Welcome to the Lull...that week between Christmas and New Years...

THE LATEST FROM GOLD DERBY

It's not a secret that I have been really pleased to be included as an "Oscar Guru" for MOvie City News' Gurus o' Gold this Oscar season but I'd also be silly to ignore the Oscarologists compendium that is Gold Derby.  So, I'm not.

I took a look at their latest collective predictions and this is where there set of pros have Telluride films situated in their prognostications as 2018 comes to a close.

I am assuming nine films make the Best Picture field;

Leading the way for TFF #45 films in Gold Derby's estimation are both The Favourite and First Man.  Both films are pegged fro 10 nominations.  Roma is close behind with a projected eight nominations.

The Favourite is predicted for: Best Picture, Direction, Actress, Supporting Actress (for both Stone and Weisz), Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Costumes, Film Editing and Production Design.

The Derby has First Man predicted for: Best Picture, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Film Editing, Production Design, Original Score, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects.

Roma is picked for: Best Picture, Direction, Actress, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Film Editing, Sound Editing and Foreign Language Film.

Can You Ever Forgive Me? is named thrice: Actress, Supporting Actor and Adapted Screenplay.

Single nominations are predicted for:

Free Solo: Best Documentary Feature
Cold War: Best Foreign Language Film
Shoplifters: Best Foreign Language Film
Caroline: Best Live Action Short

That's a total of 35 predicted nominations for TFF #45 films.

Additionally, First Reformed from TFF #44 is predicted to earn nominations for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay.

SAG Nominees / Critics' Choice Nominees / Newest Gurus Assesses Golden Globe Chances / Variety's Directors on Directors / Mr. Tapley's Two Cents

It's a Thursday and here's your latest installment of MTFB.

SAG NOMINEES

SAG/AFTRA announced their nominees for acting superlatives for 2018 yesterday.  TFF #45 films were represented as follows:

Best Actress: Olivia Colman/The Favourite, Melissa McCarthy/Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Supporting Male: Richard E. Grant/Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Supporting Female: Emma Stone/The Favourite, Rachel Weisz/The Favourite.

Despite three individual acting nominations, The Favourite did not crack the Best Cast nominee list.  Also, somewhat surprising was the absence of Ethan Hawke for TFF #44's First Reformed.

CRITICS' CHOICE NOMINEES

TFF #45 favorite Yorgos Lanthimos' The Favourite led all films in Monday's announcement of nominees for the Critics Choice Awards from the Broadcast Film Critics Association with 14 nominations.  Ryan Coogler's Black Panther was the second most nominated film with a dozen.  Damien Chazelle's First Man was next with 10 nominations.  Alfonso Cuaron's Roma had eight.

Best Picture nominations went to Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, The Favourite, First Man, Green Book, If Beale Street Could Talk, Mary Poppins Returns, Roma, A Star Is Born and Vice.

Here's how the nominations broke down for TFF #45 films:

The Favourite (14): Picture, Direction, Actress (Colman), Supporting Actress (Stone and Weisz), Ensemble, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design, Costumes, Film Editing, Hair/Makeup, Comedy Film and Comedy Actress,

First Man (10): Picture, Direction, Actor (Gosling), Supporting Actress (Foy), Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design, Film Editing, Score and Visual Effects.

Roma (8): Picture, Direction, Actress (Aparicio), Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design, Film Editing, Foreign Language Film

Can You Ever Forgive Me? (3): Actress (McCarthy), Supporting Actor (Grant), Adapted Screenplay

Cold War (1): Foreign Language Film

Shoplifters (1): Foreign Language Film

Additionally, First Reformed from TFF #44 had two nominations: Best Actor (Hawke) and Original Screenplay.

NEWEST GURUS O' GOLD ASSESSES GOLDEN GLOBES CHANCES

Those of us comprising this season's Gurus of Gold were asked this past week to take a stab at predicting winners for the Golden Globes in three categories now that we know the nominees.  We were tasked with evaluating Best Motion Picture Drama, Musical or Comedy and Director.

My ballot was topped by A Star Is Born (Drama), The Favourite (Musical or Comedy) and I named Alfonso Cuaron as the likely Best Directing winner.

As you might expect, not all the individual Gurus agreed with my assessment.

VARIETY'S DIRECTORS ON DIRECTORS

Variety posted a very cool article on Wednesday with lauded directors writing a few words about 17 of this year's films thought to be contenders during this awards season.  Among those 17 films are six that screened as apart of TFF #45.  They are:

MR. TAPLEY'S TWO CENTS

And finally on this Thursday...Variety's awards expert Kristopher Tapley has weighed in with his first run at predicting Oscar nominees.  Tapley gives his best insight to the 21 feature categories with TFF #45 films pegged for 32 nominations (which would be a little above the Telluride average for the past decade or so).  He also has a TFF #44 film in play for a couple of nominations.

Here's the breakdown with total predicted nominations in parentheses:

Roma (8): Best Picture, Direction, Foreign Language Film, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing.

TFF#45 REPRESENTS IN THE EUROPEAN FILM AWARDS NOMINATIONS

Several films from the 2018 edition of the Telluride Film Festival made their presence known as the European Film Awards nominations were announced.  TFF #45 films pulled in 16 total nominations with an additional nomination for a TFF #44 film.

Cold War led the way with five nominations for Best European Film, Direction, Actress, Actor and Screenwriting.

Both Border and Dogman garnered four nominations each.  For Border they were: Best European Film, Direction, Actress and Screenwriting.  For Dogman: Best European Film, Direction, Actor and Screenwriting.

Girl was nominated in three categories: Best European Film, Direction and Actor.

TFF #44's Foxtrot was nominated for Best Direction.

TIME BREAKS DOWN THE STORY OF THE FRONT RUNNER

With The Front Runner's  limited release on election day last week and its imminent expansion at hand, Time.com posted a look at the story of Sen. Gary Hart's run for President in 1987 (for the '88 election) that is the basis for the film.

Time establishes a timeline for all of the key moments that occurred and assesses those events.

GOTHAM AWARDS NOMINATIONS REVEALED

Telluride films from both TFF #45 and TFF #44 scored well as the Gotham Awards nominations were announced this past week.  The Gothams focus on rewarding excellence in independent film making.

Both The Favourite (TFF #45) and First Reformed (TFF#44) were out front with three nominations each.

The Favourite had nominations for Best Feature, Best Screenplay and a Special Award for the three actresses that are highlighted in the film: Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz.

First Reformed was nominated for Best Feature, Best Screenplay and Ethan Hawke for Best Actor.

Chole Zhao's The Rider (also from TFF #44) was nominated for Best Feature.

Richard E. Grant was nominated for Best Actor for TFF #45 favorite Can You Ever Forgive Me? and Yalitza Aparicio was nominated for Breakthrough Performance for Alfonso Cuaron's Roma.

PETERLOO MOVES

It was announced on Tuesday that Mike Leigh's Peterloo, which played TFF #45 as well as Venice, Toronto and will play as past of the BFI London Fest, will move its release date .  The film was scheduled to be released in the U.S. on Nov. 9th but now Amazon Studios has pushed the release date to April 5, 2019.

The distributor also said that the film will be released this fall in the U.K. so that it will qualify for the BAFTAs.

The film has had something of a rough go this year as it was reportedly not chosen for Cannes.  At Telluride last month the response to my polls of both fest-goers and industry professionals revealed that Peterloo didn't draw enough respondents from either group to merit including it in the ratings lists.

Peterloo details the true story of a Labor movement in Britain in August of 1819 that was organized to gain the right to vote.  That resulted in the deaths of 15 people with another 400 injured as the in an action taken by the cavalry that has become known as the Peterloo Massacre.

LOWERY TALKS THE OLD MAN

Chris O'Falt at Indiewire posted his latest Toolkit podcast this week.  His guest is The Old Man and The Gun director David Lowery.  Lowery also adapted the screenplay from an article by David Grann from his New Yorker article.  Grann was also represented at Telluride by Trial by Fire, also based on another of his New Yorker articles.

Lowery spends some time talking about the making of the film which may or may not but probably is Robert Redford's last acting gig.

DAMIEN CHAZELLE TALKS FIRST MAN WITH THR

First Man director Damien Chazelle is basking in the spotlight of presenting the opening film for the Venice Film Festival, after which we are morally certain, he will wing his way to Colorado to screen the eagerly awaited film at TFF #45 (will he bring along the film's star Ryan Gosling?)

The Oscar winning director of La La Land offers up the true story of man's first moon landing through the lens of astronaut Neil Armstrong (who had strong roots in Telluride).  Other cast members who would be cool to see in T-ride include Corey Stoll who plays Buzz Aldrin, Claire Foy who is Armstrong's wife Janet and Kyle Chandler who plays Deke Slayton.

As a part of the run up to the big lift off for the film coming next week, The Hollywood Reporter has a huge feature on Chazelle this week.

NEW POSTERS FOR THE FAVOURITE AND ROMA

I have to admit that one of the films that I am most intrigued by among the list of films that I'm saying will play in Telluride next week is Yorgos Lanthimos' The Favourite.  The trailer looks interesting and I'm a sucker for Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz.

In addition to those factors is the claim from Indiewire's Anne Thompson a few days back that The Favourite might be the early favorite to win Best Picture.

Needless to say, it's on my list to catch next week in the mountains.

The film got a new international poster yesterday and here it is:

You have to admit...it is unique.

Also adding a new poster yesterday was another film that is getting huge buzz prior to screening at all four fall film fests (T-ride, TIFF, Venice and NYFF).  Alfonso Cuaron's Roma's new poster is spare but maybe that's the point:

Roma is also high on my list for next week.

TFF #43 Has a Guest Director / Tupac / Denial Undenied

Good Friday.  Hope everyone had a good week.  I know I did. I've spent this week in Salt Lake City at the National Speech and Debate tournament both as a coach with kids competing and as a part of the tournament staff.  It was a great time but ends today.

TFF #43 HAS A GUEST DIRECTOR

Many of you may have seen this yesterday.  I certainly re-tweeted the news a couple of times.  German film director Volker Sclondorff has been named as this year's guest director for TFF.  Here's the press release that was sent out yesterday:

BERKELEY, CA – Telluride Film Festival, presented by National Film Preserve LTD., is proud to announce its 2016 Guest Director, Volker Schlöndorff. The globally acclaimed German filmmaker, producer, writer and actor is set to select a series of films to present at the 43rd Telluride Film Festival running over Labor Day Weekend, September 2-5, 2016.

Festival organizers annually select one of the world’s great film enthusiasts to join them in the creation of the Festival’s program lineup. The Guest Director serves as a key collaborator in the Festival’s programming decisions, bringing new ideas and overlooked films to Telluride. In keeping with Telluride Film Festival tradition, Schlöndorff’s film selections, along with the rest of the Telluride lineup, will be kept secret until Opening Day.

“Volker is the type of person Tom Luddy and I dream about when we begin the Guest Director selection process,” said Telluride Film Festival executive director Julie Huntsinger. “His love and knowledge of the cinema allows for limitless possibilities; films we could never imagine being shown on the big screen again. What a truly unique experience we will have at the 43^rd Telluride Film Festival with Volker in charge!”

One of the most significant and internationally celebrated German directors of our time, Volker Schlöndorff has a passion for bringing German and international literary classics to the screen and making them accessible to larger audiences. Volker began his filmmaking journey at the legendary film school IDHEC followed by his first debut feature, YOUNG TÖRLESS (1966). Decades later, having worked in Europe and America, his extensive body of work has garnered him an Academy Award, the Palme d’Or, and international accolades from Berlin to Venice to Telluride, where he received the Silver Medallion in 2014.

"Since 1981 Telluride has been part of my life, my favorite festival for the uniqueness of the location and the number of friends I met and made there,” said Schlöndorff. “It's not just about our love of movies, but of life and conviviality and good will for a lot of lost causes. Julie Huntsinger and Tom Luddy are in touch with me all around the year, exchanging funny links and gossip. Of all honours, it's one of the greatest to curate a program in the mountains."

TUPAC

Open Road Films which had such great success last year at Telluride with Spotlight has three films that could possibly sneak into the Telluride lineup; Oliver Stone's Snowden, Ben Younger's boxing pic Bleed for This and Benny Boom's Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez on Me.  The latter dropped a teaser trailer yesterday.  The trailer is here with coverage linked below:

I was in Telluride this past weekend for about 8 seconds.  I can report that they're already in the process of setting up for this year's festival.  We're getting closer...

And I can confidently announce that there will be a Michael's Telluride Film Blog shindig called: "The Guide to the Ride; The Flow of the SHOW" on Friday, Sept. 2 from 5:00 to 5:30 PM in The River Club.  Larry and Mitzi Mallard of the Club will be our hosts and I am told that refreshments will be provided.  The River Club is located at 550 Depot in Telluride.  That's 4 blocks west of the Gondola station.  Come by and say hello.

"A Dangerous Method" drops because of its addition to the New York Film Festival.  "Albert Nobbs" drops because it was announced as a "World" premiere for Toronto last week.  "The Ides of March" drops as I haven't seen any traction for the notion that it will play Telluride anywhere else.  All of them still COULD make TFF38...I'm just saying that their chances seem to me to be less than they were a week ago.

SEAN VS. TERRY

It seems that Sean Penn doesn't have a great deal of warmth toward "The Tree of Life."  Penn is reported to have been less than complimentary about the film over the weekend. 

"Tree" won this year's "Golden Palm" at Cannes and has some support as a possible Best Picture nominee for the Oscars.  And of course, I stalked the film mercilessly for a couple of years in this space.

DEEP BLUE SEA

Rachel Weisz is a busy girl this fall.  One of her projects that we could see in 11 days is "The Deep Blue Sea" directed by Terence Davies.  The film is based on a Terence Rattigan play and also features Tom Hiddleston.

W.E. PIC

And finally,
3 weeks ago, Kris Tapley at Incontention.com put up his first stab at sussing out the T-ride lineup.  Included as a very real possibility on that list was Madonna's sophomore directing effort "W.E."  I have been less inclined to believe that it and she will be in the San Juans...however...

I am reminded of how the festival played Bennett Miller's "Capote" in 2005 and then turned around and featured Douglas McGrath's "Infamous" the next year.  Two films that focused on much the same subject matter one year apart.

How does that relate?  Think of "W.E." as the counterpart to last year's "The King's Speech."  A lot of the story and characters are the same just like the "Capote/Infamous" situation from 2005-06.  So maybe...
