NEW VIEWS: AMOUR

One of the two films I am personally most excited about that played Cannes last month and almost certainly will play Telluride is Michale Haneke's "Amour" (the other is "Rust and Bone"). Haneke's other Palme D'Or winner "The White Ribbon" may have been the best film of 2009. I have included the link to Rope of Silicon's post of two clips from the film here:

12 YEARS A SLAVE...NEXT YEAR

News that director Steve McQueen is still casting "12 Years a Slave" from The Playlist:

The word is that filming is expected to start this month.

Now that may be a little confusing to readers of this blog who may have noticed numerous references to "12 Years" in Monday's post about Gold Derby's 2012 Oscar contenders.

Unless I'm wildly off, it won't be ready until way later than that. My guess is that McQueen is looking to Cannes next summer and that we could (and probably will) see it in Telluride for TFF #40 (2013).

ODDS AND ENDS



Paul McCartney confirmed yesterday that he will be part of the Olympics opening ceremony directed by Telluride favorite (and perpetually nice guy there) Danny Boyle. At one point the rumor was that Sir Paul would re-unite with Ringo and that George and John's sons would also appear in what would be the closest approximation of The Beatles.

I, personally, want even more...let's re-unite Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and The Stones also as a part of the ceremony!

DJANGO!

If you don't obsessively watch the interweb for this kind of stuff and you didn't see Entertainment Tonight last night, then you missed the release of the first full-fledged trailer for Quentin Tarantino's much anticipated "Django Unchained".

The release came complete with controversy over an early sneak or two online in violation of an embargo from The Weinstein Company. The embargo was in place, almost certainly, to allow ET to have it "exclusively" for their syndicated show.

So, this morning, in order to not allow everyone the opportunity to see it (and it is kind of fun...in a Tarantino-y way), I have provided multiple links to various websites for the video:

COSMO NO

David Cronenberg's Cannes competition piece "Cosmopolis" is off the table as a Telluride possibility. It was announced yesterday that the film will have an August 17 release here in the U.S. thus insuring a no show for T-ride.

"Cosmopolis" received mixed reviews at Cannes.

I had always thought that its Telluride prospects were dicey at best. Then with the critical reaction from Cannes being what it was, I was even less convinced that we'd see it in the mountains.

You have to wonder if there was a lack of interest from the fall festivals (T-ride, Venice and New York particularly...it is scheduled to open in Canada today, which would also preclude a Toronto run) and if that might not have been a part of the decision process.

Additionally, Aug. 17 doesn't exactly scream awards positioning.

Earlier this week I nudged the Telluride programmers to think about including Sundance and Cannes hit "Beasts of the Southern Wild"...silly me.  "Beasts opens on June 27th...nevermind.

Cosmo No/Anna Pix/Coming Attractions

David Cronenberg's Cannes competition piece "Cosmopolis" is off the table as a Telluride possibility.  It was announced yesterday that the film will have an August 17 release here in the U.S. thus insuring a no show for T-ride.

ANNA KARENINA

Joe Wright's "Anna Karenina" had some stills up yesterday on the Playlist and Awards Daily this morning.  "Anna" doesn't have a large Telluride profile, but it's not completely outside the realm of possibility.

It's Nov. 9 scheduled release date means some awards positioning is occurring and production/distribution outfits Focus Features,  Studio Canal and Working Title have had some, albeit slight, presences at Telluride in the last 5-6 years with "Brokeback Mountain", "Babel", "Into the Wild" and "Catch a Fire".

So put "Anna" down as a bout a 10% chance.

COMING ATTRACTIONS

Periodically, as this summer unfolds, I'm going to try to highlight a future film that may be in Telluride's sights for 2013 or beyond and provide some links to stories that have already appeared about them.

Starting with Jason Reitman's "Labor Day".  It stars Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet and is expected to be a 2013 release.  You have to think it will also be an awards stalker next year.

Also, since Reitman skipped Telluride this past year with "Young Adult", I'd be willing to bet serious money he returns to Colorado if it's at all possible with this new film.  Reitman has been very successful with previous Telluride bows for "Juno" and "Up in the Air".  And, come on, the film is titled "Labor Day".  How can it NOT play Labor Day weekend in Telluride?

On a purely personal level, I'd like to see him return to Telluride because I've had a couple of very nice, although short, conversations with him including a moment in 2007 when he introduces me to Diablo Cody.

Come back, Jason! And bring Josh and Kate with you!

HEADING WEST

The CEO and I will be heading to California at the end of July and first of August.  Going to visit family, look at stuff, will probably haul finished screenplays along and throw them at people...see if anyone takes a look.

EARLY INVITATION

Tentative plans are already in place to repeat last year's MTFB soiree: "The Guide to the Ride/The Flow of The SHOW".  Specifics are not definitive other than we're planning to do it again at the River Club and it will likely be late Friday afternoon.

We're aiming to provide some refreshment and a nosh and, with any luck, a special guest or two.

It was the highlight of the festival for me last year to get to meet actual living, breathing readers.  I hope everyone who came last year will return and that we get some new faces there as well.

Cannes Concludes: The Winners, The Critics, The Meaning and The Reviews

Both Ioncinema and Screen Daily spent a good deal of time compiling the collective critical response to the 22 films that were in competition in Cannes. The top 6 from the Ioncinema group:

So what does all this mean for Telluride in 3 months?



Bank on seeing “Amour” and “Beyond the Hills”.



If “Rust and Bone” had won any prize at all, I’d also include it on the “bank on it” list…though I still think it’s highly likely.



“Reality”, which had lost some Telluride steam because of fairly weak critical reception over the last week…actually ended the festival back in the possible/probable category because of its Grand Prix win.



Two other T-ride probables that I think suffered some this past fortnight: “Cosmopolis” and “On the Road”.



Getting a boost for Telluride consideration among the competition films: “Mud”, “Holy Motors”, “The Hunt” “The Angel’s Share” and “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet”.



The two out of competition films that caught my eye with some (a lot of) Telluride potential were “The Sapphires” and “No”.



I’m still unconvinced that Carlos Reygadas “Post Tenebras Lux” will end up in Telluride despite its win for Direction.



Now, I spend the next 3 months ferreting out which of these actually is going to end up in Telluride on Labor Day and the other films that will join them.

The 65th Cannes Film Festival is now just days away from bowing and I expect it to be a full fledged audition for 6-10 films that will eventually end up in the Telluride fest on Labor Day weekend.  As you might expect, with the opening fast approaching the pace of the P.R. for the Cannes films has picked up.  That's what we take advantage of in today's post...

Cannes-Other Thoughts/Usual Suspects/MCN Overview

CANNES-OTHER THOUGHTS

The 65th Cannes Film Festival launches in two weeks and admittedly I have been focused on a half dozen films that are in the lineup that I believe have the greatest chance (at least at this point) of being in Telluride over the Labor Day weekend.  That's not to say that there aren't other TFF #39 possibilities in the Cannes mix.  Today, I'll take a look at some that also could make their way across the Atlantic to the San Juans.

LOW LIFE (OR THE UNTITLED JAMES GRAY PROJECT)

This film stars Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Renner and Joaquin Phoenix and although Gray has never made the trip to Telluride has always seemed like a film maker who could.

Cannes Lineup in the Can (Mostly)/Another Notch for Amour/More Posters for the Road/The Paperboy/Old Hands on the Croisette

CANNES IN THE CAN (MOSTLY)

The announcement of the lineup for the 65th Cannes Film Festival came early Thursday morning as promised and included a number of films that we had been anticipating, including a good number that have a reasonably good Telluride pedigree. 

Again, the most likely films from the Cannes list for TFF #39 at least at this point seem to be:

Amour
Rust and Bone
Reality
Beyond the Hills
On the Road
Cosmopolis

Of course, almost anything that plays Cannes has some potential to play at T-ride as long as it hasn't had its North American premiere prior to Labor Day. 

I'll be interested to see how the above list changes depending on the reaction the films receive as they play out next month in France and which films that aren't currently on my Telluride watch list emerge as a result of their reception.

One other note, the Cannes Fest is likely to add a few more films to their selection in the run-up to the Fest...most likely in the Un Certain Regard section.  So stay tuned.

I have had this Michael Haneke project on my Telluride radar for more than a year.  Haneke has had a presence in Telluride's festival before and that was enough for me to believe that it could easily be a part of TFF #39.  Within the last week that conviction has grown stronger with the announcement of its inclusion in the competition at Cannes and just as telling the pre-Cannes announcement that the film had been picked up by Sony Pictures Classics.  I'm telling you that unless it's just not very good (poorly received critically in Cannes) it will be on the program in Telluride come Labor Day.  The Ioncinema post linked below says to flat out expect it.

THE PAPERBOY

Publicity stills are out for the Lee Daniels follow up to his very successful Sundance film Precious (did I mention Oscar winning?).  Daniels film is in competition at Cannes.  I don't have a real sense that it has a high likelihood of making the program for Telluride...but you never know.  Take a look at Nicole Kidman, Matthew McConaughey and Zac Efron via The Playlist.
