BEGINNING TO READ OSCAR'S TEA LEAVES AS TELLURIDE ENDS AND TORONTO BEGINS
This is just the beginning of our long conversation that will end at the Academy Awards next February. Oscar analysts are beginning to get a real feel about how the season may lay out and close followers of this space know that in the next couple of weeks it really changes from MTFB to The Film Awards Clearinghouse. We'll track the Oscar race all the way through the season with special attention on the films that played as a part of TFF#43.
To that end I have linked the first post-Telluride analysis from Awards Daily's Sasha Stone, Awards Circuit's Mark Johnson and Indiewire's Anne Thompson.
TFF #43 films that get serious focus are:
La La Land, Manchester by the Sea, Moonlight, Arrival, Sully. Frankly, I'm beating the drum for Aaron Eckhardt to get a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Ben Younger's Bleed for This. He's terrific.
Here are the respective pieces from:

BARRY JENKINS TALKS MOONLIGHT WITH A.O. SCOTT
Moonlight writer/director Barry Jenkins sat down with The New York Times A.O. Scott recently and talked about his film, his life and his long history with the Telluride Film Festival. The NYT posted the interview yesterday. Check out the Barry Jenkins interview here.
A PHOTO GALLERY
My wife is the pictorial chronicler of our Telluride Film Fest adventures and I thought it might be cool to show some of the pics she got during last week's fest. So here they are:
SULLY...HANKS AND EASTWOOD
ARRIVAL/AMY ADAMS
MANCHESTER/CASEY AFFLECK
LA LA LAND/EMMA STONE AND DAMIEN CHAZELLE
WAKEFIELD/BRYAN CRANSTON
NORMAN/RICHARD GERE
BRIGHT LIGHTS/CARRIE FISHER
RATE THOSE FILMS!!!
I had a really nice start yesterday with film ratings coming in from regular Janes and Joes that attended this year's TFF. Keep them coming! I'm keeping the polls open through this weekend at least but it won't be indefinite so send them in! Use a 1 to 5 scale with 1 being abysmal and 5 being masterful.
and send them to me:

Hi Michael,
First I want to say that my group, Tom Black, Catherine Halcomb and myself throughly enjoyed meeting you, your wife and your brother. The brunch was such a great way to start our visit to TFF.
Films that I saw and my ratings.
La La Land - 5 stars, excellent feel good movie that reminds us that song, dance and love are all mixed together.
Maudie - 4 stars, loved that acting, heart touching story.
Graduation - 3 stars, moved a little slowly for me, but still enjoyed it
Arrival - 3 1/2 stars, good sic-fi with all the paradox of time travel.
Toni Erdmann - 5 stars, laughed so loud my sides hurt
Neruda - 5 stars, wonderful story, wonderful acting
Things to Come - 2 stars, I just didn't "get it". thin plot seemed to die half way leaving just the cat as the only story
Bleed for This - 4 stars, surprised me how much I enjoyed it. Aaron Eckhart at his best
Norman - 5 stars, Richard Gere was great again, we all have a "Norman" in our lives
Frantz - 4 stars, loved the plots and subplots
Sully - 4 stars, Tom Hanks does it again
Med: A Love Story - 3 stars, good but could have been deeper and better
Through the Wall - 4 1/2 stars, just loved the story and lead actress, Noa Koler
Bright Lights - 3 1/2 stars, if you love Debbie this is for you!
Jeff Brady
Thanks Jeff. We really enjoyed your crew as well and I thought it was a hoot running into all of you as the weekend progressed. Sounds like you enjoyed the fest! Thanks for adding your input to The People's Ratings. The results will go up this coming week (probably Thursday).
Hope we see you all again next year!
