We'll " See the Light" in November/Kurzel Talks the "Scottish" Film/Malick Moves to 2016

Good Morning World...Welcome to Tuesday...

WE'LL "SEE THE LIGHT" IN NOVEMBER

Sony Pictures Classics has announced that its Hank Williams biopic starring Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen will be released on Nov. 27th smack in the middle of awards season.  The conventional wisdom is that SPC will push for Hiddleston for Best Actor at a minimum.  The film could also make a play in a number of other categories.

"I Saw the Light" was at #5 on last week's first "Ten Bets" list.  The selection of a late November release date doesn't harm its Telluride chances in the least and actually stokes the T-rode flames just a little bit.

Here's coverage of the SPC announcement:

"I Saw the Light" was directed by Marc Abraham ("Flash of Genius" TFF 2008).  Here's the film's IMDb page:

KURZEL TALKS THE "SCOTTISH" FILM

"Macbeth" teaser via YouTube

Writer/director Justin Kurzel spoke recently to the British version of Yahoo Television about his upcoming "Macbeth" starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard.  The film is being distributed by The Weinstein Company and played the Cannes Film Festival.  It is not yet scheduled for a U.S. release but is set for an October 2nd  release in the U.K.

"Macbeth" was listed on last week's "Ten Best" as being "on the outside" but close.

MALICK MOVES TO 2016

"Knight of Cup's" trailer via YouTube

Speaking of release dates and their effect on their Telluride potential...

The already tenuous possibility that we could see Terrence Malick's latest "Knight of Cups" took a hit with the announcement over the weekend that the film will not be released until 2016.

The Playlist and Thompson on Hollywood provide the details:

Knight of Cups/New from Michel Gondry: "Microbe and Gasoline/Predicting Venice

VIEWS FROM "KNIGHT OF CUPS"

Terrence Malick remains the auteuriest of auteurs.  His next feature: "Knight of Cups" has been gestating for a good long while and from reports seems to be ready to launch.  Malick has never played Telluride, though you'd think that his best stuff would do very well there.  And a reminder, purportedly "Tree of Life" was screened in Telluride in 2011 for Fox Searchlight which led to them acquiring and distributing the film.

To the end that "Knight" could make the T-ride 2015 lineup, here's this note that a bunch of new stills can be found in this post from The Playlist:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/christian-bale-natalie-portman-and-cate-blanchett-brood-in-new-images-from-terrence-malicks-knight-of-cups-20150614

NEW FROM MICHEL GONDRY: "MICROBE AND GASOLINE"

Michel Gondry's latest film "Microbe and Gasoline" dropped an International trailer yesterday (it's in French) and that's what you can view here:

"Microbe and Gasoline" trailer via YouTube

The film currently lacks distribution but Gondry was feted by Telluride in 2004, not as a tribute recipient, however.  Nevertheless, Gondry's latest has to be at least a consideration for T-ride inclusion.

PREDICTING VENICE

Nicholas Bell writing for Ioncinema posted a set of predictions for possible selections for the Venice Film Fest.  Regular readers of MTFB know that, on average, Venice and Telluride will share about three titles (last year it was five: "Birdman", "Ida", "The Look of Silence" "99 Homes" and "The Price of Fame").

If Bell's prognostications are close, one wonders, what might double as a Venice/Telluride play?Among the films he lists as possible Venice fare, the films that seem most likely to make the quick turnaround to Telluride are:

Jeff Nichols' "Midnight Special"
Todd Solondz's "Wiener Dog"
Werner Herzog's "Salt and Fire"
Frederick Wiseman's "In Jackson Heights"
Luca Guadaginino's " A Bigger Splash"

There's more.  Take a look at the following link from Ioncinema:

Searching for the Fox in 2014/Malick's Knight has a Date?/Meyer's New Gig

Welcome back from the weekend to a Monday in July...

SEARCHING FOR THE FOX IN 2014

I am continuing my series of looking at distributors and their connection to Telluride over the past few years as a way of examining the potential film choices for TFF #41,  Today it's Fox Searchlight.  Here's what we have seen from them art Telluride over the past decade:

2004: Kinsey
2005: Bee Season
2006: The Last King of Scotland, The Namesake
2007: Juno, The Savages
2008: Slumdog Millionaire
2009: ZIP
2010: Never Let Me Go, 127 Hours, Black Swan, Millions
2011: Shame, The Descendants
2012: ZIP
2013: 12 Years a Slave

14 films in ten years.  The highwater mark coming in 2010 with 4 films on the SHOW list but  '09 and '12 with no films at all.  But when Fox Search plays, they usually light it up including two Best Picture winners that they had play T-ride including last year's "12 Years a Slave".  Looking at their current lineup of films purportedly ready as per IMDb.com you'll find that they have three films that could show at the SHOW:

Inarritu's "Birdman", Vallee's "Wild" and Vinterberg's "Far from the Madding Crowd"...though it is still unlikely to be ready in time for Labor Day weekend.  Meanwhile, if you read this space with much regularity, you know that I think the "Birdman" is very, very likely to make a Telluride play.  That leaves "Wild" as a question mark.  Currently, I'm not feeling it as a Telluride play (although star Reese Witherspoon won her Oscar for "Walk the Line" which played T-ride in 2005.

So, bottom line:  Fox Searchlight plays "Birdman" as its solo entry for TFF #41.

MALICK'S KNIGHT MIGHT HAVE A DATE

Malcik and Christian Bale on the set of "Knight of Cups" via thefocuspull.com

Does Terrence Malick's "Knight of Cups" have a U.S. release date?  Well, there's buzz that it could be but it's not exactly from publicists.  thefilmstage.com reports that the film could get released in the U.S. in October.  The story also suggests that Venice or Toronto might be the fest for the film.  Venice seems right to me.  Remember, though. that "Tree of Life" made a small appearance to select distributors at Telluride back in 2011.

Check thefilmstage.com story here:

MEYER'S NEW GIG

Gary Meyer photo via Eat, Drink, Film

A couple of weeks back, I reported that Gary Meyer's responsibilities ofr the Telluride Film festival had changed from that of co-director to what is described as Senior Curator.  Meyer was said to be moving to put more focus on his Eat, Drink, Film website.  We've seen that happen now as Meyer has a big post up over the weekend about Roger Ebert.  Take a look at that here:

Not So Smart/View of Hyde Park/Depp and Anderson/Knight Without Damsel

Good Tuesday to All!

NOT SO SMART

So, yesterday, I was doing my research thing; trying to suss put clues here and there to what might be playing at this year's fest.  I stumbled over a reference online and dug into it.  At one point I was about 90% certain that I had a backdoor confirmation that a film that I have mentioned and that has been on the Ten Bets list was a go for TFF.  Very exciting...and I'm thinking I'm a film research genius.  Then I get a response to a feeler I had sent to a source....mmm...nope...no confirmation.  Actually, more confusion...

So..."not so smart"...but I'll keep trying!

VIEW OF HYDE PARK

The Playlist has a post up this morning that shows us posters for John Hillcoat's "Lawless" which we won't see in Telluride (it opens nationally that weekend) and Roger Michell's "Hyde Park on Hudson" which I feel strongly that we WILL see in Telluride.  Here's the poster:

And the post from The Playlist:

The "Hyde Park" teaser:

JOHNNY DEPP AND WES ANDERSON

Wes Anderson is enjoying some of his best reviews for his current "Moonrise Kingdom".  Meanwhile, Johnny Depp may be the biggest movie star on the planet ("Dark Shadows" notwithstanding).  Neither film maker has made an appearance at Telluride, but that could change.  The interweb was lousy yesterday with the story that the two will apparently work together on Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (rhetorically, does that sound a lot like John Madden's "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"?)

Check the barrage of reporting:

Deadline.com

HitFix:

The Playlist:

The Hollywood Reporter:

For hoots, here's the trailer for "Moonrise Kingdom":

KNIGHT WITHOUT DAMSEL

We have gotten used to seeing set photos of Christian Bale with various beautiful women from Terrence Malick's currently filming "Knight of Cups".  Finally, photos emerged yesterday of Bale and someone male.  Oakenfold, who I gather is something of a well known DJ are featured.  Here's a pic:

and the story from The Playlist:

Cruise and The Master/Oz/World Cinema/Coming Attractions

Good Friday to Everyone!

CRUISE AND THE MASTER

The word has been around for some time now that Paul Thomas Anderson had shown Tom Cruise (reportedly they have remained friends after Cruise' performance in Anderson's "Magnolia in 1999).  Consequently, there have been a number of reports that Cruise, and by extension, Scientology,  wasn't pleased.

The NY Daily News explains:
http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/tom-cruise-scientology-members-dislike-portrayal-a-cult-leader-new-film-master-article-1.1109376

Does this alter chances that "The Master" might be a Telluride film...well...who knows.  Cruise has been a supporter of TFF in the past, though I can't find him listed in a TFF program since 2008.  Interesting to ponder...

OZ

OK...this won't be at Telluride, but it does feature Telluride guest James Franco (127 Hours) and it looks kind of cool.  Above is the trailer for "Oz, the Great and Powerful" scheduled for release in Spring 2013.  Also, here's an accompanying story from Get The Big Picture:

http://www.getthebigpicture.net/blog/2012/6/21/first-look-at-james-franco-in-oz-the-great-and-powerful.html

WORLD CINEMA

I don't know if you've seen this or not, but it's kind of entertaining and I swear I have seen this scene play out (after a fashion) at the Telluride Film Festival...won't give anymore away...(thanks to Kris Tapley and Dave Poland)

COMING ATTRACTIONS

I'm tossing in a couple of updates on previous "coming attraction" films.  Darren Aronofsky tweeted a photo earlier this week for his "Noah" project:
The Playlist has the pic and a lengthy story:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/darren-aronofskys-building-an-ark-noah-to-feature-crazy-demon-angels-20120712

And Jeffrey Well at Hollywood Elsewhere tweeted and posted about Terrence Malick shooting on location in L.A. for "Knight of Cups".  The post also includes a brief summary of what the film is supposed to be about:

Eggers and Telluide/UK Film/Love is All?/Beauties and Bale

Good Tuesday to All!

EGGERS AND TELLURIDE

The news release hit my email yesterday at 11:44 AM CDT.  I had a post up at 12:02 PM CDT.  The news from the Telluride Film Festival Press Office was that author Dave Eggers had been selected as the poster artist for TFF#39...and the poster was up and running...

I think I had the story up first anywhere on the web...by a ways...

The frustration, such as it was, when it came to re-tweeting/re-posting...nada...zip...zilch.  As the story rolled through the afternoon all of the movie blog type outlets you'd expect got it posted and it looks like Anne Thompson's "Thompson on Hollywood" got the majority of re-production.  Good for her.
I had hoped that the rapidity of getting their first would have reaped some more online love...not so much.

Nevertheless, there's an interesting side note to the Dave Eggers selection.  Eggers will obviously be in Telluride to schmooze and sign the poster and the press release says he will be honored by the UCLA film school in the course of the weekend's activities...but here's the intriguing thing...Dave Eggers also has film bona fides.  He was the screenwriter for 2009's "Where the Wild Things Are" and "Away We Go" (starring Jon Krasinski and Maya Rudolph.  His novel "Zeithoun" has reportedly been optioned by director Jonathan Demme and if you check his IMDb page you'll find that he has provided the "story" for "Promised Land".

"Promised Land"???  Wait.  Isn't that the Gus Van Sant directed (TFF in 1995-"Elephant" and 2003-"To Die For"), Matt Damon and Jon Krasinski co-written and co-starring film being distributed by frequent Telluride participant Focus Features that The Playlist has reported could well be ready for a fall film fest debut?  Here's The Playlist post:

Yes to all...

So does that mean "Promised Land" is suddenly a lock for TFF #39?  No...but it does make me suspect it has a much better shot at being there than it seemed to have yesterday.

"Promised Land's" IMDb page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2091473/

AND...maybe there is a continuing connection with/to Maya Rudolph who shares three children with Paul Thomas Anderson who also happens to be directing a film with some buzz about it.  You know..."The Master".

Last year my grand conspiracy theory was that George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon might all three show up in Telluride and have an "Oceans" movie reunion while their respective films ("Descendants", "Ides of March, "Moneyball", and "We Bought a Zoo") all played...

Only the Clooney part with "The Descendants" actually happened...but it was fun to spin the grand story.

This Dave Eggers/TFF #39 Poster/"Promised Land"/Gus Van Sant/Focus Feature/Maya-PTA/"Master" thing looks like it will be the story I spin for this year.

Chances that it happens: 1%...but it's a good story.

UK FILM COUNCIL

I continue looking at European film production houses that have had some Telluride presence in that past and to see if they have any films in the pipe that look reasonably Telluride-ish and today that's The UK Film Council.  Their past at Telluride includes:

2011: Shame, We Need to Talk About Kevin
2010: The King's Speech, The First Grader, Tamara Drewe, Another Year, Camerman: Jack Cardiff
2009: Bright Star, Fish Tank
2008: Happy Go Lucky
2007: Brick Lane, When Did You Last See Your Father
2006: Venus, The Last King of Scotland, Severance

As you can see, the last 6 fests have had a substantial UKFC footprint with 2 films common and 2010 being the banner year with 5 films playing.

So what does their announced 2012 slate hold that might have Telluride potential?

The best bet is the Dakota Fanning starrer "Now is Good".  I think the only other possibility (and I think it's not highly likely) is the Scarlett Johansson as an alien film "Under the Skin" from director Jonathan Glazer who is probably best known for 2000's "Sexy Beast".

I'd put "Now is Good's" chances at 30% and "Under the Skin" at 10%.

"Now is Good" IMDb page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1937264/

"Under the Skin" IMDb page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1441395/

LOVE IS ALL?

The international trailer for Susanne Bier's film (and thus T-ride possible) "Love is All You Need" popped up over the weekend.  Here's the link to the story and the trailer from The Playlist:

BEAUTIES AND BALE

And yet at least two more sets of photos have emerged from the Terrence Malick shoot of his "Knight of Cups" project starring Christian Bale.  These feature Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire) and Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) and are beginning to make me think that the film is nothing more than Bale with 37,000 beautiful women...and a beach or an outdoor concert.  You can find these stories both at The Playlist:

Organized Crime/Another Django/More Knight/Al on Stage

Good Wednesday!

ORGANIZED CRIME

In 2009 Matteo Garrone made quite a splash at Telluride with "Gomorrah" a film set in the world of Italy's organized crime.  Garrone, last  month, made another splash at Cannes with his new film "Reality" which won the Grand Prix.  Under normal circumstances, I would have "Reality" down with about a 60% chance of being in Telluride...but now there are complications.

Reports from Italy tell us that Garrone may be in serious legal trouble for having consorted with the mob in Italy in order to make "Gomorrah".  That could put the film's T-ride chances in jeopardy and the director in prison.  Here are two stories with details:

The Hollywood Reporter:
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/gomorrah-mob-collaboration-335913

The Playlist:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/matteo-garrone-accused-of-getting-mixed-up-in-the-mob-to-make-gomorrah-20120612

ANOTHER DJANGO

"Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" was all over the place last week as it released its first teaser/trailer.  Now comes an international version which reportedly has some extra/different footage.  I have linked to it via  The Playlist:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/watch-international-trailer-for-django-unchained-puts-new-footage-into-the-chamber-20120613

MORE KNIGHT

Pictures from the set of Terrence Malick's on-going effort called "Knight of Cups" continues to ooze online.  Today shots include Cate Blanchett.  From The Playlist:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/cate-blanchett-dons-scrubs-in-new-set-photos-from-terrence-malicks-knight-of-cups-20120611

AL ON STAGE

And finally, I saw Al Pacino on stage a couple of years ago  in Central Park on the closing night of Shakespeare on the Park's production of "Merchant of Venice".  At the time I thought it could be the last time Pacino was ever on a stage doing live theater.  Of course, they transferred that production onto Broadway. Still, I said to myself, "it might be the last play he does".  Until yesterday, that might have been true.  Yesterday came the news that Pacino will be appearing in a new mounting of David Mamet's classic "Glengarry Glen Ross"...playing the role Jack Lemmon played in the 1992 film.

Here's the story from Te Playlist:

More Dyer/Oscar Picks/Boyle in London/Poots in Cups

Good Tuesday!

MORE DYER

The twitterverse was inundated with the news yesterday that British author Geoff Dyer had been officially announced as the Guest Director for TFF #39.  And as I have been only too happy to note, readers of this blog have known that for 3 months.  More surprising to me, yesterday, was the announcement that TFF #40 will add a day to its schedule and be a five day event next year opening on Thursday Aug. 29...

I'm terribly excited about the extra day and my imagination is running amok as I think to myself..."if they're going to add an extra day, what other very cool plans to they have?"

The year between the close of each festival and the beginning of the next is always a time fraught with anticipation and excitement and the notion that the fest will be longer and may go beyond the phantasm that it customarily is will mean that next year's 360 day countdown will heighten that anticipation and excitement even more...if that's possible.

Here's the link to the official announcement on the Telluride Film Festival website:
http://telluridefilmfestival.org/news/2012-06

OSCAR PICKS

One of the best Oscarologist sites around has their first pass at predictions up as of yesterday.  Kris Tapley and Guy Lodge have collaborated to get their first list together over at InContention/HitFix.  Among their prognostications are included such potential Telluride 2012 fare as:
"Anna Karenina", "Argo", "Life of Pi", "The Master"' "Amour", "Rust and Bone", "Hyde Park on Hudson", and MTFB nudge "Six Sessions".

Check their first predix and their analysis as they fearlessly make them here:

http://www.hitfix.com/in-contention/off-the-carpet-setting-the-table-for-the-2012-2013-film-awards-season

BOYLE IN LONDON

Danny Boyle...friend of TFF ("Slumdog Millionaire", "127 Hours"), perhaps future TFF attendee ("Trance") and nice guy is getting ever closer to directing the opening for the Olympics in London.  The Hollywood Reporter has a story/interview about some of what we can expect to see:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/london-2012-olympics-opening-danny-boyle-336281

I'm still holding out for a Beatles/Floyd/Zep/Stones portion of that opening.

POOTS IN CUPS

Sounds awful, doesn't it?  Imogen Poots reportedly filming Terrence Malick's "Knight of Cups".  Pictures included from the set via The Playlist:

New Views: Amour, Beyond the Hills, Knight of Cups

Good Morning!

Had a nice day yesterday as one of the friends of this blog and I made tentative plans to meet in Telluride during the festival this year.  I also made my official application for press accreditation for 2012.  I got it last year and am hoping that will be the case again this year.  On to today's post!

NEW VIEWS: AMOUR

One of the two films I am personally most excited about that played Cannes last month and almost certainly will play Telluride is Michale Haneke's "Amour" (the other is "Rust and Bone").  Haneke's other Palme D'Or winner "The White Ribbon" may have been the best film of 2009.  I have included the link to Rope of Silicon's post of two clips from the film here:

http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/amour-movie-clips-haneke-cannes/

NEW VIEWS: BEYOND THE HILLS (PLUS)

The Playlist put up a massive post of pics and clips from over a dozen Cannes films.  It's very impressive.  Check it here:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/new-cannes-photos-richard-jenkins-in-killing-them-softly-20120510

NEW VIEWS: KNIGHT OF CUPS

There has been a good deal of buzz that Terrence Malick's "To the Wonder" ( used to be called "The Burial" and filmed, in part, here in Oklahoma) may actually make an appearance before the end of the year perhaps poking its head out during the fall festival season.  Amazingly, the hyper-slow (or hyper-attention-to-detail...whichever you prefer) director is working on the next project entitled (for now) "Knight of Cups".

Christian Bale and Natalie Portman star and can be seen here in stills from The Playlist:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/christian-bale-natalie-portman-frolick-in-the-surf-in-set-pics-from-terrence-malicks-knight-of-cups-20120531

Is it possible that we might see "Wonder" in 2012 and "Knight" in 2013?  That hardly seems likely given Malick's track record of years (sometimes decades) between projects but it's also hard to believe that we have photographic proof of work on both projects.
