FIRST MAN STAN

I'm including a couple of links to First Man oriented posts/stories/interviews as I am unapologetically in its corner as we head into the last few days of Oscar voting.  I am, as the kids say in the parlance of our times, stanning for the film and performers...

Indiewire's Kate Erbland talks to Oscar winning (Spotlight) screen writer Josh Singer.

The L.A. Times' Glenn Whipp talks to star Ryan Gosling and director Damien Chazelle.

Kate Erbland's Indiewire story from right after First Man's Toronto screening.

And just because I really like the film and performances and think it should also make the final Oscar lineup for best picture...

Here's a story about Melissa McCarthy's casting in Marielle Heller's Can You Ever Forgive Me? from The Hollywood Reporters' Pamela McClintock.

ONE HUNDRED 2019 FILMS FROM THE FILM STAGE

The Film Stage has posted its long 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2019 list.  From that collection of titles here are a dozen titles that feel like (at least this far out) decent best to make the TFF #46 list:

#98-The Woman in the Window
#96-The Kindness of Strangers
#93-Lucy in the Sky
#86-Fireball
#80-Against All Enemies
#62-Ema
#51-Radioactive
#49-A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
#48-Mainstream
#16-The Truth
#15-Dry Run
#7- Little Women

Of course there are others on the list that I think might be in play come Labor Day (The Report, Motherless Brooklyn) and others that I'd love to see make TFF #46 (Radegund, The Irishman).

The complete 100 film list plus honorable mentions is linked here.

That's your MTFB fix for this Monday.  I'll have more on Thursday including a substantial Oscar predictions update...lots of categories as we countdown to Oscar nomination morning on Jan. 22nd.

SAG Nominees / Critics' Choice Nominees / Newest Gurus Assesses Golden Globe Chances / Variety's Directors on Directors / Mr. Tapley's Two Cents

It's a Thursday and here's your latest installment of MTFB.

SAG NOMINEES

SAG/AFTRA announced their nominees for acting superlatives for 2018 yesterday.  TFF #45 films were represented as follows:

Best Actress: Olivia Colman/The Favourite, Melissa McCarthy/Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Supporting Male: Richard E. Grant/Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Supporting Female: Emma Stone/The Favourite, Rachel Weisz/The Favourite.

Despite three individual acting nominations, The Favourite did not crack the Best Cast nominee list.  Also, somewhat surprising was the absence of Ethan Hawke for TFF #44's First Reformed.

Indiewire has the complete rundown of all the nominees linked here.

CRITICS' CHOICE NOMINEES

TFF #45 favorite Yorgos Lanthimos' The Favourite led all films in Monday's announcement of nominees for the Critics Choice Awards from the Broadcast Film Critics Association with 14 nominations.  Ryan Coogler's Black Panther was the second most nominated film with a dozen.  Damien Chazelle's First Man was next with 10 nominations.  Alfonso Cuaron's Roma had eight.

Best Picture nominations went to Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, The Favourite, First Man, Green Book, If Beale Street Could Talk, Mary Poppins Returns, Roma, A Star Is Born and Vice.

Here's how the nominations broke down for TFF #45 films:

The Favourite (14): Picture, Direction, Actress (Colman), Supporting Actress (Stone and Weisz), Ensemble, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design, Costumes, Film Editing, Hair/Makeup, Comedy Film and Comedy Actress,

First Man (10): Picture, Direction, Actor (Gosling), Supporting Actress (Foy), Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design, Film Editing, Score and Visual Effects.

Roma (8): Picture, Direction, Actress (Aparicio), Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design, Film Editing, Foreign Language Film

Can You Ever Forgive Me? (3): Actress (McCarthy), Supporting Actor (Grant), Adapted Screenplay

Boy Erased (1): Supporting Actress (Kidman)

Cold War (1): Foreign Language Film

Shoplifters (1): Foreign Language Film

Additionally, First Reformed from TFF #44 had two nominations: Best Actor (Hawke) and Original Screenplay.

The complete list of all nominees with some commentary from Anne Thompson is linked here from Indiewire.

The Critics Choice Awards will be handed out on Jan. 13, 2019.

NEWEST GURUS O' GOLD ASSESSES GOLDEN GLOBES CHANCES

Those of us comprising this season's Gurus of Gold were asked this past week to take a stab at predicting winners for the Golden Globes in three categories now that we know the nominees.  We were tasked with evaluating Best Motion Picture Drama, Musical or Comedy and Director.

My ballot was topped by A Star Is Born (Drama), The Favourite (Musical or Comedy) and I named Alfonso Cuaron as the likely Best Directing winner.

As you might expect, not all the individual Gurus agreed with my assessment.

Check out the latest Gurus o' Gold linked here.

VARIETY'S DIRECTORS ON DIRECTORS

Variety posted a very cool article on Wednesday with lauded directors writing a few words about 17 of this year's films thought to be contenders during this awards season.  Among those 17 films are six that screened as apart of TFF #45.  They are:

Guillermo Del Toro on Alfonso Cuaron's Roma
Ron Howard on The Front Runner
Haiffa al-Mansour on Marielle Heller's Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Christopher Nolan on Damien Chazelle's First Man
Alexander Payne on Pawel Pawlikowski's Cold War
Josh Safdie on Yorgos Lanthimos' The Favourite

The complete article is linked here.

MR. TAPLEY'S TWO CENTS

Logo via Variety

And finally on this Thursday...Variety's awards expert Kristopher Tapley has weighed in with his first run at predicting Oscar nominees.  Tapley gives his best insight to the 21 feature categories with TFF #45 films pegged for 32 nominations (which would be a little above the Telluride average for the past decade or so).  He also has a TFF #44 film in play for a couple of nominations.

Here's the breakdown with total predicted nominations in parentheses:

Roma (8): Best Picture, Direction, Foreign Language Film, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing.

The Favourite (7): Best Picture, Actress (Colman), Supporting Actress (Stone and Weisz), Original Screenplay, Costumes, Production Design.

First Man (7): Best Picture, Cinematography, Film Editing, Score, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects.

Cold War (3): Best Direction, Foreign Language Film, Cinematography.

Can You Ever Forgive Me? (3): Best Actress (McCarthy), Supporting Actor (Grant), Adapted Screenplay

Border (2): Foreign Language Film, Makeup/Hair

Shoplifters (1): Foreign Language Film

Free Solo (1): Documentary Feature

AND...from TFF #44: First Reformed (2): Best Actor (Hawke), Original Screenplay.

Tapley's complete set of predictions are linked here.

The FAC Update on Best Actress and Actor / Critic's Choice Awards / New York Critics Online / Golden Globe Nominations On the Way

Here's another edition of MTFB and The Film Awards Clearinghouse for the second Monday in December...we don't believe these results have been hacked by the Russians...

THE FAC UPDATE ON BEST ACTRESS AND ACTOR

Here's the latest look at what The FAC metric says the best guesses are for Best Actress and Actor at this point in mid-December prior to last night's Critics' Choice and today's Golden Globe nominations.

I have used the publicly available Oscar predictions from the following pundits:

Erik Anderson/Awards Watch
Clayton Davis/Awards Circuit
Greg Ellwood/The Playlist-Awards Campaign
Scott Feinberg/The Hollywood Reporter
Joey Magidson/Hollywood News
Nathaniel Rogers/Film Experience
Sasha Stone/Awards Daily
Kristopher Tapley/Variety-InContention
Anne Thompson/Indiewire

TFF #43 films are in Bold.  The person's previous position follows its title in parentheses.

BEST ACTRESS

1) Emma Stone/La La Land (1)
2) Natalie Portman/Jackie (2)
3) Annette Being/20th Century Women (3)
4) Ruth Negga/Loving (4)
5) Isabelle Huppert/Elle (7)

6) Amy Adams/Arrival (6)
7) Meryl Streep/Florence Foster Jenkins (5)

8) Taraji P. Henson/Hidden Figures (9)
9) Jessica Chastain/Miss Sloane (8)
10) Marion Cotillard/Allied (10)

Hot: Huppert
Not: Streep
On the Cusp: Jennifer Lawrence/Passengers
Comment: the top four remain exactly the same and the top ten remain the top ten with a bit of jostling.  I'm getting a vibe that Ruth Negga (as well as Joel Edgerton) and the while Loving campaign might be waning.

BEST ACTOR

1) Casey Affleck/Manchester by the Sea (2)
2) Denzel Washington/Fences (1)
3) Tom Hanks/Sully (4)
4) Ryan Gosling/La La Land (3)
5) Joel Edgerton/Loving (5)

6) Andrew Garfield/Hacksaw Ridge (7)
7) Warren Beatty/Rules Don't Apply (6)
8) Viggo Mortensen/Captain Fantastic (8)
9) Andrew Garfield/Silence (9)
10) Adam Driver/Paterson (NR)

Hot: Driver
Not: Matthew McConnaughey/Gold who dropped put of the top ten.
On the Cusp: Michael Keaton/The Founder
Comment: See above Re: Loving and Edgerton.  The flip flopping between Washington and Affleck is likely to play right through Oscar night.  That's your race.

At this point TFF #43 looks to have highlighted four Oscar nominated lead performances and possibly five depending on whether Amy Adams can sneak in.  I still think she has a relatively good shot.

And the Madness Continues: BFCA, L.A. and N.Y. Critics Weigh-In / Visual Effects Short List: TFF #43 Films in the Mix

It's the first Monday in December friends...and we're still here.

AND THE MADNESS CONTINUES: BFCA, L.A. AND NEW YORK CRITICS WEIGH IN

My last post on Thursday focused on the announcement of year end film awards recognition from The National Board of Review and The Gotham Awards.  The Independent Spirit Award nominations were announced the week before.  In those announcement came the first solid evidence that the TFF #43 lineup is going to be front and center as we move through the awards season.  I think many of us thought something extraordinary was happening over Labor Day.

The end of this week saw the announcement of of awards and/or nominations from The New York Film Critics Circle, The Los Angeles Film Critics Association and The Broadcast Film Critics Association (Critics' Choice Awards).  This latest round of awards seems to confirm the first onslaught.  Here's what happened at the end of this past week...

Three TFF #43 films have been dominant in these early accolades: La La Land, Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea.  There has also been reasonable mentions at various points for Arrival, Sully and Toni Erdmann.

The Broadcast Film Critics/Critics Choice nominations saw La La Land lead the field with 12 followed closely by Moonlight and Arrival with 10 each.  Manchester by the Sea had eight nominations.  Each of those four films had a nomination for Best Picture included in their haul. Additionally, Sully was nominated for Best Picture as well as three other awards.  Neruda and Toni Erdmann were nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.  All told TFF #43 films collected 46 BFCA nominations.

Coverage of the BFCA nominations is here from Indiewire and here from SlashFilm.

Meanwhile, The Los Angeles critics met yesterday and cast ballots and Barry Jenkins' Moonlight dominated with four awards including: Best Picture, Direction, Supporting Actor/Ali and Cinematography.  La La Land won Best Original Score and Isabelle Huppert was Best Actress in part for Things to Come (Elle was also mentioned).

La La Land and Manchester by the Sea were the runners-up in a number of categories.  La La was runner-up for Picture, director, film editing, cinematography and production design while Manchester finished second for Actor/Affleck, Supporting Actress/Williams and Screenplay.  Toni Erdmann was the Best Foreign Language Film runner-up.

Coverage and analysis of the L.A. critics is here from:

Variety

Entertainment Weekly

Indiewire

Movie City News

Awards Circuit

The New York Film Critics Circle announced their winners for 2016 on Thursday and Telluride 2016 films dominated that landscape as well with TFF accounting for awards in 75% of the NYFCC categories.  Damien Chazelle's La La Land was named Best Picture, Barry Jenkins Moonlight won Best Director, Best Supporting Actor/Mahershala Ali and Cinematography.  Kenneth Lonergan's Manchester by the Sea also was named thrice: Best Actor/Casey Affleck, Best Supporting Actress/Michelle Williams and Best Screenplay.  Isabelle Huppert was named Best Actress, in part for Things to Come.  Toni Erdmann was named the Best Foreign Language Film.

New York reportage can be found here from Indiewire and here from Entertainment Weekly.

Coming up this week will be the announcement of The American Film Institutes's list of Best Films as well as the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday.  Additionally, Golden Globe nominations are announced a week from today.

For my money, among all we've had slung at us awards wise over the past two weeks, I can tell you that I mostly pay attention to NBR, BFCA, NY and LA critics.  Among the news to come I pay most attention to: AFI, Golden Globe nominations, BAFTA nominations and the guilds: SAG, DGA, PGA, WGA.

For analysis of what some of these early nominations and awards may mean in the context of the Oscar race I have provided links here to Anne Thompson and Eric Kohn's ScreenTalk podcast as well as this piece from Awards Daily's Sasha Stone.

VISUAL EFFECTS SHORT LIST:  TFF #43 FILMS IN THE MIX

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 20 films that have made their preliminary short list for the Visual Effects Oscar.  That's not a category that TFF films normally find themselves but this year two films from #43 are alive and kicking.  Clint Eastwood's Sully and Denis Villenueve's Arrival made the initial cut.  AMPAS will cut this list down to 10 for nomination voting. Awards Daily has the complete list here.

That's your Monday.  Stay tuned for more on Thursday.
