In Depth for Three TFF #42 FIlms: "Steve Jobs", "Beasts of No Nation" and "Carol" / Hail Coens!

Good Monday to All...

IN DEPTH FOR THREE TFF #42 FILMS

The P.R. machine for a number of Oscar-y films has warmed up considerably in the last six weeks and that certainly includes a number of films that played at Telluride last month.  I have in three films from TFF #42 that are getting a lot of attention:

"STEVE JOBS"

Looks at the film from The Hollywood Reporter which has a big overview of the film and The Playlist which reports on some changes that have been made in the film since we saw it screen in T-ride:

"BEASTS OF NO NATION"

Anne Thompson of Thompson on Hollywood reports on Idris Elba's transformation into his character for Cary Fukunaga's "Beasts of No Nation":

"CAROL"

Finally, The New York Times' Mekado Murphy asks "Carol" director Todd Haynes five questions about the film :

HAIL COENS!

One of the best things about my weekend was the release Friday of a trailer for the new Coen Brothers film "Hail, Caesar" which stars everyone in Hollywood plus a couple of other people.

Of course, the film has no Telluride connection (save for the Coens tribute in 2013) but I'm a Coens fan so...

Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Scarlett Johannson, Jonah Hill, Frances McDormand and more star and show up in the trailer.

It looks silly and entertaining.  The film is currently set to open in early February 2016.  Here it is via YouTube:

That'll do it for Monday.  Check back Thursday for more...

Leviathan Leads London/Trailers for Two/Oscar Matters/News from the Future/Rudderless Reminder

Good Thursday everyone...

LEVIATHAN LEADS LONDON

Russian Foreign Language Oscar entry and Telluride/Cannes hit "Leviathan" continues to impress as it was just named the Best Film at the recently concluded 58th British Film Institutes's London Film Festival.  The Andrey Zvyagintsev directed film was also the Best Screenplay winner at Cannes last May.  The film was a bit of a surprise as Russia's official Oscar entry as it is less than flattering in its depiction of modern day Russia.  I've linked coverage of the London win from HitFix and Variety:

http://www.hitfix.com/in-contention/leviathan-takes-best-film-at-the-london-film-festival#Xd5llxLfyeZgDIBb.99

http://variety.com/2014/film/news/russian-oscar-entry-leviathan-takes-top-prize-at-london-film-fest-1201333550/

TRAILERS FOR TWO

Trailers were released this week for two Telluride #41 films, both of them documentaries.  Joshua Oppenheimer's follow up to "The Act of Killing": "The Look of Silence" as well as Chuck Workman's examination of the life and career of Orson Welles: "Magician".  Stories and links to the trailers are here:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/watch-new-trailer-for-act-of-killing-followup-the-look-of-silence-plus-18-min-talk-with-director-joshua-oppenheimer-20141021

OSCAR MATTERS

The latest edition of The Film Awards Clearinghouse is going to be delayed until Monday with my apologies.  Wedding and play competition finally overwhelmed my ability to have that ready for today.  To tide you over until Monday's post I have linked Scott Feinberg's latest Feinberg Forecast from The Hollywood Reporter here:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/feinberg-forecast-oscar-landscape-post-741955

NEWS FROM THE FUTURE

Two projects that I am following had news this week.. The Coen Brothers added more cast members to their next project, "Hail Caesar" and Quentin Tarantino is a step closer to filming his next opus, "The Hateful Eight" just outside Telluride.  Here are stories about each announcement via The Hollywood Reporter and Tempo:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/coen-brothers-hail-caesar-adds-741718

http://entertainment.tempo.com.ph/2014/10/tarantino-film-gets-permit-to-use-telluride-ranch/

RUDDERLESS REMINDER

William H. Macy's Oklahoma filmed and written directing debut "Rudderless" continues its run as it expends into more markets and theaters this week as well is available on demand. Check it out.

That's all for now.  More on Monday...

The Usual Suspects TFF #41 Edition: Part One/A New Film to Consider/A Look at Herzog's Queen/Casting News from the Coens

Welcome to Tuesday...

THE USUAL SUSPECTS TFF #41 EDITION: PART ONE

Over the last week, I did my annual rundown of U.S. film distributors that have a had at least some semblance of a relationship with the Telluride Film Festival and attempted to bring a critical eye to the offerings of each of those companies in terms of what might make the grade for TFF #41.  Today, I shift the focus away from companies and onto individuals, primarily directors, but occasionally producers, writers and actors that have also appeared frequently at Telluride.  I call them "The Usual Suspects".  I have a list of around three dozen people that make the list.

It's also a list that fluctuates with the times.  Had I been writing this 35 years ago Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese would have probably made the list.  Not now, despite Coppola's return to Telluride last year.  For the purposes of this blog, I will sometimes re-add someone who has fallen off as you will see Peter Bogdanovich included later this week.

I won't be including all 35-36 because not all of the members of "The Usuals" have a film ready to play. Ultimately this year's list of "Suspects" numbers 14 who have a total of 16 films between them that are Telluride-possible.  I'll break it into three parts beginning with Part One today.

Let's start withe the most usual of the suspects which is Werner Herzog.  A Telluride without Herzog is a rare thing and the film maker almost always has some project that is ready for display.  This year is no different as Herzog's name is attached to two films that could, and I suspect will play at TFF #41,  Herzog directs "Queen of the Desert" which is reportedly ready and which Hollywood Elsewhere's Jeff Wells flat says is a lock for Telluride.  I agree.  It's #4 on last week's "Ten Bets" list.

In addition to "Queen" which stars Nicole Kidman, Herzog is also a producer of the Joshua Oppenheimer directed documentary "The Look of Silence" which is the sequel to "The Act of Killing" which played Telluride as well.  I'm a pretty firm believer that this film will make the 2014 T-ride lineup as well. Accordingly, I have "Look of Silence" listed at #10 on last week's "Ten Bets".

Another big time "Usual" is documentary film maker Ken Burns.  Burns and Herzog share insider status at Telluride.  Both are regarded as part of the T-ride hierarchy.  Burns is also almost always there and almost always has a project available to be programmed.  This year he has "The Roosevelts" ready...it's scheduled to run on PBS just days after the festival concludes.  Consequently, I have it listed at #6.

Another quick note about Burns.  I made a big deal last year that I thought that Burns would aid in the programming of the Native American silent film "Daughter of the Dawn".  I thought that was going to happen for most of last year and I was wrong, of course.  But I wouldn't be shocked if the film didn't pop up at this year's festival.

Usual suspect #3 is Errol Morris.  Morris is working away on a couple of his own projects but is, like Herzog, a producer of Oppenheimer's "Look of Silence" giving that film an even higher likelihood of making the Telluride lineup.

Usual Suspect #4 is Alexander Payne.  No one (with the exception maybe of Jason Reitman) has made his way onto the list of "The Usual Suspects" more quickly than Payne has over the past few years.  Problem is that Payne doesn't have a strong candidate for inclusion this year.  Payne is listed as an executive producer of "Kumiko: The Treasure Hunter" which might get it some traction had it not played a bunch of festivals already including Sundance and Nantucket here in the U.S.

I suspect that Payne will be attending this year's fest in Telluride because he loves the festival.  It's also a better than even  bet that he programs a film which is not his own as he has done before.

Perhaps, this year, Payne will simply be in support of companion Laura Dern.  Last I knew, they were still an item and Dern could easily be a "Telluride Twofer" this year as she appears in Jean Marc Vallee's "Wild" and Ramin Bahrani's "99 Homes" both of which could play the festival.

That's today's "Usual Suspects".  Five more tomorrow.

A NEW FILM TO CONSIDER

Al Pacino as "Manglehorn" (photo via Hollywood Elsewhere)

Jeffrey Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere suggested yesterday that David Gordon Green's "Manglehorn" will play at Telluride.  The film stars Al Pacino as an Austin, TX. based ex-con who can't let go of his past.  Honestly, this film hasn't been on my Telluride radar in  any significant way up until now, but you have to take Wells pretty seriously.

Pacino previously was a guest at Telluride in 2000 with his very own "Chinese Coffee".

Here's the link to the Wells story:

http://www.hollywood-elsewhere.com/2014/07/got-life-leave-alone/

And "Manglehorn's" IMDb page:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2893490/?ref_=ttco_co_tt

If it comes to pass, do I smell an Al Pacino tribute?

A LOOK AT HERZOG'S "QUEEN"

The Playlist, among others, posted the first official photo of Werner Herzog's "Queen of the Desert" which, as noted above, I fully expect to be included as a part of the TFF #41 program.

The film has been described as something like David Lean's classic "Lawrence of Arabia" and is based on the true story of Gertrude Bell with Nicole Kidman in that role.

Above is the photo and here's the link to the The Playlist's accompanying story:

CASTING NEWS FROM THE COENS

Not that it'll play Telluride, but who knows, "Inside Llewyn Davis" did...the Coen Brothers have apparently added another couple of layers to the cast of their next project "Hail Caesar!".  Scarlett Johansson and Jonah Hill were reported to have joined the cast by multiple sources over the weekend.  The film stars George Clooney and Josh Brolin and is said to be a satire of Hollywood's Golden Age.  Others in the cast include Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton and Channing Tatum.  IMDb lists the film as being in pre-production.

Here are a couple of casting stories from the weekend from The Hollywood Reporter and from The Playlist:

Twosday/Your Invitations/Tribute Claims/Gravity Views

It's TWOSDAY...meaning just two days until the start of this year's SHOW.

The Patterson Train leaves the station to head west this afternoon.  We're over-nighting in Salida, CO. and then rolling on in the rest of the way to Telluride on Wednesday morning.  We really want to be sure that we make it to the Free Concert featuring The Punch Brothers on Town Park Stage at 5:00 pm.  I wouldn't be surprised if there was a surprise appearance or two during the concert.

Then there's the film in the park tomorrow night: "The Big Lebowski".  That's a clue, friend-o (see below).

YOUR INVITATIONS

Invite #1: Don't forget to drop by The River Club (550 W. Depot in Telluride) at 5:00 pm on Thursday for the Third Annual "Guide to the Ride".  Friends, food, a little vino and we'll talk about what's going to happen over Labor Day weekend in Telluride.

Invite #2:  Don't forget to rate the films you see this week and drop me a line so I can include them in this year's "People's Telluride" film ratings.

Invite #3: Check out Screencraft.org starting Wednesday for my guest writer spot on their blog.

TRIBUTE CLAIMS

Showbiz411.com claimed yesterday that one of this year's three tributes will be for The Coen Brothers.

That jibes with a lot of the chatter I've been hearing as we count down the last few hours before the 40th edition of the Telluride Film Festival takes flight.  Sounds right.  The post also claims that another tribute will be for British actor/director Ralph Fiennes.  Here's where I quibble.  That is NOT a name I've been hearing in connection with a tribute.  I'm not saying that it won't be Fiennes.  I am saying that I've a couple of pretty good sources that have whispered another name...American actor/director...maybe founded a film festival of his own in Utah.

See for yourself by taking a look at the ShowBiz411 post here:
http://www.showbiz411.com/2013/08/26/telluride-2013-coen-brothers-will-get-one-of-three-tributes

GRAVITY VIEWS

There is a lot of back and forth in the press about whether "Gravity" seems like a "Telluride" film and consequently whether it will play.  I continue to be in the "it'll play" camp.  You'll be able to see that belief in tomorrow morning's final "Ten Bets" post.

Nevertheless, it continues to be a film that intrigues me.  Yesterday The Playlist linked two television spots fr the film starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney and directed by Alfonso Cuaron.  You can find that post and those links here:

No?/More for Toronto/Inside Inside Llewyn

Good Wednesday All!

NO?

Gael Garcia Bernal in Pablo Larrain's "No"

I still have a strong feeling that Pablo Larrain's "No" which played to very good review out of competition in Cannes last May will turn up in Telluride.  This despite the fact that it was once a "Ten Bets" film but has slipped to somewhere in the 11-20 spots.

That being said, I have included a post that popped up in the last 48 hours concerning the film which stars Gael Garcia Bernal.  Here it is...

From The Washington Post:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/the_americas/actor-gael-garcia-bernal-says-no-film-taught-him-about-chiles-pain-during-dictatorship/2012/07/30/gJQATEKkLX_story.html

"No's" IMDb entry: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2059255/

MORE TORONTO

Toronto's International Film Festival added nearly 70 more titles to their lineup yesterday.  The story can be found at this link to The Playlist:

http://www.indiewire.com/article/toronto-adds-over-60-new-2012-titles-including-documentaries-midnight-madness-and-tiff-kids#

You can also access their full look at all of the TIFF films announced so far here:

http://www.indiewire.com/article/tiff-list-2012-an-updated-list-of-all-films-at-the-toronto-international-film-festival#

If the recent past is a guide, something around 16-18 films will be on both the Telluride and the Toronto programs; 6-8 of those are likely to come from Galas and Special Presentations.  Of what has been announced thus far, the most likely overlaps include:

Among Galas: "Hyde Park on Hudson", "The Reluctant Fundamentalist", "Midnight's Children" and "The Silver Linings Playbook".

Among Special Presentations: "Cloud Atlas" (yeah, I said it), "Frances Ha" (new from Noah Baumbach and really has been under the radar), "Hannah Arendt", "The Hunt", "The Impossible", "A Late Quartet", "No", "Quartet", "Reality", "Rust and Bone"and  "The Sapphires".

Additionally, the Ken Burns doc "The Central Park Five" has been announced for Toronto's Documentary segment.  I count on it being in Telluride.

INSIDE INSIDE LLEWYN

Carey Mulligan in "Inside Llewyn Davis"

It's no secret that I'm a Coen Brothers fan and eagerly await each of their films and "Inside Llewyn Davis" is no exception.  Is it done?  Probably not.  IMDb lists it as being in post production.  There had been some speculation by people smarter than I that it might, indeed be ready and show up somewhere.  If it is, it hasn't been announced for any fest; so does that mean Telluride is possible?  Probably not.

My expectation is that if it shows up at all, it will be as the opening or closing or the capstone presentation of the New York Film Festival.

That being said, here's a small article/interview with Oscar Issac who plays the titular role in the film from The Hollywood Reporter:

Herzog Speaks/Fox Searchlight Has Shame/After Kevin/Noah!/Carey and Llewyn/20 Weeks to Oscar

Good Monday Morning (if such a thing is possible).  Just back from Santa Fe and a relaxing fall break.  This week is State One Act Play Contest (Saturday in Bixby, OK.  Bring it!)

HERZOG SPEAKS

Telluride regular, advisor and gadfly Werner Herzog is all over the interweb this past week as he ramps up for the end of year release of his death row documentary "Into the Abyss" which appeared as a part of this year's SHOW.  Herzog can be found holding forth in a couple of places over at IndieWire.

FOX SEARCHLIGHT HAS SHAME

Fox Searchlight continues to be very aggressive in its plans to push Steve McQueen's "Shame" as we get closer to the meat of Oscar (and other awards) seasons.  I have to admire their aggressiveness on behalf of a film that will be a tough sell.  Despite the glowing reviews (including mine) the almost certain NC-17 rating and the raw subject matter will make this an uphill slog.  That being said, FS is reportedly going to push for Fassbender and Mulligan in acting categories (as they should) as well as Best Pic, screenplay and director.  FS (as one of the blogs listed below has said) may be the best suited outfit to champion this film in light of last year's terrific effort for "Black Swan".

Here are a number of posts that reported this past week on Fox Searchlight's strategy.

AFTER "KEVIN"

"We Need to Talk About Kevin" writer/director Lynne Ramsay reportedly has her sights set on her next effort and it sounds, well...odd.  The Playlist (at indieWire) reported this week that Ramsay will adapt "Moby Dick".  Wait, I know that doesn't seem all that odd...here's the kicker...she will reportedly set the film in space...
"Moby Dick in Space"...really.  Take a look at the story form The Playlist:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/lynne_ramsays_next_film_is_a_science-fiction_take_on_moby_dick

NOAH!

News from here and there this week about Darren Aronofsky's "Noah" project (Aronofsky was at Telluride last year with the aforementioned "Black Swan").
The Playlist has some hints about what the film might look like based on graphic novel images.  find that here:

MORE LLWEYN DAVIS  (and I think it's exciting news)

Last week we reported that the Coen Brothers had found their actor for the title role in their low budget indie pic "Inside Llewyn Davis" based, at least to some extent, on Dave Van Ronk and the folk music scene in NYC in the early 60's.  That casting tidbit was Oscar Issac from (among other titles) "Drive".  Now The Playlist reports that the Coens have cast the female lead (and if you've seen "Drive", this may make your eyes cross a little) and that is Carey Mulligan.  Mulligan and Issac were husband and wife in "Drive".

Since her appearance in "An Education" my appreciation for Ms. Mulligan has grown and grown and, as many of you know, I'm all about her performance in "Shame".  So I am very excited to see what she and the Coens do together.

Here's a link to Carey Mulligan casting news via The Playlist:

Werner's New Gig/A Separation Hero?/Shame Has a Date/Le Havre on the Web/Close Honored/Not Really Telluride Related

Hope that everyone is having a good week and Good Morning on a Thursday.

WERNER MOONLIGHTING?

Word that Telluride regular and Board of Advisor member and TFF #38 presenter (Into the Abyss) Werner Herzog has a new gig.  He'll be acting.  With Tom Cruise.  As a villain.  Color me shocked?

Can't say that it's all that surprising.  Herzog has reportedly been cast in Chris McQuarrie's "One Shot" an adaptation of a Lee Child novel.

Anne Thompson(Thompson on Hollywood/indieWire) has the scoop:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/2011/10/04/inspired_casting_werner_herzog_will_play_villain_across_tom_cruise_in_mcqua/

A SEPARATION HERO?

I met Asghar Farhadi, the writer-director of "A Separation"briefly at this year's fest and what a quiet and unassuming man he seemed to be.  That sentiment is echoed by Steven Zeitchik at The Envelope from the L.A. Times in a nice piece about the Iranian director and the film, which has continued on from Telluride and has picked up some steam along the way.  It is Iran's entry for consideration for this year's Foreign Language Oscar.

Zeitchik's profile is here:
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/movies/2011/10/ashgar-panahi-iran-jafar-panahi-arrested-sentence-separation.html

SHAME HAS A DATE

Despite continuing concerns about its commercial viability, Steve McQueen's "Shame" now has a release date in the U.S. according to Fox Searchlight, which is distributing the film.  I still maintain that it was the Best Film of TFF #38 and that Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan deserve Oscar noms for their performances.  Details of "Shame's" release can be found via The Playlist (indieWire) here:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/2011/10/04/michael_fassbenders_penis_will_get_released_on_december_2nd_in_shame/

Further details are from Inside Pulse here:

LE HAVRE ON THE WEB

Janus Films has announced that it has an official website up and running for Finnish Oscar hopeful "Le Havre".  That can be found here:

CLOSE HONORED

"Albert Nobbs" star and likely Oscar nominee for Best Actress Glenn Close will be honored for her lifetime of work by The Hollywood Film Festival.  The Hollywood Reporter has the details:
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/glenn-close-receive-career-achievement-242976

NOT RELATED TO TELLURIDE BUT I FIND IT INTERESTING

Two trailers for films that didn't play at Telluride but figure to be strong players in the Oscar race.
First for Stephen Daldry's "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close".  I read the novel and thought parts were beautiful, parts were "precious" and some parts were derivative.  That said, the trailer looks ...well...great...Details and a link to the trailer from Get the Big Picture here:
http://www.getthebigpicture.net/blog/2011/9/30/extremely-loud-incredibly-close-trailer.html

And the new trailer for Steven Spielberg's "War Horse":
http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/dreamworks/warhorse/

And finally, I am now breathlessly awaiting this...The Coen Brothers do T.V.  Oh my.  Looking forward to "HarveKarbo"  News and details from The Playlist (indieWire) here;

The Past/The Future

THE PAST

A few notes about films that appeared last weekend at the 38th Telluride Film Festival:

"Shame" has a distributor and it is Fox Searchlight.  FS, you may remember, picked up "Tree of Life" after last year's SHOW.  Take a look at the details from The Huffington Post:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/10/shame-fox-searchlight-pic_n_956643.html

Shame's IMDb page:

MEANWHILE, THE FUTURE...

I always have hopes that The Coen Brothers will be at the next Telluride Film Festival.  The next project that they're putting together will, again, be on MTFB's watch list.  There has been a good deal of movement about the film which I talked a good deal about at the beginning of the summer but put on the back burner as the SHOW got closer and closer.  Now back to that obsession, at least for this post.

The film's title: "Inside Llewyn Davis."  Variety reports that Studio Canal is involved:
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118042021?categoryid=13&cs=1&cmpid=RSS|News|LatestNews&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

The Playlist has further details here:

More Coens Musical Info/Rudderless Producer/More Oscar Voting Detail

"The function of the artist is to make people like life better than they have before."
-Kurt Vonnegut
Is this the next Fargo?

COEN BROTHERS MUSICAL

I passed along last week that Joel and Ethan Coen had let slip that their next project might be heavily "musical" which sent me a on a toot last week as I reimagined some of their body of work as musical versions (including songs for "Raising Arizona," "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and "No Country for Old Men" among others; check some of last week's posts...I though they were kind of funny).  Now comes word this morning from The Playlist that the film is likely to focus on the emergence of the folk music scene circa 1960 or so in New York City.  Specifically on Dave Van Ronk.  Sounds very cool.
You can find the entire post here:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/the_coens_brothers_next_film_will_take_on_the_60s_new_york_city_folk_scene/

RUDDERLESS PRODUCER

I've been mentioning "Rudderless" the last two weeks or so in this space as that film wends its way through the thicket of development.  The film is set to be the directorial debut of Oscar nominated actor William H. Macy.  Word now is of the likely involvement of producer Tracee Stanley.  Stanley has a lengthy list of credits as a producer and executive producer including: "The Whole Nine Yards," "The Whole Ten Yards," "The Caveman's Valentine," "3000 Miles to Graceland," and the remake of "The In -Laws."
Her entire IMDB profile is here:

MORE OSCAR VOTING DETAILS

Last week The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced some changes for the upcoming Oscars.  The most notable had to do with altering the number of Best Picture nominees from a guaranteed 10 to anywhere between a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10.  Now comes a lengthy explanation of the new process that will be used from Brad Brevet at rope of Silicon (with detailed assistance from Steve Pond at The Wrap).  It won't surprise many of you to hear that the new process is labrynthical.
Here it is:

Have a great weekend everyone.  Back on Monday!

Anderson's"The Master" Caster/Weinstien's Oscar Play Dates/Barton Fink:The Musical

Early art for a poster for "The Master"

Just a couple of notes to pass along today.

NEW CAST MEMBERS FOR PT ANDERSON PROJECT

Variety reported last night additions to the cast for what apparently is now officially entitled "The Master," Paul Thomas Anderson's first film since 2007's brilliant "There Will Be Blood." (Best Film of the Aughts).
Already cast were Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams in the film that explores the genesis of a modern day belief system said to be not unlike Scientology.  Added cast members announced last night are Josh Close and Fiona Dourif.  The post from the PT Anderson fan site Cigarettes and Red Vines is here:
http://cigsandredvines.blogspot.com/2011/06/2-more-join-to-cast-film-now-officially.html

Various sources have it released in 2012 or 2013.  I'll be following it as I think it will be on the short list of Telluride possible films for TFF #39 or #40...
It's IMDB page is here:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1560747/

WEINSTEIN SETS RELEASE DATES

The Weinstein Company has established release dates for four films that it has and I expect will be pushed in various ways for Oscar success.  The four films: "The Artist," "The Iron Lady," "Coriolanus," and "My Week with Marilyn."  All four are on our Telluride watch list and,  according to the article from The Playlist, all four have dates that would accommodate a Telluride screening.  I would expect that 2 of the 4 will end up in the San Juans and that the most likely is "The Artist."  As to the other three...I'd bet one of them also shows at The SHOW, but at this point I don't have any feel for which of the three is the most likely.

Dangerous Method/More Reitman News/Tree of LOOOOOONG Life/Another Coen's Musical

Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin...The Cast of "Labor Day"?
Maybe I spoke too soon...

"A DANGEROUS METHOD" RECONSIDERED

Earlier this week, I all but wrote off the chances that we'd see David Cronenberg's study of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung starring Viggo Mortensen and Michael Fassbender as a part of the program at Telluride this year.  My thinking: Cronenberg's film is in place for a Venice unveiling and, acknowledging Cronenberg's Canadian roots, I expect that the film will be front and center at Toronto.  That, I assumed would probably be enough as far as the fall fests are concerned.
Until yesterday, that is...
Multiple sources reported a Sony Pictures Classics release saying that the specialty film house has nabbed the U.S. rights for the film.  I have included the link to the Kris Tapley/Incontention.com version of the story here:
http://incontention.com/2011/06/16/sony-classics-picks-up-cronenbergs-dangerous-method/#more-39932
That, alone, would have made me pause to reconsider my thinking as SPC has had a very good relationship with the Telluride Film Festival.  but there was more...
Tapley tweeted just a little while after posting the story the following:

Kristopher Tapley (@kristapley)
Can't wait to see Dangerous Method at Telluride. Surely it'll play peek-a-boo there (but maybe @guylodge will get a look in Venice first).

Well...
Now, I'm not saying that Tapley already has some inside dope, but...his guess is always going to be better than mine because he's wired in...so...put "A Dangerous Method" back on the list of possibles..
And, parenthetically, I'm really glad too, because this film is high on my list of Oscar contenders to see this year.

JASON REITMAN: BUSY DUDE.

Yesterday we had the story that Jason Reitman was positioning himself to direct "Labor Day" and was in pursuit of Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin to star (with various sources reporting the two stars participation at varying levels of certitude...[Weiner reference]).  A higher level of certitude came from Brad Brevet at Rope of Silicon this morning that Winslet and Brolin are on board, but (like me) less certitude that we'll actually see "Young Adult" at Telluride.  The link to the Brevet article is here:
 http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/article/winslet-brolin-join-jason-reitmans-labor-day
Now comes this nugget, again from a number of sources, that Reitman is about to become a script doctor.  He's expected to take a stab at working on the script for Steve Carell's "magician" film project tentatively titled "Burt Wonderstone."  I've included the link to the Hollywoodnews.com version of that story here:
http://www.hollywoodnews.com/2011/06/17/jason-reitman-hired-to-polish-steve-carell-comedy/
So sounds like Reitman will be very, very busy in what's left of 2011.

THE TREE OF LIIIIIIIIFFFFFE...
News from The Playlist this morning that Terrence Malick is STILL not done tinkering with "The Tree of Life."  The film, which we were talking about in terms of release and Oscar potential 2 years ago was the Cannes Palme D'Or winner last month and officially went into release on May 27th with the nationwide rollout continuing through June.  The Playlist post this morning says Malick wants to do a 6 hour version of the film.  Check the story at:

Jason Reitman News/Moneyball/Oscar Calculations and BIG LEBOWSKI:THE MUSICAL

Jason Reitman's next project: "Labor Day."  Will we see it Labor Day 2012?

Always looking ahead is where we start today...

JASON REITMAN'S NEXT PROJECT AFTER "YOUNG ADULT"

I'm obviously including Jason Reitman's "Young Adult" on the 2011 Tellruride Film Festival "probable" list.  After all, he's had such great success with "Juno" (4 Oscar noms including Picture and Director, Diablo Cody wins Original Screenplay, makes a bazillion dollars) and "Up in the Air" (6 Oscar Noms including Picture, Actor, Original Screenplay and Director) at TFF that I'd be goofy not to think it'll play this fall (though I'm not as sure of that as you might think).  Now, The Playlist is reporting this morning that Reitman's next project is set.  Entitled "Labor Day," The Playlist says that Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet are attached to star in the adaptation of the book by Joyce Maynard.  The link for The Playlist story is here:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/kate_winslet_josh_brolin_join_jason_reitmans_labor_day/
And, as I'm sure you've guessed...put it on our Telluride 2012 speculation list.

MORE MONEYBALL SCUTTLEBUTT
Bennett Miller's "Moneyball" has been on my radar as a Telluride film possibility for some time and with the peak at it via Entertainment Tonight that has happened this week, interest elsewhere has been heightened.  Jeffrey Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere is the latest to comment.  His take is here:
http://hollywood-elsewhere.com/2011/06/brad_and_jonah.php?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter&utm_term=Daily/Hourly+Hollywood+Meditation&utm_content=Opinion,+wisdom,+tin+foil,+attitude

OSCAR CLEARINGHOUSE...THE INCREDIBLY EARLY EDITION
Over this past week, I've tumbled across a couple of Oscar Best Picture predictions since we're about half way through the year.  I've started the process of compilation and put it together, because I'm a little crazy?  Herewith your early, early line on the Best Picture race with information drawn from Incontention.com, Scott Feinberg, Film Misery and The Envelope at the LA Times (and roughly using each sources top 20 or so and what I think are Telluride possibles in CAPS AND BOLD):

ON ALL FOUR LISTS: 9 films..."THE DESCENDANTS," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "Hugo Cabret," "THE IDES OF MARCH," "THE IRON LADY," "J. Edgar," "The Tree of Life," "War Horse," "YOUNG ADULT."

ON THREE OF THE LISTS: "CARNAGE," "MONEYBALL," "THE ARTIST," "EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE."

ON TWO OF THE LISTS: "Super 8," "We Bought a Zoo," Contagion," "Like Crazy," "TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY," " THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL."

ONE VOTE WONDERS: "50/50," "Harry Potter/Deathly Hallows #2," "CORIOLANUS," "DRIVE," "The Help," "Martha Marcy May Marlene," "Midnight in Paris," "One Day," "Take Shelter," and "THE WETTEST COUNTY IN THE WORLD."

And with yesterday's announcement from the Academy peeps, who knows how many Best Picture nominations we will ultimately see (somewhere between 5 and 1o under the new rules).

TODAY'S BROADWAY MUSICAL BASED ON A COEN BROTHERS FILM..."THE BIG LEBOWSKI: THE MUSICAL"
Hit songs will include: "Gutterball of Love," "Not on the Rug, Man," "I'm the Dude, Duder, Duderino," "You Want a Toe, I Can Get You a Toe," "Not on the Shabbos," and "Nihilists on Parade!"

How Many Nominations?/Moneyball/Rudderless/COENS MUSICAL #4

George Clooney and Ryan Gosling on the set of "The Ides of March" (thanks to thehollywoodstory.com)

A busy 24 hours in terms of news and such that may or does have a bearing on the Telluride Film Festival.

I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY BEST PICTURES THERE ARE!
First, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS...the Oscar people) announced in the middle of last night that beginning this year there will be between 5 and 10 Best Picture nominees.  For most of its existence the Academy had nominated 5 films each year.  Then the last two years, they have nominated 10 (they used to nominate more than 5 way back in the beginning days of Oscar as well).

Well, now, this year if will be at least 5, not more than 10 and could be any number of films in between.  So in a "down" year...(like 2008) maybe only 5 get nominated.  In a good year (like last year) maybe 7 or 8 or 9.  In a great year you might get 10.  Apparently it will all hinge of the percentage of first place votes a picture gets during the nominating process.  The threshold is going to be 5% if I'm reading their press release correctly.  You can read that release here:
http://www.oscars.org/press/pressreleases/2011/20110614a.html

Most critical reaction this morning seems generally positive, but it will make prognostication a bit trickier...

ANOTHER EARLY, EARLY OSCAR PREDICTION!
Next, The LA Times is out today with its list of 15 films it says are possible Oscar contenders.  That list and descriptions of the films are here:
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/awards/2011/06/oscars-preview-15-front-runners-for-best-picture.html
TFF#38 suspects on The Envelope's list are: "The Artist," "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," "Carnage," "The Descendants," "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," "The Ides of March," "The Iron Lady," and "Young Adult."
Also on their list that I don't realistically think will be at Telluride (and why):
"War Horse"-Spielberg doesn't need to festival and hasn't "Tellurided" (though his compadres Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall are both members of the festival's Board of Advisors and are frequently in Telluride for it).
"The Tree of Life"-Terrence Malick's film was released May 27.
"Like Crazy"-a Sundance Festival hit...which almost totally precludes it (though not 100%- "An Education" played both Sundance then Telluride, but it's unlikely).
"J. Edgar"-Clint Eastwood's biopic about the former FBI director starring Leonardo DiCaprio. It's been a long time since Clint has been to Telluride and he doesn't need to "festival" for people to pay attention to this film.
"Hugo Cabret"-Martin Scorsese also doesn't need the T-ride exposure..and it's in 3D...which I'm guessing is not something that Telluirde has prepared technically to project.
"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"-Despite the fact that director David Fincher was a tributee in 2008, I have to doubt that he'll return with this American adaptation of the Swedish phenomena..if he didn't pop "The Social Network" at Telluride, I have a difficult time believing he'd bring "Tattoo" to the San Juans.
"A Dangerous Method"-David Cronenberg's film about Freud and Jung starring Viggo Mortensen and Michael Fassbender.  I believe Cronenberg will play Venice and Toronto and be happy with that (despite Viggo being a Tributee in 2009).

MONEYBALL!
One film NOT on the LA Times Envelope list today is Bennett Miller's "Moneyball."  I think it has a shot to play at Telluride because it IS Bennett Miller's first feature since "Capote" which was at Telluride in 2005.  The Playlist has a nice story about its trails and tribulations and a set of clips shown on last night's Entertainment Tonight...here that is:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/watch_first_brief_clips_from_moneyball_starring_brad_pitt_jonah_hill/

RUDDERLESS!
Yesterday we teased our minuscule connection to the film "Rudderless."  We already know that William H. Macy is set to direct, but perusing the IMDB entry we also find that casting director and music supervisor (and the music is crucial to the film) are signed on as well.  Casting is in the hands of Ronnie Yeskel whose previous credits include: "Reservoir Dogs," "Pulp Fiction," and "The Long Kiss Goodnight" among others.  The music supervisor is Debra Baum who has been involved with the music for "The Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood," "A Walk to Remember," and "3000 Miles to Graceland' again among others.

COENS BROTHERS MUSICALS CONTINUE...
Despite the fact that I'm pretty sure most of you are tired of the joke...it's till making me laugh, so, with apologies...as you are now  aware the next Coen Brothers film may be a musical.  I've had some fun this week with suggesting that we go back over the Coen canon and re-make all their films as musicals...today's example: "Burn After Reading: The Musical" featuring such hit tunes as: "Intelligence is Relative,"  "Raw Data," "Osborne Cox:Secret Agent Man" and "I Did Not See That Coming."

AND FINALLY...
The Playlist has an article about David Lynch and his opening a "Mullholland Drive" based theme night spot in Paris...and what they think would be a better use of Lynch's time.  It's kind of funny.  Here's the link:

A New Gig for Salman/More Coen's Musicals

Potential TV mogul Salman Rushdie???

One of the cooler things that happens at the Telluride Film Festival is that you actually have the opportunity to meet and interact with many of the people that are there as a part of the festival.  I've, unbelievably, had real conversations with Oscar nominee Laura Linney, film critic Leonard Maltin, documentarian Ken Burns among others.  One of those others was award winning author Salman Rushdie (he of "Satanic Verses" fame and the survivor of an Iranian Ayatollah's fatwa).  Rushdie is a member of the Telluride Film Festival's Board of Advisors, so he's there most years.  We talked about the film he was introducing in 2008, Nadita Das' "Firaaq."

All this preamble is to get to the story we found today on Anne Thompson's "Thompson on Hollywood" blog today..that Rushdie is going to be producing a television program for American television.  Called "The Next People," Thompson reports that its headed for Showtime and will be a science fiction series.  So how about that?  I don't know if you've ever read any of Rushdie's work, but if the series is remotely in the mode of his literature...it will be challenging.

You can find Thompson's complete article here:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/2011/06/13/in_the_works_june_13/

Incidentally, Thompson (with whom I've also had a conversation in Telluride) also seconds The Playlist story from yesterday concerning the Coen Brothers next project being a musical or heavily musically oriented. Today's thought: "Fargo: The Musical"  featuring such musical numbers as "Three Dead in Brainerd," "Lundegaard's Lament," and "The Wood Chipper's Waltz."

And finally, tomorrow I'm going to start talking about a new film that's currently in development.  A film that I know some scuttlebutt about because of...(you guessed it) the Telluride Film Fesival.

Four Weeks To Go!

WILL JAVIER BARDEM MAKE AN APPEARANCE AT THE FRIDAY NIGHT FEED ON COLORADO AVENUE???

With less than four weeks until the Patron's Brunch starts the weekend off for me, I thought I'd take a moment to assess where we are in terms of speculation about the films that will be playing at TFF #37. I've tired to divide these into categories that seem to make the most sense (at least to me) with almost a month to go before films begin to unspool...

The following is based on what has been speculated in the media, past trends, the Toronto and Venice listed films, Cannes results and wishful thinking. Take it for what it's worth (which probably isn't all that much).

Films that are I think have the best chance of being at Telluride: "Black Swan," Another Year," "127 Hours," "Miral," "Biutiful," and "Love and Other Drugs"

Sony Classics Films that likely will show: "Inside Job, " "Tamara Drewe," Of Gods and Men," and "Life Above All."

Other Cannes Films that could appear: "Certified Copy," "Poetry," and "On Tour"

Some films that have had very flimsy hints that they could show up in Telluride: "The King's Speech," "The Town, " and "Meek's Cutoff."

You have to figure Werner Herzog will be represented by either "The Cave of Forgotten Dreams" or "Happy People: A Year in the Tiaga" or both.

The "It Seems There Is No Way They'll Be In Telluride" List: (for a variety of reasons) "The Tempest," "The Social Network," The Eagle," "The Descendents," and "The Fighter."

Films about which there has been no mention in terms of Telluride, but could sneak in: "Bagman" (formerly "Casino Jack"), "Conviction" (formerly "Betty Ann Waters"), "Never Let Me Go," "Brighton Rock," Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives"(Palme D'Or winner), "Fair Game," "Somewhere," and "Blue Valentine."

Another interesting thought...last year at TFF #36, one of the biggest buzz generators was the Red Riding Trilogy...maybe the best buzz of anything from last year's fest. Could the TFF planners try something like that again? Does anything fit the bill? Yes and Yes. The sprawling "Carlos" (300 plus minutes according to imdb) which showed at Cannes and was very well received would seem to fit if the Telluride programmers wanted to go in that direction again. It certainly worked very well last year.

And finally...don't expect to see:

"True Grit"...the Coen Brothers certainly don't need to show at Telluride.

"Hereafter" neither does Clint Eastwood.

and "The Tree of Life"...enough people have said that Malick isn't ready to make me a believer...but you had to hope.

Toronto Begins Announcing...What Does It Mean?

Sean Penn and Naomi Watts in Doug Liman's "Fair Game" Coming to Telluride???

The 35th Toronto International Film Festival has begun announcing their lineup for this year. TIFF usually has a substantial lineup overlap with Telluride.

You can find Anne Thompson's post regarding the announcement today at this link:

So, almost certainly you can peruse this list and see some titles that will almost certainly be at Telluride. Some "suspects" included on the Toronto list that we've been following for a good long time include: Another Year, Biutiful, Miral, Tamara Drewe, Conviction, Brighton Rock, The Town, The King's Speech, and Casino Jack (Bagman). Maybe Blue Valentine...from Sundance...

Some "suspects" that weren't announced for Toronto on the initial list: Fair Game, Tree of Life, True Grit, 127 Hours, Love and Other Drugs, The Way Back and The Descendents.

Venice/Toronto Speculation

The Cast of the Coen Brothers version of True Grit
Indie Wire has a post up with 40 films that they say have a shot at either/or Venice and Toronto. You have to also figure a chunk of them end up in Telluride...

Here's the link:

On the list that we'd love to see in Colorado in 5 weeks: 127 Hours, Miral, Hereafter, The Tree of Life, True Grit, The Tempest, The Fighter, and The Way Back...

Uncle Boonmee...Maybe Not

Another pic from "Uncle Boonmee." He can remember his past lives, but he may not know how to get to Telluride!

In Contention.Com reports that Strand Releasing has picked up the distribution for Cannes Palme D'Or winner "Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives". That actually may portend a decrease in the chances that it will unspool in Telluride in 8 weeks.

It's not absolute, but the last Strand film I saw listed at a TFF was 2005's Lemming.

And Telluride doesn't always program the Palme winner. Cannes winner from 2008, "The Class" didn't play...sooo...maybe no Boonmee in the San Juans.

In other news...SPC has picked up "Life, Above All" which created a good deal of stir at Cannes. It was generally well received critically (earning a collective "B" average). This probably increases its chance of being a part of TFF #37. SPC also has "Inside Job" and "Of Gods and Men" making them prime suspects for Telluride inclusion.

Lots of quiet surrounding the following: "True Grit," "The Tempest, " "Love and Other Drugs," "Miral," "Biutiful," "The Social Network," "The Descendants," "Eagle of the Ninth," "Conviction," "Brighton Rock," Howl, " and "127 Hours." So keep them hanging around in the "maybe" column.

Also, not much recently about Malick's "Tree of Life." There had been a good deal of back and forth about its readiness prior to a speculated appearance as a part of the Venice Film Fest...included in that has been some spirited disagreement as to whether Venice is the target or not. As we have said here before, Venice inclusion doesn't automatically mean that a film won't play Telluride ("Life During Wartime" and "The Road" did both last year)...it's just that the overlap between these two festivals is very small.
