SCHILLER'S 2FERS

Friend of the blog Chris Schiller tweeted out an interesting thought this weekend.  He speculated on some possible TFF#40 "2fers".  People that might star in 2 films showing as a part of the SHOW.  Last year Mads Mikkelsen fit that bill being in both "A Royal Affair" and "The Hunt" (see below, by the way).

JUDI AND PHILOMENA

The Weinstein Company has a crazy lineup of end of the year/awards season/high profile films in its basket:

Perhaps the "smallest" of these is "Philomena" starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan of all people.


If you read this blog much, you know that I'm pretty high on the notion that James Gray's "The Immigrant" will make this year's program and if the TWC peeps are going to have a second film at TFF #40...this might be the one.

Why do I think that we could see this film over Labor Day?

I just have a feeling that the TWC train is going to have more than one pony at TFF this year.  Last year they were repped by "The Sapphires" and the 5 min. (or so) of "The Immigrant" that was a part of the Marion Cotillard tribute and though one TWC film is really the norm at TFF...again, I just have a feeling and "Philomena" is the film that's giving me the vibe.

Also, it's directed by Stephen Frears who has had films crop up at Telluride from time to time: "Tamara Drewe" "Sammie and Rosie Get Laid".  He was a 1987 TFF tributee as well.


THE HUNT

Brits Produce/Mads Mikkelsen: The Hunt/Wadjda Trailer

Good Monday to All.  I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable 4th of July weekend.

BRITS PRODUCE

Two weeks ago, I was looking at domestic distributors that seem to be frequently represented at the Telluride Film Festival.  Last week I focused on smaller scale domestic distributors and a group of individuals that also have a frequent presence.  This week I'm going to be looking at European film production companies that seem to pop up in film credits at Telluride with some frequency.

Today and tomorrow will be centered on the British. The end of the week on the French (and maybe one other).

But let's start with the U.K.:

BBC FILMS

Here's what I have been able to track down from the last half decade vis-a-vis BBC Films at Telluride:

2008: Millions
2009: Fish Tank, Bright Star, An Education
2010: The First Grader, Tamara Drewe
2011: We Have to Talk About Kevin
2012: Ginger and Rosa

BBC Films most likely Telluride offerings for 2013 would include:

"The Invisible Woman" and "Philomena".  There actually seems to have been a backwards confirmation for "The Invisible Woman" as a TFF #40 film according to a Daily Mail story from June 27:

"Philomena" has also been fairly high on my list of Telluride possibles.  I wouldn't be surprised if both films make the cut  for The SHOW.


UK FILM COUNCIL

This British production house has an even more prevalent profile for Telluride over the past decade than BBC Films does, although they were shut out in 2012.

The UK Film Council track record over the past decade:

2006: Venus, The Last King of Scotland, Deep Water
2007: When Did You Last See Your Father, Brick Lane
2008: Happy-Go-Lucky

So They've been represented in 8 of the last 10 years and often with 2 films in those years that they have been represented.  The trouble is that there doesn't seem to be a lot to chose from in the UK Film Council pantheon of films at the moment.

Maybe the most likely is Kevin Macdonald's "How I Live Now".  Macdonald, at one point, was often represented at Telluride but hasn't had a film play TFF since 2007's "My Enemy's Enemy".  The film stars Saoirse Ronan.

We could see Ken Loach's documentary about WWII Britain, "The Spirit of '45".  It played the Berlin Fest.


The third (and least likely possibility from my perspective) is Jonathan Glazer's highly anticipated "Under the Skin" starring Scarlett Johansson as an alien in human form.

Chances:

MADS MIKKELSEN: THE HUNT

TFF #39 Tributee and current buzz-meister (for his role as Hannibal Lecter on NBC's "Hannibal"), Mads Mikkelsen was something of a rarity at last year's fest as he was the lead in 2 films: "A Royal Affair" and "The Hunt".  He was also the lead in Cannes competition film "Michael Kolhaus".  Anne Thompson sat down with the very busy actor while he was in Telluride and talked to him.  Thompson posted the interview on her Thompson on Hollywood site this past week.  Here it is:

Good Monday to Everybody!  Hope it was a good weekend.

The most hilarious tidbit I ran across this weekend was the news that John Cusack is putting together a biopic about Rush Limbaugh.  And, you know, I couldn't resist.  I have begun suggesting titles for the film via Twitter.  Look for the hashtag #rushlimbaughmovietitles.  No word yet from John Cusack's people if they like my suggestions...Here's one of them: "Life of (eating) Pie"...

As you'd expect, a lot of stability as the prognosticators positions harden and a s there are fewer and fewer films that have yet to be seen (no changes in the 1 thru 12 spots).   "Moonrise" probably is getting a little kick from its DVD/VOD release last week (I finally saw it and thought it was terrific...very Wes Anderson-y...which I usually like).  Joe Wright's "Anna Karenina" is the film the suffers from that.

"Amour" director Michael Haneke

It isn't a secret that there is usually a good deal of European cinema represented from year to year at Telluride. Cannes titles sprout like weeds and there is also usually a decent representation from the Berlin Festival.  Those connections were forcefully underscored this last weekend with the announcement of nominations for the European Film Awards...Here's what I mean...

EFA Best Picture includes: "Amour", "Shame", "The Hunt" and "Barbara"..4 of 6 nominees have Telluride pedigrees...

Best Direction: Haneke/Amour, Vinterberg/The Hunt, McQueen/Shame (3 of 5)

Best Actor: Fassbender/Shame, Mikkelsen/The Hunt, Trintignant/Amour (3 of 5)

Best Actress: Hoss/Barbara, Riva/Amour, Tiesel/Paradise Love (3 of 5)

A ROYAL AFFAIR FOR FOREIGN

Denmark has chosen "A Royal Affair" which played at Telluride a few weeks back as a part of the Mads Mikkelsen tribute, as its official entry for the Foreign Language Oscar.  It edged out Susan Bier's "Love is All You Need".  Mikkelsen was very pleasant to talk to wen I caught him Sunday night of the festival at The New Sheridan Bar.  He said he had been amazed at how friendly the entire atmosphere of the festival was.

NEW OSCAR PLAYERS

There has always been some thought that Gus Van Sant's "Promised Land" might get a shot at an Oscar run and we now know hat is true.  What was more surprising this past week was the announcement from Fox Searchlight that they're going to drop the Sacha Gervasi directed Anthony Hopkins starring "Hitchcock" in time for an Oscar run as well.

At some point this last summer I had mentioned both of these as possible Telluride programs depending on whether they were complete or not.  Looks like it was close on both of them.

RUST AND ANIMATION

Caught the Marion Cotillard tribute Sunday morning at The Palm and was nothing short of impressed by Ms. Cotillard during the Q+A after the highlight reel.

I was blown away by a surprise 5 minute screening of a segment of James Gray's forthcoming "Low Life/The Nightingale" or whatever it will be called.  Wonderful and let me just say this if Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix are not Oscar nominated this year...this looks like a good bet for both of them next year...and a good bet for TFF #40 as well.

Then I was very impressed with "Rust and Bone".  I've been hot to see this film since before it was announced for Cannes and was not disappointed.  For my money, better film than Palme D'or winner "Amour".

Gritty, moving, real, touching.  A fine depiction of common people dealing with tragedy and their own limitations and finding the will and ability to transcend them.  Cotillard is spectacular and Matthias Schoenaerts is excellent.

Jacques Audiard welds together a disparate story based on short stories from Craig Davidson and scripted by Audiard and Thomas Bidegain.

And the animation...I was able to slide into Serge Bromberg's presentation of Annecy Animation Sunday afternoon at The Masons Hall.  Beautiful, funny, funky, revelatory and astounding.  Personal favorites were: "Paperman", "Edmond Was a Donkey", "Tunnel", "Aalterate", "Seven Minutes in the Warsaw Ghetto", "Tram" and "Una Furtiva Lagrima".

MADS IN TOWN

Ran into Telluride tributee Mads Mikkelsen at The New Sheridan last night.  Talked briefly about the fest and his trib.  As is almost always the case here, he couldn't have been more kind and generous...well, I guess he could have picked up my bar tab.

Nice meeting you Mr. Mikkelsen.

MORE INFORMED SPEC

Hollywood Elsewhere (Jeff Wells) claims that Oscar winner (and likely nominee again this year) Marion Cotillard and Dane Mads Mikkelsen are two of the traditional three tributees for this year's Telluride Film Festival.  If true, you can expect to see Cotillard's "Rust and Bone" (#1 on this week's "Ten Bets") and Mikkelsen's "The Hunt" (# 19 on the additional "Ten Bets") and/or "A Royal Affair" (nowhere to be found on MTFB).

Marion Cotillard!  I'm down with that!

Wells also runs through films that he has previously suggested are likely: "Argo", "Frances Ha", "Ginger and Rosa", "Hyde Park on Hudson", "Passion"  and maybe "The Sapphires".  He also claims that Terrence Malick's "To the Wonder" is now off the board.

ERNEST AND CELESTINE

I first noted this as a possibility for Telluride on July 16th with a piece that appeared from InContention/Hit Fix's Guy Lodge.

And, as a matter of fact, I included it this past week as #17 in the additional "Ten Bets" yesterday.  Now comes the news from Kris Tapley at InContention/HitFix that the French animated film has a U.S. distributor.  It's GKIDS.  Tapley also speculates that it could pop up this weekend.  Here's the link to his post:

On a related matter...I had one of those moments yesterday for about an hour in which I thought I had stumbled across some possibly shattering info that would ultimately lead me to be able to up my prediction on the chances that "The Master" might still "sneak" as a part of the TFF #39 program this weekend.  I was pretty excited...chased and chased...searched and googled.  Doubled back....
