The Distributors 2019: Many a Firm Final Part / Telluride and Oscar Part Two: Best Director / An Assist from a Friend

Hello to everyone on this Tuesday.  How's your July so far?

THE DISTRIBUTORS 2019; MANY A SMALL FIRM-FINAL PART

-BLEECKER STREET MEDIA

Bleecker Street's Telluride bona fides are barely existent but they have a film that is in post-production that could be in line to make the grade for The SHOW this year.  Sally Potter's Molly is currently listed as a 2020 release but...it has reportedly been in post-production since February.

Potter has some Telluride cred having screened her Yes there in 2004 and Ginger and Rosa in 2012 (with Molly star Elle Fanning in that cast).  Additionally, frequent Telluride guest/participant/resident Laura Linney is also featured in the cast.

-MUSIC BOX FILMS

Francois Ozon could return to Telluride via Music Box with By the Grace of God.  Ozon screened Frantz at Telluride in 2016 (also distributed by Music Box).  Adding a bit of fuel to the fire was the film's win of Berlin;s Silver Bear award in February.

Chances for each film-

Molly 35% (would be higher if it was scheduled as a 2019 release)
By the Grace of God 35%

TELLURIDE AND OSCAR PART TWO: BEST DIRECTOR

Picking up where I left off yesterday, I'm continuing an eight part series of articles tracing the connection between films that have played Telluride's Film Fest and the eight "major" Oscar categories.

Yesterday I looked at T-ride and the Best Picture nominees from the past 14 years.  Today it's the directors.  Here are the directors that played films at TFF since 2005 who were Oscar nominated.  Additionally, if that director won it is indicated with ***.

2005: Ang Lee/Brokeback Mountain***, Bennett Miller/Capote
2006: Alejandro Inarritu/Babel
2007: Jason Reitman/Juno, Julian Schnabel/The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Paul Thomas Anderson/There Will Be Blood (I count this and Benjamin Button even though we only saw a portion of each film in tributes to Daniel Day Lewis and David Fincher)
2008: Danny Boyle/Slumdog Millionaire***, David Fincher/The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
2009: Jason Reitman/Up in the Air
2010: Tom Hooper/The King's Speech*** Darren Aronofsky/Black Swan.
2011: Michel Hazanavicius/The Artist***, Alexander Payne/The Descendents
2012: Michael Haneke/Amour
2013: Alfonso Cuaron/Gravity***, Steve McQueen/12 Years a Slave, Alexander Payne/Nebraska
2014: Alejandro Inarritu/Birdman***, Morton Tyldum/The Imitation Game, Bennett Miller/Foxcatcher
2015: Tom McCarthy/Spotlight, Lenny Abrahamson/Room
2016: Damian Chazelle/La La Land***, Barry Jenkins/Moonlight, Denis Villeneuve/Arrival, Kenneth Lonergan/Manchester by the Sea
2017: Guillermo Del Toro/The Shape of Water***, Greta Gerwig/Lady Bird
2018: Alfonso Cuaron/Roma***, Pawel Pawlikowski/Cold War, Yorgos Lanthimos/The Favourite

Over these 14 years 31 Best Directing nominations have landed with films that screened as a part of TFF with nine wins.

A couple of notes:

2016 was insane with four of the five nominees having come from Telluride films.  The only nominee that year not from a TFF film: Adam McKay for The Big Short

It's good to be one of "The Three Amigos".  The three Mexican directors who have been labeled with this sobriquet: Inarritu, Cuaron and Del Toro account for four of the nine wins. Cuaron twice.  Inarritu has a second directing Oscar for The Revenant which, of course, did not screen at Telluride.

Thursday I'll take a glance at Best Actress nominees from TFF since 2005.

AND AN ASSIST FROM A FRIEND

I am always appreciative when one of the people I have become friends with that are actual journalists have the kindness to reference the blog.  I always see a bump in traffic when something that happens.

With last Friday's first "Ten Bets" for TFF #46 I got a great assist from my friend Sasha Stone at Awards Daily.  Sasha linked the Ten Bets and offered some of her views/analysis.

I also think she sort of promised that I could meet Tom Hanks if he's at the fest with A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.  At least that's what I'm choosing to believe.

Here's the link to her Awards Daily story that's about Friday's post.

Going to wrap this up for today.  More to come on Thursday.

Day One in the Books / Day Two and the Plan / TBAs for Saturday

It's Saturday and Day Two of the 43rd Telluride Film Festival.

DAY ONE IN THE BOOKS

Patron Brunch yesterday was great.  Ate with good friends and made some new ones.  Mark Helfrich was kind enough to introduce me to one of this year's tribute recipients: Casey Affleck:

After that I made a quick stop to the Press Orientation where probably the most important news was that there are no planned "Sneaks" for this year.

Following that I made my way up to the Chuck Jones for the Patron screening of Damien Chazelle's La La Land.  I'll admit that a built from scratch movie musical has had me dubious but it won me over.  Great work from Ryan Gosling and particularly Emma Stone.  If anyone runs into Emma this weekend...pass it on MTFB thinks she's fantastic in this.  Also, tell her that I'd like to meet her too.

Grabbed a quick kabob at the Opening Night Feed and then attended the tribute to Casey Affleck followed by a screening of Manchester by the Sea.  This title has had a lot of buzz since it popped at Sundance back in January.  Honestly I found it overly long.  It just seemed like the first act was really lethargic.  That perception wasn't aided by the fact that The Palm was a sauna.

The last half hour or so is well done.  Michelle Williams is quite good and Affleck is as well.  Also young actor Lucas Hedges hangs with the adults admirably.

Final note about the film: the music was overbearing to the point of distraction.

Overall for the moment MTFB says La La Land 4/5 and Manchester 2.5/5

For those whose minds run to such things, my guess is that La La Land will likely be a big hit thus weekend and consequently make some fairly serious noise when the talk turns to Oscar.  Score, Song, possibly the Sound Editing and Mixing categories.  Maybe Picture, Director, Actress, Original Screenplay, Cinematography and Film Editing.  Gosling could Squeeze in for Actor but that's going to be a tougher sell.

Manchester's Affleck and Williams have been getting mentioned for Actor and Supporting Actress since Sundance but...Best bets, at least in my view are a nod for Williams and an Original Screenplay nod for Kenneth Lonergan.  Affleck could get in but, like Gosling, the competition is probably going to be brutal.

I'll be interested to hear what some of the real Oscar pundits have to say.

DAY TWO AND THE PLAN

This is what I think I'll be doing tomorrow:

Sully/Palm @10am
Bright Lights/Palm @1pm
Moonlight/Galaxy @4:30pm
Amy Adams Tribute w/Arrival/Palm @7pm

TBA'S FOR SATURDAY:

I'm taking these TBAs from what is appearing on the TFF #43 App as of late last night:

By Venue:

The Galaxy:
1:15 Manchester by the Sea
7:45 Arrival

The Zog
1:00 Wakefield
4:00 The Eagle Huntress
10:00 Lost in Paris

The Masons
3:00 Things to Come
8:00 Great Expectations
10:30 End of Eden

Le Pierre
8:15pm Fire at Sea
10:30pm Maudie

FINALLY...

A big thanks to those of you who have been passing along the kind words about reading this space. It really does mean more than you know.

MTFB in Other Places / Journey Through French Film / Eight Days a Week Spec / Some Sully Buzz / Follow and Rate

Welcome back from the weekend to this Monday in late August.  It's less than two weeks to TFF #43 and the anticipation is building.

MTFB IN OTHER PLACES

I ran across a mention of likely Telluride films in a couple of places yesterday.  The first was Mind of a Suspicious Kind by Jordan Ruimy.  I looked up the post and found that it contained a list of 20 films probable for Telluride.  That list is film for film the same as last Friday's Ten (Plus) Bets with the only difference being that this list was alphabetized.   Ruimy says at the top of the post that the info had come from "from a usually reliable source".

Then last night, Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere posted the same list with a link to MTFB.  Seems that Ruimy is Well's guest on the next version of his Oscar Podcast.

I have three takeaways.  1) It feels to me that MTFB is probably the origin of the list that they're working from. 2) The Wells post makes it seem clear that the latest Ten (Plus) Bets is relatively accurate and 3) as per Wells post it appears that there is at least "one major American film that is definitely going" to Telluride (per Wells' source) that is NOT mentioned on any version of the list. That's exciting and makes me wonder if that "major American film" might be Sully (more about that below) or the Venice-announced film that I alluded to in my post last Friday under the heading "Whispers and Whispers".

That's intriguing.

Here are links to both the Hollywood Elsewhere and Mind of a Suspicious Kind posts from yesterday:

JOURNEY THROUGH FRENCH FILM

(photo from Indiewire)

Over the weekend we discovered that Bertrand Tavernier's massive (190 min.)  Journey Through French Cinema will be featured at the New York Film Festival.  The retrospective of the history of French film is something that I feel moderately confident will get a try out in the San Juans over the Labor Day weekend before Tavernier tackles it in New York in October.  Journey Through French Cinema sat at #20 in last week's Ten (Plus) Bets for TFF #43.

Here's the story of its inclusion for NYFF from Indiewire:

http://www.indiewire.com/2016/08/nyff-2016-retrospective-bertrand-tavernier-my-journey-through-french-cinema-1201718505/

EIGHT DAYS A WEEK SPEC

I have speculated, suggested, campaigned...choose your verb...on behalf of the possible inclusion of Ron Howard's Beatles documentary Eight Days a Week: The Touring Years as a part of Telluride's lineup for this year.

I have mentioned that there are circumstantial indicators that indicate that it is at least possible.  The film's release date comes a couple of weeks after Telluride.  The streaming service Hulu, which has the rights to the film, has partnered with distributor Abramorama for a theatrical release on Sept. 16. Hulu is scheduled to begin streaming the film the following day.  Abramorama has been involved at Telluride in recent years with two films on the TFF #42 slate last year: Time to Choose and Heart of a Dog.  They also had Particle Fever at TFF in 2013; so there is some historical precedent in as far as the distributor is concerned.

For a awhile, I thought that Eight Days a Week might be the special addition to the Venice lineup that Venice Film Fest head man Alberto Barbera hinted might be coming when that fest announced its lineup at the end of July but that hasn't materialized.

Nevertheless, I can hope.  Added to that hope was this post from Jeffrey Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere in which he asks the question about the possibility of a Telluride screening but also admits that he has no inside information that would lead him to believe that it will happen.  There's just the implication that, like me, he'd like to see the film pop at T-ride in a few days.

Here's the H.E. post:

http://www.hollywood-elsewhere.com/2016/08/and-howards-beatles-doc-will-be-screened/

SOME SULLY BUZZ

I mentioned in last Friday's post that there had been some increasing chatter about the possibility of Clint Eastwood's Sully starring Tom Hanks as the true life hero of the Miracle on the Hudson (Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger).  I wrote then that I was still "dubious" about the chances that it would play TFF #43.

There ARE reasons to think that it COULD happen.  The film is from Warner Bros. and, as I have written repeatedly this summer, WB has been a fairly common player at Telluride over the past four years.  Telluride regular Laura Linney has a substantial role in the film as Sully's wife Lorraine and though the window is tight in terms of the release of the film (Sept. 9), it's possible.  Eastwood himself is a past T-ride tribute recipient in 1990 and was guest again in 1998.

All that to get to this...the buzz for a Sully screening grew somewhat over the weekend.  It's not that anyone is actually saying, "Hey, Sully will be at Telluride", but I'm still hearing that people are "hearing" that it might play Telluride.

Bottom line, it seems a little more possible today than it did Friday.

Additionally, we got a new trailer for Sully over the weekend.  Here it is from YouTube:

I've also included Alex Billington's/FirstShowing.net story about the release of the second trailer:

The Usual Suspects Part Two/"The Revenant" News/The Guardian on the Fall Season

Welcome to Wednesday film fans...

THE "USUAL SUSPECTS" PART TWO

I'm continuing my metaphorical stroll through some of the directors, producers and others who seem to have a personal and frequent connection to Telluride to parse their participation to see if there are clues for the TFF #42 lineup.

Today we start with actress Laura Linney.

Linney hasn't appeared at the fest since 2012's "Hyde Park on Hudson".  For a good long while I thought she'd be back this year with Bill Conden's "Mr. Holmes" starring Sir Ian McKellen.  Then, some months ago, Fox Searchlight dated the film for a July release (it opened last weekend).

But fear not Linney fans, she's still in the TFF #42 possibility game as she appears also in Michael Grandage's "Genius" which is in the Lionsgate stable.  The film was listed by IMDb as being in post-production in February.  The film also stars Nicole Kidman, Jude Law and Colin Firth (TFF tribute 2010). Grandage is a first time director.

Our next "Usual Suspect" for today's post is Stephen Frears.  Frears is an interesting case.  He hasn't had a film at the fest since 2010's "Tamara Drewe" but was reportedly supposed to have had "Philomena" sneak in 2013 only to have it pulled at the last minute (The Weinstein Company replaced it with "Salinger").  Another story that I heard was that Frears was approached to be Guest Director for the 2013 fest but couldn't due to other obligations.

If all that's true, then Frears still is in the Telluride orbit.  His current project that could make the grade for TFF #42 is his long gestating Lance Armstrong examination "The Program" starring Ben Foster as Armstrong and Chris O'Dowd as the journalist who kept after the allegations of doping that eventually caught up to the multiple Tour de France winner.  The film is currently without U.S. distribution.

Number three on today's look at "Usual Suspects" is Wim Wenders. Wenders has been coming to Telluride since 1978 and has played there with "Paris, Texas", "Faraway, So Close", "Pina" and last year with "Salt of the Earth"  This year he has a feature film called "Every Thing Will Be Fine" that stars James Franco and has played the Berlin Fest.  The film wasn't received all that warmly in a critical sense, but Wenders past connection with Telluride might be enough to get the film into the lineup.  The film's U.S. distribution is still up for grabs.

Our final "Usual" for this Wednesday are the Dardenne Brothers.  Now, I can hear some of you saying, "Wait, Michael.  The Dardenne don't have a film in the can."  And you're right.  But they do act as producers on a film that may have some Telluride legs:  Benoit Jacqout's "Diary of a Chambermaid" which stars Lea Seydoux (who made the trip to Telluride in 2013 with "Blue is the Warmest Color").  "Chambermaid" played Berlin in February and a couple of other fests and has U.S. distribution from the Cohen Media Group.  That distributor was last represented in Telluride in 2012 with "The Attack".

These factors might edge the film into the T-ride lineup.

So, in review, your chances for each of these four (five, if you count both Dardennes) "Usual Suspects" and their projects:

Linney/"Genius" 30%
Frears/"The Program" 35%
Wenders/"Every Thing Will Be Fine" 30%
Dardennes/"Diary of a Chambermaid" 20%

Tomorrow's "Usual Suspects" will be a little different as I'll look at two directors who are close to being "Usuals' as well as three fellows that are "Usuals" that would be doing something unusual if they were to come to this year's SHOW: Ariel Vromen, Matteo Garrone, Steve McQueen, Alejandro Inarritu and Francis Ford Coppola.

 "THE REVENANT" NEWS...

Alejandro Inarritu's "The Revenant" moved up on my wish list this past weekend with the release of a fantastic teaser/trailer.  Admittedly, the film isn't going to be ready in time for Telluride as word is that the crew is re-shooting a sequence in South America (where it is winter).  I have mentioned that I have some serious concern whether it will be ready TO go by its stated Dec. 25th release date.

Adding some fuel to that concern was a weekend tweet from The Playlist that asked if Fox was really likely to release both "The Revenant" and David O. Russell's "Joy" on the same date, as is now what is announced.

As if in answer to these concerns, Jeff Well/Hollywood Elsewhere posted late Monday night a piece concerning the re-shoot plans and timing based on a translated version of an interview with Inarritu. The good news, the post suggests that the film will be done earlier than thought.  The bad news, still not early enough to make it to Telluride.  Wells extrapolation suggests that it could be finished by late September/early October.  AFI Fest perhaps?

Here's the link to the Wells post:

http://www.hollywood-elsewhere.com/2015/07/revenant-will-actually-ready-sooner/

In other "Revenant" news, Chris Connelley was up yesterday at Grantland with a big piece on the film and interviews with DiCaprio and Inarritu.  If you're excited about the film, as I am, it's worth a read:

http://grantland.com/features/exclusive-leonardo-dicaprio-and-alejandro-g-inarritu-on-the-revenant/

Additionally, I have linked this Rope of Silicon story about cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki's interview about the difficulties in making the film here:

http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/emmanuel-lubezki-talks-shooting-the-revenant-and-frozen-monitors/

THE GUARDIAN ON THE FALL SEASON

The Guardian's Nigel M. Smith posted his take on 40 films that he feels have the most serious Oscar potential late yesterday.  Included in the assessment of each of the 40 films, if they haven't already appeared at Cannes, are his guesses about where the films might show up in the fall festival lineup, including a number of Telluride guesses.  They include:

"Adam Jones" Dir: John Wells.  Stars Bradley Cooper.  Distrib: The Weinstein Company.  Release Date: Oct. 2.

"Black Mass" Dir: Scott Cooper. Stars: Johnny Depp, Benedict Cumberbatch. Distrib: Warners.  Release date: Sept. 18. (Parenthetical note...please let this be true...and the smoke is gathering that it might be).

"The Danish Girl" Dir: Tom Hooper.  Stars: Eddie Redmayne, Alicia Vikander. Distrib: Focus Features.  Release date: Nov. 27.

"Everybody Wants Some" Dir: Richard Linklater. Stars: Tyler Hoechlin. Distrib: Paramount Pictures.  Release date: TBD.

"Freeheld" Dir: Peter Sollett.  Stars: Julianne Moore, Ellen Page. Distrib: Lionsgate. Release date: Oct. 2.

"I Saw the Light" Dir: Marc Abraham.  Stars: Tom Hiddleston, Elizabeth Olsen. Distrib. Sony Pictures Classics. Release date: Nov. 27.

"The Light Between Oceans" Dir: Derek Cianfrance.  Stars: Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander.  Distrib: TDB.  Release date: TBD.

"Manchester-by-the -Sea" Dir. Kenneth Lonergan.  Stars: Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams.  Distrib: TBD.  Release date: TBD (but perhaps 2016).

"The Program" Dir: Stephen Frears.  Stars: Ben Foster, Chris O'Dowd.  Distrib: TBD.  Release dates: TBD.

"Suffragette" Dir: Sarah Gavron.  Stars: Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter.  Distrib: Focus Features.  Release date: Oct. 23.

"Truth" Dir: James Vanderbilt.  Stars: Robert Redford, Cate Blanchett.  Distrib: Sony Pictures Classics. Release date: TBD.

Among the Cannes debuts that Smith mentions that I feel have some shot at playing at Telluride are:

"Carol", "Son of Saul", "Macbeth" and "Youth"

And the films that Smith pegs as possible plays for Venice that I feel are also possible for T-ride:

"A Bigger Splash", "A Hologram for the King", "Our Brand is Crisis".

Other films that Smith includes in the list of 40 that might have Telluride legs would be "Steve Jobs".

Berlin Adds Titles/Looks at the Queen and Holmes/Yet More Lists to Contemplate/Wither Warner Brothers?/Rudderless Is Arriving

Welcome to Monday!

There WAS other news that had some Telluride Film Festival interest this last week in addition to the phenomenal 33 (35 counting TFF #40's "Ida") Oscar nominations for Telluride titles; 22 between "Birdman", "The Imitation Game" and "Foxcatcher".  So, I thought it'd be a good idea to peruse some of those developments/stories...

BERLIN ADDS TITLES

The Berlin International Film Festival added competition titles this week.  At least two of them immediately caught my eye.  Werner Herzog's "Queen of the Desert" with Nicole Kidman and Bill Condon's "Mr. Holmes" with Sir Ian McKellan and Laura Linney were announced in that group of titles.

As I have pointed out, we usually see a title or two that premieres at Berlin at Telluride.  To my thinking, and unless the film's respective distributors have some other plan for general release, these two films would be serious contenders to make the Berlin/Telluride play. "Queen of the Desert" has no distributor as yet and "Mr. Holmes" is with Roadside Attractions which ran "'71" through Berlin then Telluride last year.  Roadside also had Tommy Lee Jones "The Homesman" at Telluride as well.  Roadside also had "All is Lost" and "Gloria" in TFF #40.

Considering Herzog's strong ties to Telluride and Condon's occasional presence there (Condon's "Kinsey" with Linney played in 2004) as well as Laura Linney's frequent connection to the fest, means that both films would seem to be very real T-ride possibilities.

This all assumes that both films meet the exacting standards of the Telluride programmers.

Here's the post from IndieWire about the new Berlin titles:

http://www.indiewire.com/article/berlin-adds-competition-titles-from-werner-herzog-jafar-panahi-and-bill-condon-20150114

LOOKS AT THE "QUEEN" AND "HOLMES"

"Mr. Holmes" via Sir Ian McKellan's Twitter account

With the announcement of the addition of "Queen of the Desert" and "Mr. Holmes" we saw some posts this week with images for the two films:

Check more of the shots from "Queen" from either The Playlist or Thompson on Hollywood here:

YET MORE LISTS TO CONTEMPLATE

I continue to collect and analyze various "Most Anticipated" lists for 2015 in an effort to identify what films are coming down the pike that could make an appearance over Labor Day weekend.  I've got three more to eyeball in today's post:

First, IndieWire's 40 Indie Films they're "Most Excited" to see in 2015:

Possible Telluride titles from this list:

"A Hologram for the King"
"Carol"
"Macbeth"
"Queen of the Desert"
"Southpaw"
"Suffragette"
"The Hateful Eight"
"The Revenant"
"The Tale of Tales"

Then, Ioncinema's 25 Most Anticipated Studio Films of 2015:

Among the films they list, those that would seem to have some Telluride potential are:

#3 "The Light Between the Oceans"
#4 "The Hateful Eight"
#5 "The Revenant"
#6 "Our Brand is Crisis"
#8 "Sicario"
#9 "Macbeth"
#20 "Truth"
#25 "Mr. Holmes"

And from The Playlist: The 20 Most Anticipated Foreign Films:

And from that list, here's what stands out as early Telluride potentials:

#7 "Erran"'
#5 "Every Thing Will Be Fine"
#3 "La blessure"
#1 "Flashmob"

WITHER WARNER BROTHERS?

Warners announced this past week that the Ron Howard film "In the Heart of the Sea" was being moved from a spring date to December.  Along with the announcement came a good deal of speculation as to why Warners had made the decision with positioning for an awards season run being a common theory.  Of course, from my perspective, it made the film go from "can't play Telluride if it's released in March" to "December makes it a possibility".

http://variety.com/2015/film/news/warner-bros-moves-ron-howards-in-the-heart-of-the-sea-to-christmas-1201405354/

I've already mentioned that I believe that Warners may press to return to Telluride after a noticeable presence in 2012 ("Argo")  and again in 2013 ("Gravity" and "Prisoners").  Warners wasn't in T-ride this year and that may be that their two biggest possible players: "American Sniper"  and "Inherent Vice" couldn't be ready in time or just preferred not to be a part of Telluride...or that Telluride didn't prefer those films.  Nevertheless, I wouldn't be surprised for Warners to be back at Telluride this year and they have a number of prospects that could make the lineup including the newly moved Ron Howard film "In the Heart of the Sea".  Other possibilities (meaning that they are films that have an announced released date post-Labor Day):

Jeff Nichols "Midnight Special" (Release: Nov. 25)
Scott Cooper's "Black Mass" (Release: Sept. 18)
and now
Ron Howard's "In the Heart of the Sea" (Release: Dec. 11)

At this point, I don't have a sense that any one of these films is more likely than the others.  I'd probably lean to starring "Black Mass" if it weren't for the release date opening less than two weeks after the close of the festival.  So let's leave it at..."Warners might be back with one or more of these films".

RUDDERLESS IS ARRIVING

William H. Macy's Oklahoma shot and written directing debut "Rudderless" arrives on DVD and BluRay tomorrow.   Seek it!

The Usual Suspects 2014 Part Three/Crave Online Takes a Stab/"Gone" to NYC/Coming Attractions: Mr. Holmes?

Good Thursday everyone...

Today I'm almost concluding my "Usual Suspects" rundown as it relates to TFF #41.  In parts one and two I looked at the prospects of "Usuals": Herzog, Burns, Payne, Cousins, Morris, Inarritu, Leigh, the Dardennes and Assayas.  Six more today and a small addendum for tomorrow.

THE USUAL SUSPECTS 2014 PART THREE

Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach in Telluride in 2012 (photo via Kristy Patterson)

Today we start with Noah Baumbach.  Baumbach is interesting "Usual Suspect" this year as he may...and I stress "may", have two potential projects that could play the fest.  Baumbach's past with Telluride includes "Margot at the Wedding" in 2007 and his collaboration with Greta Gerwig in 2012, "Frances Ha".

Baumbach has collaborated again with Ms. Gerwig in what is still being referenced as "Untitled Public School Project".  IMDb lists it as being in post-production as of late April.  If you'll recall, however, "Frances Ha" was similarly under-the-radar when it appeared at Telluride two years ago.

The other Baumbach project seems to be farther along and more is known about it.  Entitled "While We're Young" it stars Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts and Amanda Seyfried.  It is also listed by IMDb as being in post as of late February.

My expectation is that one of these two films play Telluride.  Each would have its merits.  I love me some Greta Gerwig, loved "Frances Ha" and am curious about what she and Baumbach might have cooked up. On the other hand,  the inclusion of "While We're Young" might also get Ben Stiller in town on Labor Day weekend and I would add him to my currently imaginary panel of comic actors working serious that at the moment would include Michaell Keaton from Inarritu's "Birdman" and Steve Carell from Miller's "Foxcatcher".

Again, I'll bet one if not both Baumbach's play.

Stephen Frears...if reports are to be believed, and I do believe them, was supposed to have been a late addition to Telluride last year with "Philomena".  That didn't work out.  There was even some rumor floating about that Frears might have been Guest Director or one of them but that didn't work out either.

Nevertheless, Frears has another project this year that could make appearance and that is his "Untitled Lance Armstrong Biopic" starring Ben Foster as the now disgraced bicyclist.

Frears was the recipient of a TFF tribute in 1987 that included a screening of "Sammy and Rosie Get Laid' and was back in 2010 with "Tamara Drewe".

My feeling is that this is an "iffy" proposition for Telluride.  IMDb lists it as being in post-production as of mid-January but Frears (despite my listing him as an "Usual") has a hit and miss record with T-ride.  It's also difficult to assess what effect the events of last year might have.

Ultimately, I think the chances of us seeing the Frears project this Labor Day is about 30%.

IMDb:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3083008/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_1

Next up is Wim Wenders.  Wenders was an early Telluride participant and then came back strong recently. Wenders, like Baumbach, has a couple of projects that could show at The SHOW.  First, his Cannes documentary "Salt of the Earth" that looks at the life of photographer Sebastiao Salgado.  The film won a couple of awards at Cannes and is in the Sony Pictures Classics stable so you have to think it's a very real T-ride possibility (I've already had it on my "Ten Bets" list this summer).

Wim Wenders

The other Wenders project is the feature film "Every Thing Will Be Fine" which stars James Franco and Rachel McAdams.  It is listed as being in post-production as of last month.  I think that it's much less likely to show up on the program.

"Salt" chances: 60%

IMDb:

 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3674140/?ref_=nv_sr_1

"Every Thing" chances: 20%

IMDb:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1707380/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_1

Lone Scherfig

Then there's Lone Scherfig.  Scherfig played Telluride in 2001 with "Italian for Beginners" in 2001 and was back again in 2009 with "An Education" (in one of those really rare instances where a film played at Sundance and then at Telluride...it happens about once a decade).  Scherfig has a new film in post-production called "Riot Club" starring Natalie Dormer which focuses on Oxford's "Riot Club".  The film is set to premiere in England and Ireland on Sept. 19th so a Telluride play would work nicely for it.  The lack of a U.S. distribution deal may slow its chances, however.

Right now I'd give "Riot Club" only a 25% chance of playing Telluride.

"Riot Club's" IMDb:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2717860/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Finally, today, two guys that used to be "Usuals" that might return to the party.

John Boorman is listed on Telluride's "Esteemed Council of Advisers" and has been for a good long time as has Peter Bogdanovich.

Peter Bogdanovich and John Boorman

Boorman has a sequel in the can of his Oscar nominated "Hope and Glory".  This film is entitled "Queen and Country".  Bogdanovich also has a film entitled "Squirrels to the Nuts" which reportedly hearkens back to the film maker's heyday of comedies like "Paper Moon" and "What's Up Doc?"  It stars Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson as well as past Bogdo stars Cybil Shepherd and Tatum O'Neal.

IMDb for "Queen and Country":

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2392810/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Of these two, I feel "Queen and Country" has a reasonable shot to make the lineup...say 40%.  "Squirrels" seems to be less likely to me.  Out its chances at 25%.

IMDb for "Squirrels":

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1767372/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Tomorrow, a small addendum to this year's "Usual Suspects"...

CRAVE ONLINE TAKES A STAB

Take a look at this CraveOnline video touting the upcoming Telluride Film Festival.  It's kind of entertaining.  "Crave's" film guy William Bibbiani takes a stab at prediciting the Telluride lineup.  He mentions Fincher's "Gone Girl" (see below) , Nolan's "Interstellar", Inarritu's "Birdman" and Scott's "Exodus".

Frankly, I don't know anyone who thinks that "Gone Girl"  or "Exodus" are likely and, though I have seen one mention of "Interstellar's " possibility for Telluride, I'd still be surprised if it is in the lineup.  I'd like that, but I'd be surprised.

"Birdman"...yes.  I think so as well.

I left a comment suggesting that they needed to check this space.

"GONE" TO NYC

"Gone Girl" trailer from YouTube

Variety posted last night that David Fincher's "Gone Girl" will open the New York Film Festival and though I have been consistent in saying it wasn't likely for Telluride, this announcement makes it all but official.  Check the Variety story here:

http://variety.com/2014/film/awards/gone-girl-to-open-new-york-film-festival-exclusive-1201263704/

Incidentally, the announcement stirred up some Twitter traffic about other possible NYFF possible choices for closing night and the mid-fest special screening and as a part of that there was some further mention that there is some buzz about Nolan's "Interstellar" playing Telluride.  Rumors are rumors, but it's still fun to think about,

COMING ATTRACTIONS: MR. HOLMES?

Ian McKellen as Sherlock Holmes in "Mr. Holmes" from Rope of Silicon

Earlier this week, we saw the first image from Bill Condon's "Mr. Holmes" starring Ian McKellen as a 93 year old version of Sherlock Holmes and Laura Linney as well.  The film is currently filming and is expected to be released in 2015.  Production companies on the film include See Saw Films, BBC Films and FilmNation, all of which have had a presence at past Tellurides.  It sounds like the kind of film that could make the TFF #42 lineup.

The Fifth Estate Trailer/Werner and Errol/Mandela Teaser Trailer

Good Wednesday Everyone...

THE FIFTH ESTATE TRAILER

Much as "12 Years a Slave" did the other day, we had a trailer drop late last night for Bill Condon's "The Fifth Estate" starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Bruhl and Laura Linney.

I have thought this had promise and some Telluride possibilities because of Condon's and Linney's presence and I still do.  After seeing the trailer, I'm even more eager.  Here it is via YouTube:

I have also linked to a number of posts from early this morning that included the trailer as well:

"The Fifth Estate" opens Oct. 11th or 18th depending on which website you believe.

WERNER AND ERROL

TFF regulars and board of advisor members Werner Herzog and Errol Morris have been making the rounds to promote the Josh Oppenheimer's documentary "The Act of Killing" which showed prominently at last year's festival.  The two men acted as producers of that film.  Here they are talking about that film with Thompson on Hollywood:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/werner-herzog-errol-morris-act-of-killing-video-interview-vice

I fully expect both men to be a part of Telluride's 40th celebration.  Herzog gets the new Town Park/Hockey Pavilion venue named in his honor (I'm still pushing for the nickname of the new venue to be "The Zog").  I've been thinking that it will be christened with a screening of a restored print of his "Aguirre: The Wrath of God".  Actually, it wouldn't surprise me to see TFF program an entire Herzog retrospective during the course of the five day festival.

Meanwhile, Morris has a new documentary under his belt: "The Unknown Known: The Life and Times of Donald Rumsfeld".  I fully expect that to be a part of this year's lineup.

Morris has a couple of other things on his plate.  He is supposed to have been working on a narrative feature entitled "Freezing People is Easy" but word came this week that he is set to direct "Hollland, Michigan".  This film is described as a "suburban thriller with black humor".  Thompson on Hollywood has that story as well:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/errol-morris-to-direct-narrative-feature-holland-michigan

MANDELA TEASER

I wrote yesterday that The Weinstein Company had a number of prospects going into the awards season.  One of those is "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" featuring Idris Elba in the title role.  This past weekend a teaser trailer was released:

I have also included a couple of stories about the trailer from The Playlist and The Wrap:

"Mandela" was directed by Justin Chadwick whose "The First Grader" appeared at Telluride in 2010.

Best of the Week/Usual Suspects Part Three: The Conclusion

Good Saturday to All...

BEST OF THE WEEK

Here's the flashback best the best material I posted this past week:

TEN BETS #2

Last week's Ten Bets were:

1) Nebraska
2) The Past
3) Daughter of the Dawn
4) Aguirre: The Wrath of God
5) The Immigrant
6) Life Itself
7) The Invisible Woman
8) Labor Day
9) 12 Years a Slave
10) Like Father, Like Son

This week's Ten Bets:

1) Nebraska
2) The Invisible Woman
3) The Past
4) The Unknown Known
5) A Story of Children and Film
6) Daughter of the Dawn
7) The Immigrant
8) Aguirre: The Wrath of God
9) Labor Day
10) The Selfish Giant

Note:  With the removal of "Life Itself" (see Tuesday's blog post) a spot opened up.  It wasn't difficult to fill.  I added "The Unknown Known"  as its replacement on the list. "

"A Story of Children and Film" replaces "12 Years a Slave", though I still am fairly bullish that we'll see the McQueen film.

"The Selfish Giant" replaces "Like Father Like Son " but the two of them are part of four Sundance Selects films any or all of which might be in Telluride.  The other two being "Blue is the Warmest Color" and "Young and Beautiful".  They seem virtually interchangeable in as far as the "Ten Bets" list is concerned and probably will be for the next few weeks unless I garner some compelling evidence that one has a greater chance than the others.

DISTRIBS WITH HISTORY

Today I'm looking at Roadside Attractions and Magnolia.

Roadside Attractions:  This entity has just become a player at Telluride in the last four years.  Prior to 2010 they didn't have a presence in the previous decade.  Even then, they've been limited to one film in each of the past three years but they've been fairly impressive films:

2010: Biutiful
2011: Albert Nobbs
2012: Stories We Tell

Between them, Biutiful and Albert Nobbs were nominated for 5 Oscars.  "Stories We Tell" is almost certainly headed to an Oscar nomination this year for documentary and there is some scuttlebutt that we could see it break into the Best Picture, Director categories as well.

So what does Roadside Attractions have in its quiver.  3 possibilities, it seems:

"All is Lost"
"Blood Ties"
"Gloria"

"All is Lost" is J.C. Chandor's follow up to his well received, Oscar nominated (Original Screenplay) 2011 film "Margin Call".  It stars Robert Redford in a performance with minimal dialogue that played phenomenally well out-of-competition at Cannes.  Actually, there was some commentary that it SHOULD have been in the competition and that Redford might well have been named Best Actor.  Certainly the film is on a lot of radars for potential year end recognition.

I'll be interested to see if it shows at Telluride especially in light of the films Sundance Film Fest connections: Redford, of course, and "Margin Call" got its start there.

Still, if you want to keep attention on Redford's performance, Telluride would be a cool move.

"Gloria"  made a big splash at the Berlin Film Fest in February winning 3 awards including Best Actress for Paulina Garcia.  TFF often includes a title or two from the Berlin fest and this seems like a real possibility.

"Blood Ties"  This film from French actor/director/writer Guillaume Canet was pretty high on my list of Cannes films to consider for Telluride but its cool critical reception at Cannes has made me back off my bullishness about it.  Still, James Gray co-wrote and executive produced and it seems that he will likely have a presence at this year's fest.

This could also be the year that Roadside Attractions has more than one film in the lineup.

Chances:
"Gloria" 50%
"All is Lost" 50%
"Blood Ties" 50%

Today's other exploration of domestic distributors is Magnolia Pictures.  Their Telluride history for the past decade looks like this:

2004: Keane
2005: The Lost City
2006: Severance
2007: Redacted, The Princess of Nebraska, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, Terror's Advocate
2012: The Hunt, A Royal Affair

As you can see, Magnolia had a four year dry spell between 2008-11 but came back last year with two films.  Magnolia's only possible player is Lars Von Trier's "Nymphomaniac".  Von Trier has had some presence at TFF in the past, but it's been a good long time.

My expectation is that Von Trier and Magnolia aren't represented at this year's TFF.

Chances of "Nymphomaniac": 5%

MORE DISTRIBS AND TELLURIDE

Last week I started looking at U.S. film distributing companies and their relationship with the Telluride Film Festival to see what that might tell us about possible TFF #40 fare.  Today I'm looking at Focus Features and Film Movement.

FOCUS FEATURES

Focus used to have  a presence at Telluride. Then last year, after a lengthy absence, they returned. Here's the list:

2003: Lost in Translation
2004: The Motorcycle Diaries
2005: Brokeback Mountain
2006: Catch a Fire
2011: Hyde Park on Hudson

The only real shot I think they have for TFF #40 is "Dallas Buyers Club" directed by Jean-Marc Vallee and starring Matthew McConnaughey.  McConnaughey seems to be continuing his streak of high profile and risky roles and is getting some serious Best Actor vibe.  Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner co-star.  Garner has actually been in Telluride the last two years running with her own "Butter" in 2011 and with husband Ben Affleck for his "Argo" last year.

Although I'd personally love this to be on the TFF list, I'm not that hopeful.  Put its chances at 35%...at least for now.  Say this, though..."Dallas Buyers Club" IS the sort of high profile thing that Telluride and Focus seem to partner on.

FILM MOVEMENT

This little known distribution outfit has been in and out as a presenter at Telluride over the past few years.

2004: Aaltra
2005: Be with Me
2009: Gigante
2010: If I want to Whistle, I Whistle

Film Movement has a couple of Cannes titles that might find their way onto the Telluride playlist:

"Ilo Ilo" from writer/director Anthony Chen and "2 Autumns, 3 Winters" from writer/director Sebastien Betbeder.  I give both films about a 30% chance.

Just yesterday, The Playlist tweeted that Film Movement had acquired rights to "Grigris" directed by Mahamet-Saleh Haroun.  "Grigris" played in competition at Cannes.  This could also mean a spot for the film at Telluide.  Put it at the same 30%.

DOMESTIC DISTRIBUTORS FINALE

After a week and a half of looking at U.S. film distributors, today I'll conclude the series by looking at three small outfits that occasionally have a film in play at the Telluride Film Festival and that might again this year.

STRAND RELEASING

Here's what Strand has had at Telluride in the recent past:

2010: Cameraman: The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff
2011: Bonsai
2012: Paradise: Love

So, Strand has been very consistent recently.  Another common thread is that all three of the above films played in some capacity at Cannes.  So the question becomes, does Strand have a project that fits this profile?  The answer is yes...

"Stranger by the Lake" played in the Un Certain Regard section and was fairly well received.  It also picked up the directing award for the UCR section for director/writer Alain Guiraudie.

All in all, this is strong circumstantial evidence that we'll probably have a chance to see the film at TFF #40.

Chances: 65%

A24

A24 has also been a smallish player at Telluride...and by smallish, I mean, their only past appearance was last year with Sally Potter's "Ginger and Rosa".  That probably had as much to do with it being Potter's film as anything as she has been at Telluride with previous work (Yes-'04).  A24 has also only been around for a couple of years.

However, just this week A@$ announced that they had closed a deal to distribute "The Rover" which makes it something to watch for come Labor Day weekend.  "The Rover" is directed and co-written by David Michod (written with actor Joel Edgerton).

Here's a link from Thompson on Hollywood about the A24 acquisition:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/a24-acquires-the-rover-david-michod-robert-pattinson-guy-pearce

And from Hit Fix: http://www.hitfix.com/news/robert-pattinson-thriller-the-rover-acquire-by-bling-ring-distributor

 Chances for "The Rover" 30%

LD ENTERTAINMENT

LD Entertainment is also a relative newcomer to the distribution game having just started in 2009.  In that short time, however, the company has been represented at Telluride twice.

2010: Biutiful
2011: Albert Nobbs

This year the firm has Charlie Stratton's "Therese" with Elizabeth Olsen, Jessica Lange and not for nothing, Oscar Issac ...who also plays the title role in the Coen Brothers "Inside Llewyn Davis" as a possible feature for Telluride consumption.  "Therese" is based on the novel by Emile Zola and is not to be confused with the Audrey Tautou film of essentially the same name.

"Therese" has a 30% chance to play at Telluride.

FOXCATCHER AT SPC?

Over the weekend Kristopher Tapley at InContention/HitFix posted a story about Bennet Miller's "Foxcatcher" and where it might end up distribution-wise.

The film stars Mark Ruffalo, Steve Carell and Channing Tatum and is based on the true story of John DuPont and  the murder of Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz.

I've had it on the edge of the SHOW's 2013 radar but haven't been particularly bullish on it.  Miller's directing debut "Capote" was a big hit out of TFF in 2005.  It earned Philip Seymour Hoffman the Oscar for Best Actor and 4 other nominations including Picture, Direction and Adapted Screenplay.  Bot Miller's sophomore effort, "Moneyball" didn't play Telluride in 2011 and that has really colored my thinking about "Foxcatcher"

Now comes Tapley's story in which he speculates that the film may be put into the hands of Sony's specialty shop Sony Pictures Classics...which is where "Capote" was distributed in '05.  That makes me re-think the situation.  It certainly increases our chances of seeing it Labor Day weekend.

Tapley writes:

"Multiple sources have told me the film could be distributed through Sony Pictures Classics, no stranger to juggling numerous films during an awards season. However, it's also possible the film, which hasn't been dated yet, doesn't make it out for 2013 at all."

He also adds:

"Sony Classics wouldn't confirm a move and Sony Pictures did not respond to a request for comment, so treat all this as (awful, terrible, rumor-mongering) speculation for now, but it seems to me it would be a good fit. "Foxcatcher" would give SPC a latter year release with real meat on its bones, and Miller is hot, coming off of 2011's "Moneyball," which went out through Sony."

Here's the link to Tapley's complete story:
http://www.hitfix.com/in-contention/where-will-bennett-millers-foxcatcher-end-up

So, "Foxcatcher" may be a possibility after all.

COUNT ON COUSINS

Mark Cousins has become a common presence at the Telluride Film Festival (2009: "The First Movie", 2011; "The Story of Film: An Odyssey", 2012: "What is This Film Called Love?")  and although I didn't have his latest work listed last Friday on the first "Ten Bets" list for TFF #40...he'll almost certainly be on that list this week.  His latest compilation played at Cannes and continues his exploration of film.  It's entitled "A Story of Children and Film".

The Guardian recently profiled Cousins and the film retrospective.  Here that is:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2013/may/20/mark-cousins-children-film-cannes

TCM will be playing Cousins entire 15 part "Odyssey" beginning on Sept. 2...the day this year's festival concludes...Coincidence?  I doubt it.

Thompson on Hollywood had that story:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/story-of-film-mark-cousins-tcm-tv-debut

I'm saying that Cousins will be back and "A Story of Children and Film" will play.

12 YEARS NEW DATE

Last Friday I listed Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave" as #9 on my initial "Ten Bets" list.  It is one of my most anticipated titles of 2013.  News came at the end of the week last week that the films release date has been moved dramatically forward.  It had been scheduled for a December release.  Now it'll be bowing on October 18.

Multiple posts about the move and its implications are listed here:

Thompson on Hollywood: http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/mcqueens-12-years-a-slave-release-date-moved-forward-to-october-18

Movie City News: http://moviecitynews.com/2013/06/12-years-a-slave-moves-to-october-18-2013/

Anne Thompson says in her post that the date change increases the chances that it will play "the early fall festival circuit".  She cites Venice specifically.

Kevin Jagernauth of the Playlist also says that "it's probably safe to say that the studio thinks it can build on a strong showing on the fall festival circuit".  He also cites Venice specifically.

My hope is that "fall film festival circuit" includes Telluride in addition to Venice and Toronto.

PAYNE TALKS

Speaking of Alexander Payne, he recently sat down to an interview at the Il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna, Italy.  Meredith Brody reports for Thompson on Hollywood:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/cinema-ritrovato-alexander-payne-q-a

THE USUAL SUSPECTS PART ONE

Today I begin a three part series about "The Usual Suspects".  Not the film, though it IS fantastic.  No.  What I'm referring to are the company of film makers and film biz pros, actors, directors and others that seem to appear as a part of the Telluride Film Festival with some frequency.  The reason: paying attention to these "usual suspects" can often provide solid clues as to films that may show at The SHOW.

This week I posted the Mark Cousins story that suggests that his most recent work "A Story of Children and Film" is a likely title for TFF #40.  That's largely because Cousins has been on the T-ride slate for 3 of the last 4 years and has this new project ready...and it was also well received at Cannes.  Cousins has made it onto the list of "The Usual Suspects".  It's a surprisingly lengthy list, currently 35 names.

Some people don't stay on the list...in its early days, Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese would have probably been on a "Usual Suspects" list.  They haven't been a part of a Telluride fest in years...so they're no longer on the list.

Some people go on and off...Buck Henry and Peter Bogdanovich are good examples.

Certainly not every one of the 35 currently on my list have projects every year but with that many people, there are usually plenty of "usual suspects" to contemplate.

In addition to Cousins, two of the most "usual" are Werner Herzog and Ken Burns.  They're festival fixtures and almost always have some project that is possible for inclusion.  In addition, Herzog will have the new 650 seat venue in Town Park christened in his honor.  So you have to believe Herzog will be represented by film or films.  My bet is the recently restored "Aguirre: Wrath of God" that is currently being screened in England.

Burns is said to be involved with the restored silent film "Daughter of the Dawn" which I expect to be a part of the TFF #40 lineup.

Another of the most recent "Usuals" is Alexander Payne who has Guest Directed, shown his own work and has scouted and aided in programming.  All this coming in the last few years.  I'm very confident his new film, "Nebraska" will make this year's program.

There are another 8 "usual suspects" that I think have a shot at being involved with a film at this year's SHOW and I'll be looking at them in "The Usual Suspects Parts Two and Three" over the next two days.

THE USUAL SUSPECTS PART TWO

Yesterday I began a three part series focusing on some of the Telluride "Usual Suspects" and what they might have in store for this year's festival.  In Part One I mentioned Mark Cousins, Werner Herzog, Ken Burns and Alexander Payne

I today's Part Two we begin with Steve McQueen.  McQueen certainly has one of the higher profile films of the fall season awaiting.  His "12 Years a Slave" is expected to make a lot of noise.  McQueen's thrid feature follows his "Hunger" and "Shame" which both played at Telluride.  I fully expect, as do many others, that "12 Years" will be a part of the Venice lineup.  The question becomes whether the film follows the path "Shame" did as it also played Venice...Telluride...Toronto and New York.

For awhile, I thought that I was the only one that thought that "12 Years" might follow the "Shame" path...but I have since discovered that there are a number of others who thin it could happen.  Enough so that "12 Years" made it onto my initial "Ten Bets" list last week.

Usual Suspect #6: Roger Michell.  The South African born director appears at T-ride with some frequency.  Last year he had "Hyde Park on Hudson".  In prior years he has been included with "Venus"and "Enduring Love".  Michell's new film "Le weekend" stars Jeff Goldblum (present in Telluride in 2008 for "Adam Resurrected"), Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan.

Frankly, I could see this being on the SHOW list, but for some reason, I'm rather dubious.  The U.S. distributor is Music Box Films... which distributed Herzog's "Happy People: A Year in the Taiga" in 2010" so there is some tenuous history there. Still, I'm doubtful.  Put "Le Weekend's chances at 25%.

Usual Suspect #7 is Errol Morris.  Errol plays in Telluride a good bit too.  Last year as a producer on "The Act of Killig"  In 2010: "Tabloid".  "Fog of War" in 2003.  Morris has a go at his first directing gig of a fictional work with "Freezing People is Easy" starring Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson and Christopher Walken.  But it doesn't seem to be ready.  What does seem to be ready is the Morris directed documentary about Donald Rumsfeld: "The Unknown Known: The Life and Times of Donald Rumsfeld'.  I think you can almost count on it being on the playlist for TFF #40.

And you have to wonder a little...when Morris did "Fog of War" in 2003, his subject, Robert McNamara came along.  Any chance Rumsfeld would?

Usual Suspect #8: Stephen Frears:  The Brit director was last represented in Telluride with "Tamara Drewe".  He was tributed in 1987 along with a screening of "Sammy and Rosie Get Laid".  His latest project has "prestige" smeared all over it.  Perpetual Oscar nominee Judi Dench stars in "Philomena" which also has The Weinstein Company as its distributor.

I think it seems like about a 40% chance of playing this year.

THE USUAL SUSPECTS PART THREE: THE CONCLUSION

And now for the final four "Usual Suspects" that I've been talking about the latter half of this week.  People that are frequent guests, contributors, etc. to the Telluride Film Festival that may have a dog in the hunt this year.

Usual Suspect #9: Laura Linney: She's a past tributee. She's a part time Telluride resident, married to a full time Telluride resident.  She's been in many a Telluride film: "Kinsey", "The Savages", "Hyde Park on Hudson", "P.S."and "Jindabyne".

She's in a hot commodity film that has Telluride potential: Bill Condon's  (Linney's "Kinsey" director) "The Fifth Estate" which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as WikiLeaks guru Julian Assange.

Personally, I'd really love for this to be a part of The SHOW and it ha the above characteristics in its favor...but...Touchstone/Disney has the distribution and there is such a thin, virtually non-existent Telluride relationship from the past as to make it seem less likely.  DreamWorks SKG  and Participant Media are listed by IMDb as the production companies. Participant was a producer for Pablo Larrain's "No" in 2012.  I can't find a DreamWorks SKG produced film in the last decade that has played T-ride.
All in all it seems a wash to me.  Put "The Fifth Estate" at a 40% chance.

Usual Suspect #10 is Sylvain Chomet.  The animation director has been a part of Telluride with both "The Triplets of Belleville" (2003) and "The Illusionist" (2010).  Now, he has his first live action film as a Telluride possibility.  "Attila Marcel" may not be ready in time, however. Its IMDb page is here:

Chances 20%

Usual Suspect #11 is Kevin Macdonald.  Macdonald's Telluride start has come and gone but could be coming back again.  His films at Telluride include: "The Last King of Scotland" (2006), "My Enemy's Enemy" (2007) and "Touching the Void" (2003).  He currently has the documentary "Christmas in a Day" and the feature "How I Live Now" starring Saoirse Ronan in the hopper.  Of the two, I think "How I Live..." might have the better shot.  Film4 and the UK Film Council both have had a hand in the production and are often represented with films at Telluride.

Chances: "How I Live Now" 30%
"Christmas in a Day" 15%

"Usual Suspects" #12: Bertrand Tavernier: He's a member of TFF's "Esteemed Council of Advisers" (along with Herzog and Morris among others).  Tavernier's last Telluride presentation of a film came in 2010 with "The Princess of Montpensier". Other Tavernier films that have played T-ride: "A Sunday in the Country"('84), "L.267" ('93), "Fresh Bait" ('95), "Captain Conan" ('97), "Safe Passage" ('02).

There's a lot of Tavernier history at Telluride.

His latest film is "Quai d'Qrsay".  I really don't have much more info on the film, but because its Tavernier, my guess is that there's an excellent chance that it makes the TFF #40 program.

"Quai d'Orsay" chances: 55%

So, those are this year's "Usual Suspects."  We'll almost certainly see work from Herzog, Morris, Cousins, Burns and Payne.

We may see work from Linney, McQueen and Frears.

Outside possibilities include work from: Chomet, Macdonald and Michell.

Have a great weekend...More on Monday.
