COW TRAILER

The header for this story is funny..."Cow Trailer".  Hahahahaha.  now then, Andrea Arnold's Cow has a trailer and here it is:

FILM INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS

The Film Independent Spirit Awards were handed out on Sunday.  Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Lost Daughter had an exceptional evening winning Best Feature, Director and Screenplay.  TFF #48 selection Red Rocket was also recognized for Best Actor with Simon Rex winning that award.  The complete listing of all Spirit Awards winners is linked here from The Hollywood Reporter.

GUILD AWARDS: ART DIRECTORS, ACE: EDDIES

The Art Directors Guild named their winners for 2021 films this past weekend.  No TFF #48 films made their lists.  Film winners were Nightmare Alley, No Time to Die, Dune and Encanto.

The American Cinema Editors (ACE) named TFF #48 film King Richard edited by Pamela Martin as the Best edited dramatic feature film of 2021.  Other winners included: tick, tcik...BOOM, Summer of Soul and Encanto.

MORE CANNES SPEC

What will be the 5-8 films that will debut at Cannes and then make their first  North American appearance at TFF #49?  Obviously we won't know until Thursday, Sept. 1st but that can't stop us from thinking and predicting and hoping.  Variety's Elsa Keslassy was up last Thursday with a Cannes speculation/prediction piece and so let's parse that for titles that might be candidates for The SHOW.

James Gray's Armageddon Time/Focus Features
Florian Zeller's The Son/SPC
George Miller's Three Thousand Years of Longing UA/MGM
David Cronenberg's Crimes of the Future/NEON
Kelly Reichardt's Showing Up/A24
The Dardennes Brothers' Tori and Lokita/TBD
Hirokazu Kore-eda's Baby, Box, Broker/TBD
Ali Abassi's Hamlet/TBD

Meanwhile, Wes Anderson's latest, Asteroid City, is reportedly foregoing Cannes for Venice.  After last year's TFF "Sneak" of The French Dispatch, perhaps Anderson books a second straight film at TFF and they make the Venice to Colorado trek that has become very popular over the past several years.  Last year The Power of the Dog, The Lost Daughter, Spencer and The Card Counter and other films made that journey.

Catching Up / Indiewire's 25 Most Anticipated /PGA Awards 1917 / SAG Award Winners Announced Last Night / ACE Award Surprise-Parasite

CATCHING UP

In the blur that has been the last couple of weeks of Oscar nomination announcement buildup and then the subsequent parsing...some notes and stories that I would have normally included in this space got left behind...so...time to catch up:

Mark Cousins article about the death of the late great Buck Henry is here from Indiewire.

Kris Tapley talks with The Two Popes Oscar nominated scribe Anthony McCarten on The Call Sheet Podcast.

Indiewire reports HBO and Bong Joon-ho are developing Parasite as a project for the premium channel.

The Film Stage on Pedro Almodovar's Pain and Glory.

Damien Chazelle's new Netflix joint will be featured at the Berlin Film Festival.

INDIEWIRE'S 25 MOST ANTICIPATED

Indiewire writers Eric Kohn, David Ehrlich and Kate Erbland published their collective list of 25 films that they have high hopes for on Jan. 11th.  I took a look at their list to continue to try to get an early bead on what might be in the TFF #47 conversation as we move toward spring, Cannes and ultimately the summer season when Telluride Film Fest energy grows and grows.

Consequently, here are the films from their list that seem TFF-y or that are just on my own personal wish list (presented alphabetical as is done in the original post):

Ana de Armas who will star in Blonde (photo via Indiewire)

BLONDE- Andrew Dominik's thinly veiled examination of a Marilyn Monroe-like character played by the currently red hot Ana De Armas (Knives Out).  From Netflix.  Release date: TBD.

DUNE- From director Denis Villenueve.  Villenueve tackles the Frank Herbert sci-fi classic and will certainly have a different approach than we can find in David Lynch's 1984 version.  Villenueve's fairly consistent presence at Telluride makes this a possibility ...or maybe more a wish on my behalf.  From Warner Bros.Release-Dec. 18th.

THE FRENCH DISPATCH- Wes Anderson is back.  A film reportedly about journalism and journalists with Anderson's usual array of regular stars (Willem Dafoe, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Saoirse Ronan) and a batch of new talent (Timothee Chalamet, Elizabeth Moss).  I expect that some version of the film will bow at Cannes, which as TFF followers know, doesn't preclude at Telluride play.  From Searchlight.  Release: TBD.

I'M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS- Directed by Charlie Kaufman.  Could Kaufman return to Telluride after screening Anomalisa there in 2015?  Could be.  Jesse Plemons and Jesse Buckley star.  From Netflix.  Release: TBD.

MANK- Director David Fincher's first feature film gig since 2014's Gone Girl finds him directing a script written by his father about the genesis of the film classic Citizen Kane.  Gary Oldman stars as Herman Mankiewicz, the screen writer of the film many regard still as the greatest film ever made.  At this point, it's the film I most ardently hope makes it to Southwest Colorado over Labor Day weekend.  From Netflix.  Release TBD.

Chloe Zhao (photo via Indiewire)

NOMADLAND- Chloe Zhao's follow up to The Rider.  I had this on my 2019 watch lists and that, obviously didn't happen.  Now I'm expecting a Cannes debut and a possible awards friendly release date.  Frances McDormand stars.  From Searchlight.  Release TBD.

ON THE ROCKS- Sofia Coppola re-teams with her Lost in Translation star Bill Murray.  Rashida Jones is cast as well in this father/daughter film.  Coppola screened Lost in Translation at TFF in 2003.  Could this mark a return for her?  From Apple.  Release TBD.

Check out the rest of the Indiewire 25 here.

PGA AWARDS 1917

The Producers Guild of America announced their winners for films and television for 2019 on Saturday night.

Sam Mendes 1917 took the film top prize which might mean that the World War I set film that is shot to appear to be essentially one take is your front runner for the Best Picture Oscar.  Indiewire reports that the PGA winner is a 72% successful indicator of the eventual BP Oscar winner.

1917 beat out three TFF films that were also in the running: Parasite, Marriage Story and Ford v Ferrari.

Toy Story 4 was named the PGA winner for Animated Feature while the producers named Apollo 11 the Best Documentary of the year.

The complete PGA story is linked here.

SAG AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED LAST NIGHT

Telluride 2019 had a good night at the SAG Awards last night with TFF #46 film actors scooping up two prizes and a TFF film also won Best Ensemble.  Here's the rundown of winners for film:

Best Supporting Actress: Laura Dern/Marriage Story
Best Supporting Actor: Brad Pitt/Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood
Best ACtress: Renee Zellweger/Judy
Best Actor: Joaquin Phoenix/Joker
Best Ensemble: Parasite

The Parasite win was something of a surprise and positions it along with PGA winner 1917 as the two most likely front runners at this point for the Best Picture Oscar.  Though, I wouldn't rule out Once Upon a Time...just yet.

Now we wait to see what the DGA and WGA do.

ACE AWARD SURPRISE-PARASITE

The American Cinema Editors group surprised the film world on Friday awarding Bong Joon-ho's Parasite as the best edited film drama of the year.  Parasite beat Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood, Ford v Ferrari, Marriage Story and Joker.

Jojo Rabbit won the Eddy for Film-Comedy.  Toy Story 4 won for Animated Feature and Apollo 11 won for editing for a Feature Documentary.

The complete list of nominees and winners is linked here from Awards Watch.

Producers Salute La La Land / Editors Endorse La La Land and Arrival / Hidden Figures Wins SAG Ensemble / Oscar Related

Welcome to Monday as January is on the brink of limping to a conclusion...

Mary Tyler Moore and John Hurt.  Two very different actors and great in different ways but still great nonetheless.  For fun, imagine a two headed coin with MTM's Mary Richards on one side and John Hurt's Winston Smith from 1984 on the other.  Quite a heads and tails, eh?

PRODUCERS SALUTE LA LA LAND

The Producers Guild of America awarded La La Land its top prize for a feature film on Saturday night.  The PGA Award is considered a good barometer of the Best Picture race as it matches up slight better than 2/3 of the time.  The PGA also uses the same preferential balloting process as The Academy which adds another layer of insight.  Other TFF #43 films that were among The PGA nominees: Manchester by the Sea, Moonlight and Arrival.

Here is substantial coverage of the PGA awards presentation including some analysis concerning the Oscar implications of La La Land's win:

Kristopher Tapley/Variety-In Contention

Dave McNary/Variety

Scott Feinberg/The Hollywood Reporter

Anne Thompson/Indiewire

Gregory Ellwood/The Playlist

EDITORS ENDORSE LA LA LAND AND ARRIVAL

The American Cinema of Editors handed their highest honors for film editing to Damien Chazelle's La La Land as a comedy edited by Tom Cross while Denis Villeneuve's Arrival was named the best edited drama edited by Joe Walker.

OJ: Made in America was named best edited documentary and Zootopia was named the best edited animated feature.

Reportage is here:

Kristopher Tapley/Variety-In Contention

Bill Desowitz/Indiewire

HIDDEN FIGURES WINS SCREEN ACTORS ENSEMBLE

A couple of late show surprises will serve to keep two Oscar races interesting.  Denzel Washington won the SAG Award for Best Actor last night for his role in Fences and Hidden Figures was the surprise winner in the Best Ensemble category.

Washington's win upset Casey Affleck who has been considered the favorite through a good deal of this Oscar season for his performance in Manchester by the Sea.

The Hidden Figures win wasn't a total shocker but both Moonlight and Fences had been considered the more likely winner in that category.

The rest of the film acting categories went as expected with TFF #43 attendees winning in two categories-Best Actress and Supporting Actor.  The list:

Supporting Actress: Viola Davis/Fences
Supporting Actor: Mahershala Ali/Moonlight
Lead Actress: Emma Stone/La La Land
Lead Actor: Denzel Washington/Fences
Best Ensemble: Hidden Figures
The Best Stunt Ensemble for Film: Hacksaw Ridge

OSCAR RELATED

The trailer for the 89th Academy awards is out and our friend Alex Billington's FirstShowing.net has it.  Check the trailer and Alex's story here.

Meanwhile, Variety-In Contention's Kristopher Tapley analyzes the Oscar race now that we know the nominees and assesses whether Damien Chazelle's La La Land has a shot at the all time record for wins after tying the all time record for nominations.  Take a look at his analysis here.

Entertainment Weekly's Devan Coggan takes a deep dive in the numbers of Oscar #89 here.

Key dates remaining:

Feb. 4th- Directors Guild Award
Feb. 12th- BAFTA Awards
Feb. 13th- Oscar final voting begins
Feb. 21st- Oscar voting concludes
Feb. 26th- Oscars Awards ceremony

That will do it for this Monday.  I'll have another post up on Thursday, so come on back for that.

Guilds Begin to Weigh In / Telluride Films Dominate Online Film Critics Awards / New Trailer for La La Land / HBO Drops Trailer for Bright Lights / Hollywood Elsewhere Looks at 2017

GUILDS BEGIN TO WEIGH IN

We are in the awards transition period.  The critics have largely weighed in, Oscar nomination ballots are going out to the AMPAS membership (voting starts today) and the Golden Globes are being handed out on Sunday.  It's time for the Guilds to make their mark.  The Film Editors teed off this week with their Tuesday announcement of nominees.  The Writer's Guild named their nominees yesterday and the Art Directors Guild announces today. The actors had already spoken with their SAG Award nominees announced on Dec. 14.

Coming up quickly are nominees from the Producers Guild on Jan. 10th and the Directors Guild two days later.

Here's what we learned this week.  Among "Eddie" editing nominations were a good number of TFF #43 films.  Drama nominees included: Arrival, Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight.  La La Land was included among the nominees in the comedy feature category.

Complete coverage of all categories and nominees is here from The Hollywood Reporter and here from Indiewire.

The Writers Guild nominated four TFF #43 films for theur screenplays.  Moonlight, La La Land and Manchester by the Sea were nominated in the Best Original Screenplay category and Arrival was nominated as the Best Adapted Screenplay.  It should be noted that Moonlight has been deemed an adapted screenplay for Oscar consideration.

Here's complete coverage of the WGA nominees from yesterday from the Writers Guild itself as well as from Indiewire.

TELLURIDE FILMS DOMINATE ONLINE FILM CRITICS AWARDS

The Online Film Critics Society went for Telluride 2016 films in a big way as they announced their awards on Tuesday.  TFF #43 films won a total of eight of the OFCS awards.

Barry Jenkins Moonlight was the big winner with the OFCS awarding it four prizes: Best Picture, Direction and Supporting wins for Maharshala Ali and Naomie Harris.

La La Land picked up two wins for film editing and cinematography.

Manchester by the Sea's Casey Aflleck was named Best Actor and Eric Heisserer won for Best Adapted Screenplay for Arrival.

Here's the comprehensive rundown of winners from the OFCS press release.

NEW TRAILER FOR LA LA LAND

Lionsgate tweeted out a new trailer for Damien Chazelle's La La Land on Tuesday as the film continues to do well in limited release and also expands into more and more theaters.  This trailer uses the John Legend song Start a Fire as the aural backdrop for scenes from the film.

Take a look at it here from YouTube:

HBO DROPS BRIGHT LIGHTS TRAILER

In light of its decision to push the premiere of the documentary Bright Lights: Starring Debboe Reynolds and Carrie Fisher up to Jan. 7th, it shouldn't be a surprise that HBO released a trailer for the doc yesterday.  Here it is from YouTube:

Coverage of the trailer and the doc's premiere is here from:

HOLLYWOOD ELSEWHERE LOOKS AT 2017

Jeffrey Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere has posted an evolving listing of films (80 at the time of this post) of films suspected or confirmed for 2017 release that he calls "high end releases".  From that list I have culled ten that have a reasonable chance of playing Telluride plus an additional ten that I would personally put on my Telluride 2017 wish list.

On the "could play" list:

The Sisters Brother/Jacques Audiard
Mektoub is Meltoub/Abdellatif Kechiche
Tully/Jason Reitman
Untitled Andrey Zvyaginstev Film
The Current War/Alfonso Gomez-Rejon

The FAC: Big 8 Categories SIX DAYS OUT/Final Precurors; Writing and Editing/Oscar Matters

Good Monday morning!

THE FAC: BIG EIGHT CATEGORIES

Only six days left until Oscar season is over and if you're an observer who doesn't have a horse in the race, it has been a fascinating ride these past 5 1/2 months since the Telluride Film Festival's 39th edition came to an end.

Now we're to the end game.  Consequently, MTFB/FAC will post every day this week and include a final look at Oscar predictions next Sunday morning before the Oscar broadcast.  It's going to be a bumpy week.

Here's a start, a look at the Big 8 categories and where they stand after the number crunching using data from the published predictions of the following:

Sasha Stone/Awards Daily
Scott Feinberg/The Feinberg Forecast-The Hollywood Reporter
Kristopher Tapley/InContention-HitFix
Anne Thompson/Thompson on Hollywood-IndieWire
Peter Knegt/IndieWire
Brad Brevet/Rope of Silicon
Clayton Davis/Awards Circuit
Alex Carlson/Film Misery

Telluride #39 films are indicated in Bold.

     +BEST PICTURE

1) Argo (1)
2) Lincoln (2)
3) Silver Linings Playbook (3)
4) Life of Pi (4)
5) Amour (6)
6) Zero Dark Thirty (7)
7) Les Miserables (5)
8) Beasts of the Southern Wild (8)
9) Django Unchained (9)

Comment:  The "Argo" trend is all but complete sweeping the predictors.  Looks like its Ben's to lose at this point.  And here's kind of an amazing note..."Amour" has steadily moved up the chart in the estimation of the prognosticators I check on to sit at #5.  Almost in a position for a case to be made that IT could be a spoiler although better cases can be made for "Lincoln", "Silver Linings" and "Life of Pi".

     +BEST DIRECTION

1) Steven Spielberg/Lincoln(1)
2) Ang Lee/Life of Pi (2)
3) David O. Russell/Silver Linings (3)
4) Michael Haneke/Amour (4)
5) Behn Zeitlin/Beasts (5)

Comment:  This thing has become a real horse race.  Spielberg maintains a small edge over Lee, but it's very small.  Also, Russell is in striking distance.

     +BEST ACTOR

1) Daniel Day Lewis/Lincoln (1)
2) Hugh Jackman/Les Miserables (2)
3) Bradley Cooper/Silver Linings Playbook (3)
4) Denzel Washington/Flight (4)
5) Joaquin Phoenix/The Master (5)

Comment:  If anyone else but Day Lewis wins this it will be one of the biggest "shocker" moments in Oscar history.

     +BEST ACTRESS

1) Jennifer Lawrence/Silver Linings Playbook (1)
2) Emanuelle Riva/Amour (2)
3) Jessica Chastain/Zero Dark Thirty (3)
4) Quvenzhane Wallis/Beasts (5)
5) Naomi Watts/The Impossible (4)

Comment:  Lawrence has been the front runner for months.  She was seriously challenged by Jessica Chastain but that dynamic has faded.   Rather, Emanuelle Riva's stock has continued to rise over the last month and now she is a very close second and the trendy pick to win (she's the first choice of 3 of my Oscar specialists).  This category has become very tight.

     +BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

1) Tommy Lee Jones/Lincoln (1)
2) Robert DeNiro/Silver Linings Playbook (3)
3) Philip Seymour Hoffman/The Master (2)
4) Christoph Waltz/Django Unchained (4)
5) Alan Arkin/Argo (5)

Comment:  This has also turned into a real dog fight.  Jones seemed to be unbeatable 6 weeks ago, but the race has evolved to the point that any of the top 4 men could win the honor and, frankly, I wouldn't be all that shocked if Arkin sneaked in to win on the strength of the "Argo" wave.

     +BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

1)Anne Hathaway/Les Miserables (1)
2) Sally Field/Lincoln (2)
3) Helen Hunt/The Sessions (3)
4) Amy Adams/The Master (4)
5) Jacki Weaver/Silver Linings Playbook (5)

Comment:  If Hathaway doesn't win, it will also be one of the biggest Oscar "shockers' in a good long time.

     +BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

1) Chris Terrio/Argo (3)
2) Tony Kushner/Lincoln (1)
3) David O. Russell/Silver Linings Playbook (2)
4) David Magee/Life of Pi (4)
5) Lucy Alibar and Behn Zeitlin/Beasts (5)

Comment:  The "Argo" momentum has carried Terrio to the top of the chart with a fractional lead over Kushner (who has lead this category for months).  Keep in mind, I crunched the numbers for this morning's chart prior to Terrio winning the Writer's Guild award last night (see below).  It's a two horse race with Terrio the smallest of favorites now.

     +BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

1) Michael Haneke/Amour (3)
2) Quentin Tarantino/Django Unchained (1)
3) Mark Boal/Zero Dark Thirty (2)
4) Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola/Moonrise Kingdom (4)
5) John Gatins/Flight (5)

Comment: Mark Boal (ZDT) won last night at the WGA but Haneke wasn't eligible for that nomination (neither was Tarantino).  So, this is a three horse race and pretty close as well.

So where does this put us with 6 days to Oscar?  "Argo" has won major awards from the following: PGA, DGA, WGA, SAG, ACE the Critic's Choice and Golden Globes.  It's going to win Best Picture on Sunday night and likely Best Editing.  It has a decent shot at Best Adapted Screenplay and I think still could get Best Original Score.  All told 3 or 4 Oscars.  The biggest total of wins on Sunday night may be "Life of Pi" which could end up winning 5-6 Oscars. There's a very real chance that "Lincoln" may go home without a single Oscar despite having the most nominations (12).

Ultimately, this is primarily a blog that focuses on Telluride films and as of this post, TFF #39 looks formidable.  Despite a year with a relatively modest nomination total, The SHOW could end up with as many as 9 Oscars at the end of the night awarded to films that played this year (Think: "Argo" 4-Picture, Adapted Script, Score and Editing, "Amour" 3-Foreign Language, Original Screenplay and Actress and wins for "Paperman" and "Asad" in the shorts categories).

FINAL PRECURSORS: WRITERS AND EDITORS

The Writer's Guild of America awarded their top prizes for the year last night and as mentioned above TFF #39 Sneak Preview "Argo" was awarded for Best Adapted Screenplay.  "Zero Dark Thirty" won for Original Screenplay.  Hers' the report filed by USA Today:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/movies/2013/02/18/writers-guild-awards/1927303/

And on Saturday the American Cinema Editors awarded top honors to "Argo" "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Brave".  Here's the story from The Playbook.
