have played Telluride, Venice and/or Toronto.  I took the liberty of adding to their list three films that played in Cannes in May that were also programmed by Telluride a few weeks back.

THEATER OF THOUGHT TRAILER

We found out earlier this week that a trailer has been released for Werner Herzog's latest documentary.  The film is described at IMDB as follows:

"Werner Herzog sets his sights on yet another mysterious landscape - the human brain - for clues as to why a hunk of tissue can produce profound thoughts and feelings while considering the philosophical, ethical, and social implications of fast-advancing neural technology."

If you're talking the Best Picture Oscar, ending up in the top spot for The Composite Telluride is a good place to be.  Since I started it, The Composite Telluride has pointed to the Best Picture in seven out of eight years missing for 2018-19 because Breen Book won breaking the TFF string at that point.

It's my guess that had TFF #47 had happened last year that Nomadland would likely have topped this list as well.

The composite rating for Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog allows it to move into The All-Time Composite Top Ten at the #9 spot.  It will displace La La Land from the new Top Ten, which now looks like this:

BELFAST WINS IN TORONTO




Sie Kenneth Branagh's Belfast won the Toronto International Film Festival's People's Choice Award Saturday night.  That's the top prize handed out by TIFF each year and has, in the past, included such films as: Nomadland, Green Book, La La Land, The Imitation Game, 12 Years a Slave and Slumdog Millionaire among others.

Additionally, in a good night for TFF #48 films, Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi's The Rescue won TIFF's People's Choice for Documentary and Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog reportedly finished third in the voting for the overall award.

In addition actor Benedict Cumberbatch was feted with a TIFF Tribute Actor Award for The Power of the Dog and The Electrical Life of Louis Wain.  Both films were a part of the TFF #48 lineup.

The conventional wisdom at the moment is that Belfast's rise at Telluride followed by this win puts it squarely in the middle of the upcoming Oscar derby.  The film is set for release in the U.S. on Nov. 12th.

MTFB'S FIRST OSCAR PREDIX FOR 2021




It's transition time.  With the posting of today's Composite Telluride comes the signal that we are turning the corner into Oscar season.  Telluride, Venice and Toronto have come and gone and it's noe time to steer the ship toward the Oscar horizon.  The Oscars for this year will be held March 27, 2022.

We'll start off the the Big category and then expand the predictions as we move forward through time.  So, here's the MTFB starting lineup for Best Picture with TFF #48 films in Bold.

Regular readers of this space know that The Composite Telluride is the melding of the ratings of The People and The Professionals.  My thought when I began putting composites together was that it might give an even more complete overview of the reactions, in a general sense, of the attendees to each year's festival

Both Parasite and The Two Popes will join the All Time Composite Top Ten displacing Spotlight and Foxcatcher.

The biggest disconnect between The Peeps and The Pros this year came with the evaluation of Waves where The Pros substantially regarded it more highly (The Pros gave it their fourth highest average rating while The People had it at #12).  Two other films that were somewhat of a disconnect were The Aeronauts and Judy which The People regarded more highly than The Professionals.

FORD V. FERRARI NEW TRAILER


 Over the weekend 20th Century Fox/Disney released a new trailer for James Mangold's Ford v. Ferrari.  Here that is from YouTube:

TORONTO AWARDS JOJO



The Grolsch Audience Award for favorite film at the Toronto International Film Festival went to Taika Waititi's JoJo Rabbit won the prize.  TFF #46 films came close to the win with Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story named as first runner-up and Bong Joon-ho's Parasite named as second runner-up.

Last year Green Book won the TIFF audience award and then went on to win Best Picture on Oscar night.

The Composite Telluride / Continued Oscar Assessments / The Critical Response to Festival Films / Final Trailer for First Man

Hello to all on this September Thursday...


THE COMPOSITE TELLURIDE



Here it is for TFF #45.  The composite mash-up of ratings from both the People and the Professionals.  The Composite Telluride combines the ratings for films that came from both sets of Telluride attendees that I canvas immediately after the fest.

I began doing The Composite in 2013 and in each year the film that has finished at the top has gone on to win the Best Picture Oscar.

Here's a quick look at the top five Composite films for each year since I started:

In 2013 the top five composite films were:

Only 12 films of the 33 featured films had enough responses collectively between the two polls to create the Composite Telluride ratings.  Here's where they landed on the 2018 Composite Telluride ratings (combined ratings in parentheses and the film's positions for both The People's Telluride ratings and The Professionals):

As you can see, the largest disconnect between The Pros and the People was with Ali Abassi's Border with The People rating it at #16 while The pros had it at #8.  Another large disagreement was on Joel Edgerton's Boy Erased with the People ranking it as the #4 film of the fest while The Pros have it at #10.

It will be interesting if Roma or First Man should win Oscar for Best Picture as either film would continue a TFF ratings trend.  A Roma win would continue the streak of Telluride films that have placed at the top of the Composite ratings in each year I've done them.  A First Man win would continue the almost uninterrupted trend of #2 films from The People's Telluride to win Best Picture.  That's been true every year of The People's T-ride save for 2016 when Telluride favorite Barry Jenkin's Moonlight won over Damien Chazelle's La La Land.  Had La La Land won (which most pundits expected) that #2 trend would still be unbroken.

Something's got to give this year.  And, of course, there's always the possibility that The Telluride streak gets busted this year (eight straight BP winners and nine of the last ten played Telluride).  Maybe A Star Is Born wins (many are predicting that to happen) and that ends the streak.

Finally, Roma moves to the #2 spot on the all time Composite list which bumps Laszlo Nemes' Son of Saul to #11.

CONTINUED OSCAR ASSESSMENTS



Various Oscar prognosticators continue to weigh in with their perspectives on the season as Telluride/Venice/Toronto festival gauntlet has come to an end (New York's fest is just underway) and here's a look at the highlights of more of those as MTFB continues to pivot to its secondary mission to follow the awards season fortunes of the films that screened as a part of TFF #45.

Variety's Kristopher Tapley has a Best Picture piece posted.  Tapley names ten films that seem to have the edge for Best Picture at this time.  Included among them are T-ride selections Can You Ever Forgive Me?, The Favourite, First Man and Roma.  Among "Other Films to Consider" Tapley includes The Front Runner and Cold War.

Tapley is on record as having said that he won't get to large scale predictions in multiple categories for Variety until December.

Vanity Fair's Richard Lawson goes with early takes for the six major Oscar categories: Picture, Direction, Actress, Actor and Supporting Actress and Actor.

By category, here's what T-ride films/performances he sees in the race at this point:

Best Picture: Roma, First Man (Lawson becomes the first journalist who echoes my opinion-voiced on the gondola in Telluride-that First Man shares some stylistic attributes with last year's multi-nominated Dunkirk).  Lawson also suggests The Favourite is "still in play" and that the BP fortunes of The Front Runner and Boy Erased "dimmed" in Toronto.

Best Actress: Lawson says Olivia Colman/The Favourite and Melissa McCarthy/Can You Ever Forgive Me? are probable.  He also opines that both Yalitza Aparicio/Roma and Nicole Kidman/Destroyer could make the race as well.

Best Actor: Lawson, like many, think Robert Redford has a real shot at a nomination for The Old Man and the Gun owning in some measure to the fact that Redford has said it's his last acting gig.  Ryan Gosling/First Man is also mentioned and Lawson says we shouldn't count out Hugh Jackman in The Front Runner.

Best Supporting Actress: As many do, Lawson suggests both Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz could earn nominations for The Favourite.  Also on his radar is Claire Foy from First Man.

Best Supporting Actor: Richard E. Grant for Can You Ever Forgive Me? is the TFF most likely Supporting Actor nominee according to Lawson.  He also suggests that Russell Crowe might be possible from Boy Erased.

Best Direction: Lawson suggests that the five directors nominated could include Alfonso Cuaron/Roma, Damien Chazelle/First Man and Yorgos Lanthimos/The Favourite.

The Guardian also put together a post-festival Oscar analysis that isn't as focused as those above.  It does, however, conclude with what it says are Ten Safe Nominee Bets which include TFFers:

THE CRITICAL RESPONSE TO FESTIVAL FILMS

The critical aggregating outfit had an extensive article posted Sunday with a breakdown of films into four categories: Award Winners, Other Highlights, Minor Disappointments and The Duds.  Here's where TFF #45 ended up with their Metacritic composite score:

A NEW ATTRACTION AT MTFB



Over that last year and a half you have probably noticed that I have been periodically posting sections that review past Telluride Film Festivals.  The project started in April 2017 but it was spurred by a chance glance at TFF #43 (2016).

I was walking down Colorado Ave. on the way to a screening at The Zog and noticed an array of past TFF programs at the Telluride Gallery of Fine Art.  Every TFF program from #1 to #43 were in a window display there.  I pulled my camera out and started taking pics.

And I had an idea.  For a long I have had a page called "Selected TFF History" which thumbnails fests from the beginning.  Standing in front of that collection of programs, I thought that if a guy had access to those, he might be able to put together a more substantial historical review of TFF from the beginning and so a mission was born.

That mission has played out since April of 2017 with sporadic (in reverse chronological order) posts for each festival from 2005 back to 1974.  I chose to begin with 2005 because you can find links to every program from 2006 to the present at the official Telluride Film Fest site.

The next part of the mission is completed today as I have collected those posts into two separate pages.  If you'll look at the top of this post you'll see tabs for TFF for 1974-1995 and another for 1996-Present.

I've done my best to chronicle as many of the films that screened each year as well as Tributes, Guest Directors and the famous that were in attendance.  It's not meant to be an exhaustive accounting; simply more detailed than the "Select History".

Future plans include the addition of each new year's rundown and the addition of the years 2005 to the Present as more than the links to those programs at the TFF website.

I hope you find it useful and enjoyable from time to time.



A TFF #45 POSTER APPEARS

I posted it yesterday as a standalone but thought I'd better include it as a part of a regularly scheduled blogpost so here it is...the 2018 Telluride Film Festival poster:



I was alerted to the fact that the poster had appeared on the official Telluride Film Festival website yesterday afternoon via Twitter by MTFB reader J. Scott Pollard.  So this still of it comes directly from there rather than a result of a press release.

Additionally, if you click the link to purchase the poster you'll discover that the artist it Woody Pirtle.  Pirtle is a 74 year old artist who was born in Corsicana, TX according to his bio at his official website Pirtle Design.  The bio goes on to reveal that Pirtle's work has hung in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, The Library of Congress and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London among other institutions.  Pirtle was awarded the AIGA medal in 2003 and the Rome Prize in design in 2015.




THE PROS ARE LINED UP



I am happy to report that a number of industry professionals have agreed again this year to take part in Michael's Telluride Film Blog's critical appraisal of the films that will pay this week at the 45th Telluride Film Festival.

As I have asked that you readers do, I have these kind souls to rate the films that they see on a 1-5 scale.  I'll collate that data and then next week, after the fest is all over, I'll report back the average rating for a bunch of this year's crop.

This year's Pros include writers for Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Indiewire, Awards Daily, Awards Circuit, RogerEbert.com and ScriptMag. com among others.

I'll also include the Professional's data in The Composite Telluride which combines the ratings given by the Pros and The People.  Speaking of which...


THE PEOPLE'S TELLURIDE




For the seventh consecutive year MTFB is soliciting your input for The People's Telluride.  All you have to do is watch films during the fest and then, when it's all over, report to me your assessment of each film on a 1-5 scale with 1 being "UGH!" and 5 being "GREAT".

The Composite Telluride / Goodbye Harry Dean / Toronto's Audience Award / Trailers for Film Stars and Faces Places / Post Fest Overviews

There was some substantial disparity between The People and The Pros this year as no less than half of the films that were rated by enough members of both groups had a rank disparity of five spots or more.  The three most divisive films were The Rider and First Reformed which The Pros favored much more and also Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool which The People preferred considerably more than The Pros.

A couple of other notes...based on what past Telluride ratings have told us it looks to me like The Shape of Water, Lady Bird and Darkest Hour look like solid Best Picture nomination contenders. Battle of the Sexes, as I said in my last post, might be in some serious jeopardy in as far as Best Picture is concerned.  I know some Oscar predictors think it's in good shape but these results suggest that it might be a stretch.

Additionally, the results also look grim for Best Picture chances for Wonderstruck, Downsizing, First They Killed My Father and Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool.

Finally, I have opined that TFF #44 seemed to me to have a bunch of good films but maybe didn't have a great film and , again, the ratings might provide some evidence for that as no film from 2017 cracked the all time (well since 2013) Telluride Composite ratings list.  This year's highest rated composite film, The Shape of Water and its 8.72 rating missed making the top ten by 2/100ths of a point.

GOODBYE HARRY DEAN



Harry Dean Stanton was an "all timer".  A GOAT, if you will.  The long time character actor was in everything and great every time:

***TFF's old timeline that used to be on the official website said that Stanton was present in Telluride that weekend.  The official program from 1984 only lists Wim Wenders as being with the film.  If anyone out there knows for sure one way or the other, drop me a line.

Stanton died on Friday at the age of 91.

Just recently we saw him back in David Lynch and Mark Frost's Twin Peaks: The Return on Showtime resurrecting the character that he had played in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.  It was a reminder of what an authentic and honest presence he was on screen.

Saturday, on Twitter, I suggested that I wanted to get the ball rolling on a Best Actor Oscar movement for Harry Dean's Lucky performance...and why not?

Most of my friends that are Oscarologists have suggested that the Best Actor Oscar field isn't as over- loaded this year and the critical response to Lucky from its festival screenings-beginning with South by Southwest back in March and has included a slew of domestic and international fests including: Nantucket, Indianapolis, Locarno, Melbourne, Helsinki and will soon include The Harry Dean Film fest as well as the BFI London Fest.

Variety's Joe Leydon writes: "Everything in his career, and his life,  has brought Harry Dean Stanton to his moment of triumph."

Indiewire's David Ehrlich said "Harry Dean Stanton gives a performance for the ages."

Brian Tallerico for RogerEbert.com wrote that Stanton is "giving one of the best performances of his remarkable career."

So...readers of MTFB...that's my drumbeat for Oscar for this year.  Harry Dean Stanton for Best Actor (OK, I'm also all about Richard Jenkins for Supporting Actor in The Shape of Water).

TORONTO'S AUDIENCE AWARD



The Toronto International Film Festival named its prize winners yesterday afternoon and it's a rare year in that there was almost no Telluride/Toronto crossover.  Faces Places won the Audience Award for Docs which is the only instance that I could find.  TIFF's feature award went to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, First Runner-up was I, Tonya and Second Runner-up was Call Me By Your Name.

I had thought that either The Shape of Water or Lady Bird would/could take the award.

The win for Three Billboards may underscore how unsettled the awards landscape is even after the Telluride/Venice/Toronto triumvirate.

Her top five include these TFF #44 players:

Best Actress: Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), Emma Stone (Battle of the Sexes) and Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird).  She also suggests that Rosamund Pike might be a possibility for Hostiles.

The Composite Telluride / Where the Oscar Race Seems to Be / Toronto Comes to a Close / The Moonlight Crew Has a New Project

THE COMPOSITE TELLURIDE





For the fourth year in a row, I've combined the ratings from both groups that I survey after the Telluride Film Festival comes to a conclusion.  I don't know that combining the ratings from both The People and The Professionals really provides any further insight into how films were perceived over the Labor Day weekend but it seems interesting to me as one more tool to use to parse what happened over that three and a half days.

So here it is, the 2016 TFF #43 Composite Ratings.  The ratings are a simple addition of the ratings from the two groups.  The position for each film is also listed with its People's rating position first followed by its Professionals rating position.  14 films earned enough responses from both groups to qualify for The Composite Ratings.

3) Manchester by the Sea (8.13) 5-4
4) Arrival (8.01) 6-7
5) Maudie (7.89) 3-9
6) Sully (7.68) 10-6

The People's list included seven films that didn't have enough of The Pros rating them to qualify for The Composite: The Eagle Huntress, Bright Lights, Frantz, Lost in Paris, Chasing Trane, Through the Wall and Graduation.  The Pros only had one film that missed enough votes from The People to get into the Composite and that was Pablo Larrain's Neruda.

The biggest disconnects between the groups were Maudie which The People loved but for which The Pros were less enamored.  Werner Herzog's Into the Inferno was the other film with a disparate reaction but of the opposite nature as The Pros embraced whereas The People were not as enraptured. Una and Sully where also slightly divisive.

In 2013 the top five composite films were:

In 2014 the top five were:

1) Birdman (9.18)

In 2015 the top five were:

1) Spotlight (8.86)
2) Son of Saul (8.74)
3) Beasts of No Nation (8.62)
4) Steve Jobs (8.17)
5) Carol (8.13)

With this year's ratings, I have put together the All Time (well, for the last four years) Top Ten Composite Rated Films from TFF:

WHERE THE OSCAR RACE SEEMS TO BE



With the Toronto International Film Fest closing last night, the triumvirate of September fests (Telluride, Venice, Toronto) that unofficially start The Oscar Season are in the books and the serious Oscar pundits, experts and handicappers have begun the process of assessing the landscape.  We all know that there are more films still to come that could/will factor into the race (Ang Lee's Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk and Martin Scorsese's Silence jump to mind immediately.  Robert Zemeckis' Allied and Warren Beatty's Rules Don't Apply also).

So MTFB begins to turn the page and emphasize The Film Awards Clearinghouse (FAC) portion of this space's too long name.  The FAC will appear for the first time for the 2016 season on Thursday with my look at four major categories: Picture, Director, Actress and Actor.

Meanwhile, let's see where the experts are saying the race is and how TFF #43 films fit into that as we move past Telluride, Venice and Toronto into the fall...

TORONTO COMES TO A CLOSE



It didn't come as a surprise to me as Damien Chazelle's La La Land won The People's Choice/Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival yesterday.  If you read my post from Sept. 9th, you know that I wrote that I "wouldn't be surprised" were this to happen.

Also, Owen Glieberman and Peter DeBrudge at Variety named their Ten Best films of Toronto and they included films that played previously at TFF #43.  They were: Arrival, La La Land, Moonlight and Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer.

THE MOONLIGHT CREW HAS A NEW PROJECT



In an absolute expression of "striking while the iron is hot" various outlets reported over the weekend that the group behind Barry Jenkins' Moonlight has acquired the rights to develop Colson Whitehead's recently released novel The Underground Railroad as a limited series.

No news was included concerning a time frame or an outlet for the series so we'll be looking forward to hearing about those items in the future.
